Henry Golding has offered a major update about the future of the Crazy Rich Asians franchise. The original blockbuster rom-com, helmed by Wicked director Jon M. Chu, was a significant success critically and commercially when it hit theaters in 2018, as audiences bought into the opulence and glamour of the Asian jet set. A positive reception and strong box office performance usually lends itself to a sequel or spin-off being greenlit, and this Hollywood extravaganza is getting both, but the question remains: When are they coming?
HBO Max confirmed the development of a Crazy Rich Asians series earlier this year, with one of the film's original writers, Adele Lim, on board as the showrunner. In addition, she is executive producing the television adaptation of Kevin Kwan's novel of the same name alongside Chu, who has plenty of experience with the source material, having ushered in the glitzy cinematic affair. “Crazy Rich Asians” fans have been waiting patiently for a sequel to the hit film since its 2018 release. With follow-ups to the original novel by Kevin Kwan already ripe for adaptation — 2015’s “China Rich Girlfriend,” 2017’s “Rich People Problems” and 2024’s “Lies and Weddings” — and the massive return on its investment Warner Bros. enjoyed, it even feels inevitable. In 2022, it was reported that the sequel was officially on the way after replacing original co-writers Adele Lim and Peter Chiarelli. But it’s seven years later… and nothing.
Earlier this year, however, it was reported that a television series was in development for HBO Max with Lim back on board as the showrunner and director John M. Chu as executive producer. Lim has become a Hollywood powerhouse since her “Crazy Rich” success, writing the Oscar-nominated “Raya and the Last Dragon” and moving into the directing sphere with the acclaimed “Joy Ride...

Golding told host Andy Cohen, “There are scripts hanging around but they haven’t been passed on yet. I haven’t read anything, but I hear it’s promising.”

Henry Golding offered a crazy rich update about the future of the Crazy Rich Asians franchise. While appearing alongside his The Old Guard 2 co-star, Charlize Theron, on a recent episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, the A Simple Favor star opened up about the highly-anticipated continuation of the story which started with the box office-dominating 2018 film. After being asked by Cohen about where the team was at in the creative process, Golding said,

Lisa Lu is a tremendously accomplished person. Born in Beijing in 1927, she gradually became one of the world's most successful Chinese-American actresses. Now, she's getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Lu is well-known to Western audiences as well as Chinese ones. She played the formidable matriarch Ah Ma in box office hit Crazy Rich Asians, and more recently appeared in the TV show American Born Chinese and Death and Other Details. And she also so happens to be one of the oldest actors working today. Lu is 98 years old now.
When she receives her Walk of Fame star, she'll be the oldest person ever to receive one, beating out James Hong. Hong, who is still alive today, was 93 years old when his star was unveiled. I love everything about the Crazy Rich Asians movie, and we've all been eagerly waiting for the promised Crazy Rich Asians 2. There's still not many updates about the second film, but it has been confirmed that a series at Max is coming. While initially thinking this would be with a whole new cast, it sounds like there's several original cast members coming back to reprise their roles.
In an interview with Today, Henry Golding, who played the co-lead Nick Young, suggests that he's returning to the world with co-stars Gemma Chan (Astrid Leong) and Awkwafina (Peik Lin Goh). You might want to sit down for this one. Star Henry Golding just teased some hopes for the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians television show. The television series comes from Adele Lim, Jon M. Chu, and Kevin Kwan. While Golding's teasing doesn't directly confirm reprising his role as Nick Young, the A Simple Favor actor explained to the Today show:
"Everybody’s excited. I was with Nora, Awkwafina, who is a fellow New Yorker, the other night, and we were discussing it. We had Adele Lim come over and visit me and Gemma [Chan] in London not too long ago to discuss where we’re heading. We have a larger, longer-running format because we’re doing a series. We have so much runway to really share the world you kind of got a glimpse of in Crazy Rich. We’re really excited to show more."
Will There Still Be a Movie Sequel to 'Crazy Rich Asians'?...

Crazy Rich Asians came out in 2018, and it's one of the best romantic comedy movies around. And of course, it's filled with drama as well. It was an instant hit, and it's such a joy to rewatch it even to this day. It also had a wonderful cast like Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, Constance Wu, and Henry Golding. Now, the story is coming back. But, it's not in the way we thought it would. And I don't know how to feel about it.
Crazy Rich Asians series in the works at Max
According to Variety, a Crazy Rich Asians television series is currently in development at streaming service, Max. Warner Bros. Pictures, who owns the streamer, is the one behind the film so this makes sense. One of the great things about the movie is the fact that the story was written so well, and that's thanks in part to co-writer Adele Lim.

Following the news that Max is developing a Crazy Rich Asians TV series, Jon M. Chu — who helmed the 2018 blockbuster before his two Wicked films — gave a taste of what’s to come on the small screen.

It was announced last week that Chu and Adele Lim, the film’s co-writer, were both on board the series, with the latter as showrunner. Miramax Films’ musical fantasy comedy Ella Enchanted will officially be heading to a brand-new streaming home soon. The 2004 movie was led by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway in one of her earliest movie roles, following the success of 2001’s The Princess Diaries.
Beginning on March 6, Ella Enchanted will be available for streaming on Prime Video. In the film, Hathaway portrayed the titular role of Ella, a young woman whose fairy godmother granted her the magical gift of obedience. This ability requires her to immediately obey any command she has been given. However, as she grows up, this so-called gift proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, since it gives anyone the power to take advantage of her. During its theatrical run, it received negative reviews from critics and fans of the novel, with a Tomatometer rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. This was due to its lack of faithfulness from the original source material.

We're officially returning to the world of Crazy Rich Asians — just maybe not in the way we originally thought. While there is, allegedly, still a sequel film in the works to the 2018 blockbuster romantic comedy (as far as we know!), Max has confirmed that a series, from co-writer Adele Lim and director Jon M. In 2018, the filmCrazy Rich Asians became a surprise hit, earning $240 million worldwide. The movie, based on the 2013 Kevin Kwan series of novels, was nominated for both Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Awards and one of its stars, Michelle Yeoh, won a SAG award.
Its box office and critical success made it seem like a sequel to the film was the next logical step, but that won’t be the case. Instead, Crazy Rich Asians will be rebooted as a TV series for Max, per The Hollywood Reporter. The movie followed the story of Rachel (Constance Wu), a Chinese-American professor, who goes to Singapore only to find that her boyfriend, Nick (Henry Golding) is a member of one of Singapore’s richest families.

After suggesting the “bar is too high” for a Crazy Rich Asians sequel, Jon M. Chu, Adele Lim, and Kevin Kwan are breaking ground on a development room for a Crazy Rich Asians TV series at Max. Lim leads the initiative as the project’s executive producer, writer, and showrunner. Lim co-wrote the screenplay for Crazy Rich Asians alongside Peter Chiarelli. The charming 2018 comedy won several awards in many ceremonies despite being snubbed by the Academy in every category. The film became a roaring success with audiences and helped boost the visibility of Asian-led cinema in the United States.

After years of starts and stops and development, we may finally get a return to the world of “Crazy Rich Asians.”
A new series is in development from Warner Bros. Television for Max that will be based on Kevin Kwan’s book series and will bring back the 2018 film’s writer Adele Lim to serve as the series showrunner, as well as director Jon M. Chu to executive produce.
The series will be a one-hour drama and is only in development at this stage, so it’s unclear whether cast from the original film, which starred Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, and Gemma Chan, will return.
Lim, who was a co-writer on “Crazy Rich Asians,” is now an EP, writer, and showrunner via her production company 100 Tigers, while Chu is an EP via Electric Somewhere. Kwan, the author of the three books in the “Asians” series, will also executive produce.

We’ve got some crazy great news today for fans of Crazy Rich Asians, as Max has announced the development of a new series centered on Kevin Kwan’s book of the same name. As of right now, things are just getting started on the small-screen off-shoot, which comes seven years after the book received a big-screen telling via Jon M. Chu’s critically-celebrated film. The project hails from Adele Lim, who served as a co-writer on the big-screen version and is also known for her directorial eye behind the 2023 comedy, Joy Ride. Lim will be the title’s showrunner, writer, and executive producer, the latter of which she’ll be joined by Chu under his Electric Somewhere banner, as well as Kwan. As of right now, no release window has been set for the series to make its debut on HBO.

Crazy Rich Asians will finally return, though not as originally expected. Kevin Kwan’s trio of novels will next be adapted to TV, with Max developing a series based on the books. Jon M. Chu, director of 2018 feature, and Adele Lim, the film’s co-writer, are both on board.
The fate of Crazy Rich Asians has been up in the air for years. After the 2018 film starring Michelle Yeoh, Constance Wu and Henry Golding grossed $240 million at the global box office, a sequel was a no-brainer. Warner Bros. Pictures confirmed development on a sequel drawing from novel China Rich Girlfriend was in development within weeks of the opening. But scheduling and the eventual departure of Lim stalled development — as did Chu’s massive commitment to directing Wicked and its upcoming conclusion, Wicked: For Good.

Max’s Crazy Rich Asians TV series has officially opened a development room led by Adele Lim who will serve as executive producer, writer and showrunner. Lim co-wrote the script for the hit Crazy Rich Asians feature from Warner Bros. released in 2018 with Peter Chiarelli.
Alongside Lim (via her 100 Tigers prod co), executive producers will also include Jon M. Chu (via his Electric Somewhere banner), who directed the film, and Kevin Kwan, who authored the novel of the same name that inspired the film and the upcoming series. Warner Bros. TV is the studio.
We understand there have been unofficial conversations with the original cast about possibly returning; however, there is no creative direction for the season, so it would be too early to speculate on the storyline. The box office record-breaking success of "Wicked" is once again proving the crowd-pleasing chops of Jon M. Chu, who had previously demonstrated them via the massive success of a certain swanky romantic comedy to which he was connected long before becoming its director. Based on the eponymous novel by Kevin Kwan, 2018's "Crazy Rich Asians" topped the box office in its release week and went on to gross over $239 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. It's safe to say that it's a movie with a lot of fans.
Thankfully, there are several other films you can queue up if you count yourself as one of those fans. Whether you're drawn to the perfectly executed rom-com plotting, to the Asian American representation, to the themes of familial displacement and culture clash between North America and Asia, to the snarky sense of humor, or to the ritz and sumptuousness of the wedding...

Crazy Rich Asians 2 has received a disappointing update. The Crazy Rich Asians sequel seemed like a guarantee after the 2018 movie, which adapted the Kevin Kwan novel and followed Rachel (Constance Wu) learning that her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) was part of a rich Singaporean family and fighting to impress his stern mother Eleanor (Michelle Yeoh), grossed $239 million against its $30 million budget and earned two Golden Globe nominations. As the novel was the first of a trilogy, an adaptation of the sequel China Rich Girlfriend was announced in 2018, but development has seemingly stalled in the interim.
The Hollywood Reporter recently sat down for an interview with Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu while he was promoting his upcoming movie Wicked. When asked for an update on the sequel, Chu revealed that he wants a script "that's better and has as much urgency" but "we just haven't gotten there yet.

Ever since we learned that Princess Diaries 3 was officially in the works, we’ve been waiting to see which franchise stars will return!
Two decades after the release of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, a third movie is moving forward at Disney with Adele Lim directing.
One star has confirmed that they will be retuning to Genovia. However, talk of a third movie has circulated for years now. In that time, many other cast members have addressed a potential comeback.
Recently, another actor revealed what they knew about the movie, saying that they weren’t sure if they were coming back. Another key star hinted that they might not be involved. However, many others expressed interest. Some of the characters haven’t been seen since the first movie back in 2001, and it could set up some excellent drama for the plot if they all came back.

Adele Lim Joins ‘The Princess Diaries’ As Director, Says New Movie Will Continue the Franchise’s Legacy
It’s been over two decades since ‘The Princess Diaries’ premiered and launched Anne Hathaway to global stardom. Although Michael and Mias romance was one of the highlights of The Princess Diaries, Michael didn't return in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Adapted from Meg Cabots books, The Princess Diaries was one of the best teen movies of the early 2000s. While The Princess Diaries was based on Cabot's first book, The Princess Diaries 2 wasn't based on any specific novel. This meant that the creators of the movie had the freedom to make some changes to the Princess Diaries books, including omitting Michael from the film.
After years of speculation, it's finally been confirmed that there will be a Princess Diaries 3. Anne Hathaway will be reprising her role as Mia Thermopolis and Adele Lim will be directing the film. Given that Michael was one of the most popular characters in the classic teen film, the fact that he wasn't in the second movie raised some questions...
