One of the world’s most prestigious short film festivals, HollyShorts, is coming to London.

HollyShorts will hold its first-ever London edition as part of the L.A.-based festival’s 20th anniversary year and, The Hollywood Reporter can reveal, will present HollyShorts Honoree Awards to a slew of Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated British and Irish short filmmakers.

Recipients of the HollyShorts Honoree Award include Tom Berkeley and Ross White, who won an Oscar in 2023 for their short film An Irish Goodbye; Chris Overton, who won an Oscar in 2018 for The Silent Child; Misan Harriman, who was nominated for an Academy Award this year for The After; and Jamie Donoughue, who was nominated in 2016 for Shok.

The event will also present a special Trailblazer Award to actor James Martin, whose pivotal role in An Irish Goodbye led to him being the first star with Down Syndrome to win at the Academy Awards.

Sundance Institude has unveiled the 10 early-career filmmakers who will receive year-round support through the 2024 Latine Fellowship and Collab Scholarship.

Sundance Institute has announced the 2024 Directors, Screenwriters, and Native Labs fellows.

The Native Lab takes place in person in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from April 29–May 4 and will support four fellows and two artists in residence. The Lab focuses on centring Indigeneity in the storytelling of participants from Native and Indigenous backgrounds and will work on feature film and episodic scripts through one-on-one feedback sections and roundtable discussions with advisors.

Marvel Studios currently has an X-Men reboot in development, which is set to introduce new versions of Marvel Comics' mutants into the MCU. Some mutants from Marvel Comics shouldn't be adapted into live-action, as they are too ridiculous, have pointless powers, or are controversial. Mutant characters such as Marrow, Skin, Adam-x, Stacy X and Wildside, among others, should be left out of the MCU.

“Shtisel” star Ayelet Zurer is set to lead a new Israeli drama titled “The Best Worst Thing.”

In the new show Zurer plays Dr Amalia Levi, a breast cancer specialist who finds a suspicious lump in her chest. As she begins her own breast cancer journey, this time as a patient, she is unexpectedly joined by Micha Hadad (Amos Tamam), a male politician who has also just been diagnosed.

“As they embark on a shared treatment journey together, fuelled by hope and fear, they discover they have more in common than a disease,” reads the logline. “Under the shadow of a ticking clock, Amalia and Micha discover that the worst thing that could possibly happen to them is also the best thing that has ever happened to them.”

The eight-part series, which will premiere on Feb. 19 in Israel on local network Keshet 12, was created by Rona Tamir, Tal Granit, and Sharon Maymon.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the winners of the 50th Student Academy Awards competition. Of the total 2,443 entries from 720 colleges and universities around the world, the Student Academy Awards have chosen 14 student winners to participate in an in-person award ceremony on Tuesday, October 24, at 7:30 p.m., at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Gravitas Ventures has picked up North American rights to upcoming gangland thriller MobKing, which it will release in select theaters and on demand May 26.

The deal was completed by Danielle Gasher, senior director of acquisitions at Gravitas Ventures, and Anthony Caliendo of Button Man Films.

From season 2 picks up with an entire town trapped in captivity, with new twists and revelations coming about. From season 2 is currently streaming on MGM+, and challeges its ensemble of characters in ways unique to each of them. Included among them is the bus passenger Elgin, played by Nathan D. Simmons.

In From season 2, the characters continue to search for a way to escape their bizarre, metaphysical imprisonment in the town, with the unseen menace still lurking in the woods. Elgin remains distrustful of the strangers he finds himself trapped with. However, over the course of the season, Elgin's arc sees him gradually becoming more open and willing to be a team player.

Tim Burgess was joined this week by his fellow Absolute Radio presenter Skin for the latest episode of his podcast, Tim’s Listening Party Skunk Anansie singer, Skin talked about the band’s debut album, Paranoid & Sunburnt, which contained hit single Weak. She revealed that, although the song was written in just one night, it had actually been eight years in the making as it was written about a boyfriend that she had had when she was 16.

WestEnd Films has acquired world rights to Untitled Judo, a political thriller co-directed by Guy Nattiv and actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi (Holy Spider).

The film is currently in post-production. WestEnd Films will launch sales at this year’s European Film Market.

The rebranded streaming service had an appearance at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour Tuesday, and we got some premiere dates for new and returning shows.

We already knew Godfather of Harlem would start the rebrand, with the third season premiering on January 15.

Murf the Surf follows on February 5, while A Spy Among Friends will arrive on March 12.

From Season 2, meanwhile, will touch down on April 23.

Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2014—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2014 to create a unique double feature.

Alec Baldwin and Danny Glover will star in Ambi Pictures Group’s sci-fi from Andrea Iervolino and Lady Monika Bacardi.

Iervolino and Bacardi are financing and producing Andron - The Black Labyrinth and Ambi’s international sales arm Ambi Distribution handles worldwide sales.

Francesco Cinquemani will direct from his screenplay about a group of people plunged into a maze that is being observed by the outside world.

Principal photography will commence this month in Malta in collaboration with the Malta Film Commission and in Italy.

The cast includes Michelle Ryan, Skunk Anansie lead singer Skin, Jon Kortajarena, Gale Harold and Leo Howard.

A week or so ago in a Brighton basement, Den of Geek attended a fun evening organised by the - aptly named, in this instance - arts and entertainment group, Space.

A regular Brighton-based event, Space regularly welcomes luminaries from the creative world to talk to its intimate group. Past guests have been from the world of film and television (Mark Gatiss, Toby Whithouse, Nicholas Roeg, David Morrissey, The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception visual effects artist Paul Franklin, Star Wars, Superman and Raiders of the Lost Ark production designer Norman Reynolds), literature (Ian Rankin), and music (William Orbit, Skunk Anansie’s Skin, Goldie).

Not long ago Wright went out and asked his friends and fans to recommend some movies they thought he may have missed over the last thirty years of his life. The 6th annual Montreal Underground Film Festival presents 3 nights of wild and wooly short films from around the world at various venues around the city on May 12-14.

The fest kicks off with a lineup of 8 short films, plus the World Premiere of Mario DeGiglio-Bellemare’s Main Attraction, about a magician and his resident freaks fending off an eviction from their home. DeGiglio-Bellemare is a member of the Montreal media arts collective Volatile Works and features special effects by underground artist Rick Trembles and Andy Mauro. Zack Snyder has gained a reputation for striking and stylish visuals in films such as 300, Watchmen and Legend of the Guardians - and now he's also hoping to stimulate us on an auditory level.

A host of classic songs have been "wildly reimagined" for the soundtrack album for Snyder's fantasy adventure Sucker Punch, some of them performed by the film's stars.

Sucker Punch: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will hit stores on March 28, 2011.
