Recommended New Books on Filmmaking: Twin Peaks, Walter Murch, Brian De Palma’s Unproduced Script & More
Image
David Lynch passed a little more than six months ago, and the world of cinema is still mourning. Let’s start with a book devoted to two of the most important elements of any Lynch creation—music and sound—followed by works from Walter Murch and Neil Jordan, new books on music, and a stack of novels made for summer reading.

Always Music In the Air: The Sounds of Twin Peaks by Scott Ryan (Tucker DS Press)

We have Scott Ryan to thank for some of the finest coverage of David Lynch’s career—namely, the Twin Peaks-dedicated Blue Rose Magazine, Fire Walk With Me: Your Laura Disappeared, and Lost Highway: The Fist of Love. Ryan’s latest, Always Music In the Air: The Sounds of Twin Peaks, is another deep dive into the works of David Lynch, this time all three seasons of Twin Peaks. Here, Ryan discusses the late,...

‘Mr Inbetween’ Ending Explained: How the Finale Episode Wrapped Things up for Each Major Character
Image
FX’s Mr. Inbetween was one of the most underrated gems on television. Smart, sharp, and unlike anything else on the network. For an Australian import, it stood tall alongside FX’s best, blending gritty crime drama with pitch-black humor and moments of surprising tenderness. The show followed Ray Shoesmith, a criminal-for-hire trying to juggle the messiness of real life: being a dad, a friend, a brother, and a killer.

What made it even more impressive was that Ray wasn’t just played by Scott Ryan. He created the entire series, writing every episode with a voice that was authentic, raw, and compelling. Sure, the premise wasn’t entirely original. Hitman with a heart? We’ve seen it. But Mr. Inbetween made it feel fresh, mostly thanks to its lean writing and unforgettable cast of characters.

There was the unfiltered chaos of Freddy, the loyal but dim Gary, and Ray...

Move Over, Breaking Bad! This ‘Hidden Gem’ Crime Drama Might Just Be Even Better
Image
Here’s The New Crime Drama That Can Rival Breaking Bad (Photo Credit – Prime Video)

Breaking Bad has long reigned as the gold standard of darkly comedic crime dramas for years, but there’s a “hidden gem” that some fans believe gives Vince Gilligan’s masterpiece a run for its money. After over a decade, the Australian series Mr Inbetween has quietly earned critical and audience acclaim. It is praised for its sharp writing, tight direction, and standout performances.

Mr Inbetween: A Perfect Blend Of Crime, Humor & Heart

Described as a gripping mix of action, tension, heart, and humor, Mr Inbetween has drawn inevitable comparisons to Breaking Bad. For those who loved the American classic, this lesser-known Aussie counterpart is a must-watch, with all three seasons available for streaming on Disney Plus.

The show, which premiered in 2018, follows Ray Shoesmith, a hitman entrenched in Sydney’s criminal underworld. But his...

This Bingeworthy TV Series on Hulu Delivers an Unexpected Antihero You Can't Help But Root For
Image
The Aussies have always done things their own way. From cuisine to sport to the entertainment industry, there is a different, edgier tone to the Land Down Under productions that you don't see anywhere else. George Miller's Mad Max franchise is a good example of what a unique Australian film looks like. However, on the small screen, there is a criminally underrated show that also serves as a brilliant example of the eccentric nature of the island continent and nation. Mr. Inbetween originally aired on FX from 2018-2021. It's directed by Joel Edgerton's brother, Nash Edgerton, and stars Scott Ryan in the lead role of Ray Shoesmith, a tough-as-nails man for hire who works among the seediest and sordid gangsters around. In the 26 thirty-minute episodes now available to stream on Hulu, he finds himself in all kinds of bizarre and harrowing experiences with only his straight-up savvy and intelligence to rely on.

‘Moonlighting’ Fans Rejoice — New Restoration Includes ‘Lost’ Scenes and 1 Important Piece of Music Missing from DVDs
Image
“Moonlighting” lovers are a dedicated crew — it was the kind of wildly imaginative, smart, sophisticated series that inspired passionate loyalty over the course of its 66 episodes (the two-part pilot is shown as a single episode) and five seasons on the air. What’s even more remarkable about fans’ dedication is the relative rarity of the series; the Glenn Gordon Caron-created genre hybrid has rarely been in regular syndication and its DVD releases have been out of print since 2013.

Not that the DVD releases really satisfied the die-hard fans. Sure, they got to relive just what all the fuss was about when the show took the country by storm back in 1985, as former model Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) and wise guy detective David Addison (a pre-“Die Hard” Bruce Willis) investigated crimes, bickered, broke the fourth wall, and generally served as television trailblazers up to and including the “Moonlighting” curse...

Best Australian TV Series Streaming in the US & UK: Mr Inbetween, Bluey, Deadloch…
Image
Not so long ago, the only Australian TV shows imported by the UK and US were soaps and the odd kids’ series. Neighbours, Home & Away, Prisoner: Cell Block H, Heartbreak High, and child trauma factory Round the Twist went overseas, but not much else.

It didn’t make for a very complete picture. 30 years ago, if you’d asked a British person to conjure up Australia based solely on its available TV output, they’d have pictured a land of bait shops, haunted lighthouses, prison wings, and cul de sacs where good neighbours become good friends. Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.

Here are some of the best Australian TV series currently available to stream in the UK and US. We’ll update this selection as new series arrive.

Recommended New Books on Filmmaking: Revisiting Lost Highway, Watching John Ford, and a Guide to Queer Cinema
Image
Our latest roundup of new books related to the world of cinema is full of indelible imagery––the pale face of Lost Highway’s Mystery Man, John Ford’s craggy visage, and, of course, the Neverland sets from Hook.

Lost Highway: The Fist of Love by Scott Ryan (Tucker DS Press)

Last year, Scott Ryan covered David Lynch’s Twin Peaks prequel in Fire Walk With Me: Your Laura Disappeared. (We featured it here.) In 2023, Ryan studies what he calls “the lowest-grossing, most forgotten film of [Lynch’s] career.” Ryan’s Lost Highway: The Fist of Love is every bit as enthralling and insightful as Your Laura Disappeared. The author zeroes in on the elements of Lost Highway that turned off most (but not all) audiences in 1997 but are titillating new (and revisiting) viewers today. Ryan should know; he was one of those who looked away in the nineties: “The first time I saw it,...

Moonlighting's Most Ambitious Episode Was A Total Departure For Bruce Willis
Image
The sitcom "Moonlighting" debuted on ABC on March 3, 1985, and it was unlike any TV show previously seen. It had the quick banter of a 1940s screwball comedy and crazy sexual tension between stars Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd as detective David Addison and former model-turned-detective, Maddy Hayes. "Moonlighting" broke the fourth wall long before "She-Hulk" and "Deadpool" did it on screen, employed a cold open before it was standard, and often showed sets and production staff on camera. The detective agency dramedy series broke with what viewers were used to fairly often, including an episode based on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," entitled, "Atomic Shakespeare."

In the episode, Willis appears as Petruchio, a man who marries Katherina, played by Shepherd. If Petruchio can make her a docile wife, he gets her dowry. Look, no one ever said that Shakespeare's sensibilities would work for the 21st century. Still,...

‘It was pretty terrifying’: Christiaan Van Vuuren steps into the political arena for ‘Big Deal’
Image
By his own admission, Christiaan Van Vuuren is no political expert.

Despite this, the perspective of the Soul Mates and Bondi Hipsters comedian is central to Big Deal, a two-part ABC factual series examining Australia’s billion-dollar political lobbying industry.

As the presenter of Craig Reucassel’s directorial debut, Van Vuuren sits down with a host of prominent parliamentary and media figures, including Jason Falinski, Sam Dastyari, Scott Ryan, Kate McClymont, Andrew Leigh, Helen Haines, Jacqui Lambie, Katharine Murphy, Linda Burney, and Zali Steggall.

He told If the distance of departure from his previous work was not lost on him.

“It was pretty terrifying,” he said.

“There is an emotional safety when you have control of an edit and you’re in character and it’s comedic.

“This is scarier because you are a bit more out there. It was challenging in that I was talking to people who know...

FX will not renew Mr Inbetween, confirming that the show’s upcoming third season will be its last.

Created, written by and starring Scott Ryan, the Sydney-shot series follows charismatic yet volatile hitman Ray Shoesmith as he juggles his roles of father, ex-husband, boyfriend, and criminal for hire.

The character was first introduced in Ryan’s 2005 mockumentary The Magician.

Mr Inbetween is directed by The Magician editor and producer Nash Edgerton, and produced by Michele Bennett, who also produced the original film.

In what is to be the final season of the Blue-Tongue Films and Pariah Production series, Ray’s world has contracted.

FX’s ‘Mr Inbetween’ Not Returning After Season 3
Image
Scott Ryan’s “Mr Inbetween,” which will premiere its third season on May 25 on FX, is ending with this upcoming season.

The half-hour series, created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton, centers on Ryan’s Ray Shoesmith, a criminal for hire who collects debts, drugs and guns, and sometimes “takes care of people” in a permanent way as he juggles being a dad and taking care of an aging parent.

In the third season of “Mr Inbetween,” Ray will deal with the loss of Bruce, figure out how to care for his aging father Bill (Kenny Graham), and be faced with his daughter Brittany (Chika Yasumura) possibly discovering who he really is. Ray is now working freelance and feeling isolated after severing ties with former boss and confidant Freddy (Damon Herriman), but with business booming, a new connection with kingpin Rafael (Jeremy Sims) compounds Ray’s problems.

‘Mr Inbetween’ to End With Season 3 on FX
Scott Ryan in Mr Inbetween (2018)
Australian drama “Mr Inbetween” will end with its upcoming third season on FX, the cable channel announced Thursday.

The half-hour series — created by, written and starring Scott Ryan and directed by Nash Edgerton — will premiere its nine-episode final season on May 25 at 10/9c, with the first two episodes airing back to back. One new episode will air each subsequent week.

“Mr Inbetween” stars Ray Shoesmith (Ryan) as someone who “takes care of people” — collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis, per FX. Ray demands respect and does not tolerate others disregarding his very clear code of ethics. As Ray’s increasingly volatile work collides with his imploding personal life, he finds himself struggling to stay atop the complex web he has woven.

Here’s the official description for the show’s third and final season:

Foxtel gets ready to green light three Aussie dramas
Image
Brian Walsh.

Belying fears that Foxtel would cut back on local commissions following the Federal Government’s media reforms, the pay TV platform expects to have three Australian dramas in production next year.

Two are intended to be returning series: a fresh take on the crime genre to replace Wentworth, the other a family drama to fill the gap left by A Place to Call Home.

Brian Walsh, who heads the Foxtel Originals division that was created in a restructure in August orchestrated by group CEO Patrick Delany, today reaffirmed the company’s commitment to drama, factual and lifestyle programming after the government halved the obligation on pay drama channels to invest 10 per cent of their annual revenues on local content.

“The new quota system will provide some confidence to the production sector but by no means does it indicate that that is the limit to which we are investing in local production,...

Scott Ryan.

Scott Ryan can be grateful that Helen Mirren and her husband, director Taylor Hackford, are fans of his FX/Fox Showcase show Mr Inbetween.

The couple urged their Hollywood agent, CAA veteran Fred Specktor, to watch both series of the dramedy created by and starring Ryan as hit man for hire Ray Shoesmith.

Specktor binge-watched the show, obtained Ryan’s email from a friend in Australia, got in touch via Zoom and offered to represent him.

“Yeah, sure,” was the laconic response from the actor/writer who had been open to working in the Us.

Specktor, who turned 87 in April, has an illustrious talent roster including Morgan Freeman, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Jeremy Irons, Geoffrey Rush, Peter Bogdanovich, Dan Aykroyd, Philip Kaufman, Stephen Hopkins and playwright Jez Butterworth.

Ryan plays Ray Shoesmith on Mr. Inbetween, a guy who’s a dad, ex-husband, boyfriend, best friend — and hitman.

The series was based on Ryan’s mockumentary indie The Magician, which played the Melbourne Film Festival and was discovered by Nash Edgerton who is an EP and director on Mr. Inbetween. Ryan had originally shot The Magician as a feature, but had cut it down to 30 minutes. When Edgerton wanted to see more, Ryan handed him a copy of the entire film. In the heart-wrenching climactic scene of the last episode of Mr Inbetween, Scott Ryan’s Ray Shoesmith carried out the mercy killing of his brother then torched the house.

So what is next for the troubled hit man and single father as Ryan maps out the third season of the FX/Fox Showcase drama laced with dark humour?

Without spoilers, the show’s star, creator and writer tells If: “Season three will probably be more like season one in tone; it won’t be as dark as season two. But there will also be room for some pretty dark stuff.”

Justin Rosniak as Ray’s gormless best friend Gary will be even more prominent in the new season. Also returning are Chika Yasumura as his daughter Brittany and, he hopes, Damon Herriman as his boss, nightclub owner Freddy.

Ryan is still weighing up whether there...

‘Mr Inbetween’ renewed for a third season
Image
‘Mr Inbetween’.

FX has renewed hitman comedy/drama Mr Inbetween for a third season, due to air locally on Foxtel’s Fox Showcase.

Created, written by and starring Scott Ryan, the Sydney-shot series follows charismatic yet volatile hitman Ray Shoesmith.

Ray “takes care of people” — collecting debts, relieving them of drugs and guns, and often taking care of them on a more permanent basis. Ray demands respect and does not tolerate it when someone disregards his very clear code of ethics.

Ryan won the Aacta Award for Best Lead Actor in a TV drama for his portrayal of Shoesmith last year. It’s a character he first introduced to the world via 2005 mockumentary The Magician.

Other members of the cast include Brooke Satchwell, Justin Rosniak, Chika Yasumura, Nicholas Cassim and Damon Herriman.

Both season one and two were directed by Nash Edgerton and produced by Michele Bennett for Jungle Entertainment,...

‘Mr. Inbetween’ Got Off the Fence in Season Two
In its first season, the title of FX’s Mr. Inbetween suggested several things. The first was the niche its main character, Ray Shoesmith (played by the show’s creator, Scott Ryan), has carved out for himself providing violent, often lethal, solutions to other people’s problems. The second was the show’s careful perching on the line between drama and comedy, with each compact, under-30-minute episode mixing wry humor with much darker material. The third was the way that Ryan couldn’t seem to decide whether he was...

‘Mr Inbetween’ remains dark and distinctly Australian in season two
(L-r) Scott Ryan, Nash Edgerton, Chika Yasumura, Michele Bennett, Nicholas Cassim and Brooke Satchwell.

In the writer’s room that is Scott Ryan’s head, the marginalised and charmingly transgressive characters of Mr Inbetween have staged a coup. Unconcerned with character arcs or narrative demands, they flow with dark authenticity.

“I sit down and I just write a bunch of shit, I sit at the computer and stuff comes into my head. It’s like being a medium that channels spirits. I just channel down whatever it is up there,” explained Ryan the creator and star of the dramedy, the second season of which begins today on Foxtel, at a Q&a screening earlier this week.

“I think we have to be open to that creative force or whatever you want to call it and let it work through you and not try to put conditions on it. You let...

Scott Ryan in Mr Inbetween (2018)
‘Mr Inbetween’ Review: Season 2 Dissects Bullies from the Inside Out
Scott Ryan in Mr Inbetween (2018)
When “Mr Inbetween” premiered a year ago this September, it was enveloped by the rather large shadow of another half-hour hitman series, “Barry.” Bill Hader’s first season had wrapped months prior to Scott Ryan’s FX debut, but it was in the middle of what proved to be a very successful Emmys run and comparisons between the two dark comedies were unavoidable. They still are, as “Barry” continues to dominate cultural conversation (on its way to another likely score at the Emmys) and “Mr Inbetween” hopes to find its own space within the ever-growing TV sphere.

To be clear, it deserves one. The sharply written and well-performed Australian series isn’t in “Barry’s” upper-echelon of comedy, but it’s smart, wickedly funny, and, in Season 2, purposeful. And much of its new direction can be found in the clear differences between this bald, mustachioed hitman (played by Ryan) and his tall,...

Justin Rosniak gets to play good guys
Justin Rosniak in ‘Les Norton’ (Photo: Tony Mott).

Justin Rosniak has been cast as crooks and other wayward types so often in his career he is relishing the opportunity to play more upstanding characters.

“There is not a lot of diversity in characters in Australia so once you get locked into something, some people only see you as one thing,” he tells If. “I often long to get to show my range a bit more, or a softer side.

“So it’s been good that in the last couple of years I have started to get roles that push me in other directions and allow me to add a few different layers.”

In the second season of Mr Inbetween, the comedy/drama created by and starring Scott Ryan as criminal-for-hire Ray Shoesmith, he gets the chance to show a different side to his character Gary, Ray’s best friend.

“Gary...

How Australian Hitman Series ‘Mr. Inbetween’ Squeezed Onto FX – TCA
Nash Edgerton
It all stated with at Melbourne Film Festival that filmmaker/actor Nash Edgerton was attending. He caught Scott Ryan’s half hour mockumentary The Magician about a working-class hitman, Ray Shoesmith, with a sweet family side.

“I thought my brother (Joel) would get a kick out of it; my brother and I have a dark sense of humor,” said Edgerton who has frequently collaborated with his bro on such pics as Gringo, which he directed, and acting in Joel’s Blumhouse/Stx horror pic The Gift.

Ryan had originally shot The Magician as a feature, but had cut it down to 30 minutes. When Edgerton wanted to see more, Ryan handed him a copy of the entire film. With producer Michele Bennett’s help, the feature version of The Magician received a release, and soon after Ryan’s concept found its way to FX.

“There was never any pressure from FX...
