It's no industry secret that theatrical comedies are dying at the box office. To get genuine laughs on the big screen, you'll mostly have to settle for quippy dialogue in Marvel movies or a theatrical re-release of classics like "This is Spinal Tap." Oftentimes, comedies are dumped onto streaming services like they're disposable, and it's harder than ever to find comedy movies that are genuinely and constantly funny. But we've assembled a list of some of the best comedies of the 2020s so far.

Some of these movies got their time to shine in theaters, while others missed having a widespread release due to a variety of factors. Some will be the weirdest movies you've ever seen in your life, while others are so funny you've honestly been missing out if you haven't yet seen them. After 10 Years, Has the Fate of an Iconic 93% Rt British Crime Series Finally Been Decided?
Image
Over ten years ago, writers Harry and Jack Williams, famed for their work on the likes of Phoebe Waller-Bridge's critically acclaimed Fleabag and later the Jamie Dornan-led The Tourist, brought to the BBC one of the most underrated British crime dramas of the 21st century. Before it turned into the Tchéky Karyo-led spin-off, Baptiste, The Missing was one of the most chilling productions on the Beeb, and even earned itself an enormous 93% from critics and 90% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Such was the show's incredible success, many have since called for a return, although the brothers Williams have been keeping themselves far too preoccupied... until, perhaps, now. In an interview with Radio Times, the brothers gave fans their most promising tease yet that a return to the cold world of The Missing could soon be on its way. "Yeah, we still talk to Tchéky a lot,...

Jamie Dornan's 96% Rotten Tomatoes British Drama Series Gets a Disappointing Season 3 Update
Image
Sometimes, the power of demand is too strong. For The Touristshowrunners Harry and Jack Williams and series star Jamie Dornan, the plan was to always produce just one season of the thrilling black comedy, only for a reported audience of 11.4 million viewers to force the hand of higher-ups and the green light to be given to a second season. Two years later, in early 2024, the second season debuted to similar success, leaving fans desperate to know if more was on the horizon ever since.

However, unlike previously, it seems that the showrunners, Dornan, and co are remaining steadfast in their belief that the twisting tale told in The Tourist should remain contained. In an exclusive interview with Radio Times, the Williams brothers gave a disappointing update on a potential third season, despite the second ending on a cliffhanger, saying, "Jamie's great and we loved doing it. I think it'd be tough.

‘Caravan’ Review: A Tough and Intimate Czech Drama Carried by a Superb Lead Actress
Image
Actress Ana Geislerova may be something of a household name in the Czech Republic, where she broke out in the mid-’90s and then scooped up lots of awards in the early aughts with films like Innocence and Something Like Happiness. But beyond co-starring with Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan in the 2016 Nazi assassination flick Anthropoid, she remains virtually unknown outside of her homeland.

That’s unfortunate, because based on her performance in Zuzana Kirchnerova’s tough and tender feature debut, Caravan, she’s a talent who deserves wider acclaim. As Ester, a single mother on a road trip in Italy with her disabled teenage son, David (David Vodstrcil), Geislerova channels love, despair, pain, sensuality and deep frustration. Desperate to remain close to her son, but also to live on her own terms, Ester grows increasingly aware of the fact that she may soon have to let David live his own life as well.

9/11 Led to the Fall of Ellen DeGeneres, According to Domino Effect Theory
Image
I don’t have strong opinions on Ellen DeGeneres — she was a fine comic, a subpar daytime host, probably a bully and one of the only Hollywood people to actually lose a job because of cancel culture. Really, she was great as Dory in Finding Nemo.

But as inconsequential as Ellen’s current whereabouts are to my life, the theory of how she got here is incredibly important. You see, it all starts with 9/11. Yes, that 9/11. The one in 2001, the one which permanently changed the trajectory of American public life, the definition of freedom, warmongering, human rights, airport security, and according to one beloved theory, Ellen DeGeneres’ career.

The Domino Effect theory on this issue — Ellen’s career, not 9/11, we don’t have time for that, we don’t have the maps for that — spans multiple decades, families and major motion picture blockbuster franchises. Circulating in the annals of the internet for years,...

Netflix’s Sirens Serves One Line So Iconic It Might’ve Dethroned Dakota Johnson
Image
When it comes to creating some of the most intriguing shows or films of all time, Netflix is the Picasso of it. From making One Piece live action that broke the adaptation curse to creating films that The Academy recognizes, the platform has something for everyone that goes beyond the audience’s expectations. One such series on the Ott platform is its recently released comedy series, Sirens.

The fairly new show has been a popular addition to the dark humor collection, featuring names like Julianne Moore and Meghann Fahy in the limelight. However, the series is making headlines because the melodrama made a cheeky dig at Dakota Johnson’s Fifty Shades films, and we all missed it.

Dakota Johnson’s 5 Best Performances Ranked (Photo Credit – Prime Video/Netflix)

Coming from a film background, Dakota Johnson has always been under the spotlight. However, when she made her debut in the industry at the age of 9 in 1999 in a small role alongside her mother, Melanie Griffith, in the lead role in the movie Crazy in Alabama, she didn’t go viral instantly.

In fact, she didn’t appear in any other projects until 2010. She slowly got the hang of how the industry works, and even took part in various projects, where she played small roles. Until she featured in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy alongside Jamie Dornan and broke the internet. Dakota got her biggest breakthrough with that and proved she has the quality to lead a movie.

But, now she is among one of the most seasoned actresses present in Hollywood. She is currently ruling the movie theatres with her latest project,...

Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal Absolutely Lose It Over Her Surprising ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Injury
Image
“Materialists” stars Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson have been delivering one charming interview after the next in the lead up to their new romance film’s debut. Naturally, Vogue had the bright idea to let the pair interview each other, and the result is about as enjoyable and entertaining as you would expect, especially when they got to talking about on-set injuries.

The duo is all laughs throughout the chat, but the hysterics truly broke out when Johnson asked the question “Have you ever had any accidents while filming?”

“Yes, I have. I’ve gotten hurt for real,” Pascal answered, leading Johnson to share her own story: “I got whiplash from ‘Fifty Shades,'” the actress replied through giggles, leading them both to absolutely lose it, dissolving into a fit of silent laughter, while Pascal got up from his chair to take a beat and compose himself.

This $1.3 Billion Franchise That Charlie Hunnam Passed on Leading With 11% on Rotten Tomatoes Is Now Streaming on Peacock
Image
Charlie Hunnam will always be known for his role as Jackson ‘Jax’ Teller in Sons of Anarchy, but many years ago, he also famously passed on a role in a major franchise that’s returned to streaming. Hunnam initially accepted the role of Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey movies, but he ended up dropping out and being replaced by Jamie Dornan, who starred opposite Dakota Johnson in the films. All three Fifty Shades movies recently hit Peacock at the start of this month, and they’re now available to watch for anyone with a standard subscription to the streamer. The Fifty Shades of Grey movies collectively earned over $1.3 billion at the global box office, but their earnings declined with each film after starting with $570 million and finishing with $372 million.

Although Hunnam ultimately didn’t end up starring in the Fifty Shades movies, he’s gone on to...

10 TV Shows to Watch if You Liked ‘Dept Q’ on Netflix
Image
Netflix’s Dept. Q, created by Scott Frank, is a riveting British crime drama adapted from Jussi Adler-Olsen’s bestselling book series. Centered around the brooding and emotionally scarred detective Carl Morck (played by Matthew Goode), the show follows a mismatched trio—Morck, the enigmatic Akram (Alexej Manvelov), and the sharp-witted Rose (Leah Byrne)—as they reopen long-forgotten cold cases from the dark corners of Scotland’s criminal archives. With tight pacing, haunting visuals, and emotionally complex characters, Dept. Q combines slow-burn procedural elements with layered psychological drama, making it one of Netflix’s most compelling crime thrillers of recent years. It has already drawn comparisons to shows like Mindhunter and Broadchurch, thanks to its cerebral tone and richly textured storytelling.

It started with an iconic reference to an equally iconic picture from pop culture history. For the release of lead single “Relationships,” Haim recreated the 2001 candid of Nicole Kidman walking down a nondescript Hollywood street, basking in the L.

MK2 Films’ Nathanael Karmitz, Fionnuala Jamison on Premiering Record Six Movies in Competition, Championing Female Talent and Ramping Up Production
Image
Having turned 50 last year, the French film studio and arthouse cinema chain MK2 is far from a midlife crisis. The family-run company, which was founded by Marin Karmitz in 1974 and is now presided over by Nathanael and Elisha Karmitz, has never been more in the game. MK2 Films, whose international sales division is headed by Irish-born executive Fionnuala Jamison, rolled into Cannes with six films in competition and 12 in total across the Official Selection, likely more than any other sales outfits.

The company, which has always championed female auteurs, has been turning the spotlight on a new generation of daring female directors, from Celine Sciamma to Noemie Merlant, Justine Triet and Mati Diop. And at this year’s Cannes, they have three out of the seven competition films directed by female directors, Hafsia Herzi’s drama “La petite dernière,” Carla Simon’s “Romeria” and Mascha Schilinski’s “Sound of Falling” which has been unanimously praised.

The soundtrack that outshined its source material

‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘Fifty Shades,’ and ‘Fear’ Director James Foley Dead at 71
Image
Acclaimed director James Foley has died at age 71. A representative for the Foley family confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the filmmaker passed “peacefully in his sleep earlier this week following a years-long struggle with brain cancer.” It is unclear when Foley was diagnosed and for how long his illness was.

Foley most famously helmed the 1992 film adaptation of David Mamet’s “Glengarry Glen Ross,” starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, and Kevin Spacey. Foley would later reunite with Spacey for 12 episodes of Netflix’s first-ever series, “House of Cards.”

Foley made his feature directorial debut in 1984 with “Reckless” starring Daryl Hannah and Aidan Quinn. He was best known for working in the domestic thriller genre, despite defying filmmaker labels. His features include directing Mark Wahlberg and Reese Witherspoon in “Fear,” Halle Berry and Bruce Willis in “Perfect Stranger,” and “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed...

James Foley, Director of ‘Glengarry Glen Ross,’ ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Fifty Shades,’ Dies at 71
Image
James Foley, the Brooklyn-born filmmaker who collaborated with A-list stars like Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Madonna and Mark Wahlberg across a 30-plus-year career in film, TV and music videos, has died. He was 71.

Foley’s rep said Thursday he died “peacefully in his sleep earlier this week following a yearslong struggle with brain cancer.”

Born on Dec. 28, 1953, and raised in New York, Foley graduated from high school and went on to study film at New York University followed by USC in Los Angeles. It was during his final year of film school that a chance meeting would change the course of his life and jump start his career behind the camera.

“I was very lucky, and in the perverse calculus of Hollywood I was in the last year of film school and shared a house with a guy. There was a woman who was pursuing my friend so we had this film school party,...

Charlie Cox Jokingly Told Jamie Dornan He’s “Too Good-Looking” for Hollywood Early in Career
Image
In Charlie Cox’s eyes, Jamie Dornan was just too handsome for Hollywood.

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Daredevil: Born Again actor opened up about his pre-fame friend group, which included himself, Dornan, Eddie Redmayne, Andrew Garfield and Robert Pattinson, and their early days in Los Angeles.

“I have an amazing photo on my computer of us on the beach at Venice, all unemployed, all broke, waiting for the next audition,” he said. “Basically waiting for someone to tell us we were talentless so we could just go home and let go of this stupid dream.”

However, to no surprise, no one ever told them that, as they’ve all built successful acting careers. But in the early days, Cox recalled the group auditioning for the same roles.

“We’d all put each other on tape, and help each other,” he recounted, “and then be like,...

Anthony Mackie Teases New Project With Chilly Set Video, Is it Avengers: Doomsday?
Image
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster, Avengers: Doomsday, ramps up production, one of its actors shares a chilly behind-the-scenes video, potentially from the set. Star Anthony Mackie releases a cold-weather clip on location for his new project.

On his Instagram Stories, Mackie posted a video of himself filming an unspecified project in a snowy setting. Perhaps ruing that he's a far cry away from spring, Mackie wishes fans a "warm, beautiful sunny day" while looking at the snow falling. Some fans are speculating that this is hinting at Mackie's MCU character, Sam Wilson, heading to a cold location in Doomsday. Notably, Mackie did not state where he was or which project he was working on when posting the video.

Skydance Pauses New Spending On Jeremy Strong 9/11 First Responders Drama Series Amid Uncertainty Over Paramount Merger Approval
Image
Exclusive: We may have the first casualty of the prolonged — and unpredictable — regulatory approval process of Skydance’s proposed $8 billion Paramount takeover. Skydance is pausing new spending on a high-profile drama series starring and executive produced by Jeremy Strong and written and executive produced by Tobias Lindholm, sources tell Deadline.

Tentatively titled 9/12, the series, which was originally set up at Sister in 2021 as The Best Of Us before moving to Skydance late last year, tells the story of the first responders of 9/11, relying on heavily researched accounts, and pays tribute to those impacted.

It is the first and only so far Skydance production budgeted against the new Skydance-Paramount deal; it had been moving ahead for a targeted August filming kickoff. That tentative start of production timeline remains in place for now but Skydance executives have informed the series’ creative team that new spending is being put on hold as of today,...

Hungary’s Legislation Targeting LGBTQ+ Community Leaves Hollywood Film & TV Productions In Limbo
Image
Several years ago, Hollywood took a stand against North Carolina’s controversial “bathroom bill” Hb 2 and its successor Hb 142 targeting transgender people by pulling production out of the state, including the high-profile decision by Netflix to move what became one of its biggest YA hits, Outer Banks, to South Carolina.

Film and TV studios are now facing a similar moral dilemma with Hungary, a country that has become a leading European filming location. Two of this year’s Best Picture nominees, Dune: Part Two and The Brutalist, were shot there.

Fast-tracked anti-lgbtq legislation last month that banned LGBTQ+ public gatherings — including the annual Budapest Pride — and sparked street protests, was codified this week with a constitutional amendment. It passed overwhelmingly at the Hungarian parliament, which is controlled by a coalition led by populist Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

This is the latest in a string of moves targeting the LGBTQ community...

Yep, Jamie Dornan was glad to not have landed the same role that eventually turned him into an international heartthrob almost never came his way, and he wasn’t exactly crushed when it slipped through his fingers the first time.

In a throwback chat with GQ, Dornan revealed that Charlie Hunnam actually beat him to the punch. “I was beaten to it the first time by Charlie Hunnam and I felt a certain amount of relief when he got it, to be honest,” Dornan admitted. “I thought, ‘This would have been fun, but it would have been a strange ride. Better not to be on that ride.’” A bold take, considering the franchise’s global success, but totally understandable if you consider the wild fandom and critical firestorm the films stirred up.

Back in 2013, Hunnam,...
