Taller, stronger, faster and now unrated, M3GAN 2.0 will be released on Digital tomorrow, July 15 — a mere 18 days after opening in theaters.

The sequel will launch on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on September 23 via Universal. A limited edition SteelBook 4K Uhd will also be available.

The world’s most stylish killer doll is back. According to trusted sources, Universal Pictures is expected to release the action-horror sequel M3GAN 2.0 on VOD and digital streaming platforms soon. The killer doll is back. This time with a new task: to take down a rogue robot named Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), who threatens to destroy humanity.

Costume designer Jeriana San Juan found herself having to create contrasting looks: M3GAN’s preppy and ferocious aesthetic, and a femme fatale look for Amelia.

San Juan says, “Amelia has to operate with a soldier sensibility like a civilian soldier, and there are opportunities where her objective is to seduce and disarm through seduction. That’s where this idea of a glam Farrah Fawcett image came from. It’s what inspires her look.” She added, “I wanted to embed her color story into tactical colors that are between the lines of neutrals so that she can move about the world a little bit more unnoticed.”

Composed by Chris Bacon, the score is pressed 2xLP translucent pink and white colored vinyl with purple splatter.

Priced at $40, it’s scheduled to ship in August.

The movie dials back the horror elements seen in that first instalment, becoming more of an action-adventure as M3GAN is pitted against fellow AI, Amelia. In this article, we're taking a deep dive into the movie's ending and the events leading up to an explosive finale.

M3GAN 2.0 picks up a couple of years after the events of M3GAN with toy developer Gemma Forrester (Get Out’s Allison Williams) still living with her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw from Thunderbolts*), and running her own “socially conscious” tech company. When the government uses a variation of Gemma’s M3GAN technology to create a robotic AI weapon called Amelia, they have the same results that Gemma did when the tech was used as a toy – the robot eventually turns sentient and goes berserk. Knowing the nuts and bolts of the programming, Gemma is the only one who can stop Amelia.

Cinema arrives at curious moments, and M3GAN 2.0 emerges into a world where artificial intelligence has shed its science fiction cocoon to become the mundane terror of daily existence. Where the original M3GAN danced through audiences’ nightmares in 2023 as a campy horror confection, Gerard Johnstone’s sequel arrives bearing the weight of a reality that has caught up with its fiction. The ubiquity of AI in our lives—from writing assistants to image generators—transforms what was once speculative horror into something uncomfortably familiar.

This sequel abandons the slasher sensibilities that made its predecessor a meme-worthy phenomenon, instead pivoting toward the territory of high-octane spy thrillers. Allison Williams returns as Gemma, the robotics engineer turned reluctant anti-ai crusader, forced to resurrect her murderous creation to combat Amelia, a military-grade android that has transcended its programming with predictably catastrophic results. An aging driver and a menacing AI doll go up against each other at the box office this weekend in what’s a test for two challenged genres — Formula 1 racing pics and horror titles.

If box office pundits are correct, Apple Original Films’ critically acclaimed F1: The Movie will leave Blumhouse and Atomic Monster’s sequel M3GAN 2.0 in the dust with an impressive domestic opening of $40 million to $50 million. Warner Bros., which is distributing and helping Apple to market the big-budget summer tentpole, is being more conservative in suggesting in the high $30 million range.

Overseas, the action sports drama is forecasted to take in $75 million for a worldwide opening of $115 million or more against a net production budget of at least $200 million before marketing. (Sources tells The Hollywood Reporter the production budget is far higher, but there’s no way of confirming whether that’s the case.

Imagine John Waters at the helm of a Terminator 2 remake and you have an inkling of just how wild a pivot M3GAN 2.0 is from its predecessor. If anything, writer-director Gerard Johnstone’s sequel has more in common with the last two Mission: Impossible films than the original M3GAN. Even then, it’s doubtful we’ll ever see Tom Cruise trapped in a sentient smart speaker telling the Imf to “hold onto their vaginas” before taking off in a futuristic sports car after a murderbot at 235 miles per hour while the Knight Rider theme plays.

Yes, M3GAN has gotten an upgrade from horror to sci-fi action, and the sequel also has a lot more on its mind. Understandable, really, since in only three short years since the original film’s release, A.I. has infected nearly every facet of our lives, and even the first film now has moments...

The first clue that this isn’t the slow-burn horror attraction of the first film, but more of a rollercoaster, is the first scene, which is straight out of a high-tech action movie. The director reunites with original “M3GAN” stars Allison Williams and Violet McGraw for his bizarro sequel — an exhausting two-hour expansion that introduces several different versions of M3GAN and a strange new frenemy known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno). Johnstone steers the murderous android into a muddy redemption arc just as he forces the franchise to abruptly switch genres. Swapping out scares for action beats, that unexpected approach creates a colorful techno-apocalypse with admirable ambitions aimed at something like “Terminator II — for Girls!” Still, it lacks life.

When Blumhouse and Universal unleashed "M3GAN" onto the world in 2022, no one could have possibly predicted the sensation she would become. Well, no one straight, that is. Queer audiences took one look at that "Titanium"-singing murder doll and said, "Mother." Her stellar box office performance made way for the inevitable sequel, and the House that Blum Built doubled, if not tripled down, on catering to M3GAN's biggest fanbase leading up to the sequel's release. An army of M3GAN dancers showed up for the West Hollywood Pride parade at the start of June, the trailer used Britney Spears' "Oops!... I Did It Again" as a needle drop, and they teased M3GAN in disguise serving stealth couture and boasting a F.A.B. "M3GAN 2.0" was going to be for the girls, gays, and theys honeyyyyy.

But in an attempt to recapture the lightning in a bottle of the first film,...

Horror sequels tend to operate on a rinse-and-repeat cycle: You loved it when Michael/Jason/Freddy/Ghostface/Chuckie did the thing. Now here’s them doing it for the second time. Or the third. Or the 10th. Occasionally, creators get ambitious and/or ridiculous — hey, let’s do a crossover! And then send one of them to space! — but usually, the idea is to deliver something along the lines of what got fans scared, excited, etc., in the first place. Add some Roman numerals and keep it the same until the inevitable meta-reboot.

The campy sense of mischief that made Gerard Johnstone’s 2023 hit M3GAN so enjoyable asserts itself intermittently in M3GAN 2.0, a logical title for a follow-up to the thriller about a murderous robot. But the humor is forced to compete with seriously overcomplicated plotting in a sequel that entangles its horror comedy roots with uninspired espionage elements, becoming a convoluted mishmash with shades of Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Mission: Impossible and the Austin Powers franchise. There are amusing moments reminiscent of the original, but in terms of tone and coherence, the movie loses its way.

“Is she really evil or just doing what she was taught to do? Going back and retreading what we did in the first movie didn’t make any sense,” director Gerard Johnstone told IGN. “Giving her a redemption arc just made sense. But at the same time, we’re not sure if we can trust her. That’s part of the ongoing mystery of the movie – is this all a long con?”

We figured a new trailer for M3GAN 2.0 would be released at some point this week after some screenshots leaked online over the weekend, and sure enough, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have now released a final trailer for the sequel.

The first movie didn't take itself particularly seriously and contained a lot of humor, but it looks like this follow-up has fully embraced the silliness of the premise to deliver a full-on action comedy with sci-fi/horror elements.
