In March 2007 Kotb underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer, and has since become an advocate for breast cancer awareness. Kotb allowed Today (1952) cameras to follow her throughout her cancer battle. After she was announced cancer-free, her story was documented on the show.

Has a brother Adel and sister Hala.

Graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.A. in broadcast journalism (1986).

Has two adopted daughters: Haley Joy Kotb (born February 14, 2017) and Hope Catherine Kotb (born 2019), both were adopted with then boyfriend Joel Schiffman.

Her mother, Sameha ("Sami"), was a long-time employee at the U.S.Library of Congress. Her father Abdel Kader Kotb, who died in 1986, at age 51, was listed in "Who's Who of Technology" as a fossil energy specialist. Both parents were born in Egypt.

Hoda and fiancee Joel Schiffman have ended their relationship after eight years together. The [link=Today (1952)] host and the financier became engaged in 2019, which was also the same year they adopted their second child, Hope Kotb, after bringing home daughter Haley Kotb in 2017. Hoda announced the breakup on The Today Show broadcast on January 31, 2022, reporting that friends and viewers had been speculating as to why she hadn't been wearing her engagement ring.

Hoda was born in Norman, Oklahoma, USA, and grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia, USA and Alexandria, Virginia, USA. Additionally, her family lived in Egypt for a year, as well as in Nigeria.
