The horror genre is well-regarded in cinema as the closest thing to a guaranteed money-maker there is, at least where non-ip is concerned. Horror movies in general have a built-in fan base who are always willing (if not eager) to go check out the latest supernatural thriller, throwback slasher, zombie flick, or whatever other scares are in store. However, one of the other staples of the genre is its thriftiness — you don't need a huge budget to make an effective and successful horror movie, and that in turn makes it more possible for the movie to be successful at the box office. Although most horror movies turn a healthy profit, you don't tend to see too many reaching the same lofty financial heights as the average multi-million dollar blockbuster.
The closest horror movies come to earning billions of dollars is when they're part of a successful franchise, and sometimes not even then.

The Conjuring film franchise is set to come to an end with the fourth installment, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which Warner Bros. has scheduled for a theatrical release on September 5, 2025 release. A couple months ago, producer James Wan took to social media to share a picture of the chairs meant for franchise stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga on the set of the film, writing, “Always good to see and hang out with old friends. Gonna miss everyone. End of an era.“ Production on the sequel has since wrapped, with Farmiga also posting on Instagram about the end of the time she and Wilson have spent playing the paranormal investigators / married couple Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Sharing a picture of their characters’ wedding picture, Farmiga wrote, “Roundabout 5000 days ago, this guy and I signed a WB contract and said ‘I do’ to embodying Ed and Lorraine Warren. Today, he wraps.

The Conjuring series star Madison Wolfe has offered an emotional response to the fourth movie, The Conjuring: Last Rites, being the end of the $321 million franchise. The fourth movie under the series' name and the ninth installment overall in the horror shared universe, the story of The Conjuring: Last Rites marks the end of Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) digging into paranormal hauntings. While it's unclear which of their real-world investigations will be adapted for the final movie, it will mark a seemingly definitive end to the nearly 12-year-old horror franchise.

One of the most iconic on-screen horror couples of the past decade is about to make their final appearance in the upcoming film The Conjuring: Last Rites. Director James Wan recently took to his Instagram page, @creepypuppet, to share a post signaling the official start of filming for the fourth and final film in the main series.
The photo shows chairs for Ed and Lorraine Warren, the infamous demonologists based on the real couple of the same name. Within The Conjuring Universe, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have played them in all three main films, starting with the 2013 film, along with making appearances in a few others, such as Annabelle Comes Home.

The Conjuring: Last Rites has begun filming, confirms franchise veteran and creator James Wan. As the fourth movie in The Conjuring franchise, the movie will serve as the swan song for the main series. The Conjuring followed paranormal experts and demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively) as they rid a familys house of an evil entity. The film was such a success that it led to two sequels and several spinoffs, most of them performing well with critics and grossing an impressive $2 billion at the global box office.
Co-producer Wan took to Instagram to share a photo from the set of The Conjuring: Last Rites. Bonnie Aarons is surprisingly most recognizable when she looks nothing like herself, considering that her most famous role is the demon nun Valak in The Conjuring 2. Outside The Conjuring franchise, Aarons has appeared in over 50 movies, including some unexpected ones. She briefly appears in the comedy Shallow Hal, both The Princess Diaries movies, starring Anne Hathaway, and the psychological drama The Silver Linings Playbook. Still, Aarons is best known for horror movies, including Drag Me To Hell and I Know Who Killed Me, and The Conjuring franchise made her a horror icon.

The Conjuring: Last Rites adds X-Men star Ben Hardy and Mia Tomlinsonas the latest new additions to join Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren's (Vera Farmiga) final case. Slated for release in 2025, the ninth installment in the Conjuring franchise is set to bring the paranormal investigator's story to a close. The characters have been key parts of the franchise since the original 2013 movie, with the series having crafted a fictionalized representation of the real-world investigators and many of their notable cases.

The Conjuring 4 – or The Conjuring: Last Rites – has landed in London for production ahead of its 2025 release. More here.
If you’re keeping track of The Conjuring series of movies and it assorted spin-offs, then just know that to collect them all on physical media you’re going to need to invest in a good shelf from Ikea. Other suppliers are available.
However, in terms of the actual main line of Conjuring films, there have been three. By my reckoning, there have been five direct spin-off movies, so they’re winning. Still, as you’ve probably gleaned from the headline to this story, there’s now a fourth The Conjuring film that’s recently gone before the cameras.
It’s called The Conjuring: Last Rites, and we’re willing to bet a reasonable amount of money that it won’t be the last one. Screen Daily is reporting too...

The Conjuring 4 has found its director after a long wait, confirming it as the last mainline film in the franchise. Michael Chaves will be directing the upcoming horror sequel, and sources have confirmed that it will be the final installment in The Conjuring Universe. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are expected to return for the movie, which is set to start filming in Summer 2024.
After nearly three years of waiting, The Conjuring 4 has finally found its director and confirmed itself to be the last mainline movie in the franchise. Created by James Wan, the hit horror franchise has largely revolved around the various cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, real-life married paranormal investigators played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson in the mainline movies and spinoffs. It was confirmed in late 2022 that a fourth Conjuring movie was in development with original screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returning, though no director had been set.

Paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) are suiting up to investigate what could be their final case. Warner Bros. has set a September 5, 2025 release date for The Conjuring 4, which is said to be the final installment of the main series.
The untitled Conjuring movie is set to be directed by Michael Chaves, who is no stranger to the franchise. He helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, as well as The Nun II. Chaves also directed The Curse of La Llorona, which is often mistakenly included in the franchise. While the film has several notable connections to The Conjuring Universe (including an Annabelle easter egg and Tony Amendola reprising his role as Father Perez), Chaves confirmed last year that it’s not part of the franchise.
“There’s so much debate about it and I think I’ve played coy in the past,” Chaves said.

Ed and Lorraine Warren are returning to us in the fictional universe of The Conjuring. According to Variety, Warner Bros. has confirmed the date of the fourth film in the popular horror franchise, and it's set for release in theaters and IMAX on September 5, 2025.
Supposedly, this will also be the "final" film in The Conjuring film series, though I don't necessarily believe that. Even if the mainline films are finished after The Conjuring 4, I'm assuming we'll still see additional installments in the franchise in the form of its spinoff series like The Nun and Annabelle. But we'll see what happens.
Variety says The Conjuring 4 hasn't been officially titled yet, but I've seen conflicting reports indicating it will be called The Conjuring: Last Rites, which would fit with the finality of it all. Still, September 2025 is a long way off, so I wouldn't be surprised if the name undergoes changes between now and then.

Marking Gyllenhaal’s follow-up to the Academy Award-nominated Netflix drama The Lost Daughter, The Bride! watches as a lonely Frankenstein (Christian Bale) travel to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.

Horror movies about nuns play on the common fears and religious rituals many people experience throughout their lives, making them some of the best scary movies out there. More often than not, nuns themselves are not the ones to be feared, but when they become possessed by demons or devils within the fictional narrative, they become something much more sinister. Conversely, some of the greatest nun horror movies depict the dangers of religious fundamentalism and fervor that can turn violent at the drop of a hat.
Nun horror movies are gaining popularity again with the release of Sydney Sweeney's R-rated Immaculate, but the genre has always included plenty of stellar films. Despite the portrayal in The Conjuring 3, Ed Warren did not actually have a heart attack during the exorcism of David Glatzel. The movie takes creative liberties with the real Warren cases, including the involvement of a fraudulent satanist in the plot. Ed Warren did later suffer from heart issues, leading to his eventual death in 2006 at the age of 79.
Patrick Wilson's character is almost killed by a demon in The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and many wonder if the real Ed Warren had a heart attack when working on a case. Directed by Michael Chaves, the third movie in the main saga of the Conjuring universe is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson (Ruairi O'Connor), who in 1981 pleaded not guilty to murdering his landlord on the basis that he was possessed by a demon at the time and not in control of his actions.

The Conjuring 4 – which, last we heard, was going by the title The Conjuring: Last Rites – is expected to be the final installment of the series at the heart of the Conjuring Universe… but it’s only the ending when it comes to big screen feature films. Fourteen months ago, it was announced that a The Conjuring TV series is in the works at the Max streaming service, and now Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, has confirmed that the show is still in development.
When asked what’s in the HBO and Max pipeline, Bloys told Variety, “One of the advantages that I think we have as a company, putting aside HBO for a second, is all the Warner Bros. IP. So after House of the Dragon, the next big tentpole series that we have coming up will be The Penguin with Colin Farrell. That...

The Conjuring 3 mixed fact with fiction to create a scarier story of possession and murder. The trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson was the first to use demonic possession as a defense in the US. The Glatzel family's opinions on the Warrens and the exorcism differ, leading to controversy.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is based on the true story of the Glatzel family's alleged experiences with demonic possession and Arne Cheyenne Johnson's murder trial. The third entry in the fictional Conjuring Universe, the movie brought back franchise stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren. The characters are based on the late controversial paranormal investigators who were self-proclaimed experts in hauntings and demonic activity.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

"You can't count it!" That's what producer Peter Safran said to Entertainment Weekly in 2023 about "The Curse of La Llorona" being part of The Conjuring Universe. Safran, who has helped to spearhead the very successful horror franchise alongside James Wan since 2013, did not leave any room for interpretation there. Yet, director Michael Chaves' successful 2019 feature directorial debut contains characters from "Conjuring" films, as well as overt references to events in those stories. Be that as it may, this movie now exists as both an unquestionable hit and a film that narratively exists in The Conjuring Universe but, for technical reasons, actually doesn't.

The Conjuring 4 could push the franchise past $1 billion at the box office, joining the ranks of most profitable horror films. The main Conjuring series has already made over $800 million globally, with the potential to surpass this milestone with the next installment. The success of The Conjuring Universe makes it the highest-grossing horror franchise, setting the stage for a landmark achievement with the upcoming sequel.
The Conjuring 4 is set to be the end of the main film series, and there's a strong possibility the upcoming sequel will pass a significant box office milestone for the horror franchise. Though the movie will serve as the fourth movie in the primary Conjuring series, it will mark the tenth installment in The Conjuring Universe (if including The Curse of La Llorona). Launched in 2013 with James Wan's The Conjuring, the franchise's main focus heavily follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, while the spinoffs...

Warners Bros has screened their axed Coyote vs. Acme to around 12 buyers we hear with a rigid buy price of $70M+; which is how much the animated live-action hybrid movie cost.
Netflix and Paramount put forth bids, which we told you about, but they were lower than the $70M asking price (between $30M-$50M), therefore in Warner’s eyes, rivals didn’t want the feature for what it cost.
What Deadline has received clarity on is that Warner Bros took a $70M writedown on Q3 earnings, not the upcoming Q4. Nonetheless, the movie, which the Burbank, CA lot decided back in early November not to release — remains in purgatory. That said, we hear the door isn’t officially closed on Coyote vs. Acme‘s prospects yet — it’s just that the Coyote could wind up in the cave with Batgirl.

THR reports that Michael Chaves is in negotiations to serve as the director of The Conjuring 4, which is expected to be the final installment of the main series.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are naturally expected to return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, with production looking to start shooting this summer in Atlanta. Plot details are being kept under wraps at this point, but a few ghostly apparitions and demonic possessions are a good bet.

New Line’s The Conjuring movie series is coming back for one last ride. Or one last rite, as it were.
The project, operating currently under the simple title of The Conjuring 4, has been in the works since early last year but has finally landed on a director. And it’s a familiar visage.
Michael Chaves, who helmed the previous installment, 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is in negotiations to direct what is being eyed as the fourth and final outing. The move makes Chaves a true Conjuring Universe player as he also directed last year’s spinoff, The Nun II.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the third installment with franchise creator James Wan, penned the screenplay.
Wan is producing with Peter Safran.

Hollywood has always been enamored of franchises. Universal became synonymous with horror movies in the 1930s with their Classic Monsters run, while MGM mined Mickey Rooney's Andy Hardy character for 16 films. And then there's the "Blondie" series based on Chic Young's comic strip, which Columbia Pictures wrung bone dry for a staggering 28 installments.
For the most part, these films were produced quickly and cheaply for a quick score at the box office. It wasn't until 1962, when United Artists made a killing with the first James Bond movie ("Dr. No"), that studios began to view franchises as cash cows. With the subsequent success of the "Pink Panther" and "Planet of the Apes" movies, the industry became increasingly eager to turn its blockbusters into ongoing sagas. This filmmaking approach went into hyperdrive in 1977 with the unprecedented phenomenon of "Star Wars." From that point forward, Hollywood quickly became a franchise-driven town.

The Nun 2 is a successful addition to the Conjuring franchise, solidifying director Michael Chaves as a valuable member. The movie expands on the lore of Valak and introduces connections to other films in the Conjuring Universe with Ed and Lorraine Warren's post-credits appearance. Michael Chaves and writer Akela Cooper worked well together, creating vivid characters that felt modern yet timeless in a period piece setting.
The Nun 2 cements director Michael Chaves as a necessary member of the Conjuring franchise, hitting it out of the part with another box office success. The movie follows The Nun protagonist Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) and newcomer Sister Debra (Storm Reid) as they investigate a series of apparent murders that lead to a French boarding school and the return of the demonic nun, Valak.

Chaves wanted to deliver a clear announcement of the connection, making it a bigger part of the story rather than just an Easter egg. The idea of connection to family resonates with audiences and adds emotional depth to the characters' relationship.

“The Nun II” is more evidence that “The Conjuring Universe” is among the most consistent and bankable franchises in Hollywood. It’s a straight-up sequel to “The Nun,” with both films now serving as prequels to “The Conjuring 2.” The Michael Chaves-directed entry earned $268 million worldwide on a $39 million budget. That was up from Chaves’ $197 million-grossing “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” released in the Covid/Project Popcorn summer of 2021. It’s also more than the $200 million DC superhero tentpole “The Flash.”
The eight films, begun in 2013 with James Wan’s “The Conjuring,” have earned over $2.25 billion on a combined budget of $71 million. Well, $2.37 billion if you count Michael Chaves’ “The Curse of La Llorona.” That early 2019 flick earned $123 million in early 2019 and contained a handful of “Conjuring” universe treats.

Fun fact: “Emily in Paris,” which films all across the city of Paris and throughout France, was originally slated to film in New York. The idea was to shoot the majority of the Netflix series in the U.S. and head to France for a few weeks to film exteriors of iconic locations. Upon discovering showrunner Darren Starr’s plans, director and executive producer Andy Fleming exclaimed, “This is crazy, you have to shoot [in Paris].”
Referencing the charmingly worn doors in Parisian apartments that would be difficult to recreate in the States, Fleming talked about how he pushed for production to cross the ocean. “I thought, if the writers go over there, they will get in a taxicab going the wrong way around the Louvre, and they will be embarrassed in a restaurant and they will do all of the things that Emily would do, and [that] will inform the writing,” said Fleming.

The ending of The Nun II for Maurice was intentionally bittersweet, as it sets up his later fate in The Conjuring universe's timeline. Director Michael Chaves wanted to give Maurice a happy ending in the movie, knowing that it wasn't truly the end of his story due to his eventual death. Maurice's death is an important element in the shared horror universe, as his possession by Valak sets important events into motion and showcases the power of the demon.
The Nun II director Michael Chaves has revealed the film's devastating ending for Maurice was intentional, due to his later fate in the universe's timeline. The horror film ends with its antagonist, Valak, seemingly defeated, with Maurice no longer possessed and able to build a life with Sophie and Kate if he chooses. However, the character is destined to die later in The Conjuring universe, as the demon still latches onto...

This post contains spoilers for "The Nun II."
It's difficult to encapsulate just how huge The Conjuring Universe truly is. The third successful horror franchise launched by James Wan (following "Insidious" and "Saw") has expanded into three distinct tracks of horror stories: "The Conjuring" films, following Ed and Lorraine Warren; the "Annabelle" films, centered on the titular doll; and "The Nun" films, centered on the demon Valak. "The Nun II" is the latest addition to the series, a massive hit at the box office and a film that laid the groundwork for what feels like the inevitable climax of the decades-spanning story. It feels like we're heading toward a final chapter like The Avengers, but with demons, possessed artifacts, and Patrick Wilson singing Elvis songs.
"The Nun II" is currently available on Digital and is coming to 4K Uhd soon, and in honor of its release, I was fortunate enough...

There are definitely some benefits to watching horror movies at home. For one thing, it's easy to hide under the covers when jump scares get overwhelming, or to pause for popcorn if you need to break the tension (or just really want some popcorn). In the case of the self-referential and foreshadowing-heavy Conjuring Universe, though, catching the latest movie on digital and home media also comes with one extra added benefit: the potential for frame-by-frame Easter egg hunting.
There are Easter eggs aplenty hidden throughout the interconnected franchise that began with "The Conjuring" in 2013, and apparently "The Nun II" is no exception. /Film's Bj Colangelo recently spoke with the director of the latest Conjuring-verse chiller, Michael Chaves, to get the scoop on some of the movie's most rewarding hidden references. Fair warning if you haven't seen "The Nun II" yet: Chaves talks about some of these hidden references in detail,...

"The Curse of La Llorona" was initially believed to be a standalone film, but it was later revealed to be connected to the greater "Conjuring" universe. Tony Amendola reprises his role as Father Perez from "Annabelle" in "The Curse of La Llorona," making it a direct connection between the two films. While the film doesn't officially belong to the "Conjuring" universe, it contains Easter eggs and references that link it to the broader cinematic universe, leaving the possibility open for a future connection.
The Curse of La Llorona is a standalone horror movie with ties to a greater universe, but how does La Llorona connect to The Conjuring? When New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. released The Conjuring in 2013, they had no idea just how big it would become. The James Wan-directed film is viewed as one of the modern classics of the genre and received critical praise upon release.
