Dinklage plays a composer who writes an opera about his affair with tugboat captain Marisa Tomei, in a comedy from Rebecca Miller that has something of Normal People
Author and film-maker Rebecca Miller isn’t known for humour exactly, but she brings a sprightly sort of sweetness and preposterous innocence to this quirky-naive romantic comedy that she has written and directed, something with wit and fun but also ultimately an almost childlike seriousness - like a Woody Allen movie or a screwball but played at two-thirds of the speed and with fewer cynical wisecracks.
The excellent cast brings a prosecco sparkle. Peter Dinklage is Steven Lauddem, a celebrated opera composer, difficult, demanding and now creatively blocked, married to fashionable New York therapist Patricia (Anne Hathaway), a gorgeous fashion plate with a love of neatness and an obsession with nuns. Steven is stepfather to her teen son Julian (Evan Ellison) who...

You would need a heart of stone to leave Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me without wanting to pick up sticks and live on a tugboat, preferably one steered by Marisa Tomei.
Tomei’s tugboat captain Katrina, with her softly weathered face, earthy humor and somewhat sociopathic “love” addiction, is a simply fabulous romcom heroine, if She Came to Me can be described as a romcom. And in Peter Dinklage, at his most darkly glowering as the perpetually panic-stricken, creatively blocked composer Katrina targets with her romantic zeal, she has her perfect foil. Props to Berlin Film Festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian for nailing She Came to Me: light but pungent, it is a perfect opener.
Not that this is a two-horse show: in the screwball tradition, there is much more going on here than a middle-aged meet-cute. At the outset, Miller swings between the rarefied opulence of...

No genre of the last few decades can get on my nerves like the indie quirkfest. You know: those movies that keep poking you in the ribs to giggle at their cutely addled characters with their adorable eccentricities — I’m talking woe-is-us hipster comedies like “Pieces of April,” “Lars and the Real Girl” and the pop-crossover “Citizen Kane” of the genre, “Little Miss Sunshine.” The trouble with these movies is that even as they pretend to be lifesize, they’re too conscious about packaging their prefab weirdness; they’re edgy sitcoms minus the laugh tracks. But Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me,” which opened the Berlin Film Festival today, demonstrates how the indie quirkfest can be resonant and real, with characters who have soul instead of a chewy center.
The movie’s main figures aren’t just suffering from off-kilter dilemmas — they have problems we might characterize as everyday mental illness.

She Came to Me has designs on being a grand opera, but it’s definitely more of what the British call a panto. Opening at a swanky cocktail reception as a male tenor offhandedly begins singing the famous “Habanera” from Carmen, we’re introduced to the sketchily imaged beau monde existence of one Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage), blocked opera composer extraordinaire. He’s toasting his first commission following a breakdown, through which he met and then wed his psychiatrist Patricia (Anne Hathaway), but artistic inspiration again eludes him. They enjoy a cosseted, Brooklyn townhouse-inhabiting existence, familiar from Woody Allen and earlier Noah Baumbach pictures––a hint at the weirdly dated manner of this film where lead characters are immune from the expected satire, humbling, or cross-examination, and instead indulged for unfunny farce.

The consistently disjointed ensemble dramedy “She Came to Me” never settles on a sensible tone to match its anxious, but well-meaning characters, most of whom are neither so ridiculous nor so tragic to be either laugh aloud funny or convincingly dramatic.
Writer/director Rebecca Miller (“Maggie’s Plan”) celebrates her protagonists’ variable qualities with mixed results in this comedy of cringe-y errors, which follows two teenagers who get caught up in their high-strung parents’ romantic crises. The movie’s older cast members, led by Peter Dinklage, Anne Hathaway, and Marisa Tomei, add some value to Miller’s lifeless scenario, which trails after Dinklage’s creatively blocked opera composer, his muse, and his elusive psychiatrist wife, played with typical poise by Hathaway.
Miller struggles to capture some qualities that Dinklage, as panic attack-prone composer Steven, uses to describe the anti-heroic lead of his new opera. Steven takes inspiration from Katrina (Tomei), a sardonic,...

The Berlin Film Festival kicks off this evening with the gala world premiere of Rebecca Miller’s She Came to Me. Ahead of the opening night out-of-competition screening, Miller met the Berlinale press corps alongside cast members including Anne Hathaway, Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig and Evan Ellison.
Hathaway is also a producer on the multi-generational story that’s set in New York, but she was quick to note that even though this is an independent movie, her “heart beats for (all) film, and the more types of them the better.”
The Oscar winner clarified, “I think sometimes we think of these things as isolated from each other. But right now I think the way we’re all participating in films and the way we all kind of are unsure as to what the future of audience culture is, I think it’s important to love all types of...

Peter Dinklage has spoken candidly about turning 50 and weighing up his future as an actor over the next three decades.
The “Game of Thrones” star leads Rebecca Miller’s new film “She Came to Me,” which opens the Berlin Film Festival on Thursday. In the movie, Dinklage plays Steven, a moody classical composer struggling with an oppressive writer’s block that prevents him from delivering his next opera.
At a press conference ahead of the premiere, the film’s cast was asked how they deal with creative blocks of their own.
“I’m 53. I wonder if I want to be an actor for the next 30 years,” said Dinklage. “It’s a fork in the road. It’s a common story when you hit 50: there’s a fork in the road and you either wait for inspiration or you seek it out, and I intend to keep seeking it out.

Chicago – Sometimes all it takes is a glance at a film’s poster to know where it’s stepped wrong. The poster for “My Sister’s Keeper” shows photogenic stars Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin smiling at each other, while their saintly co-star (Sofia Vassilieva) drifts below them, blowing bubbles. Anyone who has read Jodi Picoult’s book (on which this film is based) will know that there’s no reason why these two characters should be smiling at each other, except to fool audiences into thinking this is some kind of heartwarming feel-good drama. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what filmmaker Nick Cassavetes intends to transform his source material into, and the resulting film fails to grapple with the issues Picoult’s book boldly addresses.
Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

"My Sister's Keeper" is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray Hi-Def.
The family drama, available from Warner Home Video, was released on November 17. Based on the best-selling novel by Jodi Picoult, it follows the story of a family struck by tragedy in a story that Joe Morgenstern of The Wall Street Journal refers to as ".heartfelt and deeply affecting."
The movie tells the tale of the Fitzgerald family, whose lives revolve around oldest daughter Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), who has had leukemia since the age of 2. Though mother Sara (Cameron Diaz) and father Brian (Jason Patric) have run themselves ragged keeping the family afloat despite mounting medical bills and a juvenile delinquency streak in their neglected oldest son Jesse (Evan Ellingson), the most put-upon member of the household is youngest child Anna (Abigail Breslin), who was purposely conceived to be a donor of bodily materials for her sister. But when Kate needs a kidney transplant,...

She surfs. She acts. And Cameron Diaz makes a really mean chili cheese fry. In her latest movie, My Sister’s Keeper, Diaz plays onscreen mom to Little Miss Sunshine Oscar-nominated actress Abigail Breslin, CSI: Miami's Evan Ellingson and Medium's Sofia Vassilieva. During production, the role continued off screen, too, when Diaz cooked lunch for them in her trailer. "I made them guacamole and chili cheese fries and fajitas," Diaz, 36, told People at Wednesday night's premiere of the film, based on novelist Jodi Picoult's bestseller about a young girl who sues her parents. Does she consider herself a budding Iron Chef?...

How do you go head to head with one of the summer’s most anticipated blockbuster movies? You do it by crafting a masterpiece on family dynamics that should draw everyone but teenage boys and young adult males. Based on Jodi Picoult’s novel by the same name, My Sister’s Keeper takes you into the family life of a child with cancer. Exploring the boundaries of what is ethical in keeping your child alive, you find yourself wrestling with the choices the family made and wondering what lengths you would go to for your own child.
As Sara (Cameron Diaz) and Brian (Jason Patric) struggle to make the right decisions for their sick child, Kate (Sofia Vassilieva), we see how it affects the other two kids. Older brother Jesse (Evan Ellingson) is the one that gets neglected to the point of basically being invisible. And while younger sister Anna...

If there.s a starmaking vehicle this summer, it.s The Hangover. I mean the My Sister.s Keeper. Teenagers Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vassilieva and Evan Ellingson are knockouts, and carry the film.s heavy, adult level material with remarkable skill. Cameron Diaz goes against type in a beautifully executed dramatic role, which changes her game and probably will change her career. Nick Cassavettes.s take on Jodi Picoult.s book about a girl dying of cancer is thoughtful and unsentimental. It varies from the book in major ways. But taken on its own terms, it has a quiet and relentless power to move. Try not crying! And it.s not just a sob inducing dramatic closer, it.s the total journey as, over and over again,...

Director Nick Cassavetes returns with his screenwriting partner from .The Notebook,. Jeremy Leven, for .My Sister.s Keeper.. The film is a shameless tearjerker that will make you cry, but believe me, you will not feel guilty from doing so.
Cassavetes smartly chose to frame .My Sister.s Keeper. as a character-driven study. If he allowed the material.s decidedly melodramatic nature rear its ugly head, then the film would have just been a Lifetime Movie Channel special. Instead, .My Sister.s Keeper. is definitely a keeper and a great counterprogramming for those who wish to escape the .Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. crowd.
Based on the beloved novel by Jodi Picoult, the film posits a thought-provoking question: if one of your children is dying and is in need of a rare bone marrow match, would you order a doctor to make you...

I have no idea if this will become a regular thing for me since I believe judging a film too much based on its marketing material is a wrong-headed thing to do, but as the release date for My Sister's Keeper gets closer and closer I can't help but get more and more irked by its existense. First off, I originally thought this film was about a girl who was conceived as a genetic match with the hope she could prolong her cancer-ridden sister's life, but when it came time to call in the favor the family decided against it. So as a result the 13-year-old daughter wanted to sue her parents for emancipation and the rights to her own body so she could save her sister's life. Wrong In fact, this uplifting story is quite the opposite. The family wants the genetically conceived offspring to live up to her purpose,...

New Line has debuted the trailer for the Nick Cassavetes drama My Sister's Keeper today over on Yahoo. This stars Cameron Diaz, Jason Patric, Abigail Breslin, Evan Ellingson, Sofia Vassilieva, and Alec Baldwin. The trailer is pretty straight forward and does a great job of explaining the story, so I don't think I need to say much. I will, however, say I was delightfully surprised. This is another one of those films, like Away We Go, that sort of came out of nowhere. I didn't even know it existed until today and its got quite an impressive cast. It looks like quite a heartwarming and simultaneously heartwrenching family drama.
