Image
Lena Dunham is making her return to TV with Netflix’s “Too Much,” which comes with a soundtrack perfect for both crash outs and healing moments.

“Too Much” follows Jessica (Megan Stalter), an American who moves to London after a devastating breakup and meets Felix (Will Sharpe), a charming British musician — mirroring Dunham’s own experience of meeting her husband, British musician Luis Felber. So, it’s only fitting that Felber, who also serves as a writer and executive producer on the show, heads up music alongside Matt Allchin.

From party hits like “London Bridge” by Fergie, “Tap In” by Saweetie and “Girls” by the Dare to tender ballads like “Praying” by Kesha and “Slow Like Honey” by Fiona Apple, “Too Much” has something for everyone.

Episode 1: “Nonsense & Sensibility”

1 Thing Harvey Weinstein, P Diddy, and R Kelly Have in Common, Dame Dash Cut Ties With Every One of Them
Image
Co-founder of Roc-a-fella Records and Rocawear, Damon Anthony Dash, best known as Dame Dash, has often made waves in the industry because of his business acumen. The entrepreneur has contributed to some big companies that have seen immense highs in Hollywood and the music industry. He has been a long-time partner of Jay-Z since both of Dash’s business ventures have the rapper as a co-founder too.

Along with his entrepreneurial spirit, Dash is also known for his straightforward attitude and refusal to take any negativity from anyone else. He speaks his mind freely and chooses to distance himself from anyone who disturbs his peace. The same has reportedly happened with many big names in the industry. It seems like Dash is not afraid to make enemies to keep himself sane in this dog-eat-dog world.

“I wasn’t saying don’t sign Kanye”: Jay-Z Debunked Dame Dash’s Explosive Claim About Trying to Keep Kanye West Out of Rap Business
Image
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter was and still is a big name in the music business. Today, we can see the Empire State of Mind rapper basking in the solace of success along with his wife Beyoncé, who also boasts multiple accolades for her work in the music industry just like him.

But there was a time when Jay-Z struggled to get signed by record labels and things weren’t looking too great for his aspirations as a rapper. This was one of the reasons that led to the creation of Roc-a-Fella Records. Carter, along with record executives Dame Dash and Kareem Burke started the label under which he released his debut album Reasonable Doubt.

While the company functioned for nearly two decades before going defunct, there was a disagreement between Carter and Dash that would’ve ended things much earlier.

Lil Wayne revealed that he’s disappointed that he didn’t get the job to headline the upcoming Super Bowl Lix halftime show, saying that the development “broke” him. “Forgive me for the delay … First of all, I had to get strength. I had to get strength enough to do this without breaking,” Wayne, who has previously voiced his desire to headline the Super Bowl halftime show, said in an Instagram video on Friday. “I thought there was nothing better than that spot, that platform in my city, so that hurt. Now, Weezy himself has opened up about the emotional letdown he’s felt since Jay-Z and the NFL made the decision.

“It hurt a whole lot,” Wayne said on Instagram Live, blaming himself for “not being mentally prepared” for a letdown and assuming he would be picked as the Super Bowl Halftime performer. “I thought there was nothing better than that spot and that stage and that platform in my city. Nicki Minaj Blasts Jay-Z for Not Booking Lil Wayne to Headline Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans
Image
Nicki Minaj has criticized Jay-Z for choosing Kendrick Lamar to headline the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show, arguing that the honor should have gone to Lil Wayne, as the game will be played in his hometown of New Orleans.

“Denying a young black man what he rightfully put into this game for no other reason but your ego,” Minaj wrote. “Your hatred for Birdman, Drake & Nicki got you punishing Lil Wayne?!?!!! Lil Wayne!!!!!!!!!! The Goat?!!!!!!!!!!! Nola what’s good?!!!!!!”

In another post, Minaj wrote, “God forbid if Wayne was to leave this earth right now, the culture would be in mourning. That’s why so many ppl keep saying to give our legends their flowers while they are still around to smell them. Sitting around all day playing games with ppl life & legacy.”

Several other associates of Lil Wayne, including Birdman, Master P, Cam’ron, and Mase, also called out Jay-Z over his decision to book Lamar.

Nicki Minaj, Birdman, and More Slam Jay-Z Over Super Bowl Halftime Show

The people close to Lil Wayne are making it clear they’re not happy with him not being named the Super Bowl Lix halftime show headliner. Nicki Minaj and Birdman both took to X today to air their gripes with the NFL’s (and presumably Jay-Z’s) decision to have Kendrick Lamar headline the February showcase. While they didn’t explicitly name Jay-Z, who has had a hand in producing Super Bowl halftime shows since 2019, it seems pretty apparent what they’re talking about.

The Roots Picnic, held yearly in Philadelphia since 2008, is a special kind of music festival. The lineup this year covered a wide spectrum of hip-hop and R&b, plus country, go-go, and more, with the Roots’ own omnivorous musicality as the guiding force. Daily crowds of 30,000 made the pilgrimage to Fairmount Park to soak up the sun and sounds on June 1 and 2. There were surprise guests (Ghostface! Common! Freeway! Lloyd! Musiq Soulchild!), outstanding collaborations, a couple of disappointing no-shows (Cam’Ron, you were missed), and tons more performances across three stages.

Rapper Cam’ron Explains Bizarre CNN Interview Where He Was Asked About Diddy Video
Image
Longtime New York rapper Cam’ron is explaining his strange CNN appearance this week, where he gave a now-viral non sequitur during an interview in which he was repeatedly asked questions about beleaguered rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Booked for a Newsnight segment that was to have CNN host Abby Phillip discussing the series of lawsuits filed against Combs, which include allegations of sex trafficking, drugging women, sexual misconduct and rape, the rapper who has been on the New York scene since the 1990s told her that he doesn’t know why he was booked for the segment, and then drank a male sexual enhancement drink on air and referenced “getting some cheeks.”

During the segment, Phillip asked him, regarding the controversial video CNN released Friday of rapper-mogul Diddy attacking his then-girlfriend, the artist Cassie, at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016: ”Did you recognize that kind of anger at all, from your experiences?...

Who’s The CNN Booker Who Arranged For This Cam’ron Interview About Sean Diddy Combs? Because It Was A Hot Mess
Image
CNN was hoping to get a little perspective about Sean Diddy Combs and the newly released video of him attacking a former girlfriend in 2016. Instead, they got a lesson on what happens when bookers don’t fully vet a potential guest.

On Monday, rapper Cam’ron was asked to comment about the hotel surveillance video that shows Combs grabbing, shoving, dragging and kicking his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura at a Los Angeles hotel. At first, Cam’ron appeared to play along, saying he doesn’t support domestic violence and “yeah, I was upset when I seen it.”

But when CNN anchor Abby Phillip pressed Cam’ron about whether he ever experienced such anger when hanging with Combs, the rapper seemed confused by the question.

“What do you mean do I recognize him?” he responded. “I’ve seen him and I thought it was disgusting. I didn’t do a zoom in to...

Thanks, CNN, But Cam’ron Would Rather Talk About Sex Supplements Than Diddy
Image
You don’t have to be a Cam’ron fan to be muttering “Oh Boy” after a recent appearance on CNN, when the veteran Mc took questions about Sean “Diddy” Combs and answered with one of the strangest major media interviews in recent memory.

Anchor Abby Phillip began the segment by asking for Cam’ron’s thoughts on surveillance footage from 2016, recently released, which shows Combs assaulting the recording artist Cassie. Cam’ron called the attack “egregious,” adding, “When I seen the video, yeah, I was kind of upset with it. Being that I know him — he’s not necessarily a friend — but yeah, I was upset when I seen it.”

And that’s when things got weird. When asked, “Did you recognize that kind of anger at all from your experiences [with Diddy]?” Cam’ron expressed irritation. “I seen him. What do you mean my ‘experiences’? I seen him, and I thought it was disgusting.

After almost thirty years of denials about his involvement in the death of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, whom he married in 1985, O.J. Simpson passed away on April 10. He died at the age of 76, following a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

In addition to having two kids with Brown, the former NFL player had three children with Marguerite Whitley, his first wife. But while his family is grieving, did you know that a few weeks prior to his death, Simpson had made an awkward joke about ‘confessing’?

During a podcast appearance earlier this year, the father of five made an astounding joke about not confessing while talking about whether or not men should open up to women.

The Real Person Rico From Paid In Full Is Based On
Image
Paid in Full is a criminally underrated gangster movie that explores the origins of the true story it's based on. The character Rico in the movie is based on real-life drug dealer Alpo Martinez, who had a prominent role in Harlem's drug trade. Like in the movie, Martinez became an informant in real life, providing information to the authorities in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Paid in Full dramatizes the turbulent lives of actual 1980s Harlem drug dealers, including the real-life inspiration for the character Rico. Directed by Charles Stone III, the movie involves rapper Jay-Z as a producer along with a star-studded ensemble. Wood Harris plays the protagonist Ace, a law-abiding man who accidentally starts a booming drug business only to face a moral dilemma. Paid in Full is loosely based on a true story, with Ace directly inspired by former drug lord Azie Faison Jr. Mekhi Phifer appears...

Hip-Hop Celebrates Its Golden Anniversary at Yankee Stadium
Image
There was a cipher going on outside the Hip-Hop 50 Live show at Yankee Stadium. One woman took the mic, intently closing her eyes while focusing on her next bar. As I walked away, she rhymed an improvisational derivative of recuperate, before spitting “that’s not even a word, I just be sayin’ shit.” The line set an apropos tone for the day. Hip-hop was bore out of rule-shirking and boundless imagination — and it made its way to “the house that Ruth built” to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

While Queens’ Rock...

Hip-Hop 50: Run-dmc, Slick Rick, Doug E. Fresh, Snoop Dogg, Nas, Lauryn Hill Perform at Yankee Stadium
Image
Returning to hip-hop’s birthplace, classic rappers who pioneered the sound — as well as those who have proudly carried the rap torch — joined forces to honor the genre’s 50th birthday and celebrate its historic and global impact on pop culture.

It was only fitting that a venue as iconic as Bronx’s Yankee Stadium became the home for the eight-hour celebration, which included three dozen performers and nearly 50,000 audience members.

The universal love for rap was at the center of the night, and rappers like Nas and Snoop Dogg owned the night while also honoring those who came before them.

During his set, Nas brought out hip-hop founding father DJ Kool Herc and told the crowd: “This is our love. This is our bloodline.” Herc, 68, earned a standing ovation and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Kool G Rap also appeared onstage alongside Nas,...

New Harlem Festival Inspired by ‘Summer of Soul’ Canceled Because of Extreme Heat
Image
The inaugural Harlem Festival of Culture, which was set to take place this weekend with performances from A$AP Fern, Teyana Taylor, Wyclef and more, has been canceled due to the threat of extreme heat.

Festival organizers announced the decision on Instagram Friday, July 28, citing President Joe Biden’s warning yesterday for Americans to “listen to public officials and stay indoors” because of an ongoing heatwave and poor air quality.

“After strong consideration to this severe weather impacting New York City, it is with a heavy heart that we have...

Conservative Trolls Want to Talk About Rap Music Instead of Jason Aldean. Don’t Take the Bait
Image
All week long, a culture war has been raging around country star Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town,” a turgid power ballad wrapped around an unsubtle warning to protesters and other outsiders: “Try that in a small town, see how far you make it down the road.” To many observers, that sounds uncomfortably close to the kind of threat that the Klan used to issue to civil rights activists, and that modern-day racists continue to spout today. The music video, which juxtaposes stock footage of Canadian protesters...

‘Hip-Hop Is Rock & Roll’: Teezo Touchdown’s Eclectic Style
Image
The first thing that grabs your attention about Teezo Touchdown is his look — especially when his hair is draped with actual nails. When you delve into his music, you might come across a pop-punk ballad, followed by a contemporary hip-hop track. Before you know it, you’re yearning to know more about him. You won’t be alone there: Teezo’s highly unorthodox approach has proved irresistible to some of music’s boldest names, from Tyler, the Creator (who featured him on Call Me If You Get Lost) to Madonna...

Bupkis: Everything You Need To Know
Image
In what feels like a welcome reprieve, Peacock dropped the entire season of Pete Davidson's pseudo-autobiographical series Bupkis in a nicely binge-able package, like the good old days of streaming originals. The show is both not what one thought it would be and exactly what one thought it would be at the same time. As good as the series may be, the fact that it shares quite a few similarities to other, recent series may dull the audience's reaction.

The series was announced in March 2022 with Pete Davidson developing it alongside Judah Miller, who executive produced Davidson's movie The King of Staten Island and has written for Crashing, another pseudo-autobiographical show based on the life of a stand-up comedian (Pete Homes). SNL writer Dave Sirius is the other co-creator. He also co-wrote The King of Staten Island alongside Davidson and Judd Apatow. It's a strong team, and they...

Live From New York, Drake Night at The Apollo
Image
Moody blue lights drench the audience at the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem. We’re in Drake’s bedroom. Or some version of it, at least. The musician born Aubrey Graham is seated on the edge of a neatly made bed, and a dim tulip-shaped lamp stands in the corner of the stage, designed as a replica of the teenage bedroom where he wrote his first songs. His outfit of baggy jeans and a yellow-and-blue basketball jersey complete the tableau. Number eleven, Degrassi High.

Before he appears on stage, we...

French Montana Embodies Rap History And Makes Some of His Own
Image
French Montana has a knack for crafting au courant earworms that pay subtle homage to rap’s illustrious history. After cementing his rep as New York’s most in-demand mixtape maven (under the careful tutelage of ByrdGang iconoclast and self-proclaimed “wave God,” Max B), the Bronx Mc topped the charts in 2012 with “Shot Caller,” which had Ig models and dope boys bopping to the same madcap horns from Lords of the Underground’s grimy 1993 cut, “Funky Child.” It hit the streets like a gleeful tsunami — everyone wanted to ride the wave.

Secret's Out! We Finally Know Who Jojo's Dad Is on Queens
Image
Ever since ABC's Queens debuted, the big question on everyone's minds was: who is Jojo's (Precious Way) father? During the show's premiere episode, we're led to believe that Naomi (Brandy) doesn't know who her daughter's dad is, but we later learn that's actually not the case. Naomi does, in fact, know who Jojo's father is, she just never informed him that she was pregnant with Jojo. However, the truth has finally come to light.

In episode two, all signs initially pointed to Naomi's ex-boyfriend Cam (Cam'ron) being Jojo's dad. When Cam unexpectedly crashes Naomi and Jojo's lunch date, Naomi is taken aback. "I didn't know you had a daughter," Cam tells Naomi. At first, the whole thing just seems like two old friends catching up, but when Jojo puts in her complicated burger order and Cam ends up ordering the same thing, Naomi immediately becomes uneasy. We also later find...
