Idles Tour Diary: Onstage and in the Pit With the U.K. Band
Image
To secure an opening slot for the Foo Fighters in 2017, Idles sent Dave Grohl and Co. a jigsaw puzzle depicting bassist Adam Devonshire reclining on his couch in his underwear. When the British rock band headlined Bowery Ballroom in early February, an enterprising baby band tried its luck scoring a similar opportunity by delivering Idles a pizza, the box reading, “If you build it, they will come.” Guitarist Mark Bowen says the gesture was much appreciated — and that the group is currently “on the shortlist.” Pizza enthusiasts to the core,...

Coldplay’s Chris Martin Deepfaked Himself for Idles’ New ‘Grace’ Video
Image
U.K. post-punks Idles enlisted Chris Martin — both the real one from now and the one from 24 years ago — to help them put together the video for their new song, “Grace.”

The clip is basically the same one Coldplay released all the way back in 2000 for their hit song, “Yellow,” with Martin walking along a dreary, empty beach in the rain. Only in the “Grace” clip is he mouthing along to the Idles song, a feat accomplished with a bit of AI deepfake technology.

The idea for the video came...

Idles Tangk Review: A Delicate Balance of Sound and Sentiment
Joe Talbot
Through his lyrics, Idles frontman Joe Talbot often looks outward for love and healing amid the chaos of a broken world. By contrast, the British band’s fifth studio album, Tangk, sees him reaching inward to find it—despite the chaos around him.

One might expect a certain harshness or violence from an album titled Tangk, an onomatopoeia coined by the band themselves. But the very first sounds on the opening track, “Idea 01,” are lightly swirling piano loops and soft pulsing drums—trademarks of Nigel Godrich, who co-produced the album alongside Kenny Beats and band member Mark Bowen. “Idea 01” is a sleepy, slow opener, after which “Gift Horse”—whose tale of galloping freedom is accompanied by rich, clangy guitars and drums—offers a release in both sound and spirit.

“Pop Pop Pop” marks another quick shift in tone. “Freudenfreude, joy on joy, cheerleader, happy boy,” Talbot declares over a bed of dark synths and feedback.

Watch Idles’ Raucous Performance of ‘Gift Horse’ on ‘Fallon’
Image
Idles stopped by The Tonight Show to perform their recent single, “Gift Horse.” The punk-tinged song, released last month, is an intense rock number that is even more so live.

“Gift Horse” will appear on the U.K. group’s forthcoming fifth LP, Tangk, out Feb. 16 via Partisan Records. The LP was produced by Nigel Godrich, Kenny Beats, and Idles’ Mark Bowen, and follows the band’s 2021 LP Crawler. The band previewed the album with “Dancer,” a collaboration with LCD Soundsystem‘s James Murphy and Nancy Whang.

Idles Drop New Song “Grace” Produced by Nigel Godrich: Stream
Image
Idles have shared “Grace,” the latest single from their forthcoming album, Tangk. Stream it below.

Co-produced by longtime Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich, hip-hop producer Kenny Beats, and the band’s own Mark Bowen, “Grace” is a slow-burning track that takes its time building to the crescendo. “No god, no king,” Joe Talbot sings on the chorus. “I said love is the thing.”

“The song came from nowhere and everything. It was a breath and a call to be held,” Talbot said in a statement. “The only words or singing that came from our sessions with Nigel and I needed it, truly. All is love.”

Tangk is out on February 16th and also includes the lead single, “Dancer,” featuring James Murphy. Pre-orders are ongoing.

Lol Tolhurst x Budgie x Jacknife Lee Release Collaborative Album Los Angeles: Stream
Image
Lol Tolhurst, Budgie, and Jacknife Lee have shared their debut album as a trio, Los Angeles.

A post-punk supergroup of sorts, drummers Tolhurst (formerly of The Cure) and Budgie (formerly of Siouxsie and the Banshees) teamed up with producer Lee for the project, which also features a who’s-who list of collaborators including U2’s The Edge, LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, more.

And though the band admittedly “stole” some of the music on Los Angeles from their musical heroes and their own back catalogs, they made sure to nod to their punk descendants, too: “We asked Mark Bowen from Idles to put some guitar on [‘Uh Oh’] and what we got was sonic destruction design courtesy of the dentist,” Tolhurst says in a press release, while Budgie says the tune draws from The Banshees’ own “Happy House.”

‘Yellowjackets’ Season 2 Trailer Builds Suspense With Florence + the Machine’s Moody ‘Just a Girl’ Cover
Image
Showtime has released the trailer for Season 2 of the Emmy-nominated series “Yellowjackets,” which is accompanied by Florence + the Machine’s new cover of No Doubt’s 1995 hit “Just a Girl.”

The psychological horror series follows a high school soccer team that survives a plane crash in 1996, only to be left deep in the Canadian woods. Through a mix of flashbacks and present day, the show depicts how the athletes transitioned from an elite team into a savage clan.

The second season picks up two months after Shauna disregarded Jackie with bad results. The tensions have grown within the team with winter conditions intensifying, leaving the girls to make impossible decisions to survive.

The show stars Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress, with Lauren Ambrose (as adult Van) and Simone Kessell (as adult Lottie) joining as regulars and Elijah Wood in a season-long guest arc. The second season also features Sophie Nélisse,...

‘Yellowjackets’ Season 2 Trailer Ushers in the Darkness Following That Tragic Finale
Image
The Yellowjackets have brought back the darkness.

The trailer for the highly anticipated second season of Showtime’s hit survival drama Yellowjackets features the adult characters having a realization: There was something dark out there in the wilderness — and they brought it home and are still dealing with it 25 years later.

In its first season, Yellowjackets followed two timelines: the past, when a plane crash left the high school soccer team, called the Yellowjackets, stranded in the wilderness for 19 months in 1996; and the present, to show how the survivors — played by Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress and Christina Ricci — are doing 25 years later.

The trailer shows how the second season will push forward in both timelines. But this season, the show will also pop into the new timeline of 19 months after the crash, when the young characters are saved and begin to unpack the trauma from their time in the woods.

How Kenny Beats and Idles Teamed Up to Explode All Expectations
Image
It was the middle of an extended quarantine during a surge of Covid cases in England at the start of 2021, and hard rock band Idles were in a lockdown of their own. Holed up for nearly two weeks at Peter Gabriel’s residential Real World Studios in Bath, England, the group was working hard to finish recording Crawler, their fourth album, and perhaps their biggest leap to date from what any listener may consider a signature sound for the band.

Before hitting the studio, Idles had brought in prolific hip-hop producer Kenny Beats (Rico Nasty,...
