The ‘Maude’ Abortion Episode Wouldn’t Air Today — Norman Lear Tried, and ‘It Wasn’t Green Lit’
Image
Norman Lear was not a man to shy away from controversy. If anything, he sprinted toward it, knowing that doing so would help open people’s minds to pervasive American issues related to discrimination, human rights, and more. Through his landmark sitcoms like “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “Sanford and Son,” “One Day at a Time” (twice!), and “Good Times” (also twice!), Lear helped American families address thorny political and social topics by bringing those circumstances into their living rooms every week.

But one episode has long stood out as his most controversial: “Maude’s Dilemma,” a two-part episode airing in the first season, wherein the lead character (played by Bea Arthur) decides to get an abortion. At the time, abortions were legal in the state of New York (where Maude and her family lived), but the Roe v. Wade verdict was still two months away. CBS was wary about...

Silver Lining Entertainment Dissolving: Jeff Golenberg & Jason Shapiro Launch Strand Entertainment, Sam Maydew Starts 734 Media
Image
Exclusive: After more than a decade, Silver Lining Entertainment, the management and production company founded by veterans Jeff Golenberg and Sam Maydew, is dissolving.

Golenberg and fellow Silver Lining partner Jason Shapiro have launched Strand Entertainment, a management and production company based in Los Angeles, bringing most of Silver Lining’s managers with them. Maydew has formed his own management/production company, 734 Media. The split we hear was amicable, with the former partners’ paths diverging, a process accelerated by the pandemic.

Joining Golenberg and Shapiro in their new venture are longtime colleagues Tarik Kanafani, Emily Rifanburg, Kaelyn Hutchins, and Aileen Lewis. Jeff’s brother, manager/producer Rob Golenberg, who was a partner at Silver Lining, has formed GoGi Entertainment, a new production company focused on international productions, with his former assistant Paulina Giron Velasquez. He also plans to continue to work alongside the Strand principals and their joint production entity,...

‘Last Week Tonight’ Host John Oliver Dings Apple TV+ Saying Streamer Is “Where Celebrities Go To Hide”
Image
John Oliver took a jab at Apple TV+ during the latest episode of his HBO show Last Week Tonight.

During a segment about the way Dollar Tree and Dollar General stores are run, Oliver brought up TikTok videos of retail employees complaining about the work conditions, including a staffer who was asked to reopen her store shortly after it had been robbed.

“An armed robbery is a traumatic event people need time to recover from,” Oliver said before delivering the punchline, “It’s not something you can just ignore like a spam call or a broken light bulb or any show on Apple TV.”

Oliver then asked his viewers, “Did you know Octavia Spencer starred as a true crime podcaster on a show called Truth Be Told for three seasons?”

“Of course you didn’t. It’s Apple TV, where celebrities go to hide,” he quipped.

Earlier this year, Spencer...

How ‘Drag Me to Dinner’ Complements ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’
Image
It goes without saying that RuPaul’s Drag Race redefined the relationship between drag and the mainstream. And while the reality competition series showcases the incomparable talents of its performers, their appearances on the show are entangled in the high-stakes structure of the format. For those needing a reprieve from the high-pressure nature of Rpdr, there is Hulu’s new series Drag Me to Dinner. Unlike Drag Race, Drag Me to Dinner mocks the former's format with a faux contest where two pairs of drag queens “compete” to throw the best dinner party. The parties, which are really campy sketches, are humorously assessed by the show’s panel of "judgers": Neil Patrick Harris, Bianca Del Rio, Haneefah Wood, David Burtka, and host Murray Hill. By sending up the conventions of competition television while showcasing the immense talents of its contestants, Drag Me to Dinner is the perfect low-stakes complement to Drag Race.

Neil Patrick Harris & ‘Drag Me to Dinner’ Cast on the Bingeworthy Faux Cooking Competition
Image
Absurdity is on the menu in Drag Me to Dinner, a faux game show pitting drag queens against each other as they assemble the most glamorous themed dinner parties they can muster in 30 minutes. The roasts (verbal and edible) are served piping hot, and the stars try their best not to break as the drag queens rush to get dinner on table. But when you spend almost all of the time trying to crack a smile onto your co-star’s faces, you end up with more breaks than Jimmy Fallon on Saturday Night Live. Husbands Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka serve as “judger” (spelling intentional) and advisor, respectively, in the series, streaming now on Hulu just in time for Pride 2023. With Harris on the judger panel are RuPaul’s Drag Race superstar Bianca Del Rio and Hello Tomorrow star Haneefah Wood (she also sings the opening sequence and gives...

Drag Me to Dinner Stars Dish About Their New Reality Show
Image
This summer, it’s all about shiny pumps, batting eyelashes, and drag queens hosting fabulous dinner parties (ish). Or at least trying to. That’s the inventive premise creators/producers Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka put in their new Hula drag-a-ganza, deliciously dubbed Drag Me to Dinner.

The lowdown: In a fourth-wall-breaking, tongue-in-cheek send-up to traditional reality show competitions, two teams of popular drag queens go beehive to beehive to in order to toss together the most “drag-tastical” dinner party ever. The winners are crowned by three judges — Harris, drag superstar Bianca Del Rio, and Haneefah Wood. The host is none other than the New York City legend Murray Hill, “the hardest-working middle-aged man in show business.”

The set-up: Every episode revolves around a specific theme, which is revealed by Burtka, who made a dent as a lifestyle expert in Life's a Party. Teams will focus on: food and drink,...

Exclusive: Neil Patrick Harris and Husband David Burtka Dish on Drag Me to Dinner
Image
Dear ones, dinner is being served. But keep your napkins handy. You may need them to cover your mouths from uproarious laughter. Or not. Either way, the new Hulu romp, Drag Me To Dinner, from creators/producers Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka delivers a clever if not lighthearted take on reality show competitions. Where RuPaul offered a platform for drag queens to strut their stuff, here, Harris and Burtka rely on their LGBTQ+ friends to sashay themselves into the kitchen and dining room to pull off the ultimate soirée. Tasty? Indeed.

With episode titles like Big Bottom, Big Top, and Beach Blanket Bing-Ho, viewers can expect plenty of comedy as two pairs of drag queens compete in each episode to create the best meal and themed “party” — cocktails, decorations, and all. Drag sensation Bianca Del Rio is on board as one of the judges. Murray Hill steps into hosting duties.

Tex Avery and Flying Cars: Finding the Darkness in the World of ‘Hello Tomorrow’
Image
The world of “Hello Tomorrow” loves both the retro and future in its retro-future aesthetic, lending the Apple TV+ series a visual distinctiveness. While the story itself — an exploration of ambition, the American Dream, and family ties — deals in classic tropes, the show’s presentation blends the greatest stylistic hits of the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s with technological leaps of fancy straight out of a World’s Fair catalog and an episode of “The Jetsons.”

Less obvious an influence? Tex Avery, one of the most significant contributors to the Looney Tunes characters and the man behind a series of cartoons outlining the World of Tomorrow, whose work acted as inspiration for the pleasant facades and gizmo-gadgets of the series’ Vistaville. A mouse-trap, Rube Goldbergesque vibe suffuses the world of “Hello Tomorrow,” where cheerfulness masks latent violence — as suburban housewife Marie (Annie McNamara) finds out all too quickly moments into the first episode,...

Hello Tomorrow: Are There Really Houses On The Moon (Or Is It A Scam?)
Image
Spoilers for Hello Tomorrow's episodes 1, 2, and 3 below! Many clues in Hello Tomorrow's first three episodes raise suspicion surrounding the existence of the houses on the moon, which makes it hard not to wonder if the whole setup is a scam. In its initial moments, Hello Tomorrow sets the stage for its alternate reality sci-fi drama by depicting a plausible world rife with advanced robots and floating vehicles. With what follows, it puts its main character Jack Billings' sales forte on full display by showing the skills and charm with which he wins over his customers and convinces them to buy houses on the moon.

As the Apple TV+ sci-fi show Hello Tomorrow progresses, it gradually peels back layers of Jack's characterization by introducing his son. While this addition to Jack's Hello Tomorrow narrative plays a crucial role in revealing an emotional side of his personality and highlights his life outside his sales job,...

Though they merely play salesmen in Apple TV+‘s new comedy, Hello Tomorrow!, Billy Crudup and Nicholas Podany clearly learned a thing or two about hawking timeshares on… the moon.

“Tell me something, Matt — how’s that office there treating you?” asked Podany during a recent Zoom call with TVLine. “Is it big enough? You got enough light coming in? Well, up on the moon there’s nothing but acres for you to do whatever you like up there. You like seeing the stars? Boom, baby!”

Hello Tomorrow! (2023)
‘Hello Tomorrow!’ Stars Talk Selling Real Estate on the Moon (Video)
Hello Tomorrow! (2023)
Hello Tomorrow!, premiering February 17 on Apple TV+, may be set in what looks like 1950s America, but this is very much a retro-future world, one created by Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen and in which people sell real estate on the moon. “It’s meant to let people see what America’s going to look like in the future and what it has looked like in the past and what it is like in the present. It is America as we’ve seen America in a lot of different iterations, all of which are driving for the same thing: sell, sell, sell,” says one of the show’s stars Billy Crudup, who plays salesman Jack Billings. Crudup sat down with Haneefah Wood (Shirley Stedman), Dewshane Williams (Herb Porter), and Alison Pill (Myrtle Mayburn) to talk about the new series with TV Insider’s Kate Hahn during the Winter 2023 Television Critics Association Press Tour.

‘Hello Tomorrow!’ Is a Lunar Mission That Stalls Out: TV Review
Image
Last year, Apple TV+ had a zeitgeist hit with “Severance,” a show that leveraged a high-polish gleam and an eerily out-of-time aesthetic to tell a story of people who were ultimately strangers to themselves. The streamer could be said to be attempting the same feat twice with “Hello Tomorrow!,” set in a 1950s idea of the future and centering an affably empty salesman played by Billy Crudup. Here, though, the ideas are unrewarding enough that the worked-over look of the show grows tiresome, as though it’s covering for a lack in the series’ writing.

Created by Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen, “Hello Tomorrow!” features Crudup in something like the mode for which he won an Emmy as “The Morning Show’s” devious executive. Here, he plays Jack, a wheel-spinning operator who is selling timeshares on the moon. His customers are people who, as in our collective memory of our nation’s midcentury past,...

Billy Crudup’s ‘Hello Tomorrow’ Shoots for the Moon and Gets Lost in the Stars
Image
At first, the setting of “Hello Tomorrow” looks familiar. White picket fences border lush green yards. Classic cars cruise through the quaint neighborhood. A mother walks her baby in a sweet, blue bassinet… except the bassinet doesn’t have wheels. Neither do the cars. And those yards are being watered by flying robots, painted in pastel hues sure to please the Betty Draper-types who own them. (Not that Betty Draper takes kindly to hovering interlopers.)

Merging ’50s Americana with futuristic machinery, “Hello Tomorrow” comes across like “Mad Men” mixed with “The Jetsons” — a “retro future” that combines customs of the past with space-age technology… also of the past. The technology in Amit Bhalla and Lucas Jansen’s Apple TV+ series is the stuff of baby boomers’ imaginations, not Gen Z’s, meaning there’s no cell phones, internet, or even color TV. Instead, commuters fly to work in the...

‘Hello Tomorrow!’ Review: Billy Crudup in Apple TV+’s Style-Over-Substance Futuristic Dramedy
Image
If there’s one thing Apple TV+’s Hello Tomorrow! knows, it’s how to paint a pretty picture. The exteriors of its retro-futuristic world are replete with sleek hovercars and friendly-looking robots, the interiors with tasteful midcentury furniture. Within that mileiu, its nattily dressed characters conjure a rosier vision still: The Brightside sales team, led by Jack (Billy Crudup), push fantasies of affordable luxuries on the moon — 200,000 miles away from Earthly drudgeries like debts, failed marriages and dead-end jobs.

So enticing is this dream that Jack himself frequently seems to lose sight of the gap between the pitch and the reality — much of the plot centers on his attempts to hide that the lunar timeshares he’s hawking aren’t all they’re made out to be. For Jack to get caught up in his lofty ambitions, though, is one thing. It’s another for the series to do the same.

Gabrielle Union Teases Possible New ‘Bring It On’ Movie: ‘We’ve Been Developing a Sequel Forever’
Image
“Brr, it’s cold in here…” Could there be some future Clovers in the atmosphere?

Gabrielle Union, who played Isis in 2000’s “Bring It On,” teased a potential new installment in the iconic cheerleading film franchise at the “Truth Be Told” Season 3 premiere on Thursday.

“We’ve been developing a sequel forever,” Union told Variety. “But for folks who don’t exactly understand how long development can take in Hollywood, that could be five minutes or 50 years.”

“Bring It On,” which also starred Kirsten Dunst, Eliza Dushku and Jesse Bradford, spurred five direct-to-video sequels and a Halloween-themed TV sequel, but all without the original cast. Along with “Love & Basketball,” “Bring It On” was Union’s breakthrough movie, leading to a successful career in both film and TV.

Most recently, Union joined Apple TV+’s “Truth Be Told” for Season 3, which follows investigative journalist turned true crime podcaster Poppy (Octavia Spencer...

Hello Tomorrow trailer: Billy Crudup sells time-shares on the Moon
Jerry Seinfeld
Have we just given up on hovercars? I feel like we’ve been promised hovercars for as long as I can remember, but where are they? I’m looking outside right now. I see cars. No hover. Just wheels. It helps if you read that in a Jerry Seinfeld voice. Although hovercars may never become part of our lives, we’ll have to turn to entertainment to scratch that itch. Apple TV+ has released the first trailer for Hello Tomorrow!, an upcoming dramedy set in a retro-future world filled with fantastic mid-century hovercars.

Billy Crudup Wants to Sell You the Moon in 'Hello Tomorrow!' Trailer
Image
"Congratulations on your new home in the stars!" Apple has released an official trailer for a sci-fi comedy series titled Hello Tomorrow!, arriving for streaming February on their Apple TV+ platform. This has a peculiar concept that involves classic sci-fi concepts like floating cars, rocket packs, and robo helpers even though it's all set in the past. "What if the life you’ve always dreamed of was just one great deal away?" In a retro-futuristic world, charismatic salesman Jack Billings leads a team of fellow sales associates determined to revitalize their customers' lives by hawking timeshares on the moon. Billy Crudup stars as Jack Billings, along with Haneefah Wood, Alison Pill, Nicholas Podany, Matthew Maher, Dewshane Williams, and Hank Azaria. It's pretty obvious from this trailer what's going on, it looks like one big setup to just get rid of people by firing them into space. I wonder if they figure it all out,...
