Raatma: The Real-Life Inspiration For The V/H/S/94 Creature Explained
Image
Raatma is a frightening creature who appears in a memorable segment of V/H/S/94 and a lot of thought went into the monster. V/H/S/94 is the fourth installment of the V/H/S found footage franchise. The first film, which premiered in 2012 and helped define the decade's cult horror movie boom, features segments of horror films, directed by up-and-coming horror directors, all connected by an equally terrifying wrap-around segment. V/H/S/94 follows the same format, though with the wrap-around and segments taking place in 1994.

V/H/S/94 is one of the best movies in the V/H/S franchise thanks to its solid lineup of segments, suitably creepy and mysterious wrap-around, and a more polished and updated look that still has a documentary feel. In the first segment of the horror anthology, "Storm Drain", a Channel 6 News reporter from Westerville, Ohio, Holly Marciano (Anna Hopkins), and her cameraman Jeff (Christian Potenza), investigate what they think is a local...

Lifetime Plugs True-Crime Film Slate With Trivia-Night Event in Los Angeles
Image
In the not too distant past, NBC's Saturday Night Live once spoofed our crippling obsession with true crime with a lively music video that connoisseurs of the subgenre will certainly find hysterical. "The struggle is real," as they say, when it comes to resisting the urge to binge all the deliciously dark content that's out there, especially since it's real-life ordeals we're talking about. Another television network, Lifetime, has also been capitalizing on the crime TV trend, especially as of late with a new slate of films this fall that are either based on or inspired by recent gritty stories about betrayal, murder, affairs and more. "Ripped from the Headlines" is what Lifetime is dubbing its latest lineup of "Truly Unbelievable" films, which include household names like Bill Pullman and Melissa Joan Hart.

In celebration of the added material, the network recently hosted a true-crime trivia night in Los Angeles,...

Image
This Halloween season, Lifetime unveils “Truly Unbelievable Movies,” a Ripped from the Headlines Event featuring a slate of seven new original movies featuring top talent.

All produced earlier this year, the lineup includes Lifetime’s milestone 500th original movie, the two-night event Murdaugh Murders: The Movie starring Bill Pullman as Alex Murdaugh who, on the surface is a prominent and respected South Carolina lawyer, loving husband and father but behind closed doors, lived a drug-filled secret life that ultimately led to murder.

The event officially kicked off on September 17, and brand new original movies will debut on Saturdays at 8p/7c from now through October 28, 2023.

Here’s the full “Truly Unbelievable Movies” lineup from Lifetime….

‘Stolen Baby: The Murder Of Heidi Broussard’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: Who Is Magen Fieramusca?
Image
Someone has rightly said that there is no greater glory in the world than love. Additionally, there isn’t any worse punishment than jealousy. We start doubting all our bonds with our friends when the resentfulness of Magen Fieramusca takes the life of her best friend, Heidi Broussard. Stolen Baby: The Murder of Heidi Broussard revolves around a true crime event in Austin where trust is butchered. Under the skillful direction of Michelle Oullet, the film cuts straight to the event without delving much into a dramatic build-up before the tragedy befalls Heidi Broussard and her baby Emma.

The able actresses, Anna Hopkins and Emily Osment, do justice to the respective characters of Heidi and Magen in Stolen Baby. The portrayal of an incident where a mother is killed and her baby taken away is quite shocking. Magen’s obsession with Heidi’s baby from the very beginning makes us...

Mediawan takes ‘For The Record’ rights

Exclusive: French distributor Mediawan has taken worldwide distribution and European/LatAm format rights for For The Record, CBC Gem’s shortform comedy from Suits actor Julian De Zotti. Mediawan will take the comedy, which stars De Zotti alongside The Expanses’ Anna Hopkins, on the road following this week’s Mipcom. ‘V/H/S/94’ Review: An Uneven but Entertaining Horror Franchise Revival
Image
Not the only Halloween-ready franchise being resuscitated this month, “V/H/S/94” puts back in action the omnibus series that was last seen seven years ago with disappointing third entry “V/H/S: Viral.” This belated return lands closer in quality to the 2012 kickoff feature than the following year’s superior “V/H/S/2,” as a mixed bag of entertainingly diverse if variably successful horror shorts. Going straight to genre streaming platform Shudder on Oct. 6, it should provide fans with a satisfying enough, seasonally apt new package of macabre tales still linked by a faux-found-footage concept.

That style does not seem a natural fit for Jennifer Reeder, who made the very mannered, David Lynchian feature “Knives and Skin” two years ago. That divisive movie certainly had a firm grip on its aesthetics, and she seems divested of both inspiration and conviction having to go with a hand-held video look here. An underwhelming wraparound frame for the other segments,...

Fantasia Review: Tin Can is a Captivatingly Dark Pandemic Mystery
Despite being neither a household name nor one I could immediately place, seeing writer-director Seth A. Smith attached to a film while sifting through the schedule at the Fantasia International Film Festival forced me to pause. A quick search later revealed him to be the filmmaker behind 2017’s The Crescent—an under-rated gem that enthralled me via narrative and image alike. It didn’t therefore matter what his latest, Tin Can, was about; I felt confident it would prove memorable whether I ended up enjoying it or not. That this claustrophobic sci-fi thriller quickly won me over with its early David Cronenberg inspirations only allowed my excitement to increase with each passing minute as I found myself unable to detach from its captivatingly dark, timely pandemic mystery.

The disease he and co-writer Darcy Spidle have unleashed upon their world is known as Coral, a fungal infection that affixes itself to...

Tin Can - Jennie Kermode - 16935

Every year, epidemiologists identify somewhere between 10 and 30 new diseases with the potential to become dangerous pandemics. Horrific though Covid-19 has been, in the grand scale of things, it's just a little one. The Black Death killed a third of the population of Europe. Ebola - though it is thankfully more difficult to transmit and we have a very good vaccine against it - kills 90% of those it infects. The plague in Seth A Smith's latest science fiction thriller is even worse - and so is the approach to isolation which some people are resorting to in an attempt to escape it.

Our protagonist (Anna Hopkins) knows this disease well. She's a parasitologist who has been working on a cure. She's close. Just a bit more work and she's sure she can find a solution. But time is running out. Vast numbers of people have already died. The man...

‘An Algorithm Found You’: How Data Determines Price Tags for Films and Finds New Talent
Image
Like every production company, Jumpcut wants to discover new talent. As a data-driven startup, it leans on machine-learning algorithms to analyze content on YouTube and Reddit — everything from production value to the emotional response of commenters — and spits out a list of prospective content creators.

Jumpstart founder Kartik Hosanagar, who holds down a day job as the John C. Hower Professor of Operations, Information and Decisions at the Wharton School, said the algorithm frequently strikes gold. It found YouTube shorts created by actor Anna Hopkins, who’s appeared in Freeform’s “Shadowhunters” and “The Expanse” but was unknown — and unrepresented — in the industry as a writer.

“We called her and she said, ‘How did you guys find me, did somebody from NBC send you?,'” Hosanagar recalled. “‘We said no, no, no. An algorithm found you.'”

Hopkins had just sold a spec script to NBC around the time Jumpcut...

For The Record: There's Always Spotify - Jennie Kermode - 16685
Julian De Zotti
Ray (Julian De Zotti) and Angela (Anna Hopkins) are breaking up. Or rather, they've broken up - he's moved in with somebody else - but they still have to fully disentangle their stuff, and tonight that means the record collection. What will go with him and what will stay with her? As they argue, record get popped onto the turntable, bringing back potent memories of the way they felt about each other, for good or ill, in times past.

Part of a series of highly polished shorts exploring the influence that music has on out lives, There's Always Spotify, as its title suggests, uses a nostalgic hook and examines the different way that owning a piece of music in physical form, as opposed to just listening to it, makes us feel. There's an obvious parallel to the sense of ownership that being in a relationship can create, for good or ill,...

Rob Lowe in The Grinder (2015)

Rob Lowe in The Grinder (2015)
Somewhere, there’s an alternate universe where Rob Lowe practiced medicine not on Code Black, but as Grey’s Anatomy‘s McDreamy. Where Katie Holmes played Orange Is the New Black‘s Piper Chapman. And where Game of Thrones‘ Iwan Rheon almost played Game of Thrones‘… Jon Snow?!

Arrow Season 8: Charlie Barnett Cast as JJ Diggle
Delia Harrington Mike Cecchini Jul 21, 2019

Arrow has cast Charlie Barnett as the adult version of JJ, Diggle and Lyla's Flashpoint-born son

While it might feel like Arrow is getting ready to say goodbye with its final, 10-episode season starting this fall, there’s still time to say hello to at least one new face. At Comic Con, Arrow’s producers announced that we’re finally going to see JJ, John Diggle’s (David Ramsey) son, in Arrow’s flash-forwards, played by Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll, Tales of the City).

So far, we’ve only met JJ (short for John Jr.) in the present tense where he’s a baby. JJ is a living artifact of the Flashpoint storyline. In the original timeline, Diggle and Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson) had a daughter they named Sara, after Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) who was – at the time – deceased. Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin...

Review: Arrow the Complete Sixth Season
Although Arrow set the tone and allowed the CW to grow its own integrated television universe, the series itself has been a maddening, uneven affair that always seems to take three steps forward then backslide at least one.

In what could have been a final season, that unevenness was never more frustrating as the show whipsawed characters and situations into increasingly dumb configurations that annoyed rather than entertained.

You can revisit all the nonsense in Arrow: The Complete Sixth Season, out now on Blu-ray and Digital HD from Warner Home Entertainment.

Season Five ended with Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) finally comfortable with one another, ready to resume their romance. Everyone is manipulated or kidnapped to find themselves on Lian Yu as Adrian Chase John Segara), who is excessively over-prepared, blows it all to hell.

We open the new season with the aftermath, starting with the...

Teen Choice Awards 2018 Winners: Riverdale Leads the Way
The TeenChoice Awards made a splashy return to Fox Sunday night, and some of the biggest teen dramas were well-represented in the winners' circle.

Riverdale secured nine wins out the nine categories it was nominated in. It was nominated more than once in three categories, meaning it had 12 total nominations.

This is great news for the buzzy CW drama which benefited from increased ratings when it returned last October.

Shadowhunters, which was canceled at Freeform earlier this year was also well-represented.

All told, have a look at the full list of winners below.

New Shadowhunters Season 3 Premiere Date And More Revealed
Hey, "Shadowhunters" fans. It's time to let you guys know when you can expect to see the brand new season 3 finally premiere! Recently, the folks over at TV Line revealed this vital information. They said the season 3 premiere date was revealed at the recent New York Comic-Con event earlier this month. With no further ado, you guys can expect to see the new season 3 finally debut on April 3rd,2018. So, be sure to mark that very important date down on your TV calendars. It is unclear why Freeform opted to premiere the 3rd season much later than it did the first two seasons. They previously premiered in January of 2016 and 2017. Our best guess is that they just simply wanted to bump them up to the Spring. It could have something to do with the ratings being better during that time of year or something technical like that. TV shows are a business for networks.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Once Upon a Time, NCIS, Empire and Arrow!

1 | How is Once Upon a Time‘s Henry keeping his motorcycle fueled after years in the Enchanted Forest? (Seems like a throwaway line about Regina “enchanting” his gas tank would have sufficed.) And is Roni’s bar situated on a hill… or not?

2 | Has Inhumans elicited a bigger groan than when Medusa commanded an Atm to give money to “the queen of Attilan”?

3 | Was Outlander...
