Thousands Sign Pay Equity Petition For Animation Industry’s Female-Dominated Color Stylist Craft
With negotiations set to begin Tuesday for a new Animation Guild contract, more than 2,600 industry figures have signed a petition calling for pay equity for color stylists, the animation industry’s only predominantly female craft, whose artists set the look, lighting and palette of cartoons.

The 3,500-member Animation Guild, Iatse Local 839, hasn’t struck the industry since 1983, but leaders told their members recently that a strike this time around “is always a possibility, if not a probability.” The guild’s talks are separate from the recently concluded negotiations for a new film and TV contract covering some 43,000 members of Iatse’s 13 West Coast studio locals.

The petition, organized by the Animation Guild’s Color Stylist Committee, is yet another sign of the growing movement for gender pay equity in Hollywood’s historically female-majority crafts. As reported here exclusively last week, more than 3,300 industry figures have signed another petition calling...

Matt Bomer and Logan Marshall-Green in Traveler (2007)
Time Travel on TV Today, Ranked From Least to Most Tricky
Matt Bomer and Logan Marshall-Green in Traveler (2007)
Time is not on our side, especially in the era of “peak TV.” Perhaps this is why networks are hopping onto the time travel bandwagon. At this year’s network upfront presentations in May, four of the five broadcast networks plugged shows that revolved around a time travel element at their core.

Taking journeys through the fourth dimension is a concept that has appeared in fiction since the late 19th century, popularized by H.G. Wells’ novel “The Time Machine.” The continued appeal of time travel boils down to wish fulfillment: the desire to visit other eras like a tourist, the yearning to relive or change the past, the curiosity about the future and the ability to squeeze more experiences into our ephemeral lives.

Although Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan disagree on whether time travel will someday be possible based on our apparent lack of visitors from the future, that hasn...

Neil deGrasse Tyson in Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (2014)
Neil deGrasse Tyson gets pretty animated when he starts talking about science. Now, he’s literally getting animated – on Disney Xd’s quirky new ‘toon “Future-Worm.”

Tyson – or “Ndt,” as he’s cheekily referred to on the show – plays a version of himself, America’s best-known astrophysicist. The “Cosmos” host recurs in several episodes of the series.

Watch an Episode of IFC's 'Freaks and Geeks'-esque Animated Series 'Out There' Online for Free
Ryan Quincy, Justin Roiland, and Kate Micucci in Out There (2013)
"Out There," the new series starting on IFC on Friday, February 22nd, is the creation of former "South Park" animation director Ryan Quincy. Aside from also being animated, it has little in common with the Trey Parker and Matt Stone series -- "Out There" is more in the vein of "Freaks and Geeks," a coming of age tale about a socially awkward trio of friends growing up in a small town who happen to be furry monster type things. The tonal similarity to the Paul Feig show is helped along by the presence of Linda Cardinelli voicing Sharla, the crush of protagonist Chad (Quincy). "Portlandia" co-creator Fred Armisen, Megan Mullally ("Will & Grace"), Pamela Adlon ("Louie"), John Dimaggio ("Futurama"), Kate Micucci ("Raising Hope") and Justin Roiland ("Fish Hooks") round out the cast. IFC's made a full episode -- "A Chris By Any Other Name" --...
