Pulp have returned with the rollicking new song “Got to Have Love.” It’s the second offering from More, the English group’s first new album in 24 years, out on June 6th.

With dramatic strings, disco-lite backing vocals, and a snare-heavy drum beat courtesy of Nick Banks, “Got to Have Love” is Pulp’s passionate argument for loving ourselves and one another. “When love disappears, life disappears,” mutters Jarvis Cocker in earnest as the song’s patient bridge unfolds, eventually building to some cathartic instructions about acknowledging our implicit need for love.

Over the past 30 years, Steve Perry has resisted practically all overtures to perform Journey classics onstage, whether as part of a solo tour or a reunion with the band. But on very select occasions, he has been willing to revisit the Journey catalog in the studio alongside a Mount Rushmore figure from the world of country music. It started in 2023 when he cut “Open Arms” with Dolly Parton, and now continues with a new version of Journey’s 1983 power ballad “Faithfully” that he recorded with Willie Nelson to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Farm Aid.

Legendary singers Steve Perry and Willie Nelson have joined forces on a new version of Journey’s 1983 classic “Faithfully,” with proceeds benefitting Farm Aid in celebration of the annual concert and nonprofit organization’s 40th anniversary.

Former Journey frontman Perry reprises his vocals on the rock ballad, while Nelson adds his signature twang on his verses, with the pair duetting on the chorus.

“No one has a voice or vocal phrasing anything like Willie Nelson,” stated Perry. “Singing this duet with Willie has been something I’ve always wanted to do. The Britpop band’s first album in 24 years, More, is out June via Rough Trade, with “Spike Island” being their first offering to longtime fans. After signing to Rough Trade near the end of last December, rumors began swirling that a new Pulp record was on the way. They had also been performing new songs during concerts starting in 2023, which only stoke those flames further.

Brit pop band Pulp have announced their first album in 24 years, More. While the Jarvis Cocker-led group has been intermittently active over the past quarter-century, including a magical reunion tour in 2024, they hadn’t released an album since 2001’s We Love Life. Pulp will return in June with More, their first new album of original material in almost 24 years. As a preview, the band has unveiled “Spike Island” as the first single. It’s streaming below.

As frontman Jarvis Cocker explained in a press release, the album began taking shape as Pulp was touring in 2023. “We practiced a new song called ‘Hymn of the North’ during soundchecks & eventually played it at the end of our second night at Sheffield Arena. This seemed to open the floodgates: we came up with the rest of the songs on this album during the first half of 2024. A couple are revivals of ideas from last century. The music for one song was written by Richard Hawley. The music for another was written by Jason Buckle. The Eno family sing backing vocals on a song. There are string arrangements written by Richard Jones & played by the Elysian Collective.

“A concert is no good unless there’s some magic,” Jarvis Cocker told the crowd, soon after Pulp hit the stage in Brooklyn. “You react to us, we react to you — that summons the magic.” The Britpop gods reached New York last weekend, for two glorious nights, on their long-awaited North American reunion tour. Nearly everyone in the room had spent years praying for these shows, so both nights were full of that magic. “You are about to see the 555th concert by Pulp,” a message flashed on the video screen on Friday.

Pulp are finally returning to North America this fall, marking the Sheffield band’s first tour on the continent in over a decade.

The brief trek will kick off at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on Sept. 8, followed by stops in Toronto, Brooklyn, and San Francisco. The shows will wrap in Los Angeles on Sept. 18 at the Hollywood Palladium.

Pulp’s reunion tour brought the beloved Britpop band to Mexico City for a headlining set at Corona Capital on Friday, where they unveiled a new song called “Background Noise.”

Frontman Jarvis Cocker introduced the new composition, and dedicated it to his girlfriend, who was watching from the audience. Carried by a string arrangement and the kind of introspective, spoken lyrics you’d expect from Pulp, the tune uses its verses to build into a thesis-presenting chorus: “Love turns into background noise/ Like this ringing in my ears/ Like the buzzing of the fridge/ You only notice when it disappears.”

Previously, Pulped played an unreleased song called “Hymn of the North” at a hometown show in Sheffield, England.

The reunion tour is Pulp’s first outing in over a decade, and now, with new music being teased, it’s possible that the band might be eyeing a return to recording.

Pulp kicked off their long-awaited 2023 “This is What We Do For an Encore Tour” at the Bridlington Spa in Bridlington, England on May 26th. The newly-reunited Britpop icons played a set full of fan favorites and deep cuts, marking their first show in a decade: “We are Pulp — I’ve not said that for quite a long time,” vocalist Jarvis Cocker greeted the packed crowd.

Cocker and company tore through the majority of their 1995 masterpiece Different Class, opening with “I Spy” and saving their smash “Common People” until their first of two encores. The set also included some highlights from 1994’s His N Hers like “Do You Remember the First Time?” and “Babies”; deeper cuts like “Weeds” and “Glory Days”; and their 2013 single “After You.”

“An encore happens when the crowd makes enough noise to bring the band back to the stage,” the band said in a statement announcing the reunion last October.

Care Failure, lead singer of Toronto-based alt-rock band Die Mannequin, has passed away at the age of 36.

On March 31, the Toronto Star published an obituary for the singer and guitarist, whose real name was Caroline Kawa.

“She consistently sought to see the best of the human spirit in all she came across. May we continue to see the best in each other in her memory. May her spirit now soar free of pain,” reads the obituary, which adds that donations can be made in her name to MusiCares.

Chris Brown has addressed the recent incident in which he hurled a fan’s phone off stage at his Berlin concert.

On Monday (1 March) night, the singer brought a fan onstage during the performance of his 2007 hit song “Take You Down”.

In between verses, he proceeded to give the fan a lapdance.

However, throughout the performance, she was seen on her phone, presumably trying to record the experience.

At one point, Brown took the phone from her hands and placed it face down on her lap. Yet, as he continued to perform, she picked up her phone again.

Roger Daltrey has been unveiled as the final headliner for the Teenage Cancer Trust’s historic annual Royal Albert Hall concert series.

The Who frontman will close out the cancer charity’s weeklong fundraising series on Sunday 26 March.

Daltrey will be joined by Friends of Teenage Cancer Trust’s Richard Ashcroft, special guest Joan Armatrading and Far From Saints, who will be performing live for the first time.

“After three months in hospital, fighting with all his strength and determination, we are shocked and devastated to have said goodbye to my brilliant, beautiful husband, Steve Mackey,” she wrote, according to The Guardian. “Steve died today, a loss which has left myself, his son Marley, parents Kath and Paul, sister Michelle and many friends all heartbroken.

The accompanying video for the title track off of their forthcoming 26th studio album, The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte, will premiere on YouTube on Friday (3 March).

The 21st edition of Sheffield Doc/Fest kicked off last night with the European premiere of Florian Habicht’s documentary Pulp: A Film About Life, Death And Supermarkets, about Britpop band Pulp.

It was one of three opening films being screened in Sheffield last night, together with Rehad Desai’s South African documentary Miners Shot Down and Thomas Balmes’ Bhutan set documentary Happiness.

With over 3,000 tickets sold across the events, it was the biggest opening night in Doc/Fest’s history.

The Pulp screening took place at Sheffield’s City Hall and was broadcast to 120 cinemas around the UK, including the BFI Southbank.

Forming in 1978 and releasing their first album It in 1983, Pulp became the slowest-burning overnight success in history when the double-whammy of His 'n' Hers and Different Class made them pop superstars in 1994/95.

But rather than trudge us through the Fire to the Promised Island, director Florian Habicht instead picks - more or less - a single day in the Pulp story. December, 8, 2012 - the band's homecoming show after their reunion the year before.

Most of the film is made up of chats (it'd be over-formalising them to call them interviews) with the band, their fans, and the people of Sheffield. By narrowing his film's focus, Habicht has made a tender, charming life in the day of a unique band in British pop.

Each year the British music press gather to collectively invoke the spirit of Orpheus, most beloved of all musicians, in their efforts to discern which up-and-coming band should be anointed this year’s ‘saviour’ of rock and roll. Such a label simultaneously serves as a curse and blessing, for messianic crowns are spiked with thorns and chalices emblazoned with the inscription Next Big Thing are inevitably tainted with poison: previous custodians of the title have imploded under the weight of expectation or failed to further bottle the magic of their first few hit singles. Sometimes mediocre bands get handed the chalice and attain unwarranted levels popularity, which goes to show that consulting with Orpheus is an erroneous task: there can there be no one saviour of rock and roll, nor indeed does indie-rock as a genre currently need saving.

Pulp will be presented with the Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution to Music prize at the NME Awards. The 'Common People' band - who reformed last year for a series of shows including Glastonbury and the Leeds and Reading festivals - will receive the evening's top honour at the music magazine's annual ceremony on February 29. Pulp, comprised of Jarvis Cocker, Russell Senior, Candida Doyle, Mark Webber, Steve Mackey and Nick Banks, have also been confirmed to perform at the awards bash.
