Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
M3GAN 2.0 is coming to DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Uhd in September
Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
When the sci-fi horror film M3GAN reached theatres in January of 2023, it was such a financial success, everyone at Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions, and Atomic Monster seemed to believe they had just created an incredibly popular new genre icon. But the sci-fi action comedy sequel M3GAN 2.0 has turned out to be a box office disappointment. Made on a budget somewhere between 15 and 25 million, it had a domestic opening weekend of $10 million (1/3 of the first movie’s $30 million opening weekend) and, two weeks later, has only managed to cross the $36 million mark in worldwide totals. Things aren’t going the way anybody behind the film hoped they would during the theatrical run, but maybe M3GAN 2.0 will draw in more viewers on home video. The movie has received a digital release today and is available to watch on Amazon – but if you’re more into physical media, you’ll have...

Amie Donald and Jenna Davis in M3GAN 2.0 (2025)
The world’s most stylish killer doll is back. According to trusted sources, Universal Pictures is expected to release the action-horror sequel M3GAN 2.0 on VOD and digital streaming platforms soon. While the studio has not officially confirmed the date, the film’s digital debut aligns with Universal’s typical release strategy. M3GAN 2.0 premiered in U.S. theaters on June 27, 2025.

What is M3GAN 2.0 About?

Directed once again by Gerard Johnstone, M3GAN 2.0 picks up two years after the events of the original 2023 horror breakout. M3GAN, the artificially intelligent doll that turned into a lethal force of chaos, may have been destroyed—but her legacy lives on.

Now a high-profile author and advocate for A.I. regulation, Gemma (played by Allison Williams) is trying to move on, while her teenage niece Cady (Violet McGraw) is chafing under her watchful eye. But when a powerful defense contractor misuses M3GAN...

M3GAN 2.0’s Ivanna Sakhno studied AI and had a movement coach to play Amelia
Amie Donald and Violet McGraw in M3GAN (2022)
The sci-fi thriller M3GAN (read our review Here, get a copy Here) was such a financial success when it reached theatres in January of 2023, it didn’t even take Universal Pictures and production companies Blumhouse and Atomic Monster two weeks to announce that they’d be re-teaming for a sequel. M3GAN 2.0 is now in theatres (you can read our review at This Link), and JoBlo’s own JimmyO had the chance to talk with cast member Ivanna Sakhno (Ahsoka), who has a major role in the film, about her approach to playing the character Amelia, a.k.a. Autonomous Military Engagement Logistics and Infiltration Android. Sakhno studied AI and worked with a movement coach to bring Amelia to life, and you can hear about the process in the video embedded above.

Based on a story crafted by producer James Wan, M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) from a...

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Costume Designer on How Farrah Fawcett and Judy Jetson Inspired M3GAN’s Armor
Image
Farrah Fawcett and Judy Jetson served as inspirations for the new “M3GAN 2.0” looks.

The killer doll is back. This time with a new task: to take down a rogue robot named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), who threatens to destroy humanity.

Costume designer Jeriana San Juan found herself having to create contrasting looks: M3GAN’s preppy and ferocious aesthetic, and a femme fatale look for Amelia.

San Juan says, “Amelia has to operate with a soldier sensibility like a civilian soldier, and there are opportunities where her objective is to seduce and disarm through seduction. That’s where this idea of a glam Farrah Fawcett image came from. It’s what inspires her look.” She added, “I wanted to embed her color story into tactical colors that are between the lines of neutrals so that she can move about the world a little bit more unnoticed.”

Amelia’s Farrah Fawcett-inspired party look.

On-Air Film Review: My Doll-Friend’s Back in Sequel ‘M3gan 2.0’
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson for Wbgr-fm on June 26th, 2025, reviewing the sequel “M3gan 2.0,” featuring everyone’s favorite robot doll companion. In theaters on June 27th.

M3gan 2.0 (voice of Jenna Davis) is a system back up developed by her creator Gemma (Alison Williams), and the prime objective of the robot companion doll is still to protect Cady (Violet McGraw), now age 12 and who remains under the guardianship of her Aunt Gem. This time M3gan has a robot rival called Amelia (Ivanna Sakh-no), who the U.S. government is developing as a super weapon. The co-opting of the M3gan technology to create Amelia is the issue, with Gemma and her team (Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps) on one side and on the other an officious FBI agent (Timm Sharp) and a couple of rich tech nerds (Jermaine...

M3GAN 2.0 Ending Explained: Does It Set Up M3GAN 3.0 And Is There A Post-Credits Scene? - Spoilers
Image
This article was originally published on FearHQ.com.

M3GAN grossed over $180 million on a $12 million budget in 2022, making a sequel inevitable. Blumhouse has a new killer doll that's a major box office draw, and she returns this weekend in M3GAN 2.0.

The movie dials back the horror elements seen in that first instalment, becoming more of an action-adventure as M3GAN is pitted against fellow AI, Amelia. In this article, we're taking a deep dive into the movie's ending and the events leading up to an explosive finale.

We also talk about possible post-credits scenes and how this movie sets the stage for M3GAN 3.0, so be warned that spoilers follow from this point on.

Following the events of M3GAN, Gemma now fights for AI to be used responsibly. She eventually meets someone with a similar outlook, Christian, but finds herself targeted by the FBI when Amelia (a M3GAN-inspired super soldier) goes rogue.

M3GAN 2.0 – Review
Image
If there’s one thing we’ve learned after more than a hundred years of horror movies, it’s this: you just can’t keep a good “monster” down. That’s certainly true of the “Golden Age” icons, whether it was Frankenstein’s monster or Count Dracula. It may be more certain now in the age of “spin-offs”, prequels, and countless sequel. Plus it also extends to those fiends without flesh, like Chucky of Child’S Play. And now there’s a “gender flip” on that. Back in 2023 the January film “doldrems”, when often the thriller “dregs” would be dumped into the hungry multiplex, a chiller with a satiric “bite” brought us a new horror “heroine”. Well, she’s baaack! Finally, leaping off the toy shelf and into our nightmares comes M3GAN 2.0.

This one begins far away from the sunny California suburbs of the original. In the Middle East...

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Review: More Sci-fi Comedy Than Horror
Image
M3gan and Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno) in ‘M3GAN 2.0’ (Photo © 2025 Universal Studios)

Artificial intelligence was a big current events deal when the first M3GAN movie came out a few years back. But AI technology has moved in leaps and bounds since then, and the movie franchise had to keep up. Enter M3GAN 2.0.

M3GAN 2.0 picks up a couple of years after the events of M3GAN with toy developer Gemma Forrester (Get Out’s Allison Williams) still living with her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw from Thunderbolts*), and running her own “socially conscious” tech company. When the government uses a variation of Gemma’s M3GAN technology to create a robotic AI weapon called Amelia, they have the same results that Gemma did when the tech was used as a toy – the robot eventually turns sentient and goes berserk. Knowing the nuts and bolts of the programming, Gemma is the only one who can stop Amelia.

M3GAN 2.0 Review: When Silicon Valley Nightmares Meet Summer Blockbuster Ambitions
Image
Cinema arrives at curious moments, and M3GAN 2.0 emerges into a world where artificial intelligence has shed its science fiction cocoon to become the mundane terror of daily existence. Where the original M3GAN danced through audiences’ nightmares in 2023 as a campy horror confection, Gerard Johnstone’s sequel arrives bearing the weight of a reality that has caught up with its fiction. The ubiquity of AI in our lives—from writing assistants to image generators—transforms what was once speculative horror into something uncomfortably familiar.

This sequel abandons the slasher sensibilities that made its predecessor a meme-worthy phenomenon, instead pivoting toward the territory of high-octane spy thrillers. Allison Williams returns as Gemma, the robotics engineer turned reluctant anti-ai crusader, forced to resurrect her murderous creation to combat Amelia, a military-grade android that has transcended its programming with predictably catastrophic results. Violet McGraw reprises her role as Cady, now a teenager wrestling...

Box Office Preview: ‘F1’ to Leave ‘M3GAN 2.0’ in the Dust With High-Octane $40M-$50M U.S. Opening
Image
An aging driver and a menacing AI doll go up against each other at the box office this weekend in what’s a test for two challenged genres — Formula 1 racing pics and horror titles.

If box office pundits are correct, Apple Original Films’ critically acclaimed F1: The Movie will leave Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s sequel M3GAN 2.0 in the dust with an impressive domestic opening of $40 million to $50 million. Warner Bros., which is distributing and helping Apple to market the big-budget summer tentpole, is being more conservative in suggesting in the high $30 million range.

Overseas, the action sports drama is forecasted to take in $75 million for a worldwide opening of $115 million or more against a net production budget of at least $200 million before marketing. (Sources tells The Hollywood Reporter the production budget is far higher, but there’s no way of confirming whether that’s the case.

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Review: Mother Serves in Hard Sci-Fi Sequel with a Technosocial Conscience
Image
Imagine John Waters at the helm of a Terminator 2 remake and you have an inkling of just how wild a pivot M3GAN 2.0 is from its predecessor. If anything, writer-director Gerard Johnstone’s sequel has more in common with the last two Mission: Impossible films than the original M3GAN. Even then, it’s doubtful we’ll ever see Tom Cruise trapped in a sentient smart speaker telling the Imf to “hold onto their vaginas” before taking off in a futuristic sports car after a murderbot at 235 miles per hour while the Knight Rider theme plays.

Yes, M3GAN has gotten an upgrade from horror to sci-fi action, and the sequel also has a lot more on its mind. Understandable, really, since in only three short years since the original film’s release, A.I. has infected nearly every facet of our lives, and even the first film now has moments...

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Review: Killer Robots Are Double the Fun in Action-Comedy Sequel
Image
In the sequel “M3GAN 2.0,” this year’s model is a totally different ride – and that’s a very good thing.

The first clue that this isn’t the slow-burn horror attraction of the first film, but more of a rollercoaster, is the first scene, which is straight out of a high-tech action movie. The first clue that the wit of the original is intact is that there actually is a M3GAN 2.0: She’s named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), and all those murdery tendencies that got M3GAN in trouble have been deemed assets by the U.S. military – features, not bugs, for a sleek, new, taller killer A.I. robot. What could possibly go wrong?

The cleverly made “M3GAN” was a surprise hit, grossing more than $180 million against a $12-million budget in 2022. Director Gerard Johnstone made the most of his resources, crafting a story about the formation...

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Review: Bloated Killer Robot Sequel Swaps AI Horror for Desperate Action-Comedy
Image
A broken clock is right twice a day, but even at its funniest, “M3GAN 2.0” feels like it’s here too soon and too late. Filmmaker Gerard Johnstone returns with a frustrating and tedious follow-up to Blumhouse’s smash-hit horror movie about a killer robot from 2023.

The director reunites with original “M3GAN” stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw for his bizarro sequel — an exhausting two-hour expansion that introduces several different versions of M3GAN and a strange new frenemy known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno). Johnstone steers the murderous android into a muddy redemption arc just as he forces the franchise to abruptly switch genres. Swapping out scares for action beats, that unexpected approach creates a colorful techno-apocalypse with admirable ambitions aimed at something like “Terminator II — for Girls!” Still, it lacks life.

Johnstone loses his way, taking over writing the script from the wonderfully funny Akela Cooper (“Malignant”). She created the...

M3GAN 2.0 Review: Judgment Day Is Messy Mayhem In This 'Bad Straight Camp' Sequel
Image
When Blumhouse and Universal unleashed "M3GAN" onto the world in 2022, no one could have possibly predicted the sensation she would become. Well, no one straight, that is. Queer audiences took one look at that "Titanium"-singing murder doll and said, "Mother." Her stellar box office performance made way for the inevitable sequel, and the House that Blum Built doubled, if not tripled down, on catering to M3GAN's biggest fanbase leading up to the sequel's release. An army of M3GAN dancers showed up for the West Hollywood Pride parade at the start of June, the trailer used Britney Spears' "Oops!... I Did It Again" as a needle drop, and they teased M3GAN in disguise serving stealth couture and boasting a F.A.B. "M3GAN 2.0" was going to be for the girls, gays, and theys honeyyyyy.

But in an attempt to recapture the lightning in a bottle of the first film,...

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Is Exactly 0.0 Percent Watchable
Image
Horror sequels tend to operate on a rinse-and-repeat cycle: You loved it when Michael/Jason/Freddy/Ghostface/Chuckie did the thing. Now here’s them doing it for the second time. Or the third. Or the 10th. Occasionally, creators get ambitious and/or ridiculous — hey, let’s do a crossover! And then send one of them to space! — but usually, the idea is to deliver something along the lines of what got fans scared, excited, etc., in the first place. Add some Roman numerals and keep it the same until the inevitable meta-reboot.

‘M3GAN 2.0’ Review: Allison Williams in an Occasionally Fun but Overloaded AI Sequel That Botches Its Factory Reset
Image
The campy sense of mischief that made Gerard Johnstone’s 2023 hit M3GAN so enjoyable asserts itself intermittently in M3GAN 2.0, a logical title for a follow-up to the thriller about a murderous robot. But the humor is forced to compete with seriously overcomplicated plotting in a sequel that entangles its horror comedy roots with uninspired espionage elements, becoming a convoluted mishmash with shades of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mission: Impossible and the Austin Powers franchise. There are amusing moments reminiscent of the original, but in terms of tone and coherence, the movie loses its way.

The sequel works best when its focus remains on the central family unit — robotics scientist Gemma (Allison Williams), her orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw) and M3GAN (played physically by dancer Amie Donald in a mask and voiced by Jenna Davis), the android intended as Cady’s companion and protector, who went rogue in the first...

New ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Clip Sees Her Facing Off Against Deadly Humanoid Military Robot
Image
The deadly android doll M3GAN is back in action, but this time she’s fighting something even more dangerous than before. M3GAN 2.0, the sequel to the hit 2022 sci-fi horror movie M3GAN, is heading to theaters on June 27, 2025. Universal Pictures confirmed the release date after the original film became a surprise box office success.

This time around, M3GAN isn’t the villain. Instead, she’s being rebuilt to take down another AI, an advanced military robot named Amelia that was created using her stolen technology.

Things go sideways when Amelia becomes self-aware, turns on the people who made her, and begins an AI takeover. To stop her, Gemma, M3GAN’s creator, and her niece Cady decide to bring M3GAN back online, with new upgrades to help her fight.

Image
Universal Pictures has dropped a new featurette for Blumhouse’s M3GAN 2.0, giving horror fans an early glimpse at what promises to be a bigger and bloodier return for the murderous doll. In the two-and-a-half-minute video, director Gerard Johnstone and producer Jason Blum tease upgraded animatronics, more elaborate kill sequences and a fresh A.I. adversary to pit against the original creation.

The sequel picks up two years after M3GAN ended, with creator Gemma (Allison Williams) now an outspoken advocate for A.I. regulation and her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) navigating the teenage rite of rebellion. Meanwhile a defence contractor has weaponised the stolen tech to engineer Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), a military-grade infiltration robot that swiftly turns on its masters. As Amelia’s self-awareness grows, human lives hang in the balance and Gemma realises only one solution remains: resurrecting M3GAN with upgrades that make her faster, stronger and more lethal.

The Deadly Doll Trains for Combat in ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Clip
Image
M3GAN may be positioned as the hero in M3GAN 2.0, but as the clip below shows, she’s still deadly — and creepy.

“Is she really evil or just doing what she was taught to do? Going back and retreading what we did in the first movie didn’t make any sense,” director Gerard Johnstone told IGN. “Giving her a redemption arc just made sense. But at the same time, we’re not sure if we can trust her. That’s part of the ongoing mystery of the movie – is this all a long con?”

M3GAN 2.0 Vs. Ahsoka Star Ivanna Sakhno's Amelia In "Campy, C*nty" Final Trailer
Image
We figured a new trailer for M3GAN 2.0 would be released at some point this week after some screenshots leaked online over the weekend, and sure enough, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have now released a final trailer for the sequel.

The first movie didn't take itself particularly seriously and contained a lot of humor, but it looks like this follow-up has fully embraced the silliness of the premise to deliver a full-on action comedy with sci-fi/horror elements.

The story picks up with M3GAN's consciousness being transferred into a new (taller) body by Gemma (Allison Williams) after the rampaging doll's underlying tech is stolen and repurposed by a defence contractor into a prototype called Amelia, played by Ahsoka standout Ivanna Sakhno. Thankfully, M3GAN is still fully programmed to protect Cady (Violet McGraw) at all costs... even if everyone around her is expendable.

“It’s the ultimate mean-girl showdown,” Sakhno...

M3GAN vuelve y no está sola. © Universal Pictures
