“All you saw were people in iron lungs”: Before the Pandemic, Another Epidemic Could’ve Killed Robert Redford Way Before He Became an American Legend
Image
Robert Redford had a dream-like Hollywood run before his retirement in 2018. He had a celebrated acting and directing career and was showered with several prestigious accolades. The Captain America: The Winter Soldier actor is also renowned for founding the Sundance Film Festival.

While it can be undoubtedly said that Robert Redford’s career will always be a dream for many, the War Hunt actor almost lost it all in his childhood. The former actor, who is mostly known to keep his personal life private shared one of the darkest moments in his life- when he had polio at 11.

For those who are well-acquainted with Robert Redford’s past, the actor has a harrowing backstory. Sadly, life was never very kind to him on the personal front. From losing loved ones to finding himself in numerous near-death experiences, the 87-year-old saw it all.

Harry Potter hero, Sixties pop star, part-time barkeep: The storied life of Richard Harris
Image
Taking a break from shooting a movie in the late Sixties, Richard Harris chartered a private plane. The actor and his entourage travelled to Hamburg to visit the brothels, and then went on a day trip to Ireland, spending an afternoon at one of Harris’s favourite pubs. They weren’t sober for a moment of the jaunt, which was chronicled by a photographer sent along for the ride.

The story of their antics is told in Adrian Sibley’s new feature documentary The Ghost of Richard Harris, a world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this week. What is most extraordinary about this particular episode is that it was nothing out of the ordinary for the Limerick-born star. Zigzagging across Europe in search of adventure, sex and alcohol was simply what Harris – at that stage of his life, at least – did.

His various paramours could likely attest to that.

Robert Redford Basically Got Into Acting by Accident (Exclusive)
No way! Robert Redford is one of the most well-known actors in Hollywood, but so it turns out, he sort of got into acting by accident. After the 1955 death of his mother, Martha, at age 40 (he was only 18 years old at the time), Robert went on a long getaway to Europe. "He was a young man struggling with his existence," Jack Brendlinger, who roomed with Robert for seven months when he lived in Florence, Italy, and Paris, exclusively told Closer Weekly in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands now. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) During that time abroad, Robert spent time sketching strangers at local cafes, which peaked his interest in acting. However, it wasn't until he moved home and his stepmother suggested he study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts that Robert embraced it. "I didn’t start out to be an actor," Robert said. "It took me a while to accept.

Books: Book Review: Michael Feeney Callan: Robert Redford: The Biography
Irish writer and biographer Michael Feeney Callan spent 14 years interviewing Robert Redford and 300 family members and colleagues for the sprawling life story Robert Redford: The Biography. He scoured Redford’s journal entries. He solicited lengthy remembrances from nearly all Redford’s major collaborators (directors Sydney Pollack and Alan J. Pakula, co-stars Jane Fonda and Paul Newman). And he provides a blow-by-blow account of the creation of the Sundance Institute (a mentoring program for aspiring filmmakers) and its attendant film festival in Redford’s home of Park City, Utah. Not to mention the festival’s seemingly ad infinitum unmaking ...

Robert Redford: The Biography by Michael Feeney Callan – review
An elegant life of Robert Redford gets to the heart of an enigmatic, Gatsbyesque charmer who dreamed of freedom, honesty and social fulfilment

Actor, director, producer, conservationist, political activist and patron of independent cinema, Robert Redford has lived a formidably energetic life while continuing to look like the diffident, tousle-haired all-American boy next door. He'll be 75 on 18 August, and his latest film as director, The Conspirator, a study of the fallout from the assassination of President Lincoln, is as ambitious and serious as anything he's done.

The Irish writer Michael Feeney Callan has known this enigmatic, Gatsbyesque charmer for 14 years, interviewed him at length, spoken to some 300 witnesses and had access to his diaries and notebooks. Callan is thus in the best possible position to answer a key question that's been sung on family occasions by Redford's children these past few years to a tune by Andrew Lloyd Webber:...

New Robert Redford Biography Claims William Goldman Didn’t Write ‘All The President’s Men’
Robert Redford
The Seventies provided some of the greatest dramas of all time. Films like The Godfather, Taxi Driver, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Network remain as dramatic today as they were then. In that time, though, film historians have uncovered much of the behind the scenes drama that happened on these classic films and, in some cases, it's better than what happened on screen. The latest case of this is a claim by Robert Redford that legendary, Oscar-winning screenwriter William Goldman didn't actually write All The President's Men, Alan J. Pakula's multiple Oscar-winner starring Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, two Washington Post reporters who eventually blew the lid off the Watergate scandal. In Michael Feeney Callan's new biography on Redford called Robert Redford: The Biography, Redford tells a story of how he and Pakula spent a month rewriting Goldman's script before shooting.

"All the President's Men" @ 35
"This month marks the 35th anniversary of the release of Alan J Pakula's film version of Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward's nonfiction book, All the President's Men," begins Marc Savlov in the Austin Chronicle. "It was one of the best of a handful of films in the crusading reporter subgenre and one that not only has withstood the test of time but also, rewatched today, provokes this thought: 'What the hell has happened to the Fourth Estate?'"

In a sidebar, Savlov notes that the film will be screening this afternoon at the Lbj Library Auditorium. Thursday sees two panel discussions, "Could the media break a story like Watergate today?," with Woodward, Bernstein, Peter Baker of the New York Times, Dana Priest of the Washington Post and Mark Miller of the Texas Tribune, and then later the same day, a discussion of the film with Woodward, Bernstein and Robert Redford.
