Senate Republicans on the Judiciary Committee voted on Thursday in favor of former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro’s nomination to serve as permanent U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia.
But they did so without any Democrats present on the committee, as they staged a walkout as Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-ia) moved to vote on a slate of judicial appointments. Democrats primarily focused on the nomination of Emil Bove, who represented Trump in his New York criminal case and later served as acting deputy attorney general, to serve as an appellate judge.
Trump appointed Pirro to serve as acting U.S. attorney in May, the latest Fox News figure to get a spot in his administration. She was a strident defender of the president on Fox News’ The Five, which is the top-rated show on cable news.

As President Donald Trump weighs sending U.S. forces to help Israel bomb Iran — and potentially plunge the nation into a new war — his decision is being influenced by bellicose on-air content at Fox News. The favored network of the president has put forth a parade of hosts, guests, and professional commentators with an effusively pro-war and pro-regime change message.
According to an administration official and another close associate of the commander-in-chief, Trump’s heavy consumption of Fox News content is increasing his appetite for direct military confrontation with Iran.

Stephen A. Smith has become the latest target of “The Daily Show,” with the late night program releasing a new biofilm mocking the sports television personality for his various on-air takes.
The nearly 7-minute video, titled “Stephen A. Smith: Greatest of All Take-Havers,” starts with a look at his childhood, with Smith saying he was born in the Bronx and raised in Queens with the “greatest mom in the world.”
“That’s right, every other mom in the world is a scrub. I don’t care if your mother, Theresa, or that hot mom from The Brady Bunch,” Craig Kilborn says in a voice narration. “Those moms should be riding the bench behind Janet Smith.”
It proceeds to jump forward Smith’s enrollment at the Fashion Institute of Technology, which Kilborn said “might not have greatest tradition of sports” but “definitely had a playoff.”

Donald Trump, who was raised Presbyterian and does not attend church regularly, would apparently like to crown himself the next pope.
Late Friday, the president posted an AI image of himself sitting on a gold throne wearing the traditional attire including a white cassock and a cross necklace. He has a serious expression and is holding up a finger. The White House shared Trump’s AI portrait on social media as well.

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with U.S. president Donald Trump on Friday, and was promptly screamed at by Trump and Vice President Jd Vance. According to “The View” host Whoopi Goldberg, it was “one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever seen.”
Among other things, Zelenskyy was yelled at for apparently not being grateful enough for U.S. support in the war waged against Ukraine by Russia, despite the fact that Zelenskyy has repeatedly thanked the U.S. very publicly. Eventually, Trump told Zelenskyy that “You’re gambling with World War III.”
“That has to be one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever seen,” Whoopi said angrily after watching the clip on Monday. “This is the leader of a sovereign nation, and you are doing theater with him because you’re trying to show that you’re the hard guy.”

Update, with video: Calling last week’s Trump-Zelensky-Vance Oval Office showdown “one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever seen,” The View moderator Whoopi Goldberg made no secret of which side she’s on.
“I do stand with you, Zelensky, because you’ve been fighting, your country has been fighting,” Goldberg said on today’s View, adding, I stand with y’all, because many countries in our world have a habit of going in and invading other countries. And we all have said, for the past at least 100 years, we don’t like that. We don’t want to do that. We don’t want to be that. And here we are. Who are we?”
Goldberg added that she thought the Oval Office meeting, in which Trump and Vance effectively switched sides from supporting Ukraine to supporting Russia, was “chilling.”

It’ll be debated for some time whether Donald Trump’s confrontation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was spontaneous or a pre-planned ambush, but by the end of the 15-minute exchange Friday, Trump relished how it would all play: “This is going to be great television.”
The idea that Trump has created a reality TV presidency is well-worn, but the reaction to the shout-fest, that it signals a breakdown in U.S.-Ukrainian relations and perhaps Western alliances, is hardly trivial.
“Wow, just wow,” said CNN’s Dana Bash, after the network finished running video of the exchange, before going to the network’s chief White House correspondents and then foreign correspondents to talk about the implications.
Such reactions continued throughout the day as the story dominated cable news and social media.

Not even Trump’s staffers are on board with the President’s plan for the U.S. to “take over” the Gaza Strip. “The Daily Show” host and senior correspondent Desi Lydic proved that by showing off a memorable reaction shot of Trump’s current Chief of Staff, Susie Wiles.
On Wednesday, Trump suggested that the Palestinian territory known as the Gaza Strip be redeveloped as a “Riviera of the Middle East” owned by America. Trump then said the territory’s residents would be “resettled” elsewhere. These statements have caused ripples of panic across the world as both sides in the war between Israel and Hamas just recently agreed to a temporary ceasefire in January.
While he has since walked back that plan, the temporary panic was still present in Trump’s own party.
“Even his Chief of Staff was shocked,” Lydic said on Wednesday night before flashing a picture of Wiles.

Four years after attempting to overturn the results of the election, leading to a deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol, Donald Trump was certified as the winner of the 2024 presidential contest.
In a heavily fortified Capitol complex, a joint session of Congress gathered Monday to listen as the electoral vote results of each state were read off.
Presiding over the session was the president of the Senate, Vice President Kamala Harris, in the position of announcing the winner of an election that she lost. Harris kept a slight smile as she read off the tally, 312-226. Republicans cheered for Trump, and Democrats responded with a large ovation for her.
On CNN, Dana Bash noted the heavy security today, and that so many that backed Trump’s challenge of the 2020 results were still present and actually now in positions of leadership. They include Mike Johnson, who is now speaker of the House.

Sen. Lindsey Graham doesn’t seem eager to send his congressional colleagues to jail. The Republican senator publicly disagreed with President-elect Donald Trump’s statement that the members of the Jan. 6 committee who investigated him for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and attack the Capitol should be imprisoned.
“President-elect Trump told me he thinks the members of the January 6th Committee should go to jail. Do you agree with that statement?” moderator Kristen Welker asked Graham on Sunday’s episode of Meet the Press on NBC.
“No,” Graham said succinctly.

Within Donald Trump’s government-in-waiting, there is a fresh debate over whether and how thoroughly the president-elect should follow through on his campaign promise to attack or even invade Mexico, as part of the “war” he’s pledged to wage against powerful drug cartels.

In the Season 22 finale of Real Time With Bill Maher, the host took aim at Donald Trump’s much-derided cabinet picks, even pausing at one point to laugh heartily as he implied that the jokes write themselves.
“Do I really have to write jokes for this?” Bill Maher said amid chuckles.
Beginning his last episode of the year, Maher started with an off-color joke referencing Trump’s Access Hollywood tape: “The Republicans, man, when they take power, they grab it by the pussy. They don’t f— around. They’re not even in charge yet, they just won the election. Already, big changes in the House. They elected the first transgender person in the House, so immediately the Republicans have now banned her from being able to go to the restroom. He said, “Right away, Lindsey Graham volunteered to check for dicks.

Updated, with Gaetz resigning his congressional seat: Donald Trump has nominated Rep.. Matt Gaetz (R-fl) to serve as attorney general, a surprise pick that will please the president-elect’s Maga allies but may prove to be a flashpoint in the confirmation process.
There already are doubts that Gaetz will have the Senate votes, even with the Republicans set to control the chamber.
The selection of Gaetz, a key ally and partisan flamethrower, also is raising alarm among Democrats over the independence of the Justice Department, as Trump has vowed to enact retribution on political enemies.
More than anything, Gaetz has been in lockstep with Trump over his view of the DOJ.
Trump said in a statement, “Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponization of our Justice System. Matt will end Weaponized Government, protect our Borders, dismantle Criminal Organizations and restore Americans’ badly-shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department.

Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season will kick off nearly over a month ahead of the 2024 presidential election with plenty of material for its cold opens and other political skits.

Doug Emhoff (who has been portrayed in the past by Martin Short) and Vice President Tim Walz will also likely receive parodies, though Short’s Only Murders in the Building costar Steve Martin has declined the ask to portray Walz.

Ghost of John McCain, the Off Broadway musical comedy that sent Meghan McCain into a summer-long pre-opening tizzy, has arrived after months of free publicity.
A modestly entertaining, fitfully clever political satire that takes place entirely within the frazzled head of Donald Trump, a place that looks a lot like a three-star hotel lobby populated by the likes of, among others, the late Arizona senator, Hillary Clinton, Eva Peron, Taylor Swift, Joe Biden, Lindsey Graham and a Melania-Ivanka mash-up referred to simply as Daughter-Wife.
Ghost of John McCain ultimately comes off as a nicely performed, conceptually overcooked 90-minute SNL cold open set to an amiably cartoonish show tune score.
With a book by Scott Elmegreen, a score by Drew Fornarola and direction by Catie Davis, Ghost of John McCain was co-conceived by McCain’s first chief of staff Grant Woods, and a gentle affection for the “Maverick” underlines the entire...

Sen. Lindsey Graham is on a campaign to alter Nebraska’s election laws to deliver an advantage to former president Donald Trump.
“The entire federal delegation of Nebraska, House members and two senators, want this changed,” Graham said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press. “To my friends in Nebraska, that one electoral vote could be the difference between Harris being president and not, and she’s a disaster for Nebraska and the world.”

Prominent Republicans — Sens. J.D. Vance, Lindsey Graham and Tom Cotton — all refused to disavow North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson following reporting by CNN that uncovered comments he made online calling himself a “black Nazi” and supporting reinstating slavery before entering politics.
When asked about Robinson’s inflammatory posts, GOP vice presidential nominee Vance equivocated. “I don’t not believe him, I don’t believe him. I just think that you have to let these things sometimes play out in the court of public opinion,” he said Saturday.

It was Sara Haines‘ birthday on Wednesday’s (September 18) episode of The View, but after a bit of celebration (including walking out to Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” as a nod to her coffee habit), they got right to work discussing the day’s “Hot Topics.” First, they all reflected on Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ recent comments that Vice President Kamala Harris doesn’t have anyone to keep her “humble” since she doesn’t have biological children, which basically leaned right into Jd Vance’s “Childless Cat Lady” controversy. Whoopi Goldberg led the charge in response to the clip, saying, “You know what really pisses me off about this is, if you really cared about the children, where are the tax credits? Where’s the paid family leave?” Sunny Hostin then seized on the opportunity to call out some other prominent Republicans who happen to also be childless, saying, “I’m sorry,...

Laura Loomer — the far-right conspiracy theorist, self-described “proud” anti-Muslim bigot, and close associate of former and perhaps future President Donald Trump — has triggered a multi-day meltdown among the Maga elite and powerful GOP allies who worry that she’s an extreme liability. But in remarks at a California press conference on Friday, Trump signaled that he had no problem with Loomer’s frequently racist rhetoric about immigrants and his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I don’t control Laura,” he said. “She’s a free spirit.”

Donald Trump called into Fox & Friends this morning, continuing to insist that he won Tuesday’s presidential debate against Kamala Harris yet also that the ABC News event was unfair and “three against one.”
That was a reference to David Muir and Linsey Davis, who in co-moderating also did fact-checks of some of the former president’s wildest claims.
The former president was intent on spinning his performance at the debate, even though he was repeatedly baited by Harris, often sounded angry and went back to his unfounded claim that he won the 2020 election.
The effort to control the narrative started just minutes after the event ended, when both campaigns dispatched their armies of surrogates to the spin room, the Olympic-sized pool area of blue carpet in the Philadelphia Convention Center. The spin room spectacle is an endurance test for campaign talking heads to stick the talking points in the...

Donald Trump imploded on the debate stage against Kamala Harris on Tuesday night. The former president fell for obvious bait presented by the vice president, delivered a series of angry diatribes in the style of his rallies, and told lies that repeatedly forced ABC News’ moderators to fact-check him in real-time.
Right-wing lawmakers and commentators are offering a menu of excuses to minimize the damage. In the post-debate spin room and on social media, the former president’s allies are floating everything from moderator bias, to conspiracies about hidden earpieces,...

Exclusive: Ghost Of John McCain, the new, upcoming Off Broadway musical satire that finds the late Senator in a very, very strange heaven, has found its cast for characters that include McCain, Donald Trump, Donald Trump’s brain and the just-added Kamala Harris.
An example: Luke Kolbe Mannikus, a handsomely baby-faced recent college grad with no fewer than three Broadway credits since his fairly recent childhood a decade ago, will play Donald Trump.
Jason Tam, who played the apostle Peter in the hit NBC Live event Jesus Christ Superstar, and starred in Broadway’s Be More Chill, will play John McCain, and Aaron Michael Ray (The Public Theater’s acclaimed The Low Road), will play Donald Trump’s Brain.
And reflecting swift-moving real-world developments, Zonya Love has just been added to the cast as Kamala Harris.

Founding Seacoast Pastor Greg Surratt, a longtime friend and close mentor who counseled Scott while he weighed a 2024 Republican presidential bid, officiated. The groom’s older brother, Ben Scott, was his best man.
