Jake Gyllenhaal Joins Joaquin Phoenix in ‘The Sisters Brothers,’ Oscar Isaac Will Run ‘The Garbo Network’ & More
With four films likely premiering (or already set for a release) this year, Jake Gyllenhaal has now found his next role. The Enemy star is set to join Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly for The Sisters Brothers, according to Variety. The latest film from Palme d’Or-winner Jacques Audiard (Dheepan, A Prophet, Rust and Bone), the neo-noir western is an adaptation of the novel by the same name from Patrick DeWitt, which centers on two brothers (Riley and Phoenix) who are hired to kill a man. This will be Audiard’s first full English-language film and as for Gyllenhaal, following last fall’s Nocturnal Animals, he’ll have Life, Stronger, Wildlife, and Okja all arriving this year.

Meanwhile, another top Hollywood star, Oscar Isaac, has joined the cast of a new World War II thriller titled The Garbo Network. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the espionage tale penned by...

21:30We're filling some time while the voting takes place, so here's another look back at the series. Have you enjoyed it?

21:28Well, we don't really know what to say about Michael Flatley. It was all very energetic and we do kind of want one of his dancers' sparkly tops, mind. He promises that it really was his last TV performance: "I'm a bit long in the tooth now."

21:25(This is all we can think...

Waiting for the Whole Sky All Diamonds
The first-ever manufacturer of light bulbs in Portugal, Manoel de Oliveira’s father died in 1932, nine years after Raul Brandão wrote a play called Gebo and the Shadow. In the year 2012 Oliveira turned the play into a film, making a grimy, dim oil lamp its legitimate character: elderly accountant Gebo burns the midnight oil in it as he plods away at his books. In an early scene, meanwhile, his wife lights the lanterns outside their house with a match. No one seems yet to have heard of electricity; the time setting is unclear; presumably, it’s the turn of the century.

Presumably. Oliveira’s Benilde, or The Virgin Mother (1975) opens with a title-card of this word to gradually lure us into a province of utter chronological disorder. This very same word has ever since been unchallenged as the most accurate description of the bizarre, atemporal effect that grows stronger in each subsequent Oliveira film.

Hurricane Isaac caused the Lynyrd Skynard concert at the convention to be canceled. And then rumors circulated that he'd paid Journey $500,000 to perform. It wasn't him, it was actually a private group, Liberty Plaza, that hired Journey.

Nominations for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards
The Screen Actors Guild has announced their list of nominations for the best performances of 2011. I have to point out that I'm surprised Tom Hardy and Joel Edgarton weren't nominated for their roles in Warrior, because they were pretty damn awesome in that film. I think they deserved a nom more than Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm a huge fan of DiCaprio but his performance in J. Edgar wasn't his best. Brad Pitt will end up taking home the award for Moneyball though. It was great to see Bridesmaids and The Help get a nomination for best ensemble cast. It will be interesting to see who takes home the award on this list, and how many of them will make their way to the Oscars.

Who would you like to see take home the award?

Here's the full press released with the list of Nominations:

Game Of Thrones: Season 2: Lisa Nolan quits over Nudity
Lisa Nolan Game of Thrones Season 2 quits over nudity. Lisa Nolan of Game of Thrones: Season 2 nudity quit surprised many, including probably show writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. “Model turned actress Lisa Nolan has abruptly quit her role as a King’s mistress after being asked to bare all for a sex scene in HBO’s dark fantasy Emmy nominated series, returning in early 2012.” Game of Thrones: Season 1 was chalk full of nudity in varying degrees, especially with the women of the HBO show. Emilia Clarke (pictured here: Game of Thrones: Season 1, Episode 2: The Kingsroad Photos), Esmé Bianco (pictured here: Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming: High Resolution Photos), Kate Dickie, and Emily Diamond (pictured here: TV Review/Photos: Game of Thrones: Season 1, Episode 5: The Wolf and the Lion) can all attest to that.

Lisa Nolan had to know what was required of her,...

Jonathan Levine to Direct Warm Bodies aka “Twilight Meets Shaun of the Dead”
Zombies, zombies, and more zombies... studio execs in Hollywood seem only to have eyes for the undead as of late. Isaac Marion [1] is the latest writer to stumble into fame after coming up with another minor variation on the zombie theme. After self-publishing his book Warm Bodies and selling it online, it was picked up for publication this year by Atria Books, a division of Simon and Schuster. Now his book is also being turned into a movie by Summit Entertainment with writer/director Jonathan Levine (The Wackness, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane) on board to adapt it. Described as Twilight meets Shaun of the Dead, the story follows a zombie named "R" who falls in love with the human girlfriend of one of his victims. It supposedly has a bit of a Romeo & Juliet vibe to it, and brings to mind two other recently optioned rom-zom-coms: Breathers: A...

Remains of the Day: Machete, Little Red Riding Hood and Roth's Nation's Pride
  • At the Movies just got re-inserted into my television line-up: the return of A.O. Scott on At the Movies begins September 5th. Here is a mash-up of eight and 1/2 news items that we didn't have enough time to cover but are worth mentioning here for August 5th... 1. Down with the Bone The Lovely Bones trailer is up. Verdict: Could be worse. 2. Filmically Inclined 2009 MTV Music Video Awards noms worth mentioning: Johan Renck, Ray Tintori, Vern Moen, Chris Milk, Rciahrd Ayoade, Adria Petty, Taylor Cohen & Otto Arsenault, Walter Robot, Humble and Ferry Gouw. Check out coverage by The Playlist. 3. Film within a Film I'm not a fan of Inglourious Basterds, but Eli Roth's "Nation's Pride" faux trailer is the best thing in the marketing of Qt's film so far. 4. Casting is Sliced Up Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey join Machete.
