Pennyworth: Emma Paetz Reacts to Shocking Season 3 Finale
Emma Paetz
Pennyworth concluded its shocking third season on HBO Max last week, and we're still trying to process the ending.

Just when it seemed like all of the focal characters had found some semblance of happiness, a bomb seemingly decimated London, setting the stage for a very different fourth season.

TV Fanatic got the chance to chat with Emma Paetz, who plays Martha Wayne on the Batman prequel series.

Check out the interview below.

It's been a rough season for Martha and Thomas, but they ended things on a positive note. Did you expect that to happen?

I never quite know where the scripts are going. I'm really bad at predicting, but yeah, I agree with you that they do end, I think, kind of stronger and more solid in their relationship than we've sort of ever seen them be actually out of like a huge period of tension.

We saw...

Emma Paetz Looks Back On Martha Kane's Journey In Pennyworth Season 3
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Pennyworth season 3Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler season 3 just concluded its HBO Max run this week, leaving viewers in a chaotic yet festive mood. The infamous future butler Alfred (Jack Bannon) tied the knot with his on-and-off girlfriend Sandra in between saving PWEs (People With Enhancements) from experimentation and the entirety of London from a drug-induced mental health crisis, although a sudden airstrike may render the previous festivities null. Meanwhile, Martha (Emma Paetz) and Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) manage to patch up their rocky marriage after a season of lies and half-truths, starting over as a family.

Pennyworth season 3 underwent several changes when it moved to HBO Max, including both a name change and a five-year time jump. The latter is the most important, given that it gave Martha and Thomas a daughter to take care of and added tension to the dangerous situations they often find themselves in.

HBO Max’s ‘Pennyworth’ Shows Best Way to Rethink IP
Image
“Pennyworth” isn’t exactly the same show in Season 3 that it was during the opening two years of its run on the soon-to-be-rebranded Epix. What began as a well-executed thought experiment — “What if Batman’s kindly caretaker was a Bond-style government contractor when he was in his twenties?” — has gradually morphed into something different. The opening credits theme has sanded off a bit of its orchestral flair, the show now has the unwieldy subtitle “The Origin of Batman’s Butler,” and the London surrounding its main character is absorbing more and more “Mad Men” pastels by the episode.

Yet, with all those changes, “Pennyworth” is the rare bright spot amid a litany of baffling-to-fatal decisions for HBO Max in 2022 (a list that got longer and graver just in the last few days). The streaming service that at its debut seemed like a home for some its namesake’s spirit of...

Pennyworth Season 3 Is A Super Dramatic Season For Batman's Parents [Nycc]
Image
Did you know that Batman's famous and devout Butler, Alfred Pennyworth, has his own spy show on HBO Max (after airing on Epix) from the creators of "Gotham"? And it's on season 3? Maybe the recent extended retitling of "Pennyworth" to "Pennyworth: The Origins of Batman's Butler" could alert you to that.

In 1960s London with alternative sameish-but-different history, former British Sas soldier, Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) sought to found his own security company. He later ends up working for young billionaire Thomas Wayne. In season 2, Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) marries Martha Kane (Emma Paetz) and she gives birth to their daughter (in a curveball for Batman fans who were expecting to see Bruce Wayne sooner). Last season, a civil war ended, and season 3 is making a five-year time jump into the '70s.

‘Pennyworth’ Creator On DC Drama’s Move From Epix To HBO Max: “Platforms Matter”
Image
Bruno Heller has a funny way — quite literally — of describing the move of Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler from Epix to HBO Max.

First, imagine you’re in a grocery store and on the hunt for, ahem, something tasty to enjoy. “Years ago, people had very few choices. Now it’s much more like a supermarket,” explains Heller, who created the DC drama that stars Jack Bannon in the title role. “I don’t mean to be crass about this, but you’re on a shelf and where you are on the shelf becomes very important in a way that it wasn’t before. So platforms matter. We are just very excited to be in the center aisle, in the middle of shelf, next to the cornflakes instead of up there with the maple honey granola with soy granules in it. All of those cereals have an audience,...

‘Pennyworth’ Moves From Epix To HBO Max With Season 3 Renewal
Image
HBO Max has closed a deal to bring DC origin series Pennyworth to its platform for a third season.

The series, which aired for two seasons on Epix, has been renewed for a third season and will make the move to the WarnerMedia digital platform in 2022.

It comes after Deadline revealed that Pennyworth producer Warner Bros. TV was in talks to bring the show over to its sibling streamer. The deal also includes the first two seasons of the Batman butler prequel launching on the service early next year.

Deadline understands that Epix will get a second window, per the deal.

The move, announced at the DC Fandome event, is not a huge as the MGM-owned cable network has been trimming its slate of scripted originals and the show premiered before the studio launched its own streaming service. It will join other DC titles such as Titans, Doom Patrol and Peacemaker on HBO Max.

‘Pennyworth’ Moves to HBO Max for Season 3
Image
“Pennyworth,” the DC Comics drama revolving around the early years of Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred, is moving to HBO Max for its third season.

The series produced by Warner Bros. Television aired for its first two seasons on Epix, the pay cabler owned by MGM. But now that HBO Max is the center of the WarnerMedia universe, it had long been expected that “Pennyworth” would jump to the in-house platform for Season 3. HBO Max has ordered 10 episodes.

The first two seasons of “Pennyworth” will become available on HBO Max early next year. There’s no word on a Season 3 premiere date beyond next year.

The series stars Jack Bannon as Alfred Pennyworth, a former special forces soldier in the British military who initially goes to work for Bruce Wayne’s father, Thomas Wayne, in 1960s London.

As part of Saturday’s live-streamed “DC FanDome” promotional event, Warner Bros. TV...

Review: Pennyworth: The Complete Second Season
Image
It’s pretty impressive that Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, who twisted Gotham into a funhouse mirror image of the comic book source material, got invited to do it a second time with their Epix series Pennyworth, purportedly the origins of Alfred. But which Alfred? And for which version of Batman?

Pennyworth: The Complete Second Season, with Covid-19 interruptions, finally arrived at the end of 2020 and is now available on a two-disc Blu-ray set from Warner Archive. You can decide for yourself if the series needed its connections to the Batman mythos, needed to exist at all or is entertaining. As with Gotham, the chaotic and uneven storytelling continues here in this weird, alternate reality of the world.

While it looks like the 1960s, the politics of England is decided more fascistic, and lots of secret organizations are having a secret war with the kingdom’s fate at stake.

As Pennyworth opened Season 2, the good news was that Thomas Wayne survived being shot at the close of Season 1. But he may be wishing differently given lady friend Martha Kane’s reaction to the news that during his return Stateside, he got engaged.

That rockblock arrived on top of the couple’s argument about Thomas’ CIA staying neutral when it comes to the civil war led by Lord Harwood’s neo-fascist Raven Union. So all told, tough times ahead for those who one day (soon) shall conceive a future Batman.

Pennyworth's Jack Bannon Previews Alfred's Season 2 Plan, His Patricidal Guilt and James Purefoy's 'Dark' Role
Image
Alfred Pennyworth has his sights set on America — but first, he and his mates will have to navigate all sorts of civil strife in England, while juggling the very odd job to pay for their passage.

When last we tuned in, the titular former British Sas soldier (played by Jack Bannon) had to gun down his own dad, Arthur — a secret member of the government-overthrowing Raven Society — though the tragic trigger-pulling proved fruitless in foiling a mad bomber plot targeting British bigwigs.

Pennyworth Season 2 Trailer Sets December Release Date
Pennyworth (2019)
Pennyworth Season 2 is coming soon to Epix, continuing to fulfill the show’s touted remit as a prequel to the Batman mythos, notably with Alfred’s eventual arrival in Gotham City.

Having debuted on July 28, 2019, Pennyworth is the product of creator/executive producer/writer Bruno Heller and executive producer/director Danny Cannon (CSI franchise), and served as a quick reunion of key personnel from another Batman prequel series, Fox’s Gotham, which had just ended its five-season run that April. However, any associations end there, since Pennyworth is set in London in the 1960s, therefore—after doing some quick math—eliminating the notion of any continuity connection with the contemporary-set Gotham. Indeed, Pennyworth turned out to be a colorful crime series with swinging ‘60s aesthetics and a slightly over-the-top charm that’s not bound by its nevertheless-looming pre-Batman status.

The first teaser trailer for Pennyworth’s second season is here,...

‘Pennyworth’ Season 2 Plot Reveal: Thomas Wayne Gets Engaged – But Not to Martha Kane (Video)
Ben Aldridge
“Pennyworth” may have set in motion the birth of baby Bruce Wayne — but not before his dad gets engaged to a woman that’s not Bruce’s mother.

Ben Aldridge, who plays a young Thomas Wayne in Epix’s “Batman” prequel series, just dropped a major hint about the state of his and Martha Kane’s (Emma Paetz) relationship at the beginning of Season 2 when it premieres this December… and it’s certainly not what we expected.

“I think I can say this — he comes back into Episode 1 engaged to someone else, so that’s a massive curveball,” Aldridge revealed during a New York Comic-Con virtual panel on Sunday. “It’s kind of a curveball for both of them. He didn’t expect that either. That’s where they start off, and then it all unfolds from there.”

That said, there’s still going to be “a lot of tension...

‘The Batman,’ ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ Previews Part of Massive DC Fandome Schedule
Image
Speed and star-power: Those are the two clear goals for the DC Fandome virtual event on Aug. 22, which released its full schedule Friday.

Over 100 hours of content stretching across the film, TV and comic book properties from DC Entertainment will unfold over a 24-hour period on the Saturday event, including panels featuring the filmmakers and casts of “The Batman,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” “The Suicide Squad” and the Snyder Cut of “Justice League,” and the casts of TV series including “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “Batwoman,” “Black Lightning” and “The Flash.”

Most of those panels, however, will run just 15 to 30 minutes in length. The panel for the upcoming feature film version of “The Flash,” with filmmakers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, star Ezra Miller, and screenwriter Christina Hodson, will clock in at a speedy 10 minutes.
