Matty Beckerman’s unsettling extraterrestrial thriller, Alien Abduction, will be landing on VOD and in limited theatrical release via IFC Midnight on April 4th and we had a chance to catch up with the director and discuss all things extraterrestrial.

Based around the real-life Brown Mountain Lights phenomenon down in North Carolina, a vacationing family winds up taking a much longer ride than they had planned for. Below, Beckerman himself talks in detail about the film and what inspired him to look up to the stars to find his latest inspiration.

DC: I’ve seen a lot of found footage movies, more than I care to even mention, and few of them were as effective as this one actually is. The Brown Mountain Lights are based on an actual phenomena, correct?

Mb: Oh yeah, it’s very very real. I’ve seen the lights myself and taken video of them and pictures of them.

Chicago – Remember that scene in “Ghostbusters” where Sigourney Weaver slides toward a hellish demon while pinned to a chair? Or the utterly chilling moment in “Ju-On” where the contorted body of a vengeful spirit crawls toward its latest victim? Or how about that little indie movie about a young couple plagued by an inexplicable onslaught of paranormal activity?

If you’re even vaguely familiar with these cinematic touchstones, then you will have no problem identifying their blatantly plagiarized copies in Todd Lincoln’s heinously inept jaw-dropper of a wannabe horror show. Oh, it’s a horror show, all right. Just listen to the way actress Julianna Guill delivers her first line of dialogue as if she’s reading it for the very first time. Or observe the pathetic attempt of a major studio to mimic the cruddy handheld photography of found footage hits while completely failing to understand their subtlety or suspense.

Hitting theatres this week is Warner Bros.’ new horror film The Apparition, coming to us from director Todd Lincoln. Taking on the form of a supernatural/paranormal movie, The Apparition hopes to separate itself from the pack by offering up a new take on the “ghost story” formula.

Director Todd Lincoln is making his feature film debut with The Apparition and last week, we had the chance to sit down with him and discuss the film. He talked to us about the challenges of making your first feature, what inspired him to make the film, why he went with a PG-13 rating and more.

Warner Bros. will be releasing The Apparition this Friday, which involves a group of students who are able to create a spirit during a parapsychology experiment. This is the first feature film from director Todd Lincoln and I had a chance to ask him about his start on From Dusk Till Dawn, the true story that inspired the film, and setting this movie apart from your average ghost story:

I understand that you first worked on the set of From Dusk Till Dawn. What was your involvement with the project and how did that experience convince you to pursue career in filmmaking?

Todd Lincoln: I had always wanted to become a filmmaker and had been into horror movies and the macabre. During my senior year of high school, I had read that Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino were going to begin production on From Dusk Till Dawn.
