‘Prison Break’ Star, 55, Provides Definitive Answer on Potential Reboot Return
Image
Prison Break was revived — and not for the first time — on Netflix last year when it was added to the platform and topped Nielsen charts for months straight. This prompted Hulu to greenlight a Prison Break reboot near the end of 2024, one that reportedly had no plans to bring back any former Prison Break stars. However, this didn’t stop fans from speaking their mind, with many calling for original stars Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller to return as Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows. Purcell, who is also known for his work as Mick Rory in DC’s Arrowverse, decided he’s heard enough. Purcell took to his personal Instagram to definitively respond to the rumors, shutting them down and confirming he will not return in the Prison Break reboot.

The Prison Break reboot is reportedly set in the same universe as the original Prison Break, but featuring all-new characters.

Friday Night Lights, Scrubs, and more shows being rebooted that don't need reboots

Over the past decade or so, reboots and revivals have become a major source of contention among consumers. More and more networks and streamers began rolling out updated iterations of past favorites, whether it was Netflix getting the Tanner family back together for Fuller House or The CW reimagining 1980s primetime soap Dynasty through a modern lens.

The success of reboots and revivals wasn't always a given, even if established IP seems like a safe bet for a slam dunk. While the craze has slowed down ever so slightly, there have still been plenty of returns, like sitcom revivals Will & Grace, Frasier, Roseanne, Night Court, and Mad About You, drama reboots like Charmed, Bel-Air, Gossip Girl, and Magnum P.I.

Whether we like it or not, the reboot and revival train will continue to move full steam ahead. There's already a handful of beloved shows set for some sort of return,...

'Prison Break' Reboot Gets Official Pilot Pickup Order From Hulu
Image
It's time for a new generation to enjoy what should be a one-season premise that is stretched beyond the realm of probability yet is completely entertaining from start to finish. Prison Break became a signature hit for Fox when it premiered in 2005, and now a new chapter is one step closer to becoming a reality thanks to Hulu.

Per Deadline, a new version of Prison Break has been handed a pilot order at Hulu courtesy of Elgin James, the man behind Mayans M.C. and The Outlaws. Plot details are being kept locked up as tight as the would-be prisoners, but the new take will reportedly be set in the same universe with a new story and cast. That means that fans of Wentworth Miller's Michael Scofield and Dominic Purcell's Lincoln Burrows will have to get attached to a new group of people trying to escape their prison walls.

‘Prison Break’ Reboot Lands Hulu Pilot Order
Image
The “Prison Break” reboot in development is one step closer to freedom, landing a pilot order from Hulu.

The new iteration of the series, from “Mayans M.C.” co-creator and showrunner Elgin James and 20th Television, is not expected to feature the characters at the center of the original jailhouse drama, Michael Scofield (played by Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell). Rather, it will exist in the same universe as the original “Prison Break” but focus on a new crew of inmates.

James executive produces alongside Dawn Olmstead, “Prison Break” creator Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz. In addition to the “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff “Mayans,” James also co-created with Stephen Merchant the Amazon Studios/BBC One series “The Outlaws,” starring Christopher Walken.

“Prison Break” ran for five seasons on Fox and spawned a TV movie, “The Final Break,” and a low-budget spinoff, “Prison Break: Proof of Innocence,” which...

Hulu's preparing to spend some time behind the walls with a planned reboot of the hit series Prison Break. A new take on the show, this one from Elgin James, has just taken a major step forward toward becoming a reality.

Per Deadline, Hulu has officially ordered a pilot for the Prison Break reboot. Should the streamer be satisfied with the pilot, a series order will be next. The project comes from James, known for co-creating FX's Sons of Anarchy spinoff series, Mayans M.C., as well as the BBC/Prime Video series The Outlaws. The potential spinoff with James was first reported to be in early development last year, and finally getting its pilot order follows the original Prison Break recently getting a resurgence in viewership on Netflix after a 2-year hiatus on that platform.

Buddyhead Documentary In The Works
Image
Buddyhead, the LA music website and record label, is getting the documentary treatment.

The group, which was created by Travis Keller and The Icarus Line’s Aaron North in 1998, was infamous for its brash attitude in the late ‘90s and early 2000s with pranks such as stealing Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst’s baseball caps and auctioning them off for a rape charity and vandalizing The Strokes’ tour bus.

Keller and Joe Cardamone, the former frontman of The Icarus Line, are now putting together a documentary with some help from artist Shepard Fairey and Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James.

On The Lash: The Buddyhead Movie will be co-directed by Keller and Cardamone and produced by Fairey and James.

One of Christopher Walkens Best Roles Is This Recent British Dark Comedy Series
Image
Quick Links Christopher Walken Played Frank in The Outlaws Stephen Merchant Had to Fax Walken the Job Offer Walken Returned as a Guest for the Third Season

Christopher Walken is famed for his roles in big movies and shows that have international success. His career has spanned over 70 years, beginning acting as a child and continuing to perform today, with recent credits that include Dune: Part Two and The War with Grandpa. While he's an expected face to see in mega-hit movies, it's a little more surprising to see him star in a British dark comedy series. Nonetheless, Walken was perfectly cast in an original show called The Outlaws. There's certainly a risk when adding in such an actor among a cast of rising stars. It could seem that using someone like Walken is simply to draw in a bigger fan base without him actually fitting the narrative. Thankfully, this wasn't the case.

Why Sons of Anarchy Creator Kurt Sutter Was Fired From Mayans Mc
Image
Following Sons of Anarchy's success, FX moved forward with a spin-off show, Mayans M.C. The show follows the Mayans bikers club in California and features some crossover between the Mayans and Samcro. It seemed like an obvious choice for Kurt Sutter to helm the ship. Although Season 1 went smoothly, problems started to emerge during the second season.

Kurt Sutter was fired in 2019 while working on the second season of Mayans M.C. His co-showrunner, Elgin James, then took full creative control in Season 3. Sutter's departure resulted in a noticeable shift in tone and storytelling, for the better and worse. After five seasons, Disney canceled the show.

Disney Fired Kurt Sutter Due to Complaints

After Sutter was fired as executive producer for Mayans M.C., he sent a letter to his inside circle. The letter detailed the backstory behind his dismissal from the show, told from Sutter's perspective in 2019. Disney acquired 20th Century Fox,...

Kurt Sutter Exits His Netflix Western ‘The Abandons’
Image
Netflix and creator Kurt Sutter have parted ways on the streamer’s western The Abandons.

Sutter, who created the drama and was serving as showrunner, left the show over creative differences with Netflix. The Abandons, set in the Oregon Territory in the 1850s, has a few weeks of production on its season remaining and will continue filming in Calgary, Alberta.

Netflix declined comment.

Netflix gave a straight-to-series order to The Abandons in October 2022. The series, which stars Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson, centers on a group of outlier families in 1850s Oregon who come together to fight a corrupt, wealthy power that wants to force them off their land. The cast also includes Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Lamar Johnson, Natalia del Riego, Lucas Till, Aisling Franciosi, Toby Hemingway, Michael Greyeyes, Ryan Hurst, Katelyn Wells, Clayton Cardenas, Elle-Maija Tailfeathers, Brían F. ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Creator Departs His Netflix Show ‘The Abandons’ With Only 3 Weeks Left of Filming
Image
Kurt Sutter has left his new Netflix show, according to multiple media reports. The showrunner best known for creating “Sons of Anarchy” departed “The Abandons” three weeks before production was scheduled to wrap in Calgary.

The upcoming Western drama stars Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson. Its executive producer and director Otto Bathurst as well as its co-exec producer Rob Askins will oversee the rest of the shoot. No new showrunner has been named. It’s been reported that the departure came down to creative differences.

TheWrap reached out to Netflix and representatives for Sutter for comment.

Set in the 1850s, “The Abandons” follows Fiona Nolan (Headey), a devout Irish woman who is incapable of conceiving a child. Believing in a higher purpose, she tries to build a family by adopting four orphans. But it isn’t long before she begins to face hardship after European aristocrats claim possession of her new home in Oregon.

Jessica Gunning's Baby Reindeer Emmy Win Is A Great Reminder To Watch This Underrated 3-Year-Old Prime Video Comedy
Image
Jessica Gunning's breakout role as Martha Scott in Baby Reindeer has earned her an Emmy, and her win serves as a reminder that the English actress previously starred in a criminally underrated series from 2021. Gunning has been acting (on the screen) since 2007, starring in various TV shows, ranging from a guest appearance in Doctor Who to a recurring role in Law & Order: UK. However, Gunning rose to prominence when she was cast to play Martha in the cast of Baby Reindeer, a 2024 Netflix black comedy-drama miniseries.

Jessica Gunning won the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie in 2024, beating Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Lily Gladstone (Under the Bridge), Aja Naomi King (Lessons in Chemistry), Diane Lane (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), Nava Mau (Baby Reindeer), and Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country).

Prison Break Sees 111% Climb On Netflix Streaming Charts 7 Years After Divisive Revival
Image
Hit Fox drama Prison Break has enjoyed an unexpected climb of more than 100% on streaming platform Netflix, seven years after its divisive revival season. Debuting on Fox in 2005, the show starred Wentworth Miller as Michael Schofield, a young man who is deliberately imprisoned in order to break out his brother, Death Row inmate Lincoln Burrows (played by Dominic Purcell), before his execution for a crime he didn't commit. The show initially ran for four seasons consisting of 79 episodes, to largely positive acclaim, and concluded with the television movie Prison Break: The Final Break in 2009, before its controversial revival in 2017.

According to reports in Deadline, Prison Break has raced to the top spot of the Nielsen overall streaming list, after finding a new lease of life on Netflix. A successful run saw the series soar 111% from the previous week, after it landed on the streaming giant after seven years off the air.

Streaming Ratings: ‘Prison Break’ Absconds With No. 1 Overall Ranking
Image
In its second week on Netflix, Prison Break rocketed to the top of Nielsen’s streaming rankings.

The former Fox series, which also streams on Hulu, was added to Netflix on July 29 and made its streaming chart debut that week. For the week of Aug. 5-11, it more than doubled the previous frame’s viewing time, rising from 758 million to 1.6 billion minutes. (Hulu, incidentally, is developing a new version of Prison Break with Mayans Mc showrunner Elgin James.)

Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy — whose final season premiered Aug. 8 — was the top original series for the week, coming in at 1.46 billion minutes of viewing. That’s a strong showing, but also down a good amount from the 2.45 billion minutes the show recorded the week of its season three premiere in June 2022.

“I just don’t want to play straight characters”: Wentworth Miller Has a Very Valid Reason Why Prison Break Season 6 Won’t Happen
Image
Actor Wentworth Miller played the lead role of Michael Scofield in the Fox drama series Prison Break. Miller’s performance was extremely well-received, with his character forming the core of the show’s narrative. Despite reviving the series for a fifth season, Miller shut the door on potentially returning for another round of the acclaimed series.

Wentworth Miller is best known for his Prison Break role (Credits: Fox).

In a social media post, Miller explained why he was no longer interested in reprising the role of the genius structural engineer. As a result, it is unlikely that we will ever see a sixth installment of Prison Break. However, the series is more than likely to return to our screens. Here is why Wentworth Miller will not be involved in the future of Prison Break.
