Mariska Hargitay is once again remembering Richard Belzer, her late Law & Order: Svu co-star, as a special “heart and soul” who as both an actor and comedian was “brilliant.”

While appearing on NBC’s Today to discuss the latest episode of one of TV’s longest-running series as well as celebrate longtime colleague and friend Ice-t’s recent Hollywood Walk of Fame honor, the actress opened up about Belzer, who died on Feb. 19 at 78.

“What a heart and soul,” she told Savannah Guthrie. “He was family and taught me so much about taking risks and creativity and trust.”

Hargitay added that while working on the series with her, from which he retired as a series regular in 2016, “he brought so much joy to the set.” According to the actress and EP, he also — despite being an “acerbic, quick-witted, brilliant” mind — had a soft spot for children, whom he would “melt” at the sight of.

Richard Belzer, the retired comedian and actor famous for his enduring role as Det. John Munch on programs like “Law & Order: Svu” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” died Sunday in his home at Beaulieu-sur-Mer, France. He was 78 years old.

Immediately after news of the beloved actor’s death broke, several friends and collaborators of Belzer offered tributes on social media. Current and veteran members of the “Law & Order” franchise shared words and pictures honoring Belzer, including Mariska Hargitay, Christopher Meloni, S. Epatha Merkerson, Diane Neal, Ice-t, “Svu” showrunner Warren Leight, and many other figures from the long-running procedural.

“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” alum Diane Neal is weighing in on the debate of glorifying law enforcement.

The long-running Dick Wolf series kicks off its 24th season on NBC this fall, but former cast member Neal is now responding to the criticisms that “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver voiced last week.

“Government and press reports have repeatedly shown that New York’s actual sex crimes unit is set up to fail victims of sexual assault, and its case closure rate is a long way from Elliot Stabler’s fictitious 97 percent,” the “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” host stated last Friday. “The NYPD’s official figures show that they only close about a third of sexual assault cases.”

Oliver added, “Instead of depicting a flawed system riddled with structural racism, the show presents exceptionally competent cops working within a largely fair framework that mostly convicts white people.

A former Law & Order actress agrees with a controversial piece about the show’s flaws.

Diane Neal, who played Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, spoke about John Oliver’s now-famous critique of the franchise.

The HBO host chastised Law & Order for providing an unrealistic take on how police work occurs. That included how it ignores the realities of assault victims rarely finding justice.

Neal asked fans to share their experiences and soon had replies from people about their experiences with the police following an assault.

When last we saw The Good Wife‘s Alicia and Peter Florrick, they were engaged in a scathing, no-holds-barred argument in a service hallway of a Chicago hotel. One of NCIS fans’ favorite recurring characters is bound for the Big Easy.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Diane Neal, on the heels of putting in her sixth appearance on NCIS earlier this month, next will guest-star as Agent Borin on the most-watched drama’s new spin-off, NCIS: New Orleans.

“The U.S. Coast Guard has a huge presence in New Orleans so to send Cgis Special Agent Abigail Borin down to help is an added bonus,” showrunner Gary Glasberg tells TVLine. “Diane Neal is a talented, fascinating, multi-layered actress and we’re thrilled to add her to the Nola mix.

Last time on NCIS, Gibbs and Cgis Agent Abigail Borin (Diane Neal) reunited to stop some pirates in a case involving stolen money from the drug cartels. I love Borin and hope we see her more often. We also had a chance to see McGee take the reins and lead the investigation from NCIS headquarters.

In this week's episode, "Parental Guidance Suggested," the team investigates the murder of a Navy commander's wife and discuss their Halloween costumes. The NCIS Halloween episodes are always awesome.

Well, NCIS fans seem a bit divided after last week's episode temporarily paired Tony with FBI Special Agent Leia Pendergast. It seemed that there was a hint of chemistry between the duo, but the thought of Tony romancing anyone but Ziva is still a touchy subject with many fans.
