London’s Historic Evening Standard Newspaper Plans To Revive Acerbic Art Critic Brian Sewell In AI Form As It Stops Daily Presses & Fires Journalists
Image
Exclusive: He was one of the most feared and revered British art critics of his generation — and now, nearly a decade after his death, Brian Sewell could be about to wield his pen once more.

Deadline understands that London’s historic Evening Standard newspaper has been making plans to revive its former writer using artificial intelligence.

Two sources said AI Sewell has been assigned to review The National Gallery’s new Vincent van Gogh exhibition, titled Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers.

One person said the plans were discussed at the highest level of the Standard and in consultation with Lord Lebedev, the newspaper’s proprietor. Dylan Jones, editor-in-chief of the Standard, did not respond to requests for comment.

It is not clear how the AI will work or if the Standard has permission from Sewell’s estate. The critic was survived by his partner, the artist Dean Marsh.

The idea...

Taylor Swift Is “Not Important,” Chides Courtney Love; Hole Singer Also Takes Swipes At Beyoncé, Madonna & Lana Del Rey
Image
With a new BBC radio series now launched, Courtney Love is once again proving the power of the adage “go large or go home.”

In a wide ranging interview with the UK’s Standard today, the former Hole front woman puts forth her take on some of the biggest names in the music industry. Let’s just say, Love bites in deep in the newspaper, to quote from her 1998 tune “Celebrity Skin,” to get her pound of flesh from Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Madonna and recent Coachella headliner Lana Del Rey.

“Taylor is not important,” the People vs. Larry Flint star says of the superstar.

“She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love added.

The contrarian opinion on Swift is a big shift from where Love was on the Folklore singer just over two years ago.

Image
Amid last week’s fervor of her This Is Me… Now album release, Amazon Prime Video debut and press tour — as well as being named a chair of the 2024 Met Gala — Jennifer Lopez made a pit stop in Dubai for a surprise performance at the opening of the One&Only One Za’abeel Hotel.

Alongside Mark Ronson, who was DJing the lavish 400-person fete celebrating the luxury hotel group’s first vertical urban resort, Lopez, in a sequin jumpsuit and hooded fur-coat, popped-up in the DJ booth, taking the audience through a medley of her songs including “Jenny From the Block,” “Get Right” and the new “Can’t Get Enough.” This was a first-time collaboration for Lopez and Ronson (the Oscar- nominated producer of the Barbie soundtrack). Idris Elba followed with a DJ set into the early morning hours.

This moment was part of the spare-no-expense grand debut of One&Only One Za’abeel,...

David Fricke at SXSW 2019: 10 Great Musical Discoveries
Can a music festival have a mid-life crisis? In its 33rd year, over two weeks in Austin, Texas, SXSW made its biggest headlines in the opening interactive phase, hosting a widely reported forum of prospective Democratic candidates for president. The SXSW film festival featured major premieres and director Q&As, like a spring-break Sundance with a Texas drawl. And a new SXSW sideline – gaming – drew huge lines at the Austin Convention Center. The original founding energy of SXSW, the music festival, was spread out over an entire week, but big...
