“Dunkirk” Warner Bros.

One of Christopher Nolan’s very best films, “Dunkirk” is best described as a historical thriller. The film recounts the true World War II story of how the allied troops in Dunkirk were evacuated by sea in a harrowing event. Nolan splits the film up into three timelines – what’s happening on the beach, the boats coming in by sea, and the planes in the air above trying to provide support.

Barack Obama Gives Drake The Greenlight To Portray Him In Future Biopic
Image
Barack Obama didn’t exactly say it was “God’s Plan” to have Drake portray him in a biopic. But he gave it his stamp of approval.

The former president, speaking in an interview on Complex’s 360 With Speedy Morman, said he wouldn’t mind if Drake got the part in any future feature. “I will say this, Drake seems to be able to do anything he wants. I mean, that is a talented, talented brother. So, if the time comes and he’s ready…”

Asked by Morman if Drake has his “stamp of approval,” Obama said, “Drake has, more importantly I think, my household’s stamp of approval. I suspect Malia and Sasha would be just fine with it.”

Drake wouldn’t be the first to portray Obama. He’s already been represented by Kingsley Ben-Adir on The Comey Rule via Showtime. Parker Sawyers also portrayed the former U.

‘Chemical Hearts’ Review: Lili Reinhart and Austin Abrams Headline a Superficially Sensitive Teen Romance
Image
The MPAA has long placed teen movies in a tricky bind: When they reflect the lives of their young target audience a little too relatably, they’re slapped with a rating that excludes the very demographic they’re about. It’s an irony that corners too many films in the genre into a safely sanitized PG-13 space, clean and cute and not entirely real. That “Chemical Hearts” has bitten the bullet and accepted an R initially bodes well: Unafraid of depicting casual teenage swearing, drug-taking and modest sexual activity, Richard Tanne’s melancholic, tastefully presented romance promises a more mature, impressionistic take on standard adolescent rites of passage. It’s going out on Amazon Prime, after all: Who’s going to keep the kids away?

Yet for all its serious-faced surface grit, “Chemical Hearts” never quite rings true. There’s a lot of solemn pondering here on the disorienting nature of so-called “teenage limbo,...

Chemical Hearts – Review
Image
Chemical Hearts premieres on Amazon Prime August 21st

Review by Stephen Tronicek

The characters are far too mature in Chemical Hearts and that is both good and bad. It is the type of film that young people, including my twenty-one year old self, can step into to watch people our age philosophize and make better decisions than we ever could. On one hand, this is a little condescending. On the other hand, isn’t all wish-fulfillment. As far as these films go, Chemical Hearts manages itself better than most and calls to mind some strange intertextual connections and could prove interesting to both its target audience and the adults around them.

Chemical Hearts follows the budding romance of Henry and Grace, two students who are part of their school’s journalism program. While their romance is initially easy, past traumas start to separate them.

The plot elements of Chemical Hearts...

‘Chemical Hearts’ Director Says Teen Romance Isn’t a Typical Ya Film
Image
Don’t call “Chemical Hearts” a Ya romance?

True, on paper, the story of a precocious teenager named Henry who becomes emotionally entangled with Grace, a psychologically wounded young woman, sounds very much in the vein of “The Fault in Our Stars” or “Looking for Alaska.” But Richard Tanne, the film’s writer and director, said that what drew him to “Chemical Hearts” was its underlining sense of melancholy and its willingness to deconstruct certain cliches of the genre.

The film, which begins streaming on Amazon Prime on Aug. 21, marks Tanne’s followup to 2016’s “Southside With You,” a romantic drama that received acclaim for the audacity with which it imagined Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date. The movie marked Tanne’s directorial debut. His sophomore effort adapts Krystal Sutherland’s novel “Our Chemical Hearts” and stars Austin Abrams (“Euphoria”) as Henry and Lili Reinhart (“Riverdale”) as Grace. Tanne...

Chemical Hearts Review
Richard Tanne
Written and directed by Richard Tanne, Chemical Hearts is based on the book Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland. The film sees Lili Reinhart (Riverdale and Hustlers) as Grace Town and Austin Abrams as Henry Page, with Reinhart also serving as an executive producer alongside Sutherland and Jamin O’Brien.

Chemical Hearts is a story about Henry Page, a 17-year-old high school student who has his eye on becoming the next Editor-in chief of his school newspaper. His life seems ‘normal’, mundane and simple. However, he believes he is a hopeless romantic even though he’s never actually been in love before. One day he meets transfer student Grace Town, and from the get go, you know she has a story to tell, with her quietness and the resilience she has for keeping personal information just that – personal. They are automatically drawn to each other with their love and passion for literature,...

Lili Reinhart opens up on debut as producer
Lili Reinhart
Los Angeles, Aug 20 (Ians) Actress Lili Reinhart has turned producer, and she says she loved the experience because it gave her a chance to build something from ground up.

Reinhart has executive-produced the upcoming film "Chemical Hearts", where she stars with Austin Abrams. The film is based on the novel "Our Chemical Hearts" by Krystal Sutherland.

"I loved helping to build something from the ground up. Being an executive producer meant I was incredibly involved from the very beginning, to make sure that this project came together in the best way that it could," Reinhart said.

"When (writer-director) Rich (Richard Tanne) and I met, we really clicked. It was very cool to realise we had the same vision for the movie. We both wanted the movie to have the depth and tone that the book has," she added.

"Chemical Hearts" is about a hopelessly romantic high school senior, who falls for a mysterious new classmate.

Austin Abrams and Lili Reinhart in Chemical Hearts (2020)
Chemical Hearts – Lili Reinhart says “It’s boring to see another perfect girl in a movie”
Austin Abrams and Lili Reinhart in Chemical Hearts (2020)
A heart-wrenching story of first love, loss and a journey of self-discovery, Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming film Chemical Hearts, will strike a chord among all teen-dramas. Starring Lili Reinhart as Grace Town and Austin Abrams as Henry Page in the lead, the coming of age film aims to capture the thrills, disappointments and confusion of being a teenager.

Speaking of having to play a different character from her previous roles, the Riverdale famed actress Lili Reinhart says, “I loved that it was not what you expect when talking about a teen love story. It seemed a lot deeper than many other young adult romances out there. It’s more raw and grounded in grief.

Stephenie Meyer at an event for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
Chemical Hearts review – elaborately contrived Ya tale of young love
Stephenie Meyer at an event for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 (2011)
A high-school story tackling a complex and painful relationship with familiar tropes riddled with cliche

The Ya genre has evolved in an eerie parallel-world to high school comedies, a solemn Jekyll to comedy’s Hyde. The latter are mostly more accurate, insightful and compassionate about what being young is actually like – and the real-world Ya feels to me insipid compared with the fantasies of Stephenie Meyer. Here is another in the young-adult style, with its familiar tics and tropes, directed by Richard Tanne (who gave us the likable Obama first date drama Southside With You) and adapted by him from Krystal Sutherland’s bestseller.

‘Chemical Hearts’ Review: Lili Reinhart and Austin Abrams Shine in a Ya Romance for Extra Sensitive Teens
Image
Soft boys, assemble! since February’s “All the Bright Places” has finally arrived, and it is not holding back. This movie has it all: An affluent teenage introvert who’s desperately waiting for something interesting to happen to him, a mysterious blonde transfer student named Grace Town(!) whose pronounced limp suggests a tragic past, a wistful voiceover track laced with pearls of wisdom like “you are never more alive than when you’re a teenager,” a queer Black best friend character who spends the whole film making out with her girlfriend in the background, so much Beach House on the soundtrack that you can practically feel the sand between your toes (one of the band’s songs even becomes a plot point), and an overreliance on a flimsy metaphor that’s meant to trigger some kind of profound understanding — in this case, the idea that heartbreak causes the same bodily response as physical pain.

Chemical Hearts Review: A Moving Portrait of Young Love
Austin Abrams and Lili Reinhart in Chemical Hearts (2020)
Set some time away this weekend to watch Chemical Hearts on Amazon Prime.

Starring Lili Reinhart (who also executive produces) and Austin Abrams, the movie follows young love at its most beautiful and most painful.

"You're never more alive than when you're a teenager," the trailer posits. "Your brain is flush with chemicals that can turn your life into a story of epic proportions." But by the start of his senior year, nothing wonderful had happened to Henry Page (Abrams).

It's the kind of magic on which teenagers for millennia have used as they search for their own epic stories. It can be as damning to a young soul as it is freeing to imagine there is a big world out there, but you're not yet a part of it.

Henry has looked forward to his last year in high school for the chance to edit the school paper, a...

Obama at the Movies: How a Decade of Movies Reflected Hope and Change Before Anticipating Donald Trump — Critic’s Notebook
Donald Trump
In 2015, when Vikram Gandhi was making a movie about Barack Obama’s college years in New York, the filmmaker knew the finished product would arrive at a bigger sweet moment. “We didn’t have the same optimism that much of the country had when he was running,” said Gandhi.

Yet the result, a lively take on the actor’s experiences at Colombia in the early eighties now available on Netflix, speaks to the zeitgeist even more than Gandhi could have anticipated. In “Barry,” a disillusioned Obama (Devon Terrell) grapples with his racial identity while dating a white classmate (Anya Taylor-Joy) and examining the country’s economic disparities at the height of Ronald Reagan’s conservative government.

With Terrell’s subtle performance as its guide, “Barry” provides a keen window into the national mood among many young progressive Americans some 30 years ago, but it also picks up on echoes of those...

Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers in Southside with You (2016)
‘Barry’ Trailer: Young Barack Obama Comes of Age in Netflix Drama — Watch
Tika Sumpter and Parker Sawyers in Southside with You (2016)
Step aside, “Southside With You,” there’s another fictionalized feature film about the life and times of young, pre-presidency Barack Obama on the way. Vikram Gandhi’s “Barry” takes place a few years before Richard Tanne’s recent release, which focused on the budding romance between twenty-something Barack and his future wife Michelle, but looks to dig into a just as essential time period in the eventual leader of the free world’s life.

“Barry” is set during the fall of 1981, when Obama — “Barry” to his friends — arrived in New York City to begin his junior year at Columbia University. Billed as a “nuanced, artistic exploration of a pivotal year in the life” of Obama, the film follows young Obama as he begins to grow into the person and politician he was meant to be, all set against the backdrop of a vibrant city and culture.

Barry Trailer: Netflix’s Barack Obama Biopic Finds The Future Potus In College
Two months ago, Richard Tanne’s poignant drama Southside With You chronicled the formative years of Barack Obama and his relationship with budding lawyer Michelle Robinson, who would later go on to become the First Lady of the United States. With Barry, Netflix is primed to turn back the clock further still, focusing on Obama’s life at Columbia University circa 1981.

Following a premiere at Tiff earlier in the year, the online streamer has now rolled out the first trailer for the upcoming biopic, placing Devon Terrell in the role of the future Potus. Vikram Gandhi is the director behind the lens, and this simple, stylish teaser captures the spirit of Obama’s college years without so much as a single line of dialogue. All in all, it’s a provocative peek into the archives, as Barry tackles issues of crime, a fractured nuclear family and racial discrimination just as...
