William Stanford Davis wants his Abbott Elementary character Mr. Johnson to feel familiar.
Maybe not all of us had a conspiracy-prone school custodian who may offer some surprisingly sage advice in one breath and try to scam you out of $20 in the next. But, we do all know a person who doesn’t quite fit any of the molds society has created for us. That eccentric person who seems to have lived a thousand lives before they came into ours. That, Davis says, is who he hopes Mr. Johnson evokes in between his hilarious one-liners.
“I try to make him an honest, 100% human being. He just has a few quirky ways,” the actor told Deadline during a sit-down conversation at San Diego Comic-Con.
Davis was joined at the convention by much of his fellow Abbott Elementary cast and crew, including creator and star Quinta Brunson as well as Tyler James Williams,...

Finally, we got the sequel we’ve all been waiting for. No, I’m not talking about 28 Years Later, where zombies hang more dong than Thunder Gun. And I’m not talking about Jurassic World, which utterly ignores all known bird law. I’m referring to the second part of the crossover between It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary, which kicked off Always Sunny’s 17th season last night on FX.
The episode shed more light on Dee’s rivalry with Janine over Gregory and covered more of Charlie’s journey towards literacy. It also revealed the truth behind the event’s best pairing: Frank Reynolds and Mr. Johnson. While Mr. Johnson thought Frank was helping him catch a raccoon, it turns out Frank was on the raccoon’s side all along.

It was so fun and iconic to see the gang volunteering at the school in the ABC comedy's season 4 episode 9, "Volunteers." It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia has been running 17 seasons strong when the new installment premieres very soon Wednesday, July 9, 2025 on FX! Since 2005, the raunchy and unruly gang has been making us laugh, and it seems like there's no stopping them even after all this time. However a few years back, one of the stars almost quit, believing the show had reached its peak.
I can't believe that on Aug. 4, Sunny will have reached its 20-year milestone. It's definitely no easy feat for any show. It's become the longest-running live-action American comedy of all time, which is amazing! Even so, 17 seasons and 20 years is a lot. During the series' two-decade celebrations at a panel, the cast, including Glenn Howerton were there. And that's when he expressed his worry about the series during seasons 12 and 13. Here's what he had to say, per Entertainment Weekly:

Abbott Elementary has been one of the most successful network sitcoms of recent years. The show's creator and star, however, is already looking forward to graduation. In a recent interview with Bustle, Quinta Brunson talked about the show's inevitable conclusion and her interest in moving on to new projects. It won't happen any time soon, though: Abbott Elementary has been renewed for a fifth season, which will premiere in the fall.
Brunson is effusive about the show's success with critics and audiences, which has kept the show on the air for five years: "We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans." However, she's looking for projects that will let her escape her Abbott character, perky second-grade teacher Janine Teagues: "I’m always interested in playing against type. I think that’s any actor’s dream.

“Abbott Elementary” star, showrunner and creator Quinta Brunson is looking forward to her next big project.
During a recent interview with Bustle, the Emmy-winner explained that she is “looking forward to moving away” from her role as elementary school teacher Janine Teagues. She added that she knows several cast members who would also “love” to expand to other roles.
“We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans,” Brunson explained. “That being said, I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things.”

With Abbott Elementary going back to school for a fifth season, creator, showrunner and star Quinta Brunson has graduation on her mind.
The Golden Globe winner recently admitted she’s “looking forward to moving away” from roles like that of second-grade teacher Janine Teagues as she also considers how “very time-consuming” the series is for her cast to continue committing.

Even great things have to end at some point. Such is the circle of life, and fans of Abbott Elementarymight feel that sting soon. The sitcom returns for Season 5 this fall, and series creator and star, Quinta Brunson, is already mauling over when the show could come to a close. The show premiered in 2021 and follows a group of the titular Philadelphia public school teachers as they engage with their students, trying to help them succeed. Season 4 saw Willard R. Abbott Elementary School bid farewell to some of its favorite students, which suggests the upcoming season will be coming with a freshness to it. So, when might we say goodbye to knowledge acquisition?
Abbott Elementary has been incredibly successful throughout its run so far, winning four Emmys along the way. Central to the series' theme is Brunson's character, Janine Teagues, who seeks to make an impact on the lives of her students.

What does it take to get your career started in entertainment? Beyond the traditional elements of talent, grit, and charm, a huge part of what makes or breaks people is timing. Before landing his star-turning role as Mr. Johnson in “Abbott Elementary,” actor William Stanford Davis spent over 40 years in Los Angeles keeping himself ready for his shot, even at a moment’s notice.
“You can’t come to Los Angeles claiming that you want to be an actor and live in places like Rancho Cucamonga or Palm Springs or up in beautiful Santa Barbara,” he said on the most recent episode of “What No One Tells You.” “You got to be able to be available.”
Davis shared that more than a bad audition, not being able to show up when casting needs you “can cost you not only a job, but possibly your career.” Though self-tapes have expanded the...

When you’re just starting out as an actor, wrestling with reservations about taking on a particular role, especially when it could pay a few bills or even your rent, poses a challenge.
Then again, actors who go the distance tend to work with intention instead of throwing themselves at anything and everything. In the latest episode of “What No One Tells You,” William Stanford Davis (aka Mr. Johnson on “Abbott Elementary”) told IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking that while “people are afraid to say no,” that one word is key to setting yourself apart.
“They think that saying no means that you’re not gonna get a job,” said Davis, “or that some type of bad spell is gonna be put on you because you said the word ‘no.’ The word ‘no’ is one of the most important things you can say in this business.”

The gang's all here, and the doors to Paddy's Pub are open once more with the trailer for Season 17 of FX's long-running comedy series, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. For their next round of adventures, they're shooting for the stars too, with not just one but two crossovers and a quest to become much more than their "niche" label. In addition to re-establishing their core values, they'll be returning to the halls of Abbott Elementary and sending Frank (Danny DeVito) to join the latest season of The Golden Bachelor to find a "grade-a, prime-cut piece of a--... to love." It'll be pure chaos with infighting, grifting, and law-breaking aplenty as they try to pad their pockets. They'll make their big return, starting with their community service stint at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School on July 9.

The fourth season of Abbott Elementaryended on an explosive yet upbeat note. Toward Season 4's end, Principal Ava Coleman (Janelle James) was let go from her job. At the same time, the teachers and staff of Willard R. Abbott Elementary School had to say goodbye to some students whom they'd grown fond of. This means that Season 5 of the ABC sitcom will begin on somewhat of a clean slate as we delve into new characters and new stories for familiar faces. Looking ahead to the new season, series star Chris Perfetti, who plays Jacob Hill, offered an exciting production update.

Abbott Elementary season 5 gets an exciting update from star Chris Perfetti. William Stanford Davis is "just surprised at how far they'll go sometimes" as you are when it comes to the unexpected details of his Abbott Elementary character Mr. Johnson’s life that the writers feature in every script. In Season 4, for example, Mr. Johnson showed up to school dressed as "Emo Jimmy Butler" for Halloween and busted out singing the Oscar-winning "It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp" at faculty karaoke night.
"What I really love about him is his mystery. You don’t know what he’s going to do next, and you don’t know what his experiences are," Davis tells Gold Derby.
Four seasons into Abbott Elementary, Davis has plenty of thoughts as to why Mr. Johnson continues to love his job as the reliable — and reliably unpredictable — janitor. "He keeps the school spick and span. I went to a school that was like that, and...

Who doesn’t love a good crossover? Some of audiences very favorite episodes are the ones where characters from an entirely different show pop up, like when two “ER” doctors showed up on “Friends,” when Sam and Dean got sucked into an episode of “Scooby-Doo,” or, most recently, when “9-1-1” LAPD sergeant Athena Grant took an unplanned cruise aboard the Odyssey.
Most of the time, these special episodes happen because they are on the same network, or are from the same producer, but sometimes they just happen because they are entertaining as hell … or the show’s creators are big fans of each other, as was the case with Quinta Brunson of “Abbott Elementary” and Rob McElhenney of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
Here are some of our favorite TV crossovers:
Suzanne Pleshette and Bob Newhart in the series finale of “Newhart” in 1990 (Credit: Gale M. Adler CBS) “Newhart” and...

Earlier this year, the worlds of Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia collided in the first half of a Philly-set crossover. The first half took place at the ABC home of Abbott, meaning the Paddy's Pub gang had their usual R-rated antics toned down. However, with the second half taking place on FX's Always Sunny, get ready to see a whole new side of Abbott's teachers. Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson discussed the other side of the crossover in a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
After a conversation with host Jimmy Kimmel that ranged from Brunson's encounter with Jill Biden at the Super Bowl and her experience at Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary special, conversation turned to the crossover. Brunson described the Always Sunny half of the crossover as "way more raunchy than ours." She added, "It was fun! It was fun seeing what Janine,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers from the Season 4 finale of “Abbott Elementary,” which aired Wednesday on ABC and streams Thursday on Hulu.
While “Abbott Elementary’s” Janine (show creator and star Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) are going strong in their relationship, that doesn’t mean that impersonating each other in one humorous sequence during the Season 4 finale came easily for the actors who play them.
The episode, titled “Please Touch Museum,” follows Abbott’s teachers and students on a field trip to the hands-on Philadelphia museum, which is “for babies,” according to the school’s sullen eighth graders. To cheer the preteens up, the museum guide suggests they write a play about their time at “Abbott” — one that roasts their teachers. To make matters funnier, the students cast their teachers to play one another.

The season finale of Abbott Elementary is upon us, as the students embark on their annual field trip. This time, they are on their way to Please Touch Museum after plans to visit the aquarium fell through. As the finale draws near, TV Insider has the first look images ahead of the season finale, which images of the students and Janine (Quinta Brunson), Gregory (Tyler James Williams), Jacob (Chris Perfetti), Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter), Ava (Janelle James), and Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis).
The museum is different for the students, as the museum promotes learning through play. As it is a real venue in Philadelphia, the cast of Abbott Elementary shot the episode on location. The first-look images reveal photos of Ava back at her principal desk after having her role reinstated and Janine, Barbara, Melissa, and Jacob with their students following their suspension for accepting bribes.

Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest has come to an end. The streamer has opted not to renew the gaming workplace comedy series for a fifth season. The decision comes days after the Season 4 finale dropped March 26.
Since it had not been conceived as a series finale, the Season 4 finale will now get a new ending to give fans closure. The updated episode will be made available next week.
“Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build — and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it,” series creators/executive producers Megan Ganz, David Hornsby and Rob McElhenney said in a statement Friday. “To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning.

Creator Quinta Brunson is decorated with plenty of Hollywood accolades for populating her “Abbott Elementary” with memorable and hilarious three-dimensional characters. But sitting with Amy Poehler on her new “Good Hang” podcast, the Emmy winner shared that her own Janine Teagues was met with criticism from Black women because she was not perfectly put together. She remembered it feeling like Janine was expected to be representative of all Black women.
“I’ll be real with you: She’s a Black character … Black audiences have so few representative characters on screen, and Black womanhood alone is so touchy,” Brunson shared. “So when a lot of women were seeing Janine not present as they wanted her to, that became tough — and I understand it.”
She said that her aim is to create character where “the show doesn’t care what the audience thinks,” but that “that was a challenge with Janine.”

Abbott Elementary is submitting the Gang at the Emmys — but not all.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Kaitlin Olson, Charlie Day, and Rob McElhenney, who guest-starred in an Abbott-Sunny crossover in January, are among ABC comedy's guest acting submissions. Conspicuously absent are Danny DeVito and Glenn Howerton, who appeared in the episode as well. Howerton, however, only made a brief cameo (due to scheduling conflicts with Netflix's Sirens) and does not meet the 5 percent screen time rule for guest submissions.
Abbott's other guest actress entrant is Talia Shire, who plays Melissa's (Lisa Ann Walter) mom, Teresa Schemmenti. Keith David, who plays Frank, Ava's (Janelle James) estranged father, and Gregory's (Tyler James Williams) barber, is the other guest actor submission.
These are just the network/studio's submissions; anyone can personally submit themselves, so there's still a chance DeVito and other guest stars appear on the ballot.

The first installment of the Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover event may have brought us a semi-literate Charlie Kelly, a piss-soaked Frank Reynolds and a one-legged love triangle between Janine Teagues, Gregory Eddie and a delusional Dee Reynolds, but the worst is still yet to come, according to William Stanford Davis.
Davis, who plays custodian Mr. Johnson on the beloved ABC sitcom, recently teased what fans can expect on the Sunny side of the series’ collaboration, revealing that the FX(X) take on the crossover is a whole lot less family-friendly than January’s “Volunteers.”
“You got saints and sinners everywhere,” Davis explained during a recent sitdown with Collider.
Taking care to note that “Abbott is the saint part of it,” Davis remained largely tight-lipped on the specifics of the episode. “I’d get in trouble,” he joked.

Linda Lavin’s final role on television will be in “Mid-Century Modern” this Friday, so her co-stars and the sitcom creators made sure to honor the late star at their Hulu premiere on Tuesday.
“Linda Lavin was the most joyous, gracious, amazing person that you’d ever want to meet. She worked from the age of 5 to 87 and went out blazing like the star she was,” Nathan Lee Graham told TheWrap. “She truly was a pro at everything. This woman did everything: she could play the piano; she could sing; she could act, comedy, drama equally as well. She was a light. I call her the spiritual showrunner of our show. She’s the glue, she keeps us going. She’s the puppetmaster, she’s doing all of this tonight. So, she’s here.”
The Tony Award winner and Emmy-nominated actress died in December at age 87 from complications of lung cancer before Season 1 had wrapped.

I’m not the first to note that entertainment studios’ terror of gambling and losing on original stories has made it so that nearly every project that makes it in front of our eyes — including literally all 10 of last year’s biggest movies — belongs to a franchise. We all know the big ones, but this goes beyond the MCU, the Dceu, Star Wars, Star Trek and the Disney princesses: We’re now living in a world where The Big Bang Theory is about to launch its third spin-off. Even shows on AppleTV+ — a platform that, famously, no one watches, and that we just learned is losing its parent company more than $1 billion a year — are becoming franchises: as Mythic Quest spins off the anthology show Side Quest, I think we can officially say franchise fever has gone too far.

If there’s one thing Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest loves, it’s a detour. This has been true since the very first season, which paused midway through for a one-off about two characters we hadn’t met before and haven’t seen since. It’s remained so through subsequent seasons that devoted entire episodes to detailing the backstories of members from the core ensemble, or catching up with a minor character we hadn’t seen in years.
Now it extends all the way to the series’ first spinoff, Side Quest. As the cute title might suggest, this is essentially a Mythic Quest that’s nothing but those standalone chapters — that steps well outside Mq HQ to explore the other corners of the show’s universe, one quirky tale at a time. But as it turns out, a detour’s only a detour when there’s a set path to be deviating from.

Earlier this year, worlds collided when the stars of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia dropped into Willard R. Abbott Elementary School. This summer, it'll be Abbott Elementary's turn to invade Paddy's Pub. Abbott's William Stanford Davis recently spoke to Collider's Joe Schmidt about the upcoming crossover's conclusion. Davis teased the upcoming second half of the crossover, which will be harder-edged thanks to the R-rated nature of Always Sunny:
"You've already seen the Abbott [Elementary] portion of it, [but not] the Always Sunny portion. But you know, you got saints and sinners everywhere. And Abbott is the saint part of it, because I can't tell you what these guys are going to be doing, but it's pretty crazy, and I'd get in trouble. I was told specifically, do not talk about that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia part of the crossover."

In all its ups and downs, Mythic Quest always stays true to its core conceit: a workplace comedy about a video game company, and all the interpersonal baggage that accompanies the creatives tasked with building said games. Side Quest, which Apple TV+ announced as its new spinoff, features a similar, if not identical premise, this time focusing on the plights of the lower-level and developmental employees.
Both the Mythic Quest season 4 finale and the Side Quest premiere will be streaming on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
