Wolf Pack – Review
Image
A scene from the Chinese action flick Wolf Pack. Courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment

Wolf Pack is a fast-paced, subtitled action flick from China that’s well worth having to read the dialog – partly because there isn’t too much of it in proportion to the shooting and fighting time. An elite mercenary unit of ex-soldiers opens with rescuing a young humanitarian doctor (Aarif Rahman) kidnapped by terrorists. The main plot involves the bad guys’ effort to destroy an oil pipeline that’s vital to China’s needs, both foreign and domestic.

The leader (Jin Zhang) is a hard-nosed veteran of many battles. Luxia Jiang co-stars as the attractive female member of the team that’s become almost mandatory in recent action flicks from all countries who crank them out. Diego Dati plays the typically brilliant, ruthless head honcho of the terrorists. All three mentioned in this paragraph fill their roles in excellent style.

The Ip Man Movies Showed His Best Character Trait
Image
Donnie Yen's Ip Man movies showed the most important character trait of the kung fu master. The Ip Man martial arts movie series tells the epic, albeit heavily fictionalized, tale of the famed Grandmaster of Wing Chun. Many also know Ip Man for his role as a martial arts mentor to Bruce Lee in his youth, while the Ip Man films showcase the strength of Wing Chun kung fu as a martial art.

The cinematic version of Ip Man portrayed by Donnie Yen in the film series is a near-invincible fighting machine, capable of swiftly overpowering most of his opponents. Ip Man has also fought numerous enemies who have been strong martial artists in their own right and who have given him very challenging fights. Though Ip Man has defeated all the villains of the Ip Man franchise's many fight scenes, a telling trait about him is that he...

Official US Trailer for Mercenary Action Thriller 'Wolf Pack' from China
Image
"A team of specialized warriors." Well Go USA has revealed an official US trailer for a Chinese action film titled Wolf Pack, which is getting a US release in theaters at the end of this month. It opened a few weeks ago in China and hasn't played at any film festivals. This seems to be yet another jingoistic, nationalistic Chinese propaganda movie similar to US action movies about how great US mercenaries are at stopping bad guys from doing anything bad on American soil. During one a mission of the elite military Wolf Pack squad, who are engaged in overseas security work, they discover that foreign terrorist forces have extended their reach into China's energy lifeline. The action film stars Max Zhang, Aarif Lee, Jiang Luxia, Gianluca Zoppa, Ye Liu, and Mark Luu. Looks like another generic action film without anything original about it. ›››

Film Review: Ip Man 3 (2015) by Wilson Yip
Image
Despite the changes in some key roles in the film, with Yuen Woo-ping taking the place of Sammo Hung as action choreographer, Max Zhang the place of the local rival, and Mike Tyson that of the foreign rival, “Ip Man 3” essentially repeats the recipe of the previous film almost to the letter, with one exception, of adding more drama.

The story this time takes place in 1959 Hong Kong, where Ip Man enjoys his fame as the top sifu, respected by both peers and the people of the city. Eventually, however, another man appears, Tin-chi, whose Wing Chun also comes from the same roots as Ip Man. The two get to know each other through their sons, who are caught fighting in the school yard in an effort to show whose Wing Chun is the best. Tin-chi, who is a single father, tries to make a...
