How ‘Monster’ Spent 3 Years Going from Muted Sundance Premiere to Netflix Original Hit

Filmmaking rarely travels a straight path, but for “Monster” it was exceptionally twisty. After the legal drama starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. premiered at Sundance in 2018 in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, it’s seen a title change, its first distribution deal fall through, and the original title restored. Producers Tonya Lewis Lee and Nikki Silver say it was all worth it: The movie premiered on Netflix May 7 and was among the top 10 Netflix titles in the U.S. last week.

“It has been a long journey, but it has been a really good journey,” Lee said. “It didn’t go the way we thought it would, but ultimately we landed where we were supposed to land. People are seeing it, they’re feeling it, and they’re responding to it.”

Duo on the rise at eOne
The reorganisation of the Canadian broadcast and digital division comes as svp of television and online at eOne Films Canada Naveen Prasad exits the company.

Audrey Gardiner is promoted to vp of television and digital distribution, eOne Films Canada, while Dan Loewy is promoted to vp of television and digital distribution, eOne Films Canada.

Gardiner and Loewy both joined eOne following the company’s acquisition of Alliance Films in January and together will oversee the Canadian film division’s broadcast and digital activities.

Gardiner will handle all licensing activities to both linear and digital accounts, while Loewy will oversee transactional business, both for linear cable and digital accounts for eOne Films Canada.

Both are based in Toronto and report to eOne Films Canada co-president Bryan Gliserman.

Prasad had overseen all aspects of the Canadian Film group’s television and digital activities and had served in the same role at Alliance Films prior to its acquisition by eOne...
