Screen Rant is proud to present a first look at the poster for the upcoming documentary Once Upon a Time in Uganda, along with an exclusive clip from the movie. Directed by Cathryne Czubek, Once Upon a Time in Uganda follows a brickmaker who turns into an Internet sensation thanks to his proclivity for action movies. After debuting at DocNYC in 2021, the US rights to the fascinating documentary were acquired by Yellow Veil Pictures and Drafthouse Films.

The subjects of Once Upon a Time in Uganda are filmmaker Isaac Nabwana and film fanatic Alan Hofmanis, who become friends from across the globe due to their love of Chuck Norris and '80s action adventures. Through Isaac's unique comedic taste and penchant for onscreen explosions, the small film studio of Wakaliwood became internationally renowned. Exclusive: Yellow Veil Pictures and Drafthouse Films have co-acquired North American rights to the documentary Cathryne Czubek’s documentary Once Upon A Time Uganda.

The work revolves around the unlikely friendship between Uganda’s answer to Quentin Tarantino, filmmaker Isaac Nabwana, and American film programmer Alan Hofmanis, who moves to the East African country to collaborate on his films.

Against the backdrop of Wakaliga, a slum in Uganda’s capital of Kampala, the pair unite over their shared love of Chuck Norris and gonzo 80’s action flicks and ambitions to catapult ‘Wakaliwood’ to international stardom.

The film was originally due to world premiere at the canceled 2020 edition of SXSW but then debuted at DocNYC, where it won the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Competition.

The distributors are planning a theatrical release with an exclusive week run with Alamo Drafthouse theaters starting July 4th before expanding to additional markets.

Festival runs September 29-October 1.

Maridueña will receive the Arbol de la Vida Trailblazer Award on opening night for his achievements as an actor, breaking down barriers, and inspiring the next generation of Latin talent. He has played the lead in Netflix series Cobra Kai for the last five seasons.

UK sales and distribution outfit Blue Finch Films has boarded worldwide rights to the documentary Once Upon A Time In Uganda, which is set to have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest next month.

Set in the slums of Uganda, the film follows two men from opposite sides of the world who comes together over a shared love for Chuck Norris. Isaac, a former brick maker in Uganda, decides to pick up a camera and start shooting his own ‘80s inspired action epics, and Alan, a film nerd from New York gives up his life in America to join forces with Isaac after seeing a trailer for one of his films online. The pair end up finding internet fame with their work from ‘Wakaliwood’.

Cathryne Czubek directed, wrote and produced the movie. Amanda Hughes was co-writer. Gigi Dement, Matt Porwoll and Hugo Perez co-produced; the latter also co-directed.

“This was going to a transformative event, and with the cancellation, the filmmakers were left stranded and scrambling.”

SXSW film head Janet Pierson said on Friday (13) that despite the cancellation of the physical festival, staff will ensure all of this year’s competition sections can be judged via screener links.

At time of writing Screen understands almost every filmmaker in every section including the 10 narrative feature and 10 documentary feature competition categories had opted into the plan. Only one filmmaker of a short had not opted in and at time of writing organisers were waiting to hear back from the teams behind two high school shorts.

SXSW Film Festival has announced it’s initial lineup of feature films, documentaries, episodic television premieres, and special events. This year’s opening film is Judd Apatow's The King of Staten Island. Although there are many outstanding films in this massive announcement, films of particular interest to ScreenAnarchy readers include: Cathryne Czubek and Hugo Perez’s Wakaliwood documentary Lights Camera Uganda; RZA’s Cut Throat City; Amy Seimetz's She Dies Tomorrow; Spike Jonze’s Beastie Boys Story; and The Show from director Mitch Jenkins and writer Alan Moore. In this new featurette, actor Christian Kane talks about his character (Mark Allen) in the upcoming 50 To 1. Based on Mine That Bird, the underdog racehorse that won the 2009 Kentucky Derby, the film opens in theaters March 21, 2014.

Two songs from Kane’s The House Rules (2010) album – “Something’s Gotta’ Give” and “Whiskey in Mind” – are featured in the 50 To 1 soundtrack.

The cast and filmmakers of 50 To 1 will hit the road rock-star style on a cross-country tour beginning March 17 to promote the major motion picture’s release.

Cast members set for the tour are Skeet Ulrich, Christian Kane, Todd Lowe and Hugo Perez.Also on tour will be filmmakers Jim Wilson and Faith Conroy. As a very special treat – the real Mine That Bird will make special appearances along the way.

Gardner (Joseph Mazzello, Jurassic Park) is a socially awkward, 25-year-old mail carrier in the indie romantic comedy Dear Sidewalk.  He keeps to a usual routine which includes a postal route walking through Austin neighborhoods, a daily chat with sarcastic retiree Trudy (Lana Dieterich) and weekly meetings with his small philatelic club. This stamp-collecting group is made up of his postal service co-workers (Davi Jay, Hugo Perez  and C. K. McFarland) who encourage him to get out more. Meanwhile, he sleeps in a boat in front of his best pal Calvin's (Josh Fadem, 30 Rock) house.
