Biography

    • Mpilo May is a versatile and award-winning South African film, television and theatre actor based in London.

He has performed in England, USA, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Rwanda, Botswana, Zimbabwe and all across South Africa.

His one-man shows, Pay Back The Curry (2016), State Fracture (2017) and Land Acts (2018) had him nominated for four Fleur Du Cap theatre awards and won him two Naledi Theatre awards. The shows were written by award-winning playwright, Mike Van Graan who is one of South Africa's most prolific - and critically acclaimed - playwrights with 36 plays under his belt.

Mpilo is a Chevening Alumni who has his Masters in Film Producing from Met Film School, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Arts in Bilingual Acting from the University Of Cape Town.

His theatrical highlights include playing William Shakespeare in Shakespeare in Love and Bernardo in West Side Story.

Mpilo co-wrote and performed alongside Gantane Kusch in an award-winning two-hander show called Die Glas Ennie Draad which was based on a true story. Mpilo and Gantane interviewed one of South Africa's most feared active gang leaders who granted him the right to turn his story into a piece of theatre. The play was performed at festivals, theatres in South Africa and at the maximum security prison (Polsmoor) which once housed the gang leader.

You can see Mpilo May on Showmax Streaming platform in Wounds playing Dr Clive Hendricks in an original South African medical drama series.

Mpilo will appear in a new crime thriller mini-series created by Mathew Orton, which stars a cast of celebrated South African actors, produced by Lookout Point and Expanded Media Productions for BBC Studios and MultiChoice Studios.
