Tiff Special: Shanghai Movie Review
“He didn’t understand how it had happened. Undoubtedly he never would. These moments are like shooting stars. They pass before us, leaving only a luminous trail impossible to decipher. Where do they come from? What do they plunge toward?”

From the novel Z by Vassilis Vassilikos

A controversial political activist fighting the displacement of people in the face of a development project is mowed down as he leaves a rally. When his wife calls into question the nature of the “accident”, the Chief Minister sets up an enquiry, headed by a rising bureaucrat who is expected to confirm the official reports and get things settled quickly. Pitobash at an event for Million Dollar Arm (2014)
Pitobash was discriminated against and I take the blame - Dibakar Banerjee
Pitobash at an event for Million Dollar Arm (2014)
Far from shying away from actor Pitobash's accusations, Dibakar Banerjee actually admits to suffering the same snub and humiliation that his actor has so candidly blurted out. Says Dibakar, "I've gone through what Pitobash has. It's not that I was being demeaned." To go back a bit, Pitobash who is a pivotal player in Shanghai recently accused Dibakar of neglecting and sidetracking the actor during the promotion and marketing of the film. So hurt and angry is Pitobash that he's quoted as openly abusing Dibakar. Dibakar not only accepts Pitbash's allegations and anger, the director drops a hot potato of his own alleging that he was subjected to the same kind of humiliation. "Pitobash is not wrong. He was discriminated against. He spoke not in a pre-meditated planned way but in a spontaneous burst of anguish and humiliation. I understand his sense injured pride. I've felt it too. And...

Shanghai Movie Review
Portrayal of politics in Bollywood has always been sketchy. Barring a Rajneeti or a Gulal, movies have rarely jumped deep into the intricacies preferring instead the ‘Most politicians are corrupt except a few who are too honest for their own good’ depiction. Not Dibakar Banerjee though. Since his Khosla Ka Ghosla, Dibakar has always managed to give us characters which are believable – not black or white but a mix of both. In Shanghai, he once again gives us a no-holds-barred look at ‘Bharatnagar’ where there’s a price for every development, a price to be paid by the common man. Adapted from the political thriller ‘Z’, a novel by Vassilis Vassilikos, Shanghai is the story of a how a development project by the ruling political party manages to cause chaos directly and indirectly in the lives of the protagonists. Dibakar has a unique way of unfolding the story and I...
