Sometimes the attempt to share a new, improved life with the ones they love can ultimately put people’s own existences in danger. New Trailer for Sci-Fi '2149: The Aftermath' Set in a Digital Future
"We have to be cautious, we have to stay out of sight..." 4Digital Media has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi film Canada called 2149: The Aftermath, formerly known as Confinement. The premise is similar to Ready Player One - in the future, everyone lives in tiny pods and everyone connects online - no one ever goes outside. One night, lightning strikes the computer of a young man named Darwin (of course), and he is forced to venture into the dangerous "outside". He is surprised to come across a beautiful young woman, living with her family in the woods, who teach him how to speak and show him the value of human contact. Meanwhile, the security forces have sent drones to search for and to recapture him. Nick Krause stars, with Molly Parker, Juliette Gosselin, Jordyn Negri, and Daniel Divenere. Unfortunately this looks quite cheesy and derivative, borrowing...

Shoplifters of the World Review: Helena Howard and Ellar Coltrane Embark on a Music-Filled Journey of Self-Discovery
The Smiths are dead. That’s the news Cleo (Helena Howard) punctuates with a scream loud enough to wake everyone in Denver, Colorado but her own passed out drunk mother on the couch. So she drives to the one place she knows she’ll find a kindred spirit: the record store. Dean (Ellar Coltrane) is reading the news behind the counter as she walks in, the obvious air of depression looming above him before his boss (Thomas Lennon) stomps in to say that he needs to stop playing Morrissey and Marr’s music in memorialization since it’s always been too much of a downer. What he doesn’t realize that Cleo and Dean do, however, is that not everyone wants escapism from their art. Some seek an understanding that they aren’t alone.

That’s what this music gave a generation as its melodies became their home and saved...

"This night... will open our eyes." Rlje Films has released an official trailer for an indie titled Shoplifters of the World, from a British director of music docs named Stephen Kijak. Set in the summer of 1987 in Denver, Colorado, the film follows four friends. One crazy night in the life of four friends reeling from the sudden demise of iconic British band The Smiths, while the local airwaves are hijacked at gunpoint by an impassioned Smiths fan. Starring Helena Howard, Ellar Coltrane, Elena Kampouris, Nick Krause, James Bloor, Thomas Lennon, and Joe Manganiello. This isn't the only Smiths tribute film (also: The More You Ignore Me) but it does look like this'll be good. "Featuring an incredible soundtrack – including 20 songs from The Smiths – Shoplifters of the World is a glorious ode to the craziness of the '80s and the power of music ...

First Look at Dystopic Retro Scifi Darwin [Trailer]
Here's something that plays into the current obsession with technology: Darwin.

Directed by Benjamin Duffield, a long-time TV and movie editor who occasionally dabbles as a director, Darwin is Duffield's first feature in a number of years and it looks rather fantastic.

The movie stars Nick Krause as Darwin, a young man living in a dystopian society where the outside world has been destroyed. Darwin spends his days in front of a computer screen playing games and dreaming about girls but when his living space encounters a malfunction that leaves him without food or water, he ventures outside where he discovers a perfectly healthy world. He's obviously being lied to but to what end?

What I love most of the trailer is just how retro it feels. From the [Continued ...]...

Jonah Hill and Miles Teller in War Dogs (2016)
Miles Teller’s Hustle: How The ‘War Dogs’ Star Is Building One of Hollywood’s Most Versatile Careers
Jonah Hill and Miles Teller in War Dogs (2016)
Miles Teller is blonde now. The “Whiplash” and “War Dogs” star is currently sporting a mop of electric yellow hair, courtesy of Joseph Kosinski’s currently filming “Granite Mountain,” which casts Teller as a firefighter tasked with battling a wicked Arizona wildfire back in 2013. For Teller, it’s the next big step in a seemingly ever-evolving feature film career that, less than a six years in, already contains starring roles in festival favorites, Oscar contenders, superhero franchises and bawdy comedies.

In Teller’s newest feature, the Todd Phillips-directed “War Dogs,” the actor again changes direction, thanks to an action comedy that casts the actor alongside Jonah Hill as a pair of unlikely arms dealers who get in over their heads when they attempt to close a big deal with the U.S. government. But although the film has all the hallmarks of a Phillips film – namely, it’s about...

The Top Father's Day Films Ever Made? Here Are Five Dads - Ranging from the Intellectual to the Pathological
'Father of the Bride': Steve Martin and Kimberly Williams. Top Five Father's Day Movies? From giant Gregory Peck to tyrant John Gielgud What would be the Top Five Father's Day movies ever made? Well, there have been countless films about fathers and/or featuring fathers of various sizes, shapes, and inclinations. In terms of quality, these range from the amusing – e.g., the 1950 version of Cheaper by the Dozen; the Oscar-nominated The Grandfather – to the nauseating – e.g., the 1950 version of Father of the Bride; its atrocious sequel, Father's Little Dividend. Although I'm unable to come up with the absolute Top Five Father's Day Movies – or rather, just plain Father Movies – ever made, below are the first five (actually six, including a remake) "quality" patriarch-centered films that come to mind. Now, the fathers portrayed in these films aren't all heroic, loving, and/or saintly paternal figures. Several are...

Britt Robertson Explores the Dark Depths of Adolescence in Indie Drama 'White Rabbit'
Sam Trammell, Britt Robertson, and Nick Krause in White Rabbit (2013)
Britt Robertson is going indie.

The 24-year-old star has already built up years of television credits, from her turn as a once-abandoned foster child on Life Unexpected to a teen girl stuck Under the Dome, along with several high-profile films (Tomorrowland, The Longest Ride). But in White Rabbit, a psychological drama about a teen boy Harlon (Nick Krause) struggling with mental illness and bullying at school whose hallucinations of a rabbit he once killed as a boy cause him to carry out violent acts, Robertson explores the darker depths of adolescence.

The actress spent a week filming the indie after The CW witch drama The Secret Circle abruptly ended in 2012 and her brief time on White Rabbit – “a hard shoot,” she says – was life-altering. Robertson plays the rebellious Julie, who befriends Krause’s character and later finds herself in the crosshairs.

Striving to prove you have a more versatile personality and a wide range of emotions and sentiments to people who have come to view only one side of your identity can be a challenge for many people, no matter what their age is or the experiences they’ve had. White Rabbit Is the Latest from Director Tim McCann's Twisted Imagination
Give Tim McCann credit for his twisted imagination: His see-it-to-believe-it 2005 cheapie Nowhere Man concerns a guy hunting for his own severed penis, sliced off by his ex-fiancée, who's now hiding out with the organ in the residence of her former porn-movie co-star. While not quite that outré-sounding, McCann's latest, White Rabbit, boasts its own head-turning premise: Bullied adolescent Harlon (Nick Krause) can't shake the torment of his memory of shooting a rabbit at close range as a child. In the tense opening, Krause has a black eye, sports slicked-back hair, and wears dark, fingerless gloves — a far cry from his dopey guise in The Descendants. The rest of the movie, shot in gun-country Louisiana (overgrown weeds, rusty sw...

Philadelphia-based distributor Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired North American distribution rights to Tim McCann’s psychological drama White Rabbit.

Breaking Glass CEO Rich Wolff negotiated the deal with Michael Lurie of Automatic Entertainment. The film will receive a Us theatrical day-and-date release this winter.

The film centres on a bullied high school student who starts having visions of a rabbit that he killed when he was a kid, soon putting him in a state where his imagination threatens to cause him to carry out violent acts.

Directed by Tim McCann, White Rabbit stars Nick Krause (The Descendants), Sam Trammell (The Fault in our Stars), Britt Robertson (Under the Dome) and Ryan Lee (Super 8).

“We always license many titles at Tiff and they always do well for our company,” said Wolff.

Ellar Coltrane in Boyhood (2014)
Ethan Hawke Has Trouble Talking to Kids in First 'Boyhood' Clip
Ellar Coltrane in Boyhood (2014)
Ethan Hawke plays the father of two young kids in Boyhood, and in the first clip from this Richard Linklater directed drama, he tries to connect with them on an emotional level. They've stopped talking to their oldman about their day-to-day lives, and he's not okay with that. Watch as a dad tries to bond with his children in this experimental new look at childhood, as it spans 12 real years in the life of Mason, played by Ellar Coltrane in a once-in-a-lifetime performance, as he grows up right before the audience's eyes.

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's Boyhood is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. 'Boyhood' Featurette Highlights Director Richard Linklater's 12-Year Journey
Ellar Coltrane in Boyhood (2014)
Director Richard Linklater has long been a pioneer of experimental filmmaking, with revolutionary movies such as Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly under his belt. Those projects almost pale in comparison to Boyhood, which took a whopping 12 years to shoot.

IFC Films has released a new featurette for this upcoming drama, where Richard Linklater explains that he wanted to make a movie about growing up, using the same cast (Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke) over a 12-year period. The production was shot in brief increments every year to show how the cast members literally age over this timeframe, telling the story of this fictional family. We also hear from Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke as they describe this historic filmmaking journey in Boyhood, debuting in limited release on July 11.

Filmed over short periods from 2002 to 2013, Boyhood is a groundbreaking cinematic experience covering 12 years in the life of a family.

Note: Despite the fact Richard Linklater's Boyhood has screened and been reviewed at the Sundance, Berlin and South by Southwest Film Festivals (among others), the Seattle Film Festival organizers and IFC Films have told me I can only write a capsule review. '80s Cult Horror Director Jackie Kong Returns with 'CoExistence'
Director Jackie Kong, whose low-budget horror flicks Blood Diner and The Being have become cult favorites among fans of '80s horror, has stepped behind the camera once again for the romantic horror feature CoExistence – which also marks the screen reunion of Blade Runner stars Rutger Hauer and Daryl Hannah. Kong dropped off the horror map for many years to work as an activist for the non-profit group Asian-American Media Development (Aamd), but has finally returned to filmmaking with this vampiric twist on Romeo & Juliet set in California's Sonoma wine country. The modern-day retelling involves a bitter rivalry between two wine-making clans intensified by a forbidden love affair between teens from both families (played by Nick Krause & Bella Thorne), which also threatens to expose a shocking family secret. Despite the teen/vampire romance element, Kong is quick to downplay comparisons to the Twilight franchise. “I’m not just catering to teenagers,...

Super 8 Ryan Lee Joins White Rabbit
15-year-old Ryan Lee moved from previous work as an obscure minor role player to featured actor in J.J. Abrams’ highly-anticipated action movie Super 8.

He’s now set to join Nick Krause (The Descendants) in Tim McCann‘s new flick White Rabbit, teen drama written by Anthony Di Pietro, which deals with a bullied high school teen who is tormented to the breaking point by visions of the bunny he killed as a boy; the rabbit, along with other imaginary characters, turn menacing in the hopes of pushing him over the edge and luring the bully into one last fatal act of revenge.

Lee will play Krause’s best friend in this bizarre fantasy-thriller, while True Blood’s Steve Trammell will co-star as the protag’s father; its being earlier reported that Scream 4 star Brittany Robertson landed the female lead role in McCann’s new drama.

Willa Holland, Nick Krause, and Steve Guttenberg Study ‘The Science of Cool’
After having ample start dates postponed and the cast reformulated over the past two years, suffice to say that the indie drama The Science of Cool has seen better production days. But, alas, ThePlaylist has just informed us that the indie is being resurrected, with a new cast in tack: Willa Holland (The O.C., Legion), Nick Krause (The Descendants), and Steve Guttenberg are headlining the project, with newcomers Matthew Ziff, Guy Kent, and genre mainstay Michael Biehn also in toe. Mischa Barton, who’s been associated with the film since the beginning, is still contemplating a role in the picture.

Where the indie was once a comedy about “a couple of high schools nerds who transform themselves into the coolest kids in the class,” it has since taken a darker turn, now centering on “two students who discover a chemical formula that makes them popular, but with that power and new reality,...

Britt Robertson Goes Chasing 'White Rabbit'
A hookah-smoking caterpillar has given Britt Robertson the call to join an indie drama.

The "Scream 4" beauty is set to feed her head as she'll play with the men on the chessboard of "White Rabbit," according to Deadline.

"White Rabbit" centers on a bullied high school teen (Nick Krause of "The Descendants") whose nightmares begin to affect his waking life. Robertson will be playing his girlfriend, with Sam Trammell of "True Blood" set to play his father.

Britt Robertson recently wrapped her recurring role as Cassie Blake on the now-canceled CW drama, "The Secret Circle." She recently scowled her way through the dysfunctional family drama, "The Family Tree," and screamed with the best of them as Marnie Cooper in Wes Craven's "Scream 4."

Robertson also recently earned a lot of buzz for her turn in the high school romance, "The First Time," which made a splash at Sundance earlier this year.

True Blood and The Descendants Stars Join Forces For White Rabbit
Though he didn't win the award season buzz of his co-stars George Clooney and Shailene Woodley, ingendude Nick Krause offered a memorable turn and proved a capable scene-stealer as Woodley's onscreen beau, an oblivious surfer who gets punched out by the film's fiery grandfather, Robert Forster. Krause took his licks and is now getting a shot to headline a drama of his own as THR announces he's signed on to star in Tim McCann's soon-to-shoot indie White Rabbit. The film penned by Anthony Di Pietro centers on the mental deterioration of a bullied teen boy (Krause) who begins suffer hallucinations about the white rabbit that he killed when he was younger, as well as a menageries of other menacing characters, who coach him toward insanity and deadly revenge. The twisted fantasy elements of this demented drama are sure to draw comparisons to another bunny-centered drama, the cult classic Donnie Darko,...

‘The Descendants’ Actor Nick Krause and ‘True Blood’ Star Sam Trammell Leading ‘White Rabbit’
Your eyes do not deceive you: Two actors from The Descendants — the film’s main romantic pairing, too — are both starring in films titled White [Animal]. And, just as Shailene Woodley is likely to take a darker slant with the new Gregg Araki picture, THR says her onscreen boyfriend, Nick Krause, is also going in a dark (not to mention fantastical) direction on White Rabbit.

Joining him will be Sam Trammell (True Blood), both of whom will star for director Tim McCann — semi-fun, completely useless fact: he teaches at my college — in the film, a story of one troubled boy’s (Krause) overbearing “visions of a rabbit that he killed when he was nine years old.” Things only get worse when, along with “other imaginary characters,” the rabbit begins “pushing him over the edge and luring him into one last fatal act of revenge.” (The senior thespian will be seen as his father.

Review: The Descendants
This is the Pure Movies review of The Descendants, directed by Alexander Payne and starring George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause, Patricia Hastie, Grace A. Cruz, Kim Gennaula and Karen Kuioka Hironaga. Elizabeth King is in a coma. Not much of an acting part for poor Patricia Hastie, bless her, but she does a valiant job under tricky circumstances. Unfortunately for our unconscious star, while the action taking place around her is entertaining enough, and even touches on raw humanity in places, it ultimately rings slightly hollow. I’d like to say that attractive Elizabeth creates that hollow - her intriguing and charismatic personality leaving a feeling of clutching emptiness at the core of the narrative. But in fact, it is hard to care much about the pretty, neglected wife and her predictable affair. Perhaps it wasn’t such great acting after all, Liz. Sorry.

The Descendants – DVD Review
DVD Review

The Descendants

Directed by: Alexander Payne

Cast: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Nick Krause, Robert Forster

Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins

Rating: R

Due Out: March 13, 2012

Plot: After his wife gets into a boating accident, Matt King (Clooney) tries reconnecting with his two daughters while overseeing the possible sale of a large piece of Hawaiian land that’s been in his family for decades.

Who’S It For? Fans of George Clooney and Alexander Payne should have no trouble finding plenty to like about this film. Those who appreciate a family drama that elicits tears as well as laughs should also take a look.

Movie:

It takes a deft hand to successfully blend tragedy and laughs. I’m not going to pretend The Descendants pulls it off flawlessly – Nick Krause’s comic relief rubbed me the wrong way for much of the film – but overall it’s another winner from writer/director Alexander Payne.

Exclusive: Shailene Woodley Talks The Descendants Blu-ray
Shailene Woodley in To Catch a Killer (2023)
Shailene Woodley discusses her breakthrough role in The Descendants, which is now out on Blu-ray and DVD

While fans of the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager have been enjoying Shailene Woodley's work for the past few years, the 20-year-old actress has arrived in the stratosphere of stardom after her fantastic turn in The Descendants. The drama, which made my Top 10 movies of 2011, is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD, and I had the chance to speak with Shailene Woodley about her experiences on the set of Alexander Payne's Best Picture nominee. Here's what she had to say below.

This was one of my favorite movies of the year, and it was fun to go through the Blu-ray to check out some of the features. There were audition stories from other cast members, but there isn't one for you on there. Do you have...
