Amazon Studios acquires 'Sound Of Metal', 'The Vast Of Night' in Tiff
Streamer enters fray after quiet start at festival.

Amazon Studios has swooped on Us rights to Tiff Platform selection Sound Of Metal starring Riz Ahmed and also picked up Midnight Madness entryThe Vast Of Night.

Amazon Studios is looking at a 2020 theatrical release on both titles. At time of writing it had not confirmed what type of theatrical release the films will get in the Us – whether they be the two-week run before a launch on Prime Video in the vein of The Report and The Aeronauts, or a longer run.

The streamer did the deal on Sound Of Metal with CAA Media Finance.

Amazon Acquires First-Time Director Andrew Patterson’s Toronto Film ‘The Vast of Night’
Amazon Studios announced on Thursday that it has picked up distribution rights to first-time filmmaker Andrew Patterson’s “The Vast of Night.”

The science-fiction thriller premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness category Thursday night.

The film, set at the dawn of the space-race, takes place over the course of one night in 1950’s New Mexico, it follows a young switchboard operator and a radio DJ as they uncover a strange frequency that could change their lives, their small town, and all of Earth – forever.

Toronto: Amazon Buys ‘The Vast of Night’ (Exclusive)
Amazon Studios has acquired worldwide rights to “The Vast of Night,” an alien contact tale, Variety has learned. The pact comes ahead of the film’s Thursday premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it is featured in the Midnight Madness section.

The film is said to have a distinct “Twilight Zone” vibe. It is set at the dawn of the space race and takes place over the course of one night in 1950s New Mexico. It follows a young switchboard operator (Sierra McCormick) and a radio DJ (Jake Horowitz) as they uncover a strange frequency, which they investigate to uncover its origin.
