Franchise films are always popular, but cinephiles especially love talking about trilogies. Even if a production house or filmmaker never intended to make one, fans still find connections and label them as unofficial trilogies. That cult-like passion for trilogies and franchises continues, and “Back to the Future” remains one of the most successful and beloved franchises ever made. One of the biggest reasons this trilogy remains popular today is its simplicity in the narrative, which is easy to follow, and the characters remain relatable to both young people and children. It wasn’t just the late ’80s and early ’90s audiences & kids who were the original targets when the films were first released. Even now, fans around the world continue to celebrate and enjoy the trilogy.

“Precisely” four years after the original, director Robert Zemeckis returned with screenwriter Bob Gale for the second instalment of the “Back To The Future” franchise. By now, we’ve all lived through 2015 and can easily look back and laugh at how they imagined the future. But, “Back To The Future Part 2” (1989) almost did a decent job in predicting 2015. Some ideas, like getting multiple fax messages at once, might have felt futuristic at the time, but they seem quaint now to modern eyes. Still, the film was ambitious; most importantly, it dared to use time travel to introduce paradoxes to a mainstream audience in the late 1980s.

Back to the Future Turns 40 as Lea Thompson Picks Her Favorite & Least Favorite Films of the Trilogy
Back to the Future is officially 40 years old, a milestone that may have many fans thinking, "Great Scott!" After four decades, the franchise remains as popular as ever, and it all goes back to the immense success of the original.
Per People, franchise star Lea Thompson addressed the big anniversary. Fans will recall how Thompson played Lorraine Baines McFly, the mother of Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly. Thompson played different versions of the character in Back to the Future Part II, playing a big part in the story of the second movie as she did in the first. In the third film, Thompson played Lorraine as well as one of the McFly family's ancestors, Maggie McFly, but even with multiple roles, her screen time was still reduced compared to the previous installments.

Great Scott! Back to the Future has hit the big 4-0, roughly half the speed required to send Doc Brown's DeLorean back and forth in time. But the Robert Zemeckis-directed movie doesn't feel like ancient history, even if it first zipped into theaters in the distant past of the 1980s. Fueled by pedal to the metal pacing, ingeniously-designed set-pieces and the dynamic duo Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, Back to the Future, released on July 3, 1985, remains an eternally youthful summer blockbuster even while other studio films of that era are rattling around with broken parts.
Genius isn't always recognized in its time, though, which is why the movie's relatively poor showing at the 58th Academy Awards — held on March 24, 1986 — hangs extra-heavy four decades later. Back to the Future received four nominations and took home a single statue as Sydney Pollack's Out of Africa emerged as the evening's big winner.

As one of the most beloved movie trilogies of all time, Back to the Future has no shortage of iconic scenes. High school student Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and Doctor Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) are one of the most well-known duos in cinematic history as they travel to the past and future via a DeLorean time machine. Back to the Future's various timelines spanning from 1885 to 2015 allow the story to continue for three movies and keep the trilogy engaging.
The movies' iconic nature is largely grounded in Back to the Future's best quotes, ranging from Doc Brown's "Great Scott!" to Marty saying, "Nobody calls me chicken!" Many of the quotes and scenes from the first Back to the Future movie made such a strong impact that they are repeated, albeit in different ways, during the second and third films. Did Principal Strickland ever have hair? And were the McFlys always slackers? The answers nearly came true at FanExpo New Orleans over the weekend, as Michael J. Fox and James Tolkan reunited, recreating their famous showdown at Hill Valley High.
In the photo (seen below), Michael J. Fox and James Tolkan joined up to give a modern recreation of the scene in which Principal Strickland gives Marty McFly a verbal berating in the hallway, telling him, “You got a real attitude problem, McFly; you’re a slacker. You remind me of your father when he went here; he was a slacker, too.” Really the only thing that would have made this shot better was if Claudia Wells (Jennifer Parker) was by Fox’s side. As the caption reads: “Slackers never change and Mr. Strickland will be sure to remind you. Michael J. Fox and James Tolkan reunited at #FANEXPONewOrleans2025 today...

There are a few films from the 1980s that have managed to stand the test of time, and remain endearing classics to this day. E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Terminator are just a few that come to mind, as does Back to the Future, Robert Zemeckis' sci-fi classic starring Michael J. Fox. Released in 1985, the time-traveling tale about a teenager sent back to 1955 to make sure his parents fall in love in order to save his own existence was filled with memorable moments. Now, 40 years later, Fox and one of his co-stars recently reunited to recreate one of our favorite scenes, and the results are enough to bring a tear to your eye.

Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox reunites with James Tolkan to recreate an iconic scene 40 years later. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the hit 1985 sci-fi adventure story stars Fox as Marty McFly, a teenager who accidentally travels 30 years back in time and becomes entwined in the lives of his young parents. The film, which was a major hit, features a number of memorable scenes and moments, including one in which McFly is scolded and called a slacker by his principal, Mr. Strickland (Tolkan), after arriving late for class.
Fox and Tolkan now reunite to recreate this McFly and Strickland scene in a new image shared by Fan Expo New Orleans on January 11, 2025. The mini Back to the Future reunion image features Tolkan, 93, pointing his finger at Fox, 63, in a scolding manner as the two sit side-by-side, a callback to their encounter within the halls of Hill Valley High School.

Though it's well-known as a family movie, Back to the Future Part II has some jokes that aren't safe for work, and one can only be seen by pausing at exactly the right moment. While there were some things Back to the Future Part II got right about 2015, not all of its predictions were right. From self-lacing sneakers to flying cars, there were a few wild predictions about the future in one of the best Back to the Future movies. One such prediction was only in a few seconds of the film, and finding it means finding a dirty joke that wasn't intended for young audiences.

The Back to the Future movies are timeless classics, entertaining audiences over many decades. One of the biggest standouts of this franchise is Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown, who lights up the screen as the remarkable inventor. Despite the length of time that has occurred between the movie's release and the current date, it's still one of Christopher Lloyd's most memorable roles.
Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis's Back to the Future trilogy contains many fun and insightful lines from Christopher Lloyd's eccentric scientist. Doc Brown's sayings are both entertaining and inspiring, perfectly conveying the character's oddball personality. These Back to the Future quotations are fondly remembered by moviegoers, and confirm Doc Brown to be the trilogy's greatest character.

The DeLorean in the Back to the Future franchise is one of the most iconic movie cars of all time, and rightfully so, but Marty McFly's truck present in all three Back to the Future films also deserves a place alongside the others. Back to the Future was a staple of the '80s, and is generally considered one of the greatest trilogies in cinematic. Featuring a time-traveling DeLorean, Back to the Future's vehicles are always so cool, including a beautiful Toyota truck that plays a significant role throughout the franchise.
Early on in Back to the Future, Marty McFly sees a beautiful, black 1985 Toyota SR5, telling Jennifer he will own it one day. After returning from the past, Marty actually receives the truck as a gift from his parents. The 1980s wasn’t just a decade, it was the cinematic revolution that gave us teased hair, neon clothes, and some of the most unforgettable movies ever made. It was a time when movies gave us stories that became timeless and the characters felt like old friends with memorable one-liners. From John Hughes’ high school comedies to Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi flicks, a world without ‘80s movies is almost unimaginable. Today. The classical tales of the ‘80s are embedded in our pop culture, reflected in everything from today’s biggest blockbusters to late-night comedies.

When it first hit cinemas in 1985, Back to the Future earned rave reviews. It even went on to earn an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay as well as become the top grossing film of that year. The ideal casting of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as the time travelers Marty McFly and Doc Brown, respectively, became pop culture icons, as did the DeLorean time machine. Expectations ran high when Universal Pictures announced director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale would return for the sequel, along with Fox and Lloyd for a sequel.

Thought may be the most powerful force in the space-time continuum. As Doctor Emmett L. Brown says in "Back to the Future," the act is the one and only key to guaranteed success: "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything." This is why any system of control seeks to quell (if not eradicate) free thought as its primary goal because those behind such systems rightfully understand that thought is the biggest threat to their maintaining power. Although governments and censorship boards banning art can be done under a variety of pretenses — this is deemed obscene, that is deemed offensive, and so on — what censoring or outright banning art really does is keep people in line.
Of course, that doesn't mean censorship always makes a ton of sense. Numerous instances of censored or banned art feel absolutely baffling. For instance, did you know that depicting someone head-butting...

The Back to the Future franchise jumps between the past, present, and future, meaning several actors appear in multiple roles, sometimes separated by hundreds of years. Ranking the Back to the Future movies is admittedly difficult, as the three installments are collectively considered one of the best trilogies in film history. The reason for this is the heartfelt yet equally hilarious stories at the center of each movie, set against the unique and exciting backdrop of Back to the Future's various timelines.

From references to the past, future, and Marty McFly's present, there are Easter eggs aplenty as the time travel-centric stories play out. Back to the Futures Marty McFly is a great protagonist with plenty of strengths, but several aspects of his character havent aged particularly well, and prove that he was always somewhat unlikeable. McFly was responsible for some of Back to the Futures best quotes and most iconic scenes throughout the entire trilogy, and despite his flaws, he remains a beloved character that plays a crucial role in these films. Its certainly true that Back to the Future wouldnt have been such an enormous success without him - but some of his traits didnt need to be played so negatively.

Thirty-nine seconds of cringe.
That’s the only way to describe a single deleted scene from Back to the Future that thankfully found its way to the cutting room floor. In one view, the missing 40 seconds simply takes the movie’s existing discomfort to another level. In another light, the scene somehow manages to add a new layer of ick.
The scene in question begins with an anxious Marty outside the high school, contemplating a scheme he’s concocted with Doc Brown that involves young McFly putting the moves on his own mother. “You look a little pale,” observes Doc. “Are you okay?”
Of course he’s not okay! Wasn’t there any other way to get back to the future than by attempting to seduce teenage Lorraine? It’s bad enough that she’s already scoped out his Calvin Kleins.

Everybody loves Back to the Future, the classic story of a suburban teen who drives a cocaine trafficker’s luxury car into the 1950s and inadvertently seduces his own mother. Fun for the whole family!
Yeah, there’s a lot of creepy stuff going on in these movies that spawned a literal children’s Saturday morning cartoon— from Doc Brown’s multiple crimes to the fact that Marty and Doc’s adventures through time somehow doomed Princess Diana.
Obviously, the whole thing is based on a wildly uncomfortable premise, featuring a climax that requires our hero to make out with his own mother in order to preserve the integrity of the space-time continuum, while also ensuring that he’ll spend the rest of his life in intense psychotherapy.
The original movie is so gross, a lot of people seemingly haven’t noticed that the third movie is also incredibly incestuous.

Struzan's skill as a prolific artist is evident in the Back to the Future poster and his work on over 150 quintessential film posters.

The "Back to the Future" films are incredibly beloved, with a unique impact on pop culture that's almost hard to quantify. Robert Zemeckis' 1985 film "Back to the Future" spawned two sequels, a video game, and even a musical, as well as providing the genesis for the adult cartoon "Rick and Morty." The first movie is a zany tale of down-on-his-luck teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) who ends up traveling through time in a DeLorean with the help of mad scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), wreaking havoc on the timeline and engaging in all kinds of silly time travel tropes along the way. The second film is a direct continuation of the first, with time travel to 1955 and 2015 to try and create the best future for Marty and his family. It's not as beloved as the first movie, but folks are still pretty fond of it. Then there's the "Back to the Future Part III,...

We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.

The concept of time travel, though usually lumped in with science fiction, is actually far closer to fantasy. The notion is rooted in nostalgia, the collective unconscious assumption that there was such a thing as "the good old days." It's also borne out of an interest in history, which as "The Holdovers" so recently and succinctly stated, is really an interest in knowing more about ourselves. While actual time travel will likely never exist, a particular form of it has already existed for over 100 years: cinema.
If poring through film history allows a viewer to ostensibly travel through time, then it only follows that cinema would be a natural tool to examine history and time travel as well. When co-writer and producer Bob Gale hit upon his father's old high school yearbook one day and wondered if he and his father would've been friends (let alone like each other) had...

Countdown number-wrangler Carol Vorderman will tell you that she appeared on the very first celebrity version of a British TV show in December 1998, but Carol Vorderman has been getting high on her own supply. 18 months before she gave her Cher in a 1998 episode of Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes, Wendy Richard and Todd Carty from EastEnders graced episode one of Celebrity Ready Steady Cook, and they’d appreciate Vorders giving it a bit less of all that, thank you.
The point being: celebrity versions of TV shows are mostly dross. Not being able to choose from the top drawer of fame, they generally feature the packing peanuts of the TV world. These shows use what might be described as a homeopathic definition of ‘celebrity’, in that this glass of water has a better chance of remembering who any of the cast are than I do.

The Flash references Back to the Future, joking about Eric Stoltz's original casting as Marty McFly. Back to the Future Part 2 and Part 3 didn't live up to the success of the first film, with lower box office numbers. The sequels lost the generational nostalgia that made the first film relatable to both young and older audiences. The sequels diverged from the original film's genre, with Part 2 taking a darker turn and Part 3 leaning into a Western theme, potentially alienating certain viewers.
The first Back to the Future movie is regarded as a better success than its sequels, and there are several fundamental reasons why. Though the trilogy as a whole has aged well, the box office and critic reviews of Back to the Future Part 2 and Back to the Future Part 3 reveal that they weren't so well received upon their release. This came down to the elements of the first film that were lost in the following two, from the general feel and genre to the nostalgic perspective of decades past.

Where to Watch Powered by Back to the Future has a minor mistake in one of its iconic scenes that almost ruined the story's continuity, but it's a reminder of the complexities of filmmaking in the 1980s. The camera mistake in Marty's video footage can be explained by the movie's concept of altering the future by changing the past, adding a fun twist to the error without detracting from the overall storytelling.
Although Back to the Future is viewed by countless audiences as a perfect movie, there is a little behind-scenes mistake seen in one of the film's most iconic scenes that almost ruined the story. It was obviously much more common for mistakes like these to happen in the early ‘80s, when the process of making a movie was much more complicated and laborious than it can be today. However, this mistake, in particular, was noticed by plenty of fans upon release and rewatch.

This review contains spoilers for the show's visual surprises.
The original 1985 "Back to the Future" movie is a fantasy. It's a teen time travel fantasy about knocking sense into your disappointing parents and ensuring they grow into better people. It's a fantasy where "If You Put Your Mind To It, You Can Accomplish Anything" pays dividends as an adage. It's also a visual effects dream — courtesy of its director-screenwriter Robert Zemeckis and Ilm — that rode the waves of critical and commercial success, two sequels, pop culture homages, and now a "Back to the Future: The Musical."
The famed DeLorean time machine skids onto Broadway's Winter Garden stage, as the West End version dances on. Within a few blinding flashes, the vehicle pops up like magic thanks to Chris Fisher's illusion work and Tim Lutkin & Hugh Vanstone's tactful lighting. Its 3D scan designed by Tim Hatley, the DeLorean feels alive.

An Eric Stoltz Back to the Future role almost happened when he was cast as Marty McFly, the role that eventually went to Michael J Fox. Stoltz’s time playing Marty McFly was cut short, partially due to his interpretation of the Back to the Future ending as a tragedy. Back to the Future's ending is bleak, and the movie ends with Marty McFly returning to 1985 from his trip to 1955. Along the way, Marty adjusted his own future, returning to a version of 1985 where his family members were better versions of themselves. The Eric Stoltz Back to the Future interpretation was that this was a tragic ending, which wasn't how director Robert Zemeckis saw it.

Michael J. Fox recalls that a particular scene from Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood came to mind at the moment when he decided it was time to retire. Fox first rose to prominence with the show Family Ties before then rocketing to fame with his role as Marty McFly in Back To The Future. In 1991, however, at the age of 29, Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological condition that eventually led to his retirement from acting in 2020 at age 58.

Busted have announced a greatest hits reunion tour to celebrate their 20th anniversary.
On Thursday (23 March), the band posted a video on Instagram informing fans that they are back for a special anniversary tour.
“Busted is back,” they wrote in the caption for the video, before informing fans that tickets will go on sale from Friday 31 March.
The British boy band were hugely famous in the noughties for pop-punk hits such as “Year 3000”, “What I Go To School For” and “Crashed The Wedding”.
The group, consisting of Charlie Simpson, Matt Willis and James Bourne, were teens in Busted’s early days, and are now in their late 30s.
Although they may not have been together as Busted for a while, the group members have been very busy for the last 20 years.
So what exactly have Busted been up to for the last two decades?

Eric Stoltz being cast as Marty McFly and spending several weeks filming the role before Michael J. Fox replaced him is easily one of the most widely-known pieces of "Back to the Future" trivia there is and for obvious reasons. But as fascinating as it is to wonder what might've been had Stoltz gotten to drive Emmett "Doc" Brown's time-traveling DeLorean all the way to the finish line, he's far from the only "What if?" bit of casting when it comes to that McFly kid.

Back to the Future is a beloved film classic all about time travel and timeline shenanigans, so how would the story look in a timeline where Marty had a little extra help? The Back to the Future trilogy revolves entirely around Marty McFly and Emmet "Doc" Brown, but there's another character who gets in on the time travel antics for a moment and is largely left by the wayside thereafter - Jennifer Parker, Marty's girlfriend. So what would the trilogy's timeline look like if Jennifer had gone back jumped in Back to the Future’s DeLorean with Marty on that first trip to 1955?
The most obvious change would be that Jennifer would have a presence throughout Back to the Future's first film and likely be instrumental in Marty and Doc's plans. She'd also consequently have a much larger role in Back to the Future 2, potentially being a far more...

With the news that singer-songwriter Foxes will make her TV acting debut in an upcoming episode of Doctor Who, Digital Spy brings you everything you need to know about the vulpine-named musical starlet.
Doctor Who: Singer Foxes to star and perform in series 8
So who is Foxes, anyway?
Foxes is a 25-year-old Londoner (originally from Southampton) whose mum knows her as Louisa Rose Allen. She uses the stage name Foxes so she doesn't get muddled up with Lily Rose Allen, and because her mum had a weird dream about foxes one time.
She confesses to writing "songs that make you feel like everything's s**t at the beginning and then everything's great by the end". Her debut album's out now but you've probably already heard her on songs like Zedd's 'Clarity'.
Do any of the bin-delving, urban mammals appear in her band as her namesake suggests?
Don't be silly.

What will be the Breaking Bad of 2014? We can probably rule out Splash! and the comeback for Birds of a Feather, but other than that there's a pretty open field for new dramas this year, hoping to fill a Heisenberg-shaped hole.
HBO's gritty new serial killer series is currently the most likely contender with incredible trailers and some serious hype. If we could only watch one new show next year, this would be it. It arrives in the Us in January and on Sky Atlantic in February.

Gary Barlow casually announced his intention to quit The X Factor midway through an assessment of Rough Copy's cover of Phil Collins's 'In The Air Tonight' on Saturday evening, providing a rare flicker of excitement in a weirdly uneventful opening weekend for series 10's Live Shows.
After three years as the head judge on the ITV talent show, the Take That star has decided to hang up his mentoring boots and head back to touring and piano-tinkling as a solo act and with Mark, Howard, Jason (and possibly Robbie).
His track record on the show isn't much of a CV to brag about (Cocozza, The Maloney, Craig bloody Colton), but Barlow's serious-face has been a useful ying to the bonkers yang of Louis Walsh and co.
So who can possibly fill his boots when series 11 (yes 11!) rolls around in 2014? Here are our five best guesses.
