20 Years Of Soni Razdan’s Nazar
Image
Looking back at 2005’s Nazar, Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on the film, directed by Soni Razdan that featured the debut of Meera.

The heroine tries to smoulder over the sea-splashed boulder. Yup, the beach is back..and the intentions are bolder! Or so the film’s voluptuous publicity suggests. Alas, for those who expect a whole lotta oomph to be crammed into the thriller, there’s bad news.

Meera’s Bollywood debut proves her to be a competent actress. But she doesn’t have that oomphy quality which would have elevated the film’s mass-acceptance level.

Given its limitations, Nazar is a bit of a damp squib. The director Soni Razdan’s loose grip over her plot is matched by an absence of technical wherewithal in the story.

All through the longish drama, we are treated to the protagonist’s purportedly eerie hallucinations.

Meera can ‘see’ the dead before they die.

’12th Fail’ Review: An Immersive Testament To An Unyielding Resolution
Image
Embarking on the arduous journey of preparing for the Upsc, one of India’s most formidable competitive exams, has evolved from an enigma to a well-explored odyssey for young students. Sincere web series like Tvf Aspirants and Sandeep Bhaiya have acted as our guides, offering glimpses into the fiercely competitive world thriving in the heart of Rajinder Nagar, painting a vivid picture of the sacrifices, yearning, and challenges that define the journey. Yet, amid this familiar backdrop, Vidhu Vinod Chopra‘s latest outing, 12th Fail emerges as a breath of fresh air cutting across the clichés associated with the genre of the undying spirit of an underdog story. Adapted from Anurag Pathak’s eponymous novel and inspired by the real-life saga of Ips Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, the film unveils a finely nuanced tale unraveling the indomitable spirit of a young student. What sets it apart is the ability to...

’12th Fail’ Movie Review | Absolutely Unmissable
Image
Post ‘3 Idiots’ producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra as director offers yet another awe inspiring story to the audience. For audience who must be fans of ‘3 idiots’ might find fleeting similarities on a couple of occasions. For instance, ‘3 Idiots’ created the catch phrase ‘Aal Izz Well’, ’12th Fail’ should be credited for ‘Restart’, which might prove to be of great significance for every student at any level, in any stream. There is also a scene inspired by the ‘definition of machine’ scene in ‘3 Idiots’ that works bang on.

A scene in the final reels summarises the crux of the story idea or the theme. When Manoj Kumar Sharma (Vikrant Massey) visits a Dsp (Priyanshu Chatterjee), is greeted with a salute; he informs who he is to the pleasant surprise of the Dsp who remembers the student who had failed in class 12 but was inspired with the Dsp and vowed to become one.

12th Fail review – Indian exam yarn offers hope on overcoming corruption and poverty
Vikrant Massey in 14 Phere (2021)
This semi-true story of a young farmer who uses his grandmother’s life savings to sit police officer exams in Delhi fosters the idea that success is possible through effort alone

Perhaps it’s only an accident of scheduling, but you could read this film as a little cinematic pep talk for young people going back to education after their half-term rest. It’s certainly a warm, if sentimental, paean to the idea that success in India, despite endemic corruption and the caste system, can still be achieved through meritocratic means.

The vehicle for this is the semi-true parable of Manoj Kumar Sharma (Vikrant Massey), the middle child of a family of farmers from Chambal. Oppressed by crooked local cops and a mayor who demands bribes for everything, Manoj accepts the life savings of his peppery grandmother (Sarita Joshi) to go to Delhi and take the challenging civil service exams...

“Roohi is a rambunctious mix of mirth and scares that is constantly engaging” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Roohi

Starring Janhvi Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma

Directed by Hardik Mehta

There are three principal actors playing four main characters in Roohi, all whipping up a Rambunctious mix of mirth and scares that lovers of the horror-comedy genre will love and laugh over until their bellies ache. This is the kind of wildly zany entertainment that doesn’t give us a chance to ask the one fundamental question that we must: do ghosts really exist? Well, even if they don’t they should, so that a film as outrageously over-the-top as this gets a chance to do a macabre yet amusing dance around our subconscious fear of the unknown.

Into this the world of spirits dive two friends Bhawra (Rajkummar Rao) and Kattani (Varun Sharma) who we gather are langotiya friends. Cheesy from head to toe (Rao and Sharma have a lot of fun with hair dye) they speak...

Movie Review | Roohi: Uniquely delightful & funny horror pop corn
Image
Roohi movie review is here. The Hindi language horror comedy film directed by Hardik Mehta is produced by Dinesh Vijan and Mrighdeep Singh Lamba under the banner Maddock Films in association with Jio Studios. Roohi stars Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor and Varun Sharma in main leads. Roohi is hitting the screens on 11 March 2021.

Roohi movie review

Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock is back with another horror after the amazing Stree (2018). As per the Maddock’s horror tradition, Roohi is a delightful horror comedy that has a surprisingly unique meta layer.

Set somewhere in Uttar Pradesh two buddies Bhawra (Rajkummar Rao) and Kattanni (Varun Sharma) are part of the groom kidnapping (Pakaruah shaadi / Jabaria shaadi) gang led by Guniya Shakeel (Manav Vij). One day they get the assignment to kidnap Roohi (Janhvi Kapoor). Circumstances forced Bhawra and Kattanni to keep Roohi at a safe place amidst the jungle for a few days.

Sarita Joshi: ‘Sakubai’ made me recall a time when I bonded with my house help
Image
Actress Sarita Joshi says working on the teleplay Sakubai reminded her of the time when she bonded with her house help after losing her husband.

"‘Sakubai' is not just about the struggles of a house help but is emblematic of all women who continue to smile through the ups and downs of their lives," Sarita said.

Sarita Joshi continued, "When I first read the play, it reminded me of all the women who have cooked for me, helped me raise my daughters, and looked after my home. I was reminded of their innate dignity, generosity and also their pain. Sakubai made me recall a time in my life when I had bonded with a house help who, like me, had lost her husband. Like her, I too had started wearing white constantly till I realised, I had to embrace colour once again for the sake of my daughters. I gifted...
