MTV, Kappa team for China dance-off
HONG KONG -- Viacom's MTV Networks China is joining with Italy's sports apparel giant Kappa to present a weekly reality TV series in search of China's best street dance talent, giving the winner an all-expenses-paid trip to meet Justin Timberlake, MTV said Thursday.
MTV Dance to Kill is the latest partnership between MTV, a Chinese provincial broadcaster and an overseas, youth-oriented brand. Previously, MTV teamed up with Moto-Razr to present a trio of mainland rock concerts on television.
The new dance series, co-produced with Chongqing Satellite TV, will host auditions in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Wuhan and Harbin and eventually be broadcast to 142 million households via MTV China's 24-hour channel and Chongqing Satellite on Sept. 15 and 16, respectively.
Hosted by Taiwanese hip-hop star Jeffrey Kung, the series will have on-air commentary from Hong Kong street fashion icon Edison Chen and Taiwanese pop princess Yuki Hsu.
The finals, in which three competitors will vie for the top spot, will take place in Beijing in January.
