Fox Comedy ‘Best Medicine’ Adds ‘Turtles All the Way Down’ Star Cree (Exclusive)
Image
Fox’s upcoming medical comedy “Best Medicine” has added Cree in a series regular role, Variety has learned exclusively.

The actress joins previously announced series stars Josh Charles, Abigail Spencer, Annie Potts, and Josh Segarra. The one-hour show was originally announced in May and serves as an American adaptation of the popular British series “Doc Martin.”

The official description of the show states:

“The series centers on Martin Best (Charles), a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Unfortunately, Martin’s blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, especially local school teacher Louisa Glasson (Spencer), however tenacity is the creed of everyone in their small village, and the people who live there may be exactly what the doctor ordered.”

Thanks to ‘EA Sports College Football’, gamers are the new four-star recruits
Image
Every year, the top college football schools in the country compete against one another to recruit highly ranked prospects coming out of high school. The current college football offseason, however, is looking a little different. Athletes are still being wooed by prestigious programs, but so are creators — and EA Sports College Football 26 is the main reason why.

College Football 26, which EA released on July 10, is the latest chapter in a video game franchise that dates back to the 90s. Early installments of the series rank among the best sports video games of all time, but the gridiron simulator was forced into dormancy after courts ruled that game publishers could not include amateur athletes who were (at the time) unable to profit from depictions of their likenesses.

The advent of name, image, and likeness (Nil) deals for college athletes changed the narrative. As the value of Nil deals skyrocketed, EA chose to bring back College Football,...

VidCon’s new owner says it’s “the Super Bowl for creators,” but doesn’t have concrete plans to pump it up
Image
When the Green brothers founded VidCon in 2010, there was no other event like it. Now, the creator industry is a $250 billion business that spans dozens of platforms and monetization machines, with millions of creators making their living from posting content; then, it was a collection of creatives who were doing cool stuff online, with no real expectation that their YouTube videos would turn into a career. VidCon was one of the only places for creators and fans to meet up, and was a hallmark annual social event.

But as our space evolved, more events popped up, most of them (like VidSummit and Creator Economy Live) biz dev-focused and more about getting creators face time with potential management, marketing, and merchandising partners than about arranging fan meet-and-greets.

This has left VidCon in kind of a weird spot, especially after its 2018 sale to Viacom. It tried flexing to embrace the TikTok era,...

10 Best YouTuber Cameos In Movies & TV Shows
Image
YouTube has only been around as a company for just a little over 20 years at the time of writing, and yet in that small span of time, it's turned many ordinary folks into full-fledged celebrities. Lots of performers have gotten their starts on YouTube, whether it's 10-year-old Sabrina Carpenter's best covers of Taylor Swift and Adele, or teenage Bo Burnham's comedy music taking him from his childhood bedroom to Netflix specials. Even though many have transcended the online space for A-list fame, others have made whole careers out of their independent work.

In the past 10 or so years, it hasn't been uncommon for YouTubers to gain a little more notoriety by making small cameos in film and TV. Some are lucky enough to get side gigs acting in popular TV shows on HBO or NBC, while others get a sliver of the spotlight in big studio releases worldwide.

Marvel's X-Men Reboot Reportedly Lands Director of Highest Rated MCU Film in Years
Image
Editor's note: This article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*.

The man behind the Thunderbolts may be switching from the New Avengers to some even newer mutants. Thunderbolts*director Jake Schreier is reportedly in talks to helm the upcoming X-Menfilm for Disney and Marvel Studios, according to Deadline. While nothing is set in stone, this would be another feather in the cap for a director whose most recent MCU film has garnered high praise.

Details about the process remain unclear. However, Schreier has reportedly been one of the top choices to helm the upcoming X-Men film, according to Deadline, with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feigereportedly working hard to find the perfect fit. It's unsurprising, then, that he would land on Schreier, given how well Thunderbolts* has been received following a string of less-than-stellar MCU films. But nothing is set in stone yet.

The X-Men film, which has been rumored for a while,...

The New Avengers Pushes Marvel Audiences Outside Their Comfort Zone
Image
[This story contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*]

Director Jake Schreier‘s Thunderbolts* caught many audiences by surprise this weekend. Not only in terms of what’s behind the name, which I’ll get to, but its lack of conventionality. The Marvel Studios movie proved to be a hit with critics who have been less forgiving of certain Marvel-isms of late. The positive reception feels like a legitimate game-changer for the MCU going forward. And not in the conventional way of box office records or audiences doing flips and screaming themselves hoarse in theaters. It’s a quieter, more profound and arguably more important kind of game-changer that once again shows that Marvel Studios is at its best when it leans on underdogs and defies expectations.

The cycle of proclamations claiming, “Marvel is over!” followed by, “Marvel is back!” has grown tiresome because neither is true. Marvel is simply here, a constant that, like all long-running franchises,...

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Seemingly Found Its Haymitch in Looking for Alaska Star
Image
There's a new The Hunger Games prequel coming up. Following the recent release of the fifth book in the franchise, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, an adaptation will follow late next year.

Sunrise on the Reaping will take place after the events of the previously released prequel novel and adaptation, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which came out in 2023, but before the original films and novels. It will follow fan-favorite character Haymitch Abernathy, whose adult version was played by Woody Harrelson in the original The Hunger Games films. Set to start production fairly soon, Nexus Point News claims Charlie Plummer is eyed to play the young Haymitch in Sunrise on the Reaping.

How I Met Your Mother Features A Sneaky Cameo From Its Two Creators
Image
There's nothing more delightful than when a director/creator inexplicably shows up in the thing they're making. That's why I'll always love M. Night Shyamalan movies, even the bad ones, and why I love every Gordon Cole scene throughout "Twin Peaks." Sure, sometimes the guy doing the cameo isn't good at acting, but that's often part of the charm, like when writer John Green awkwardly stumbled through a deleted scene of "The Fault in Our Stars."

"How I Met Your Mother" got in on this schtick too with its season 1 episode, "Milk." This episode features a scene where Barney attempts (and succeeds at) an elaborate pick-up line, one that starts off with him scaring a woman at the bar by acting like she's having some serious health crisis. As part of the trick, Barney even brings in two paramedics who are apparently in on the ruse. Those paramedics are played...

The Best Horror Movies of 2024
Image
To tweak Hugh Grant’s best line in “Love Actually,” horror actually is all around.

Whether you’re riding into the new year on your high horse or calmly preparing to walk into the sea, 2025 is a turning point. There’s no genre that tells us who we are or what we’re made of like this one, and the past twelve months have offered audiences a slew of scary stories full of shocks and surprises that were mostly open to interpretation.

Not all of us found powerful metaphors for social change in popular titles, and plenty of terrifying efforts flew under the radar in the genre’s generally high-grossing landscape. There were enough abortion analogies released last spring to merit their own ranking And there’s a reason “MaXXXine” — the definitive film of Brat Girl Summer! — didn’t make many year-end lists. Fittingly, the Mia Goth-starring sequel is...

Was the Ending of The Fault in Our Stars Too Heartbreaking? Analyzing Its Emotional Impact (Photo Credit – Facebook)

When the credits rolled on The Fault in Our Stars, many viewers were left reaching for tissues and wondering: was that ending necessary? For a lot of us, Gus seemed perfectly fine, a rock of support for Hazel, who grappled with her cancer struggles. He was charming, witty, and always there to light up her world. Their connection blossomed in Amsterdam, where Gus offered Hazel the romance and normalcy she’d craved. But then came the gut punch—his death. Yes, it was heartbreaking, yet there was a certain beauty in it, a reminder of the unpredictability of cancer and how all we truly have is now.

Hazel herself set the tone for the film with a poignant line: “I believe we have a choice in this world about how to tell sad stories.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas’s Big Twist Used the Fault in Our Stars Formula that Cost the Movie Its Tragic Themes
Image
Of all the overused tropes in the romance genre, terminal illness is one of them. Death, however, isn’t controversial as much as the treatment of the theme. I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is one such example of its treatment of illness. The film’s portrayal of a grave illness contrasts with John Green’s masterpiece The Fault In Our Stars. And there’s more to it.

Hazel and Augustus in a still from the movie | Credit: 20th Century Fox

Green’s movie outlines the complexities associated with the theme. With a sensitive approach, the movie was able to portray grief and loss. On the other hand, the animated movie failed to garner empathy.

Through its controversial move, the film made a complete mockery of terminal illness. Moreover, the author’s approach to death is rather insensitive. What could have been a tragic moment was reduced to a cheap move.

Which Emily Henry Books Are Becoming Movies? ‘Happy Place,’ ‘Book Lovers,’ Among Others
Image
Romance author Emily Henry now has five of her most recent novels set to be adapted for the big and small screens. Henry went on a rom-com writing spree that began with Beach Read, which came out in the summer of 2020. She has published a book a year since then, with People We Meet on Vacation coming out in 2021, Book Lovers arriving in 2022, Happy Place released in 2023 and Funny Story hitting shelves this year.

Three of Henry’s books received adaptation optioning deals for films, with two of them attaching directors. Starting in 2022, multiple studios made the decision to adapt various Emily Henry books into movies. Controversial Book Scenes That Movies Will Never Adapt
Image
This article includes discussions of sexual violence, mutilation, miscarriage, and children engaging in disturbing behavior.

Film and literature are closely related, and in 2024 alone, viewers have already been graced with successful film adaptations of Dune, It Ends With Us, and The Idea of You. That said, even faithful adaptations probably shouldn't always try to replicate their source material in a new medium. This is especially true when novels include scenes that are too controversial to place on the screen.

While sometimes fans are frustrated by everything that's left out of film adaptations, some scenes probably don't belong on the screen. From The Road's darkest elements to an infamous scene in Stephen King's It, there are certain scenes from books that will probably never be translated into film.

Updated September 16, 2024, by Arthur Goyaz: Adapting a book to the big screen is no easy task, especially when the source material features controversial scenes.

'Uglies' Review - Netflix's YA Adaptation Is Hideous Inside and Out
Image
Back in 2012, when this writer was 15, every few months my friends and I would run to the theater for the cinematic event of the most recent adaptation of a bestselling YA novel. Whether it was a love triangle amidst dystopian warfare in The Hunger Games or another title in the terminally ill teenagers fall in love" subgenre, there really was no time like that era when John Green wielded as much power as Kevin Feige does today. These releases were once box-office gold, but lost steam and ultimately had no place in the MCU and streaming climate of cinema and television today and the final movie in the Divergent series is the carcass of evidence. To compare, 2014s The Fault in Our Stars earned over $300 million at the global box office, whereas 2019s Five Feet Apart took in less than a third of that.

VidCon has (reportedly) been sold
Image
The VidCon sale has finally happened. Owner Paramount Global (which is in the middle of an $8 billion merger with Skydance) has sold the longtime creator-and-fan event to media and events company Informa.

Like some other acquisitions that have happened in our space recently–Publicis and Influential, Wasserman and Long Haul Management–this buy indicates outside interest in the creator space.

Informa, a London-based, publicly traded company that turned over $3.19 billion in revenue in 2023, is already involved in other fandoms, with a division called “Fan Expo HQ” that runs events like Toronto Comicon and Game Developers Conference, but this appears to be its first move in our industry.

A person familiar with the matter told Business Insider they’re optimistic the sale could help VidCon reboot itself and restore creators’ and attendees’ flagging interest.

Back when vlogbrothers Hank and John Green founded the event in 2010, there was no other competitor. Fourteen years later,...

All 8 John Green Books, Ranked According to Goodreads
Image
John Green is the bestselling young adult fiction author, most famous for the global phenomenon The Fault in Our Stars. It may be his most successful book, but it only scratches the surface of his thoughtful, fun bibliography. In Green's work, the philosophical and the everyday coexist side-by-side. In particular, he has a knack for telling stories about adolescent protagonists, usually blending humor and heartache. They touch on heavy themes and tough subject matter while remaining enjoyable and accessible.

Ryan Reynolds & Blake Lively Box Office Battle Settles As ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Sees $54M+, ‘It Ends With Us’ Strong $50M; ‘Borderlands’ Doa – Sunday Update
Image

This is the first time that two movies in August both played to north of $50M.

The expectation is that the Justin Baldoni directed and starring movie based on the Colleen Hoover novel will have a good Sunday. Sony’s Where the Crawdads Sing only eased -13% off its Saturday. These female lit feature adaptations may fall on Saturday as the fan fevered turnout occurs on Thursday and Friday, but sometimes they they can see a matinee audience recovery on Sunday, which is what is expected here.

Many of the top theaters for this movie were in between the coasts, i.e. Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Nashville, Charlotte,...

Divergent Series Cast & Character Guide
Image
The Divergent series cast includes rising stars such as Shailene Woodley and Theo James, who gained fame from the movies. The Divergent series was canceled due to lack of success, leading the original cast to move on to other projects. Characters like Tris and Four faced themes of loyalty and sacrifice, evolving into formidable leaders in the faction-divided world.

The Divergent series main cast includes 12 prominent actors, many of whom rose to fame during the 2010s. Ezra Review: Star-Studded Family Drama Is Cheesy but Effective
Image
Tony Goldwyn might be more known for his work as an actor, but he’s also prolific as a director, having helmed a few feature films and several TV episodes. Although his latest effort in the director’s chair, the family dramedy Ezra, does suffer from some of its more conventional and melodramatic elements, it’s successful enough in its approach to be a likable, if forgettable, crowd-pleaser.

The movie follows a comedian who sets out on a life-changing road trip with his autistic son after facing decisions that could change both of their futures forever. It doesn’t reinvent the road movie subgenre, but it sets out to deliver a heartwarming and funny family dramedy, and it mostly succeeds in doing so.

Ezra deserves praise for acknowledging that autism is a spectrum, unlike many cinematic portrayals of the disorder. The characters often discuss how not every solution may be...

Thelma the Unicorn Review: More Poor Children’s Animation
Image
Jared and Jenusha Hess made a name for themselves with the quirky comedy Napoleon Dynamite but recently earned status as Academy Award nominees for their animated short Ninety-Five Senses. Thus, hopes were certainly high for their next project, the Netflix animated feature Thelma the Unicorn. Those hopes are misguided.

Inspired by the children’s book by Aaron Blabey, Thelma the Unicorn tells the story of a common farm pony who seizes the chance to make her dream come true when a chance incident causes her to look like a unicorn, only to realize that all that glitters is not… unicorns? With a pretty brief runtime, one would think that this would at least feel mercifully short. Unfortunately, the movie feels so uninspired that it goes by slowly nonetheless.

As is the case with most kids’ movies, Thelma the Unicorn has a very positive message for younger audiences. It’s a pretty straightforward underdog story,...

'I'm Getting the Sydney Sweeney Experience': Isabela Merced Talks Juggling Superman and The Last of Us
Image
Isabela Merced has been working a lot these past few years, with many cool projects, including Marvel and DC films. Although she is currently filming for Superman and The Last of Us, the actress couldn't be more excited.

Speaking with Collider to promote her most recent project, the adaptation of John Green's Turtles All the Way Down, Merced also addressed all her ongoing projects. At only 22 years old, she has already starred in Sony's Spider-Man Universe film Madame Web, and also joined James Gunn's DC Universe as Hawkgirl in next year's Superman. These are just a few of her roles, though, because the Transformers actress is also part of the upcoming Alien: Romulus and The Last of Us Season 2.

Isabela Merceds New Movie Is A Reminder To Watch Her Previous John Green Adaptation From 5 Years Ago
Image
Isabela Merced shines in Turtles All the Way Down, her second John Green adaptation after Let It Snow. Both Turtles All the Way Down and Let It Snow received high critical acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and audiences alike. Turtles All the Way Down is the most well-received John Green adaptation, while Paper Towns remains the weakest.

While Isabela Merced's powerful performance in Turtles All the Way Down elevates the film, the movie also isn't the first time she's starred in a John Green book-to-screen adaptation. Penned by Green, the bestselling Turtles All the Way Down centers on Merced's Aza Holmes, a teenager living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd). More often than not, Aza obsesses over the idea of the human microbiome and other unseen organisms, which leads to intrusive thoughts about C. diff and other life-threatening diagnoses. However, managing her Ocd becomes complicated when Aza reunites with former pal...
