David Zaslav Is the Good Guy? Why He Might Have Saved Turner Classic Movies
Image
We’ve made no secret of our quibbles with David Zaslav’s oversight of Turner Classic Movies. In June 2023, I wrote a critical op-ed (“Dear David Zaslav: Gutting TCM Will Not Help You Win Filmmakers Back to Warner Bros.”) right after the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO presided over layoffs amounting to 80 percent of the staff.

So it might come as some surprise that I’m now feeling bullish about the news that Zaslav and Warner Bros. co-heads Mike DeLuca and Pam Abdy will retain creative control over TCM as Warner Bros. Discovery prepares to split into two companies. (This arrangement was first reported by Variety and confirmed by IndieWire.) One will be the Studios and Streaming group, a business that oversees film and TV production, with Zaslav retained as CEO. The other is the Global Networks group, home to the present company’s entire suite of linear TV channels, with new CEO Gunnar Wiedenfels,...

When Hollywood ‘Went Gay All of a Sudden’: TCM Highlights Films That Track Queer Evolution
Image
In classic film circles, “Bringing Up Baby” is just one of those movies that everybody knows about. It’s Cary Grant. It’s Katharine Hepburn. It’s Howard Hawks. All “Old Hollywood For Dummies” buzz words. But the movie — a notorious flop upon release — is a historical curiosity not because it is a cute, zany screwball comedy of a bygone era — though it is. “Bringing Up Baby” just happens to have what is likely first usage in film of the word “gay” to mean something other than happy. At least we think it does.

“My understanding is that by the time ‘Bringing Up Baby’ came out, the word ‘gay’ was known in some circles to mean homosexual,” TCM host Dave Karger said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “And the story goes that Cary Grant ad libbed that line. So, I would like to think that he that Cary Grant...

Martha Stewart on Why She Chose to Work With ‘Martha’ Filmmaker R.J. Cutler: ‘I Didn’t Want Some Namby-Pamby, Ralph Lauren Documentary’
Image
“I didn’t want some namby-pamby, Ralph Lauren documentary,” Martha Stewart declared Monday night in Beverly Hills as she and filmmaker R.J. Cutler sat for an FYC event on the outdoor deck of the Maybourne Hotel to tout the Netflix docu “Martha.”

Stewart was responding to a question from moderator Dave Karger, a host of TCM, as to why she chose Cutler as the person to tell her life story in a feature documentary. Stewart added quickly that fashion mogul Lauren is a friend who lives “next door to me” in Connecticut. But she referred to the 2019 docu “Very Ralph” as something that Lauren “masterminded.” Cutler, on the other hand, had final cut on “Martha,” which premiered Oct. 30 on the streamer.

Stewart’s initial reaction to the film included some sharp criticisms of Cutler and the final product. That tension seems to have largely melted away as the two sat collegially together for a half-hour,...

How Did Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman Meet: A Closer Look at Their Relationship History
Image
There’s something oddly satisfying about watching a Hollywood love story that doesn’t crash and burn like a B-list action movie. If we are being honest, most celebrity marriages have the shelf life of a banana in July. So when Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban not only survived the media meat grinder but managed to build a marriage that’s still intact after over 15 years, we had to stop and ask: what sorcery is this?

Their story? It’s not some sappy fairytale that floated out of a Nicholas Sparks novel. No, this one has got rehab, rebounds, and red carpets. They met in 2005, both emotionally half-melted candles from past flames, yet somehow they sparked. “We were a mixture of frightened and brave,” Kidman, who faced Hollywood’s cold shoulder after her divorce from Tom Cruise, once told Vanity Fair.

And boy, she wasn’t just playing with poetic license.

2025 TCM Classic Film Festival Had Something For Everyone!
Image
WeAreMovieGeeks.com attended the TCM Film Festival in Hollywood over the weekend and as usual, it did not disappoint! The theme of this year’s festival was Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds On Film and it was chock full of all the sci-fi, fantasy, and film-noir selections anyone could ask for!

The TCM Classic Film Festival opened April 24th with a 45th Anniversary screening of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back at the Tcl Chinese Theater followed by a conversation with filmmaker George Lucas.

Here’s a wrap-up of what we saw over the weekend.

Superman The Movie (1978)

Guest: Michael DeLuca (WB)

First up was Superman the Movie, from 1978. Starring Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman and Margot Kidder, this is long considered the penultimate Superman movie. And there have been a few since, but none compare with this masterpiece. In attendance to present the film was Michael DeLuca, Co-Chair and CEO of Warner Bros.

Kathy Bates Tells Rob Reiner to His Face She Regrets Him Toning Down the Violence in ‘Misery’
Image
Last weekend thousands of the world’s most passionate and obsessive movie fans descended upon Hollywood for the 16th annual TCM Classic Film Festival, which provided opportunities to see everything from “Gunfight at the Ok Corral” and “We’re No Angels” projected in true VistaVision to nitrate prints of “Daisy Kenyon” and “Mildred Pierce” at The Egyptian Theatre, one of only five venues in the country capable of screening that format. There was also a restoration of a silent classic with live accompaniment (“Beau Geste“), a BFI restoration of Ernst Lubitsch’s timeless — and timely — comedy “To Be or Not to Be,” and a a tribute to groundbreaking director Michael Schultz, among many other delightful programs.

It’s hard to pick a favorite event from such a stacked weekend, but for sheer moviegoing pleasure it was tough to beat the 35th anniversary screening of “Misery,” which screened in the legendary Tcl...

Martin Scorsese Praises Robert Eggers' 'Nosferatu' Remake: "Amazing"
Image
Martin Scorsese is quite literally a living legend. The director has created some of the most iconic and influential films of his time. From his first films in the late 1960s to as recently as two years ago, Scorsese has kept busy making all sorts of movies, most recently releasing The Irishman in 2019 and Killers of the Flower Moon in 2023. The acclaimed filmmaker has also executive-produced plenty of other filmmakers' projects and advocated for preserving the movie-going experience. In doing so, Scorsese will make his opinion known on all the latest movies by up-and-coming filmmakers.

Just recently, Scorsese made it a point to sing his praises of Robert Eggers' latest Gothic Horror film, Nosferatu. In a conversation with TCM host Dave Karger at the 92nd St Y, the Taxi Driver director talked about a myriad of topics. Among the talking points during the panel was his recent collaboration with Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson.

Selena Gomez Hints at Music Hiatus Following Oscar-Nominated Film’s Controversy
Selena Gomez
Actress Selena Gomez is making waves in Hollywood with her Spanish-language film “Emilia Pérez,” which has received 13 Oscar nominations. At the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Gomez sparked conversation about potentially leaving her music career to focus on acting.

During an interview with moderator Dave Karger, the 32-year-old artist suggested she might step away from music. “It’s going to be very hard for me to ever go back to music after this,” Gomez said, though she softened her statement with a contemplative “Maybe” when pressed about the finality of her decision.

The film’s success comes with significant challenges. “Emilia Pérez” has drawn criticism for its portrayal of Mexico and transgender identity. Additional controversy surrounds co-star Karla Sofía Gascón, whose past social media posts contained problematic language.

Despite the challenges, Gomez remains positive. “Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done,...

Martin Scorsese Gushes About Robert Eggers & ‘Nosferatu’: “Amazing, Anything This Guy Does, Amazing”
Image
It’s quite the task to impress a filmmaker and cinema historian like Martin Scorcese (“Killers of The Flower Moon”). Still, writer/director Robert Eggers is the type to exceed expectations, and his fandom grows with each release. Scorcese recently chatted with Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, and the subject moved to “Nosferatu,” where the director gushed about Eggers’ work on the well-crafted period horror remake of the classic silent 1920s film.

Selena Gomez says ‘some of the magic has disappeared’ after ‘Emilia Pérez’ controversy
Image
In her first public comments since bigoted social media posts from Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón resurfaced online, Selena Gomez acknowledged “some of the magic has disappeared” from the Oscar-nominated film.

Speaking at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday night where she received the event’s Virtuoso Award, Gomez was asked by moderator Dave Karger how she was doing amid so much turmoil around Emilia Pérez.

“It has been a time. You have been through it. I just feel like you and this movie have been under this microscope for good, for not-so-good, for all of these reasons. I just want to know, how are you? How are you doing right now?” Karger asked.

After taking a beat, Gomez responded. “I’m good. I’m really good,” she said with some obvious emotion in her voice. “Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue...

Selena Gomez Responds to ‘Emilia Pérez’ Controversy: ‘I Live with No Regrets’
Image
Though she did not get into specifics, “Emilia Pérez” star Selena Gomez made her first public statement about recent controversies, including Karla Sofía Gascón‘s offensive past social media remarks, while at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

Asked by moderator and Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger during the Virtuosos panel how she was doing right now with the film under such public scrutiny, the BAFTA Award-nominated actress said, “I’m really good. Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”

Gascón was meant to be feted alongside her at the event honoring the biggest breakout performances of the year, but dropped out after her tweets scandal. With previously announced honorees “Babygirl” star Harris Dickinson...

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu Gets Glowing Review From 1 of Hollywood's Most Iconic Directors
Image
Robert Eggers' latest horror film, Nosferatu, has received tons of praise from critics and audiences, but it just received a major stamp of approval from legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who revealed he's a massive fan of the film and the man behind the vampire flick.

Per GamesRadar+, Scorsese sat down with TCM host Dave Karger to discuss his legendary career in cinema, when the topic of Nosferatu was brought up. When asked whether he had seen the film, Scorsese confirmed that he had and offered tons of praise for the film and Eggers himself. "It’s amazing," Scorsese said. "Anything this guy does, amazing. And that's one [film] you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in Transylvania, and it’s really, [laughs] whoa. Man, he’s something."

Martin Scorsese Loves Robert Eggers: ‘Anything This Guy Does Is Amazing’
Image
Martin Scorsese is in awe of Robert Eggers.

During a recent Q&a with TCM’s Dave Karger (via World of Reel), Scorsese praised Eggers’ auteurism on his recent film “Nosferatu.”

“It’s amazing,” Scorsese said of the film. “Anything this guy does is amazing. That’s one film you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in Transylvania and it’s really … Man, he’s something.”

While Scorsese isn’t quite known for horror, Eggers has become a modern master of the genre. Eggers, who previously helmed “The Witch,” “The Northman,” and “The Lighthouse,” announced his fifth film “Werwulf” in January 2025.

“Werwulf” will be a werewolf horror movie set in 13th century England, and will see Eggers re-team with Focus Features. Eggers cowrote the script with his “The Northman” scribe Sjón. Like “Nosferatu,” “Werwulf” will be getting a holiday release; the film...

Santa Barbara Film Fest: Oprah to Present Honor to Colman Domingo (Exclusive)
Image
Oprah Winfrey, the legendary entertainer and a longtime Montecito resident, will, fittingly enough, present the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Montecito Award to Colman Domingo — her friend and four-time collaborator, and a best actor Oscar nominee this season for Sing Sing — on Friday, Feb. 14, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Domingo, who will be feted at Santa Barbara’s historic Arlington Theatre at a ceremony beginning at 8 p.m., is the first person since Denzel Washington did so in 2017 and 2018 to garner best actor Oscar nominations in back-to-back years; last year, he was nominated for Rustin.

Winfrey and Domingo have co-starred in two films, 2013’s The Butler and 2014’s Selma, as well as the Audible adaptation of Domingo’s play Wild with Happy; and he starred in and she produced 2023’s The Color Purple.

Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter can report, the fest is also adding two other Oscar nominees to its lineup.

Image
Here’s How Nicole Kidman Started Her Quest For Love After 2003 Oscar Win ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Earning an Oscar is deemed an aspiration come true, but Nicole Kidman saw it as a wake-up call. In 2003, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for The Hours, a watershed moment in her career.

However, rather than feeling on top of the world, she experienced a peculiar absenteeism. At the time, the actress was still getting used to life after her divorce from Tom Cruise. But by the time she won that Oscar, her personal life was in an entirely distinct place—one she hadn’t quite figured out yet.

Nicole Kidman discovered something noteworthy that night, surrounded by Hollywood’s most prominent stars. Success in her career wasn’t sufficient. The Hollywood beauty wanted genuine love, which meant it was time to start looking.

Steven Spielberg Recalls “Hard-Fought Victory” to Stop ‘E.T.’ Sequel: “I Didn’t Have Any Rights”
Image
Steven Spielberg says that his efforts to prevent a sequel to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial influenced his decision to secure “freeze” rights on his future projects.

The Oscar-winning director recalled stopping a follow-up to his beloved 1982 film, saying he has “no intention” of ever making a sequel, while discussing the movie with star Drew Barrymore on Saturday night as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival: New York Pop-Up x 92Ny event.

“That was a real hard-fought victory because I didn’t have any rights. Before E.T., I had some rights, but I didn’t have a lot of rights,” he told the crowd. “I kind of didn’t have what we call ‘the freeze,’ where you can stop the studio from making a sequel because you control the freeze on sequels, remakes and other ancillary uses of the IP. I didn’t have that. I got it after E.

Did Nicole Kidman’s Knee Injury Cost Her The Lead Role In Panic Room?
Image
Nicole Kidman lost the lead role in Panic Room? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Yes. Jodie Foster ended up replacing her—and Nicole Kidman, surprisingly, was thankful. “I was in a really bad way. I was like, ‘I’m having a breakdown.’ And Jodie took over, thank the Lord,” Kidman admitted.

The Panic Room storyline saw Foster and a young Kristen Stewart trapped in their New York apartment’s panic room, hiding from intruders. But for Kidman, her departure from the project stemmed from a serious knee injury sustained during Moulin Rouge in 2001. On top of that, she was navigating a rocky personal life. Her 11-year marriage to Tom Cruise had just ended, adding emotional turbulence to an already demanding career.

Despite her personal challenges, Kidman’s professional trajectory was soaring. But success didn’t mean everything was smooth sailing. She later opened up about not fully enjoying her 2003 Oscar win for The Hours.

Why Does The Academy Seem to Have It In For ‘SNL’ Stars?
Image
With its ’70s-era production details and sprawling age-spanning ensemble, Saturday Night has high hopes for the Oscars this year. But if the Jason Reitman period piece manages to win one, it will achieve something that the cast it depicts never could.

Though Saturday Night Live has racked up a record-breaking 103 Emmys and churned out generational talent with regularity over its 50 seasons, only six among its more than 150 castmembers have ever been nominated for an Oscar (five if you don’t include one-episode-and-done player Laurie Metcalf).

Its only winner? Robert Downey Jr., just this past March for Oppenheimer. And his 1985-86 SNL stint is a career footnote.

“I don’t think it’s conscious,” says Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger, an Oscar prognosticator and author of 50 Oscar Nights, “but there might be something going on. There’s obviously a disconnect between SNL and [film] awards.”

Comedy stars can struggle with the Academy,...

TCM Warns Viewers of Potential Disruptions as Classic Movie Channel Upgrades its Broadcasting Technology
Image
If you’re a fan of Turner Classic Movies, you may experience some interruptions in the coming weeks.

TCM, the Warner Bros. Discovery owned cabler that specializes in vintage films, released a video statement Friday delivered by host Ben Mankiewicz asking viewers to “pardon our digital dust” as TCM prepares to upgrade and expand its broadcasting operations. That may mean interruptions for fans trying to get their fill of golden age cinema, he warned.

“The best fans and the best movies deserve the best service. So to ensure TCM’s on-air experience is reliable and smooth for the foreseeable future, we are upgrading our broadcasting operations,” Mankiewicz said. “You might notice some interruptions while we go through this process, so please, bear with us.”

Mankiewicz, who initially worked as an on-camera reporter and news anchor, joined the network in 2003. He first shared his hosting duties with famed TCM host Robert Osborne...

Telluride: ‘The Piano Lesson’ wins raves for Danielle Deadwyler
Image
The buzz heading into the world premiere of “The Piano Lesson” at the Telluride Film Festival suggested that star Danielle Deadwyler will be a serious Oscar threat at next year’s ceremony, with the actress leading in the supporting category in the Gold Derby odds at this early stage of the season. Now that the Malcolm Washington film has screened, expect her front-runner speculation to continue for Deadwyler, who is given several standout moments in the Netflix drama.

Based on the August Wilson play of the same name and co-written by Washington and Virgil Williams, “The Piano Lesson” is largely set in 1936 – although the drama’s inciting incident occurred in 1911. The film focuses on “the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles (Jackson) household and an heirloom, the family piano, which documents the family history through carvings made by their enslaved ancestor.” Washington’s brother, John David Washington,...

TCM’s ‘Great Composers’ Series Turns a Spotlight on the Movies’ Maestros
Image
When TCM channel host Dave Karger used to be a writer for Entertainment Weekly in his early days as a print journalist, he would focus a great deal on interviewing the big pop stars of the day, along with his duties on the film beat. But little did very many people suspect then that what he really wanted to be writing about was “Laura”… not Branigan, but David Raksin’s music for the classic 1945 noir. That was the film that really prompted Karger’s lifelong love of movie scoring.

“His score for ‘Laura’ really turned me on to classic film music, and film scores in general,” says Karger. “And then you go back and you learn that in 1945, there were 20 Oscar nominees that year in the category of best score for a non-musical film — and David Raksin wasn’t even one of the 20 nominees. That’s a score that has...

Horizon is a grand, sprawling epic or the birth of America, told with elegance and spectacle of yesteryear Hollywood. It proves once again that Kevin Costner is a master of the genre. I would have watched Chapter 2 immediately afterwards. #Cannes2024 pic.twitter.com/5ki7gxYqM3

TCM Classic Film Festival’s Hosts and Producers Offer Their Personal Picks for 2024 Fest, From ‘Pulp Fiction’ to 100-Year-Old ‘Sherlock Jr.’
Image
Returning for its 15th annual edition this weekend, the TCM Classic Film Festival will turn Hollywood Blvd. into the center of the movie universe again for four days, for that very obsessive and loving subset of film fans that has the network’s vintage fare as part of their weekly and daily lives. And just what time span “classics” falls into is exemplified by the big opening and closing night films.

The gala opening night picture is 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” which festival director Genevieve McGillicuddy says “is one of the most contemporary films that we are showing this year, along with ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Little Women,’ the 1994 version. ‘Seven,’ I think, is the most recent film we’re screening; that’s 1995. Just like with the network, we don’t have any official cutoff in terms of the years of films that we’re showing. But, interestingly — it’s the opposite of a cutoff,...

Per the Associated Press, Louis Gossett Jr. died on Friday morning in Santa Monica, California. No details were shared about a cause of death, though his passing was confirmed by the actor's cousin, Neal L. Gossett. He was 87 years old.

After beginning his career as an actor with stage work, Gossett rose to great fame with his role as Fiddler in the hit television miniseries Roots, which aired in 1977. “That feels really inappropriate”: How Nicole Kidman’s Oscar Win Helped Her Finally Move On from Tom Cruise to Find Love Once Again
Image
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise’s relationship was one full of ups and downs. Their romance lasted eleven years and ended in a cloud of smoke that left both of them gasping for air. It is safe to say that being together for so long and walking away was difficult for both of them. Cruise managed to find love in Katie Holmes, with the two having an even more complex relationship. However, Kidman’s story was a lot more different.

Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise

The actress once revealed that the moment that she decided to move on from the actor and find her true love was interconnected with the night she had one of the biggest achievements of her career. In 2003, Kidman won the Academy Award for Best Actress. This accolade was followed up by a depressing night and an insightful epiphany.

Recommended New Books on Filmmaking: Diving into Dune, Oscar Nights, Kubrick, Blaxploitation, Akerman & More
Image
We are somehow now into the spring season, and while cinemas have been a tad dull, noteworthy new books have arrived at a frantic pace. Here are some that should be on your radar, and please note that our next column will include, among other treats, a lengthy rundown of recent noteworthy novels.

The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two by Tanya Lapointe with Stefanie Broos (Insight Editions)

Dune: Part One, the first of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptations of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, spawned a handful of painstakingly crafted, info-packed hardcover books. The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two takes the same approach that made these earlier texts so satisfying. Tanya Lapointe was on set every day, and her accounts of the pre-production, production, and post-production processes are captivating. The designs of Geidi Prime are standouts and supplemented with quotes like the following, from production designer Patrice Vermette...

Olivia Colman confesses she 'took beta blocker to calm down' before 2019 Oscars win
Image
Actress Olivia Colman has revealed that she was very nervous the night she won her Oscar.

Colman has shared that she had to take a beta blocker to calm down.

The actress, 50, also revealed that she ordered a high neck dress to hide a huge rash.

The actress states that the rash appears when she is stressed, reports ‘Mirror.co.uk’.

Colman won the award in 2019 for ‘The Favourite’, the movie in which she played Queen Anne.

The actress said in a new book: “I had been really against anyone talking about it as I didn’t like the pressure. I had half a beta blocker because I was so nervous. It took away all my fear. I shouldn’t recommend that, but it was great.”

As per ‘Mirror.co.uk’, the pills slow down the heart.

Speaking of ordering her dress for the occasion, Colman added: “When I get nervous,...

Turner Classic Movies Celebrates 30th Anniversary And Honors Former Host Robert Osborne
Image
Turner Classic Movies, the leading authority and definitive home of classic film, will celebrate its 30th anniversary on April 14, 2024. To honor the milestone, TCM will present on-air programming salutes featuring TCM staff who were there from the very beginning, as well as a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from TCM’s first host and champion, Robert Osborne.

“How many other channels on television celebrate their anniversary? How many other channels’ fans know where they were the day a network launched?” says TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz. “I’m not sure either of those things are true without Robert Osborne. He’s the Walter Cronkite of TCM. The Johnny Carson. The Alex Trebek. With these intros of Robert’s, we’re celebrating his impact and his continued influence. Plus, as we do with the movies we show, we’ll put Robert into context. Additionally, we’ll also look back...

TCM Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary by Airing a Full Day of Robert Osborne Intros Alongside the Late Host’s Favorite Films
Image
Turner Classic Movies will turn 30 on April 14, 2024. That’s right: It’ll be 30 years since Ted Turner flipped the switch — flanked by Old Hollywood legends Arthur Hiller, Arlene Dahl, Jane Powell, Celeste Holm, and Van Johnson — right in the middle of Times Square to turn the network “on.”

Also with Turner that day was the man who’d become TCM’s longtime host, Robert Osborne, then just 61. A veteran columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, Osborne had become known as a close friend to many of the surviving stars of yesteryear ever since he was photographed kissing Bette Davis’s hand during a Golden Globes broadcast in the late ’70s. He’d go on to host the intros and outros for most of TCM’s primetime lineup for close to 23 years after that launch date, until he died in March 2017 at 84.

For so many TCM fans, Robert Osborne was the network.

Image
To celebrate its 30th anniversary, TCM on April 14 will present a 24-hour marathon of films with historical introductions from Robert Osborne and throughout the month feature programming with other staffers who started with the channel, it was announced Thursday.

For more than 22 years until his death in March 2017, the revered Osborne served as TCM’s primetime host, bringing millions of viewers into the world of classic cinema he knew as an actor mentored by Lucille Ball, as an Oscar historian and as a longtime The Hollywood Reporter reviewer and columnist.

“How many other channels on television celebrate their anniversary? How many other channels’ fans know where they were the day a network launched?” Ben Mankiewicz, who took over for Osborne, said in a statement. “I’m not sure either of those things are true without Robert Osborne.

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival Remains a Key Stop on the Oscar Circuit
Image
It’s not news that the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is a key stop on the awards trail. Every year, Executive Director Roger Durling pulls a starry lineup and Oscar wranglers make sure their clients make the most of the 2,000-seat Arlington Theatre red carpet tributes and panels.

The new trend? Multiple presenters, and thus even bigger star power. Bradley Cooper had both costar Carey Mulligan and friend Brad Pitt pay him tribute last Thursday, while on Friday Robert Downey Jr. drew both his old school chum Rob Lowe and “Oppenheimer” costar Cillian Murphy.

Saturday brought the producer and International panels along with the annual Virtuosos show hosted by TCM’s Dave Karger, who hawked his glossy new Oscar book published by TCM, “50 Oscar Nights: Iconic Stars & Filmmakers on Their Career-Defining Wins,” including Steven Spielberg, Jennifer Hudson, Emma Thompson, Meryl Streep, and more. And Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”) flirted charmingly with both Karger,...

Santa Barbara Film Fest: Robert Downey Jr., Lily Gladstone and Billie Eilish Among Those Feted During Busy Weekend
Image
It’s been a star-filled weekend in Santa Barbara, with a dozen of A-listers — including numerous Oscar nominees — making their way to the American Riviera for events at the 39th Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

On Friday night, inside the 2,000-seat Arlington Theater, which was sold out, the fest celebrated Robert Downey Jr. with its Maltin Modern Master Award, which is named after the film critic/historian Leonard Maltin. Maltin moderated a brisk career retrospective conversation with the Oppenheimer best supporting actor Oscar nominee, who charmed the audience with his self-deprecating humor and imitations of everyone from Richard Attenborough to his late father Robert Downey Sr., prior to Downey’s costar Cillian Murphy presenting him with the award itself.

During the interview, the honoree, 58, reflected on growing up as the son of an independent filmmaker who cast him in a movie, 1970’s Pound, when he was just five. “I think...

Whoopi Goldberg Recalls How Patrick Swayze Convinced Her to Make ‘Ghost’
Image
Whoopi Goldberg is looking back at how Patrick Swayze convinced her to take on her Oscar-winning role in 1990’s Ghost.

The actress told author Dave Karger in his new book 50 Oscar Nights, via People magazine, that she needed a bit of persuading before she decided to play psychic Oda Mae Brown in the Jerry Zucker-directed film.

“I get a phone call from my agent, Ron Meyer, who says, ‘Patrick Swayze has been hired for this movie. Patrick is not going to do this if you don’t do it. Can you make some time for him and the director to come up?’” Goldberg recalled.

The Egot winner added, “So they [Zucker and Swayze] flew in, I meet Patrick, and out of the blue, we’re old friends. … About 40 minutes go by and Patrick says, ‘Please do this [movie] with me.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, okay.’ And that’s how it happened.”
