In accepting the Life Achievement Award at the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 23, actress and activist Jane Fonda will be cementing a legacy that surpasses even her own father’s, screen legend Henry Fonda. It’s a well-deserved honor for a talent who has continued to reshape herself over the course of her more than six-decade career, but in regards to the reshaping of some of her most famous work, Fonda remains skeptical.
When asked how she felt about the current remakes underway for “Barbarella” and “9 to 5” during a recent interview with Vogue, Fonda simply responded, “Good luck.” Despite talent like Edgar Wright and Sydney Sweeney working on the former and Jennifer Aniston and Diablo Cody piecing together the latter, Fonda knows the difficulties of striking gold twice.

Jane Fonda is addressing the Barbarella and 9 To 5 remakes that are currently in the works.
Back in 2022, it was announced that Sydney Sweeney will be starring in a retelling of Barbarella, which Jane, now 87, starred in back in 1968. Then last year, it was revealed that Jennifer Aniston and Diablo Cody are working on a remake of the 1980 movie 9 to 5, which Jane starred in alongside Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton.
In a new interview, Jane was asked about the two remakes, and she had a very blunt response.
Keep reading to find out more…Vogue‘s journalist asked Jane, “Edgar Wright recently signed on to direct a remake of Barbarella starring Sydney Sweeney, and Jennifer Aniston is developing a remake of 9 to 5 with Diablo Cody. What are your thoughts on some of your iconic films being reinterpreted?”

Jennifer’s Body and Lisa Frankenstein scribe Diablo Cody is set to produce the feature directorial debut Forbidden Fruits by Meredith Alloway, Deadline reports today.
The film is an adaptation of playwright Lily Houghton’s stageplay Of the Women Came the Beginning of Sin and Through Her We All Die. Alloway and Houghton are co-adapting.
Forbidden Fruits follows “Free Eden employee Apple, who secretly runs a witchy femme cult in the basement of the mall store after hours – with fellow fruits Cherry and Fig. But when new hire Pumpkin challenges their ‘girl boss’ ways, the women are forced to face their own poisons or succumb to a bloody fate.”
In other words, expect a tale of retail and magick.
“Forbidden Fruits grabbed me by the neck the very first time I read it,” Cody told Deadline. “It’s one of the craziest, most creative, beautifully bonkers projects I’ve ever worked on.

As rom-coms have a resurgence in Hollywood, the anti-rom-com is on its way. Cue the ingenuous “I Love You Forever,” which IndieWire can announce has been acquired by Utopia for theatrical distribution after having premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival.
It’s almost shocking to think that the pitch perfect tone-driven ode to millennial milieu is the directorial debut of co-writers Cazzie David and Elisa Kalani. In contrast, it makes perfect sense that ahead-of-her-time tastemaker Diablo Cody produced it.
“Single Drunk Female” breakout star Sofia Black-d’Elia leads the film as law student Mackenzie, who meets the man of her dreams, Finn (Ray Nicholson), at the birthday party of her bestie (writer/director David). However, charming broadcast journalist Finn is soon revealed to be a narcissist, and Mackenzie’s perfect love story becomes a harrowing nightmare of living in an abusive relationship in plain sight.
Raymond Cham Jr. and Jon Rudnitsky co-star.

Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Ariana Grande are in line to play the key three roles in the planned 9 To 5 remake.
We last heard an update on 20th Century Studios’ planned 9 To 5 remake last summer, with news that Juno writer Diablo Cody was coming on board to pen the script for the project which is set to be produced by Jennifer Aniston.
After trying to get the project up and running before, this time around Aniston looks to have found some momentum although the project isn’t officially greenlit yet, according to Life & Style (via Dark Horizons).
However, it’s the three names that are reportedly in the frame that will raise eyebrows, because if the project can secure Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Ariana Grande, that will represent a huge coup. It’ll be one of this year’s starriest ensembles, not least because Aniston is set...

Though having established himself as a major modern horror storyteller, Nosferatu's Robert Eggers couldn't crack the code on adapting a fellow iconic horror monster, Frankenstein. Eggers first broke out with the original horror movies The Witch and The Lighthouse, later branching out with his adaptation of the Scandinavian legend of Amleth in The Northman. With Nosferatu, which he spent nearly a decade developing, the writer/director ventured into a remake for his first time ever, which has already resulted in critical and commercial success.
During a recent interview with Curzon to discuss the release of Nosferatu, Eggers reflected on how he chooses which projects to develop, and his approach to then writing them. Amid this conversation, the writer/director recalled having attempted to develop his own take on Frankenstein, stating that it came about after the birth of his son, and got two weeks into it before he recognized...

Jennifer's Body has surprisingly found an unlikely spiritual successor fifteen years later in a new comic series: The Creeping Below. When Karyn Kusama and Diablo Cody's horror comedy, Jennifer's Body, hit theaters in 2009, the film received a pretty mixed reception. The film has since gained a cult following despite its bad Rotten Tomatoes score, and now a new horror comic is playing with its original concept to tell a new story.
The Creeping Below by Brian Azzarello and Vanesa R. Del Rey is a new horror series published by Boom! Studios that follows a woman named Val who attends a music festival in Oslo, Norway. She's described as a person who loves hardcore metal music, which leads her to a performance by a local group.
When she's offered the chance to meet with them, she takes the opportunity - only to realize that it was a dreadful mistake. The...

Ah, movie trailers. Are they still a unique medium unto themselves that are enjoyable to watch on their own? While the function and ethos of the trailer is the same as it ever was — to provide a first look at upcoming cinema releases, and sell the public on them by trying to promote their tone/premise/cast/etc. — there's no question that they've changed over the years from being endearingly idiosyncratic to being almost completely homogenous. After all, who isn't sick of hearing a slowed-down remix or cover version of a pop song stretched out over three minutes, intermittently broken up by dead air for punchy lines of dialogue and/or orchestra stings?
Trends in trailers have always been a thing, from the "cast of thousands" overselling of the 1930s and '40s to the "in a world..." Don Lafontaine '90s era to the "Bwaaam"-ified post-"Inception" period of the '10s,...

Arguably one of the most insufferable protagonists in literature is the title figure in Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s “The Sorrows of Young Werther” — a martyr to unrequited love who ultimately commits suicide. The author soon distanced himself from this early work, despite the fame it brought him. No doubt that was largely because the fuel it provided for the subsequent Romantic movement (which he disdained) proved so flammable; there arose real-life cases of copycat self-annihilation amongst readers who fancied themselves as theatrically bereft as his hero.
Few beyond academics now are likely to recall the huge cultural impact the book had a quarter-millennium ago. Still, you needn’t be savvy to that historical footnote to enjoy the new “Young Werther” — though it does help. “Based on the smash hit 1774 novel of tragic romance,” as opening onscreen text announces, Jose Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenco’s debut feature is a confident, clever update.

The feel-good dramedy series wrapped up its three-season run this past weekend, but there are plenty of other shows to watch next.
Pour out one last tiny ‘tini or margarini for TV’s best feel-good series. This past Sunday, Dec. 8, HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” starring Bridget Everett, finished airing its third and final season. Everett starred as Sam, a woman in her 40s who returns to her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, to navigate the death of her sister, where she finds a new and renewed community amongst her family and friends.
Few shows in recent memory have felt as warm and authentic as “Somebody Somewhere,” which also co-starred Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Murray Hill, and more, never shying away from sadness or loneliness but instead embracing it with empathy toward being alive.

Megan Fox's divisive 2024 sci-fi thriller with a 48% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes finds streaming success on Netflix. Fox’s starring role in Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise-starter rocketed her to stardom. She later appeared in the sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, reuniting her with a director she would later accuse of dictatorial on-set behavior.
Fox followed up her Transformers double-down by exploring other roles in genre films. She had a cult hit with Jennifer’s Body, from Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody. Josh Brolin was her co-star in the bomb comic book supernatural Western Jonah Hex. Fox then joined another franchise for a pair of films, playing April O’Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. In recent years, Fox has undergone an action-star makeover, earning herself a spot alongside Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham in Expendables 4.

A mixed history in cinema seems to be counting against Madonna as she publicly discusses disagreements with studios over her biopic.
In a world where musical biopics seemed to get commissioned with greater ease than any other genre you’d think a Madonna movie would be an instant green light. After all, she’s an icon of pop with an incredibly interesting life story and a back catalogue of hits to rival any musical biopic that has come before.
The project did make it into some kind of development back in 2020, with Madonna and Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody working on an early version. Then Erin Cressida Wilson was drafted in to co-write alongside Madonna before the project was scrapped by Universal.

Child actors have been known to have very tough lives outside of the lighthearted shows they’ve been on, and their transition to adulthood is usually paved with all kinds of mistakes made public because of their status.

Ahhh, fall. It’s finally here. The leaves are dropping, pumpkin spice is in the air (and everyone’s coffee), and the holidays are close enough where we’re all either rushing to get our work done before the end of the year or starting to wind down in hopes that people will soon stop bothering us. It’s a magical time, especially with new awards contenders like “Anora” and “Conclave” finally releasing to wide audiences, but let’s not forget that older films deserve some love too. Especially around Thanksgiving, a holiday specifically designed for reflection. What better way to celebrate than looking back on some classics of cinema, both the widely seen and the obscure.

On Friday, Oct. 19, Variety partnered with the Santa Fe International Film festival to celebrate its 10 Screenwriters to Watch. All 10 recipients gathered at Santa Fe’s Lensic Performing Arts Center for a lively conversation about their path to screenwriting and the work that earned them their place on Variety’s annual list of the most promising up-and-coming scribes in the entertainment industry.
The panel began with a conversation about the films that first made them want to be screenwriters — and in some cases, exposed them to the idea that writing for film and television was a job they could pursue. Among their responses, “Fancy Dance” co-screenwriter Miciana Alise named John Huston’s “Annie” (“Carol Burnett just takes up the whole screen”), while her partner Erica Tremblay remembered “The Last Emperor” making a lasting impression; Noah Pink (“Eden”) said “Jurassic Park;” Tory Kamen (“Eleanor the Great”) and Nora Garrett (“After the Hunt”) agreed that “Juno,...

Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night” has hit theaters nationwide, chronicling the chaotic 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live” in 1975, releasing on the 49th anniversary of the long-running sketch comedy on October 11. With this movie expected to be a contender at the upcoming 2025 Academy Awards, let’s take a closer look at the filmmaker’s previous four Oscar nominations in three different categories for just two of his films.
After Reitman’s directorial debut in 2005 for “Thank You For Smoking,” he achieved commercial and critical success for his coming-of-age film “Juno” in 2007, starring Elliot Page as the titular teenage character who deals with her unexpected pregnancy and wants to give it up for adoption. While the comedy was praised for its screenplay by Diablo Cody and lead performance, Reitman’s direction was not recognized at any of the major precursor award ceremonies, which is why it...

The months leading up to Halloween and the day itself are a time when I revisit some of my favorite movies that fit the tone and atmosphere of the season. While plenty of them fall into the horror category and have scary moments, many incorporate humor and satire into their stories, giving them added depth and commenting on the genre. Of course, classics like Scream, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Halloween are perfect for watching this time of year, and horror movie franchises with legendary final girls are some of my favorites.
However, these movies are so synonymous with horror that I watch them almost any time of year. Conversely, my Halloween picks are projects that don't feel right to watch when there isn't a chill in the air. Ella Purnell is done hiding her own rage.
“In a climate where we’re just getting increasingly silenced, [women] have a lot to say, and the more you try to silence someone the louder, in my experience, you want to scream,” the “Yellowjackets” and “Fallout” actress told IndieWire.
So it makes sense that Purnell’s latest series — and her debut as an executive producer — is with “Sweetpea,” a show that is like the “female ‘Dexter’ meets ‘Fleabag,'” according to the star.
The Starz official series description bills the dark comedy as a “deviously twisted coming-of-rage story,” something that also resonants with Purnell. And while the “rage” emphasis has been made trendy from creatives such as Taylor Swift to Diablo Cody, “Sweetpea” puts a murderous twist on finding your voice.
Purnell plays Rhiannon Lewis, a woman whose life passes her by…that is, until she finds power in wielding an ax.

[Editor’s Note: The below contains spoilers for “Jennifer’s Body.”]
Hell may be a teenage girl, but the occult taking over high school halls is nothing new. The 2009 film “Jennifer’s Body,” though, ushered in a new era of “female rage” being shown onscreen. And what better age to capture coming into power than being a teen?
Academy Award-winning “Juno” scribe Diablo Cody wrote the now-iconic feature, with Karyn Kusama (“Yellowjackets”) directing. The appropriately titled “Jennifer’s Body” hinges on how high school queen bee Jennifer (Megan Fox) wields her newfound sex appeal. Sure, she may look like a grown woman on the outside, but does teen Jennifer really know how to navigate adult situations? Not quite.
So when Jennifer sets her sights on seducing the lead singer (Adam Brody) of a band touring through town, it doesn’t totally go to plan. Turns out that the aforementioned rockers want to sacrifice a virgin, and Jennifer lies about having no sexual history whatsoever.

A decade ago, Mackenzie Davis’ breakout role as Cameron Howe on AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire had just finished airing as part of the series’ well received but criminally underseen first season. Fortunately for Halt, the network’s flagship shows, Mad Men and Breaking Bad, had mostly concluded their decorated runs at that point, and AMC, in the interest of creating new critical darlings, decided to invest further in Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers’ under-viewed drama series, something that’s a rarity in this day and age of increasingly impatient networks, studios and streamers.
Davis played a gifted young computer programmer who was at the forefront of the personal computing and internet revolutions in the ’80s and ’90s, and throughout the rest of the series, she had an off-and-on romantic relationship with Lee Pace’s visionary entrepreneur, Joe MacMillan. Alongside their initially married friends and intermittent business partners,...

I love campy teen fodder as much as the next horror fan, but sometimes the film we buy a ticket to see is not exactly what we were given in the trailer…A testosterone-fueled movie about underground fighting might actually be a dark satire that deconstructs masculinity, like Fight Club. Quirky romantic comedies end up being soul-crushing melancholic dramas like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And sometimes you have to find out the hard way that “reimagined classic” is marketing speak for, “this is a musical.” But one misunderstood gem forever stands out to me for being a powerful film ahead of its time. More than a year ago, it was announced that Oscar-winning Juno writer Diablo Cody was set to produce a film based on Violet Karim’s webcomic Death of a Pop Star. Just three months ago, we heard that Cody would be writing the screenplay for a remake of the iconic 1980 comedy 9 to 5. Now, we have updates on both of those projects, as Entertainment Weekly reported that, during an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con, Cody revealed that she has already finished writing the script for the 9 to 5 remake, but the Death of a Pop Star adaptation is still in the development phase.

Perhaps one of the most beloved comedies of the 1980s, 9 to 5 is getting a brand-new remake with Friends alum Jennifer Aniston producing. Premiering in 1980, the film concerns three women who work under a tyrannical boss and decide to teach him a lesson in humility. The hilarious workplace farce was anchored by the trio of performances by Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin but managed to be just as poignant as it was hilarious. Touching on issues like workplace discrimination and sexism, 9 to 5 still manages to be powerful today.

Diablo Cody's 9 to 5 reboot will explore intergenerational workplace conflicts, shifting focus from the battle of sexes. The remake will highlight changing workplace dynamics since the original and focus on boundaries and cultural clashes. Jennifer Aniston's production, led by Cody, may offer a fresh take on the classic comedy, addressing modern workplace issues.
Writer Diablo Cody explains how her remake of Dolly Parton's 1980 comedy 9 to 5 will shift its focus and update its central struggle to capture a more contemporary workplace culture clash. Colin Higgin's comedy starred Parton, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin as a trio of women working under a ruthless, cruel, and bigoted vice president who come together to end his reign of terror. While no sequel ever came to pass after 39 years of false starts and speculation, Jennifer Anniston is set to produce a remake, with Cody set to write following 2024's horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein.

Francine Pascal, the author best known for creating hit teen book series “Sweet Valley High,” has died. She was 92.
Pascal died on Sunday in New York, the New York Times reports. The cause of death was lymphoma Pascal’s daughter, Laurie Wenk-Pascal, told the newspaper.
“Sweet Valley High” debuted in 1983 after a friend remarked to Pascal there was no teen version of 1980s soap “Dallas.” Pascal was reportedly inspired to create the series, about blonde Californian twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, immediately. The books went on to spawn hundreds of sequels and spin-offs detailing the twins at different ages, ranging from middle school to college. There were also some wackier books which saw the twins mixed up in murders and even supernatural events.

Writer Diablo Cody has been chatting about the upcoming 9 to 5 remake and it’ll focus on a generational divide. More on it below.
In April, we learned that Diablo Cody was writing and Jennifer Aniston was producing a new remake of the 1980s classic film 9 To 5 for 20th Century Studios.
Cody visited the San Diego Comic-Con last weekend and told Entertainment Weekly (via Deadline here) that the script for the remake has been finished and it’ll be a little different from the original.
“One thing that was really fun about it for me is that the original movie focused on the battle of the sexes and the corporate world,” Cody said. “And to me, I see most of the conflict taking place generationally, like Gen Z versus boomers in the workplace, and how now we have this whole generation of people coming up who’ve learned to set boundaries,...

Diablo Cody has completed the script for the 9 to 5 remake.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at Comic-Con 2024 on Friday, the filmmaker talked about the differences between her version from the 1980 classic starring Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin, and Jane Fonda. The remake, which Jennifer Aniston will produce, is still in development.
“One thing that was really fun about it for me is that the original movie focused on the battle of the sexes and the corporate world,” Cody said. “And to me, I see most of the conflict taking place generationally, like Gen Z versus boomers in the workplace, and how now we have this whole generation of people coming up who’ve learned to set boundaries, and that is actually, shockingly enough, a new development.”
She added, “You have other generations out there in the corporate world who we’re told just to kind of suck it up. So there’s definitely a cultural clash there,...

Music icon Madonna is no stranger to the film side of entertainment. The singer would crossover into movies on many occasions, including starring in a variety of projects like Body of Evidence, A League of Their Own and Dick Tracy. For a time, she would even be married to director Guy Ritchie, who she made a film with called Swept Away. In the past few years, Madonna had been reportedly developing a biopic about herself in which she would be in the rare position to both write and direct. Early last year, the project would not come together and she scrapped the project just ahead of her world tour.
Deadline is now reporting that the 80s pop icon teased on her Instagram that the project is once again in development. Madonna posted a slideshow that featured a series of pictures of her working on a typewriter and her table is littered with screenplay pages.

Julia Garner is still set to play the Queen of Pop, with Madonna herself directing the film of her life. More here.
It’s been a year and a half since we learned that Universal’s planned Madonna had been scrapped. The original plan saw Juno writer Diablo Cody pen a script that would be directed by Madonna herself. Although the music legend has directed in her time, this was still a pretty unconventional arrangement.
One aspect of the production that looked very promising was the appointment of Julia Garner in the lead role. Garner was chosen by Madonna herself, reportedly picked out of a song and dance bootcamp and anointed by the Queen of Pop.
Who’s That Girl was of course the title of the 1987 song (and accompanying film) that helped push Madonna’s fame levels into the stratosphere during that era. It looks like it might also be...

Madonna’s biopic is back in the works, nearly a year and a half after news broke that it wasn’t moving forward.
The film about the singer’s life, which was set to chronicle her decades-long career, was originally set at Universal Pictures, but plans for it fell through in January 2023.
In a new Instagram post, Madonna shared a compilation of photos of her working on a typewriter, with an array of papers around her. In one of the shots, a potential title — Who’s That Girl, a nod to her 1987 song and film of the same name — is seen on the first page of what looks like a script.
Another glimpse at the script reads “rewrites by Madonna and Ecw,” seemingly referring to Secretary writer Erin Cressida Wilson, who was brought onto the project after Diablo Cody had to step away from it. Amy Pascal was set to produce the movie originally.

Madonna is back at work on her biopic, as the iconic singer confirmed on social media.
Madonna shared on Instagram that she is back writing the film’s screenplay, with the feature now titled “Who’s That Girl,” a classic reference in the annals of Madonna lore. “Who’s That Girl” is also the title of James Foley’s 1987 comedy feature (which marked one of Madonna’s first movie roles and co-starred Griffin Dunne), a soundtrack single for the film, and Madonna’s world tour that same year.
“I Need A-lot of Bandz to make this………..Okay,” Madonna captioned, adding, “Story of my life.”
