Russian Producer Artem Vasilyev Launches Dublin-Based Label Lazy Sunday, Unveils Slate of Projects Including New Kirill Sokolov Feature (Exclusive)
Image
Artem Vasilyev, the Russian producer and CEO of Metrafilms and its animation arm Studio Metrafilms, has launched the new label Lazy Sunday, based in Ireland and dedicated to developing and producing both animation and live-action projects for international audiences.

The new outfit will serve as a bridge linking Western Europe with Eastern Europe, Vasilyev hopes, while also connecting with his current base of operations in Moldova.

“I strongly believe that the Eastern European region is extremely rich in world-class talent and exciting stories that are yet to be told,” he said. “Eastern European talent can bring a lot to the international film industry table, and Lazy Sunday is a company that can bridge East and West thanks to our experience, history and where we are today. This is truly an exciting position to be in.”

Lazy Sunday, which will have an office in Dublin, is actually the rebranded Irish arm of Film and Music Entertainment,...

The Humorist (2019)
Transylvania Film Review: ‘The Humorist’
The Humorist (2019)
Screenwriter Michael Idov makes an impressive directing debut with the super-smart, confidently lensed “The Humorist.” Set in the waning days of the Soviet Union when decadence and repression went hand-in-hand, the film is a portrait of a comedian whose intellect becomes a burden when he can’t adapt himself to the increasingly heavy chains of expectation and censorship. Idov’s exceptionally clever dialogue is matched with a sharp understanding of structure, culminating in a terrific bathhouse scene with more than casual nods not just to “Julius Caesar” but to the whole fall of the Roman Empire. Released earlier this year in the territories of its its production companies, “The Humorist” is oddly only now finding festival berths.

Boris Arkadiev didn’t set out to be a comedian, but his novel flopped and he found a lucrative career doing stand-up throughout the Ussr. Success hasn’t brought him happiness, as a...

Berlin: M-appeal Picks Up ‘The Humorist,’ Directed by ‘Leto’ Writer (Exclusive)
Berlin-based sales agent M-appeal has picked up the rights to black comedy “The Humorist,” directed by Michael Idov, one of the scriptwriters of “Leto,” a competition title at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

“The Humorist,” which makes its market premiere at Berlin’s European Film Market on Feb. 8, stars Aleksey Agranovich, Alisa Khazanova and Yuri Kolokolnikov. It is produced by Metrafilms’ Artem Vasilyev, who was one of the producers on Alexey German Jr.’s “Dovlatov,” a competition title at last year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Set in the mid-80s in the Soviet Union, “The Humorist” revolves around Boris Arkadiev, a Russian-Jewish stand-up comedian who is tormented not only by external oppression and censorship, but also by his own insecurities. Fame and the lack of personal freedom contribute to his unbalanced state of mind. When the leaders who dictate what he can and can’t joke about summon him to their villa,...

Middleground (2017)
Russia's Indie Vision inks deals on first Efm slate
Middleground (2017)
Exclusive: Company scores sales on titles inlcuding Middleground, Petersburg, A Selfie, and Aestetik.

Fledgling Russian sales outfit Indie Vision, the arthouse label of Moscow-based Russian World Vision, has announced deals on its inaugural European Film Market (Efm) slate.

These include a multi-picture deal with Chinese outfit Hugoeast.

That agreement includes Alisa Khazanova’s romantic drama Middleground starring Noah Huntley, and Guillaume Protsenko’s Moscow-based thriller Wake Me Up.

Also on Indie Vision’s inaugural Efm slate (and already sold to Hugoeast) is Petersburg, A Selfie, a seven-story portmanteau pic set in St Petersburg and with seven female directors helming each segment. It is described as an anthology film in the vein of Paris, I Love You. One of the producers is Sergey Selyanov (Brother, Mongol).

Indie Vision has closed an unusual deal with Al-Jazeera on its animated short Listening To Beethoven, directed by legendary Russian animator Garry Bardin. The film screened in the Cannes Quinzaine.

Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2015: #43. Vasiliy Sigarev’s Interesting Ethology
Interesting Ethology

Director: Vasiliy Sigarev // Writers: Andrey Ilenkov, Vasiliy Sigarev

Still struggling to break free from the confines of the festival circuit, up and coming Russian director Vasiliy Sigarev (pictured above) has premiered his first two films to critical acclaim. His 2009 debut Wolfy played at Karlovy Vary and his excellent 2012 sophomore film, Living premiered at Rotterdam. Also a noted writer, Sigarev’s first two films are pronounced slices of miserablism, which may explain the lack of international distribution, which is unfortunate. His latest, Interesting Ethology, is apparently a comedy. Plot details are limited, but apparently a cut was shown to attract distributors at the Russian Pavilion back at Cannes 2014. Several cast members have notable credits, such as Yuriy Kutsenko, who appeared in two Timur Bekmambetov films, while Yuliya Snigir was featured in A Good Day to Die Hard (2013).

Cast: Yuliya Snigir, Alisa Khazanova, Yuriy Kutsenko

Exclusive Interview: Producers Simon Oakes and Nigel Sinclair Talk Hammer Horror and More for The Woman in Black
In honor of CBS Films' upcoming release of The Woman in Black in Us theaters tomorrow, February 3rd, Dread Central recently had the opportunity to chat with two producers on the latest out of the Hammer horror stable, Simon Oakes and Nigel Sinclair.

Both Oakes and Sinclair were integral to the relaunch of Hammer Films in 2010. Sinclair, the Co-Chairman and CEO of Exclusive Media, came on board Hammer as a non-executive director in 2007 after his other production studio, Spitfire, locked in a first-look development and production pact with the newly revived British horror studio at the same time.

During our interview with Sinclair and Oakes, Dread chatted with the pair about Hammer's legacy of horror, their thoughts on The Woman in Black...

Exclusive Interview with Daniel Radcliffe - The Woman in Black
As the frost of winter puts a chills our spines, The Woman in Black aims to do the same. Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel, this is the second ghostly retelling produced this time by the legendary Hammer Film Productions—the same production house that brought many of our beloved genre classics staring the greats: Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Taking the lead role this time is Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame. Dread Central was allowed a candid glimpse into Radcliffe’s method, desire to direct; as well as his thoughts on being in his first horror film and what it took to exude the “darkness” he needed.

Heather Buckley: Tell me about The Woman In Black.

Daniel Radcliffe: It’s a film about a young lawyer; his wife has died, he has become more and more disconnected from the world around him, his son, his life and his job,...
