2025 has been one of the weaker years for the film industry as high-budget films like Captain America: Brave New World and Snow White have failed at both impressing the audience and at the box office. While there have been many disappointments this year, it does not mean that there have been no good movies released this year, and to prove that, we have compiled a list of the best movies that have come out in 2025 so far.

The Penguin waddled to the front of the pack at the 5th Critics Choice Super Awards.

On Thursday, the Critics Choice Association (Cca) revealed the winners of the awards show that celebrates fan-favorite movies and TV shows in superhero, sci-fi/fantasy, horror, and action genres.

HBO's The Penguin was the biggest winner, dominating all four categories for which it was nominated: Best Superhero Program, Colin Farrell for both Best Actor and Best Villain, and Cristin Milioti for Best Actress. This news comes about a month before the 2025 Emmys, where The Penguin is nominated for a whopping 24 awards.

Four movies tied for the most wins at two apiece: Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, and Sinners. Additional movie stars that eked out victories include June Squibb (Thelma), Florence Pugh (Thunderbolts), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Hugh Grant (Heretic).

The Penguin topped the list of the 2025 Critics Choice Super Awards winners, earning four wins including Best Superhero Series, Best Actor in a Superhero Series (Colin Farrell), Best Villain in a Series (Farrell again), and Best Actress in a Superhero Series (Cristin Milioti). On the film side, four movies – Dune: Part Two, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Sinners, and Deadpool & Wolverine – tied with two wins each.

Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actor Matthew Modine is known for starring in movies like Full Metal Jacket (1987), Memphis Belle (1990), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and for his role as Dr. Martin Brenner in Stranger Things. A Band of Brothers replacement show, Sas: Rogue Heroes, is experiencing a resurgence on global streaming charts. Created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, Band of Brothers is widely regarded as one of HBO's greatest miniseries of all time through its accurate and visceral portrayal of D-Day and other pivotal moments during World War II.

While no show can truly replace Band of Brothers, Sas: Rogue Heroes is an arguably worthy successor. Helmed by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, it follows the British Army Special Air Services (Sas) throughout World War II's Western Desert Campaign in Egypt and Libya.

As per FlixPatrol as of August 5, Sas: Rogue Heroes is at the number eight spot on HBO Max's global streaming charts. It is in HBO Max's top 10 for 28 countries, including Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Sweden.

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, the Bird Box and King of Staten Island actor revealed that he was "supposed to" audition for a pivotal vampire role in Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s supernatural Southern Gothic horror epic. But according to Kelly, there was one line in the audition script he simply couldn’t say.

Exclusive: UK producer Ian Davies has left documentary specialist Noah Media Group to reboot Initialize Films, the production and finance company he originally founded in 2005.

Initialize has a background of producing, financing and packaging documentary and fiction feature films. Previous titles include Carol Morley’s The Falling, starring Florence Pugh and Maisie Williams, and Yann Demange’s thriller ’71 starring Jack O’Connell.

Starring the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell, and more, the movie has also earned itself fair financial success to date, across four weekends at the box office thus far.

In total, 28 Years Later has accumulated $139.2 million in global revenue as of the time of writing, 2.3 times its reported budget. A new Clayface movie is officially on the way, and fresh reports are giving fans a clearer picture of what to expect. According to Nexus Point News, the film will tell a dark and disturbing story about a struggling Hollywood actor who ends up turning into a monster made of clay.

DC Studios has described the film as an R-rated body horror that will show the tragic origins of one of Batman’s classic villains.

The movie was originally thought up by horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House. Flanagan first became interested in Clayface back in 2021 and kept pitching his idea to DC. In March 2023, Flanagan and his producing partner Trevor Macy met with DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran to talk about the project.

Reports say that from the start, the idea was for Clayface to be more than just a typical villain.

A new Clayface movie is officially happening, and now fresh details are coming out about what fans can expect from the film. New report from Nexus Point News claims Clayface will be a dark, body horror story about a struggling actor who ends up becoming a monster made entirely of clay.

The movie was first imagined by filmmaker Mike Flanagan, known for The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep. Flanagan had been interested in Clayface since 2021 and pitched the idea to DC several times.

In 2023, he met with DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran to discuss the project. Interestingly, Clayface won’t be a typical villain in this film, which is different from how he’s usually shown in the comics. Safran has compared the tone of the movie to the classic horror film The Fly from 1986.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has went through multiple directors, as well as some reported rewrites, but it hasn't come to fruition yet - in spite of having a 2025 release date once upon a time. However, it has now been revealed that costumes which were created for the as-of-yet unmade MCU film were used in Sinners, which was released earlier this year, and is also about vampires.

The horror magazine has unveiled the nominees for its signature awards, which includes the big categories you'd expect — like Best Wide Release and Best Lead Performance — and some you mind not—like Best Video Game and Best Public Domain Resurrection.

Sinners Dominate International Markets On Day One

However, the numbers hint at a shift. On its first day alone, Sinners climbed to No. 1 in 28 countries across Europe, Asia, and Australia.

After its theatrical success, Ryan Coogler's hit film Sinners is now streaming on Max. This also makes history by offering a new viewing option that's never been done for a streaming release.

Per Warner Bros. Discovery, Sinners has two viewing options available on Max: the theatrical cut and the Black American Sign Language (Basl) version. It's the first time that a streaming service has exclusively debuted a film interpreted in Basl. Wbd has described Basl as a "distinct dialect of American Sign Language (Asl) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions, and cultural nuances."

When the first trailer for Black Panther director Ryan Coogler's Sinners was released, many people pointed out that it had, in some ways, left Marvel Studios' long-delayed Blade movie surplus to requirement.

Coogler's horror epic was a surprise hit, grossing $364 million worldwide and receiving widespread critical acclaim. However, it being a vampire movie led by a Black actor (with a 1920s setting) wasn't the only thing it had in common with Blade.

During an interview with ScreenCrush, Sinners producer Sev Ohanian shared a "fun Marvel easter egg" when he revealed that many of the costumes used by background actors in the movie were originally planned for Blade when it was being developed as a period piece.
