Self-Made Media Mogul: How an Unpaid Intern Became a Barrier-Breaking TV Exec
Nely Galan in The Apprentice (2004)
Nely Galán’s first job in media was not an accident, but it was the result of a mistake: Galan, whose family immigrated to the U.S. from Cuba when she was a child, was falsely accused of plagiarism at her Catholic high school. Her parents urged her to ask for forgiveness, even though she’d done nothing wrong.

She didn’t listen. Instead, she wrote a sardonic essay to Seventeen magazine about the experience — which nabbed her an unpaid guest editorship at the magazine in New York City, the publication’s youngest-such guest editor.

The nun at her school also rescinded her accusation.

Bradley Cooper, Olivia Wilde and Jon Hamm are among 113 stars thanking President Barack Obama for introducing new executive orders on gun control this week.

"Like you, and like most Americans, we have had Enough. We have had enough of seeing unthinkable tragedies happen and nothing being done," reads a letter signed by the stars and organized by the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence. "This level of depravity should rattle anyone with a conscience. We have seen how it has visibly."

The letter names recent mass shootings – from Sandy Hook to San Bernardino – as evidence that action needs to be taken.

The Swan (2004)
'Celebrity Swan' Coming To TV
The Swan (2004)
Remember that reality show "The Swan"? Well if you don't, you're about to.

Fox has ordered a celebrity version of the 2004 controversial makeover reality series, Deadline.com is reporting. The network has greenlighted "Celebrity Swan," a two-hour special of the plastic surgery show that will air later this year.

The original show featured two "ugly ducklings" each episode and followed them as they experienced a physical and psychological transformation over a three-month period with the help of a coach, therapist, trainer, dentist and cosmetic surgeons. The woman who looked prettier at the end of the process would compete in a beauty pageant at the culmination of the season. Hence, controversial.

According to Deadline, the creators behind the original extreme makeover show -- Nely Galán, her company Galan Entertainment, FremantleMedia and producer Arthur Smith -- will be back for the special, which will feature female celebrities looking to reinvent themselves for a comeback.

Fox Resurrects Plastic Surgery Makeover Series ‘The Swan’ With Celebrity Special
Fox’s 2004 extreme makeover reality series The Swan is coming back in a celebrity version. The network has greenlighted Celebrity Swan, a two-hour special to air later this year. I hear FremantleMedia and producer Arthur Smith, who were behind the original plastic surgery series, will be back for the special, which will feature female celebrities looking to reinvent themselves for a comeback. They will undergo a physical, psychological and career “extreme makeover” with the help of a coach, therapist, trainer, cosmetic surgeons and a dentist as cameras follow them through the transformative process. Casting is currently underway through The Conlin Co. and no celebrities have been set, though I’ve heard the names of former White House intern Monica Lewinsky and Happy Days alumna Erin Moran as possibilities. Production is slated to begin this spring. The Swan was created by Nely Galán, and her company Galan Entertainment will be producer on the celebrity special.

The Celebrity Apprentice: Bizarro Edition
The Celebrity Apprentice has been a success for NBC. The Apprentice was supposed to be a dead franchise, remember. But, thanks to the writers' strike and the gimmicky celebrity premise, the reality series returned with its most successful season in years and earned an early renewal for another celebrity edition, which will premiere next season. As we know from Dancing with the Stars, these celebrity reality shows like to find certain types of contestants and re-cast each season in a repetitive manner. On Dancing with the Stars, there are always a couple of athletes, always the random barely famous hot chick, and the funny old guy. They even cast Beverly Hills 90210 cast members in consecutive seasons. This got me to thinking about how NBC will cast the next celebrity edition of The Apprentice. It's been such an unexpected success that I doubt Trump and team will stray too much from this season's formula.

The Princess Diaries producer Debra Martin Chase and producer-writer Nely Galan are teaming up to bring Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez's novel The Dirty Girls Social Club to the big screen.

Galan, the former president of entertainment at the Telemundo network, is among the honorees at The Hollywood Reporter's 25 Hispanic Women in Entertainment ceremony today at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. She optioned the film rights from Valdes-Rodriguez. The movie will be produced through Galan's Galan Entertainment shingle.

The story revolves around six Latina women from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds navigating their careers and relationships.

"Knowing how Latinas love novelas, I think Alisa has written the ultimate aspirational novela with six women at the helm that represent all different parts of Latino culture," Galan said.

Valdes-Rodriguez penned the screenplay and is set to executive produce, while Galan and Martin Chase are seeking independent financing. Casting will begin in the next few weeks.

Nely Galan in The Apprentice (2004)
Galan Entertainment is teaming with HBO on a series of mobile mini-telenovelas designed to entertain Hispanic viewers and provide an English "phone book" to those on the go. Titled La Traductora (The Translator), the series recounts the daily experiences of Carmen, an immigrant and her daughter Maribel, who is constantly translating English for her mother. The mobisodes are geared to not only engage but also deliver key phrases in English deemed essential for effective communication in the U.S. Galan Entertainment president Nely Galan, who created and executive produced Fox's reality show The Swan, cited the increasing production of entertainment content created for new-media platforms as instigating the series' creation.

Nely Galan in The Apprentice (2004)
Lifetime Television is ramping up its reality programming in a big way. In addition to the previously reported I Married a Princess, the cable network has ordered 13 episodes of the competition series Ms. Mogul (working title) and a one-hour pilot titled Almost Family and is developing the docu-soap The Big Kahuna (HR 12/7). Ms. Mogul, debuting in the second quarter with a two-hour premiere followed by one-hour episodes leading up to a two-hour finale, features 15 small-businesswomen competing to transform their new business ideas into reality by winning a startup fund of up to $1 million. Each woman will have a media-mogul mentor in her respective field to help her along the way. Creator/exec producer Nely Galan (The Swan) said the show does not have a traditional elimination-style format but declined to be more specific.

Mike Darnell
Fox playing 'Swan' song with makeover reality fare
Mike Darnell
Fox Broadcasting Co. has picked up nine episodes of a makeover show with a characteristic Mike Darnell twist: The 18 female contestants will get plastic surgery as part of their transformations, but the finalists won't be able to see their new and improved faces until after they've participated in the finale, a two-hour beauty pageant. The Swan, set to premiere in the Monday 9 p.m. slot on March 29, was created by veteran producer Nely Galan, whose Galan Entertainment is producing in association with FremantleMedia North America, home of Fox's American Idol mega-franchise, and A. Smith & Co. Galan is executive producing the series alongside Arthur Smith, while Kent Weed is co-executive producer. Darnell, Fox's executive vp alternative series and specials, stressed that in addition to going under the knife, the contestants will be put through rigorous emotional and physical reconditioning sessions as part of a three-month effort to transform "ugly ducklings" into "swans."...
