Clint Eastwood May Have Broken the Western, But Kevin Costner’s 35 Year Old Movie Did Something Better
Image
Clint Eastwood has always reigned over the landscape of American western cinema with an iron fist. His memorable portrayal of earnest cowboys of few words was unrivaled until Kevin Costner made an equally grand entry to spice up the movies from the wild west.

While we are not going into the debate regarding who should be crowned the undisputed king of the Hollywood Westerns, Costner, in Dances With Wolves, did something which even Eastwood’s mystical thespian abilities failed to match. No, we are not talking about who is the better director between the two, but rather we are trying to point out how Costner’s cinematic poetry aided in resuscitating a dying genre by breathing a fresh lease of life.

Kevin Costner revived the Westerns with Dances With Wolves, after the dismal 1980s

For the last century or so, Western cinema charmed a major section of the cinema-goers’ imagination.

10 Classic Western Movies Perfectly Suited For A Modern Remake
Image
For as long as cinema has existed, the Western has been prevalent and at the forefront of new developments in cinematic storytelling. From editing to camera to story, as film has evolved, so has the western. With a long history of amazing Westerns dating back to even before The Great Train Robbery in 1903, there comes a great deal of both triumphs and failures. These often range from an innocent crime such as poor pacing to malicious ones such as the treatment of Native Americans. This leaves more than enough projects on the table and ready for re-imagining.

Unfortunately, in our current cinematic landscape, the western has fallen out of favor as a more dated genre. This perspective ignores the ways in which modern westerns have been able to subvert and contradict their predecessors in a highly fruitful manner. The Coen brothers' True Grit exemplified this and managed to succeed as...

Clint Eastwood proves again that he Owns the western genre with this odd tale of land reform insurrection and establishment blowback, in New Mexico of 1906. To direct the script by the great Elmore Leonard, Eastwood brought in the western movie legend John Sturges. But Sturges discovered that collaboration now meant acceding to whatever the star wanted. The beautifully filmed movie falls apart even though Sturges saved the day with an 11th hour stunt action climax.

Drive-In Dust Offs: Help Me… I’M Possessed (1974)
They’re there. Just when you’ve given up hope of finding shining fecal matter at the bottom of the filmic pool, one catches your eye with a title alone. And when you crack open the fetid artifact and find it filled with everything you’ve wanted and more, well, it’s cause for celebration. Welcome to Help Me…I’m Possessed, a whack-a-doodle mélange of Al Adamson, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Mad Scientist flicks, and a heaping dose of insanity. It isn’t good, but it sure is wonderful.

Premiering in October in Orlando, Florida, Help Me (Aka Nightmare at Blood Castle) was given a limited theatrical release in ’76, followed by a brief life on video as The Possessed in the ‘80s. No matter which format you didn’t see it in back then these are different times, and even an obscure oddity like this gets a fancy Blu-ray to be preserved forever.

Writer/director Shawn Burkett is probably best known to genre fans as the man behind Don’t F*ck in the Woods, a film whose very title struck a chord with horror audiences for its sheer audacity. After all, having sex in the woods is a Clear...

Polish Film Festival, "Y.M.I." Gdynia, Poland 2004.
Veteran character actor Paul Koslo, known for his work in films such as The Omega Man and Vanishing Point, has died. Koslo died January 9 of pancreatic cancer surrounded by family at his home in Lake Hughes, California, his family said in a statement. He was 74.

Koslo, born in Germany and raised in Canada, began his career in his early 20s with a role in Little White Crimes, a short, in 1966. In the 1970s, he established a foothold as an actor in cult films such as Nam’s Angels aka The Losers, referenced in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, along with Vanishing Point and The Stone Killer. While he became known for more villainous roles, he appeared in an unusually

sympathetic co-starring role opposite Charlton Heston in sci-fi cult classic The Omega Man.

Elmore Leonard obituary
Crime writer known for Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Hombre whose work served as a barometer of modern America

When Elmore Leonard's Stick was published in Britain in 1984, one newspaper called it "a fine first novel". At almost 60, the author would have been amused at such an accolade; it was, in fact, his 21st novel, and Leonard, who has died aged 87, had been selling his fiction regularly, occasionally to Hollywood. But the genres in which he chose to work often failed to attract serious critical attention: westerns first, then crime novels set in the contemporary urban hinterlands.

Westerns as a literary genre still lack respectability, but the craft and energy of Leonard's crime novels, which include Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Labrava, eventually made them impossible to ignore. Still, recognition came late: only in 1992 did the Mystery Writers of America grant him its highest accolade, the Grand Master Edgar.

Old School Werewolf Film “Autumn Moon” in Pre-Production
We at FM like to keep our eyes on independent horror films, especially one’s done the classic, old school way, and Randy Fabert’s upcoming Autumn Moon fits the bill. Writer and director Randy Fabert (Psycho Killer) is in pre-production on the werewolf thriller from Skylar Phoenix Productions. Fabert hopes that Autumn Moon will be ”the most violent werewolf movie ever made” and hopes to capture the greatness of other classic werewolf films like The Wolf Man and An American Werewolf In London and the massive amount of carnage and terror that such a monster would cause.

Skylar Phoenix sent us a plot synopsis, as follows:

Pulp writer Michael Renee Allen thought the house on the edge of the woods would be the perfect place to write his next novel. He soon finds that the forest has more to offer than just fresh air and a nice view. Something unspeakable is stalking the forest.

Production Beginning Soon on New Werewolf Thriller Autumn Moon
Vampires had a nice run, and zombies are the current flavor of the week. Instead of reimagining the monsters everyone is onto now, wouldn't it make sense to try to hit the next big wave early? Filmmaker Randy Fabert is howling right that way with Autumn Moon.

Fabert says he hopes to make Autumn Moon "…the most violent werewolf movie ever made." That's setting some lofty goals, but as gore fans we say go for it! Fabert's first film, Psycho Killer, will be touring festivals this fall.

Written, directed and featuring Fabert, Autumn Moon also stars Joe Kidd (That's What She Said), Nathan Grauwelman (Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies), Iabou Windimere (Psycho Killer), Jocelyn Tanis (The Medal), Larry Combs, Gerri Sutyak (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Sonny Burnette (Zombies R Friends) and Richard Aughpin (Architect of Chaos). The werewolf make-up effects will be created by Fabert's Postmortem Efx Studio. Michael Spivey co-wrote the screenplay.
