This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha Looks Back on 24 Years of Rajiv Rai’s Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat
Image
In another feature as part of his This Day That Year series, Subhash K Jha looks at Rajiv Rai’s Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat which released in 2001.

Rajiv Rai whose earlier techno-savvy products like Tridev and Mohra created a psychedelic stampede in the theatres, leaves us with mixed feeling about his latest film. Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat is Rai’s mellowest effort to date. Never before has the snowcapped splendour of the by-now cliched Alpine summits in Switzerland been captured with so much emotion and passion.

Right away, full credit must go to Rai’s cinematographer P.S. Vinod for giving Pyar Ishq … a richly textured almost-fairytale look of Scottish wonderment and Swiss sensuality. The lyrical quality that Rai’s well-written-in-parts screenplay endeavours to represent through its quadrangular romance is far more eloquent in the visuals.

Not that the film lacks finer, delicate moments. Rai’s aesthetically appealing work demonstrates a...

This Day That Year: Anubhav Sinha’s 2018 modern political masterpiece Mulk
Image
Turning the focus on the brilliant 2018 release Mulk, Subhash K Jha presents a new installment of This Day That Year feature and director Anubhav Sinha speaks about the making of the drama.

Whose land is it anyway? At a time when the Indian Muslim finds himself isolated like never before, Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk serves as a jolting reminder of how far into the darkest recesses of distrust and animosity, terrorism has taken the blame game.

It is very hard to believe that Sinha whose earlier credits include fluff stuff like Tum Bin and Ra.One, has actually created this modern political masterpiece which attempts very successfully to humanize a community that has been demonized by some negative elements. And yet Anubhav Sinha’s doesn’t take sides, doesn’t make the Indian Muslim community a portrait of injured innocence.

What it does do—and full-marks to Anubhav Sinha for...

This Day That Year: Anubhav Sinha’s Dus Completes 20 Years
Image
In a new installment of his feature series This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha refocuses on Anubhav Sinha’s Dus, a slick action flick with and all star cast, which just celebrated 20 years since its release.

This film is so cool, you probably need sunglasses to watch it. Unlike its thriller predecessors like Sanjay Gupta’s Kaante, Vikram Bhatt’s Elaan, and Rajiv Rai’s Asambhav, Dus isn’t phony-cool. Nor does it doesn’t seem like a poor country cousin of the Die Hard and Mission Impossible series.

Sure, the screenplay writers Yash and Vinay have borrowed huge chunks—sometimes without alteration—from several Hollywood actioners. And the whole cool-dude attitude that every protagonist wears like designer clothes is straight out of the ultra-chic Men-in-Black prototype that serves as an imperialistic role model for large-screen heroism.

Nevertheless, you have to hand it to Anubhav Sinha. He handles the...

“Metro… In Dino, Love Actually Knot” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Some things never change. Pritam and his fellow musicians are still singing and playing on the rooftops of skyscrapers, while down below, the world goes on with its rituals of cute courtship and unnecessary breakups.

Obviously inspired by the mother of all segmented cinema, Love Actually, Anurag Basu tells an uneven but finally satisfying saga of four couples in fractured, incomplete relationships who try to find a middle ground between a compromised relationship and a breakup.

Some of it, especially the track featuring Ali Fazal as a struggling musician and Fatima Sana Sheikh as a his insanely patient pregnant girlfriend, work. Others don’t. C’est la vie!

What works wonderfully for me—though I doubt it will connect with the average viewer—is the musical format. The choreography of some of the musical pieces is exceptional, especially in one performance in a pub where couples sing about how they first met.

This Day That Year: Anubhav Sinha’s Article 15
Image
In a new edition of his feature series This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight in Anubhav Sinha’s hard hitting crime drama, Article 15, which released in 2019. We also hear from the director about casting and working with Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead role, and how he felt Article 15 was a story that had to be told.

Anubhav Sinha’s stunning film says a lot of things we don’t really want to hear about social discrimination in the cow belt areas. Article 15 takes us to a dusty little town in Uttar Pradesh where a sophisticated liberal cop (Khurrana) joins duty and immediately stumbles onto a horrific caste crime when two girls are gang-raped and hung from a tree. A third girl is missing. Sinha imparts to the search for the girl a ‘thriller’ element that in no way over-dramatizes the film’s incessantly grim mood. The...

John Ritter and Jim Belushi in Real Men (1987)
Real Men Season 1 Review: Unlearning Toxic Masculinity with Laughs and Heart
John Ritter and Jim Belushi in Real Men (1987)
Real Men (Maschi veri), an Italian dramedy created by Letizia Lamartire and Matteo Oleotto, follows four middle-aged friends—Luigi, Mattia, Riccardo and Massimo—who reluctantly join a workshop aimed at unlearning entrenched notions of manhood. Set against the backdrop of contemporary Italy’s obsession with social-media influence and public image management, the series balances sharp satire with heartfelt moments of self-examination.

From the very first seminar scene—where the men are confronted about “frat-boy bravado” and “male pride”—Real Men establishes a tone that oscillates between farcical comedy and genuine drama.

In 2025, global audiences are grappling with shifting conversations around gender roles, much as Indian parallel cinema has long interrogated patriarchy through intimate portrayals like Masaan’s quiet reckonings or Anubhav Sinha’s Tumhari Sulu, which highlight personal transformation against societal norms.

Real Men taps into this zeitgeist by using humor—vibrating-toy mishaps, Tinder-setups gone awry—and candid dialogue to...

This Day That Year: Subhash K Jha On Anubhav Sinha‘s Thappad
Image
This time in his terrific This Day That Year feature series Subhash K Jha looks at Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad, which released in 2020 and featured the brilliant Taapsee Pannu.

Damaged humanism, fractured emotions, and flawed relationships are the crux of Great Cinema. If there was no Auschwitz, there would be no Schindler’s List. If Madhubala had not died so young, would we still think of her as being so unattainable? And if Romeo and Juliet had lived happily ever after, would Shakespeare’s play have become a timeless classic?

Thappad is a flawed but important film on a fractured marriage. Like director Anubhav Sinha’s earlier monumental works Mulk and Article 15, Thappad tears at the hypocrisy of the middle class to show how pathetically short we fall as a collective nation when it comes to basic human rights even within the four walls of private homes.

The issue in Thappad is ostensibly solvable.

Netflix Hits Legal Turbulence in India Over Hit ‘Ic 814’ Hijack Series
Image
Netflix is embroiled in a legal dispute with Asian News International (Ani) over the streaming giant’s hit series “Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack.”

The drama, directed by Anubhav Sinha, is a fictionalized version of the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814, which was en route from Kathmandu to New Delhi when it was diverted to Kandahar, Afghanistan. The series is currently No. 2 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English shows.

In a suit filed with the Delhi High Court, the news agency alleges copyright infringement over archival Ani footage used in the series and wants four episodes of the six-episode show to be taken down. Netflix declined to comment when approached by Variety as it is an ongoing legal matter. The court will hear the matter on Friday.

The series has experienced turbulence since it started streaming on Aug. 29. Some social media users took umbrage with the fact that the hijackers...

Netflix India’s Content head summoned surrounding the controversy for Ic 814 – The Kandahar Hijack
Image
The content head of Netflix India, Monika Shergill, has been summoned by the Indian government in response to the growing controversy surrounding the web series Ic 814 – The Kandahar Hijack. The series, which focuses on the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight by Pakistan-based terrorist group Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, has faced significant backlash on social media. Critics have accused the creators of the show, Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Srivastava, of intentionally altering the names of the hijackers to “Bhola” and “Shankar,” names that are typically associated with Hindu deities, which has sparked outrage.

The series is based on the book Flight Into Fear: The Captain’s Story by Devi Sharan, who was the captain of the hijacked flight, and journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury. It features prominent actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Vijay Varma, and Pankaj Kapur. The story recounts the dramatic events of December 24, 1999, when Indian Airlines flight 814, carrying 191 passengers, was hijacked shortly after taking off from Kathmandu,...

The True Story Behind Ic 814 The Kandahar Hijack
Image
Marking the return to television for its director, Indian filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, Netflixs Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack brings to life the true story of a nightmarish hijacking that may put to shame even Apple TV+s Hijack, which is largely fictional. Based on the book Flight into Fear - A Captains Story by Captain Devi Sharan (who piloted the doomed flight) and journalist Srinjoy Chowdhury, the Indian Netflix series will chronicle the events surrounding the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814 (Ic 814) on 24 December 1999. Although the hijacking has paved the way for multiple Indian films throughout the years, the story will be adapted for television for the first time, featuring an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Dimple Kapadia (Tenet) and Arvind Swami. ‘Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack’ Review: A Tale of Resilience and Moral Dilemmas
Image
Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a six-episode limited series, with which noted Indian filmmaker Anubhav Sinha debuts on the Ott platform. The history behind the hijacking of the Indian Airlines flight Ic 814 is already available in the public domain, so a fictional show inspired by these real-life events may become a frivolous attempt if it doesn’t carefully balance factual accuracy with creative freedom. But Sinha, along with his co-writer Trishant Srivastava and Adrian Levy, who takes credit for the story, respects the gravity of the events. They craft a riveting narrative that not only captures our attention but also compels us to engage deeply with the unfolding drama, even as we remain acutely aware of the outcome. It is a tense hijack thriller that refuses to adhere to the tried and tested tropes of high-octane action sequences or principal characters blurting out nationalistic rhetoric or jingoistic dialogues to...

Netflix’s Ic-814: The Kandahar Hijack revolves around the tragic events of December 24th, 1999, when an Indian passenger plane was hijacked by some Islamist militants while it was flying to Delhi from Kathmandu. At that point in time, the flight had some 176 passengers onboard, along with the crew and their brave captain, Devi Sharan. Despite the Indian government’s initial reluctance to negotiate with terrorists, the officials managed to bring the passengers back to India safely. Anubhav Sinha’s Ic-814 plays like an intense thriller that realistically captures the ordeal hostages went through. So, without any further ado, let’s find out more about these unsung heroes through our cast and character guide.

Captain Devi Sharan

Vijay Varma once again proves his incredible talent by portraying Captain Devi Sharan (or Sharan Dev) in Ic-814: The Kandahar Hijack. We’ve seen Vijay deliver powerful performances in Darlings and Mirzapur, and he doesn’t disappoint here either.

‘Ic-814 The Kandahar Hijack’ True Story: Where Is Real-Life Captain Devi Sharan Now?
Image
Netflix’s Ic-814 The Kandahar Hijack, created by Anubhav Sinha, is based on a tragic incident that was documented pretty well by the media back in the day. Apart from the media, a lot of films made earlier have been loosely based on the Kandahar hijacking. Captain Devi Sharan has also written a book titled “Flight Into Fear: A Captain’s Story,” where he has spoken about his experience on the hijacked flight and all that he had to endure when he was stuck in the cockpit with a gun pointed at his head. Most of the things shown in the series pertaining to Captain Devi Sharan actually happened in real life. Vijay Verma has portrayed the character of Captain Devi Sharan on screen. Considering Vijay Verma’s character is being treated as the protagonist, I felt a little disappointed after watching the series, as his character was not at all fleshed out.

“Ic 815 The Kandahar Hijack Defines The Edge-of-the-Seat Experience” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
For six gripping and flab-free episodes of Anubhav Sinha’s revisitation of the Kandahar hijacking, I forgot to breathe. Yes, it is that engaging. So for those who may want to ask, ‘Why another series on the oft-visited Kandahar hijack episode?’ the answer is elementary: no matter how many times you visit a shameful chapter of history, for example the holocaust, you come up with a new perspective on what precipitates a historic mess up of this magnitude.

In this case, the hijacked plane had landed for emergency fuelling in Amritsar. The hijackers could have been nabbed at this point in the crisis. Redtapism blew our chances. As it often does.

Anubhav Sinha doesn’t make the same mistake. He reconstructs the entire episode with a vigour that repudiates any technical error. Sinha is in his element here, mixing the authenticity of documentation with the rigours of fictionalization. The end-result is steady ….and heady.

Image
Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack, directed by Anubhav Sinha, is the story of how terrorists from our neighboring nation had the audacity to hijack a plane and coerce the Indian regime to adhere to their demands. The relationship between the two nations was already weakened after the Kargil War, where the Pakistani army, under the leadership of General Pervez Musharaff, infiltrated Indian territory. For the longest time, they denied any sort of involvement and put all the blame on the Mujahideens. So, let’s find out what happened in Ic 814’s ending, what was the motive of the hijackers, and if the Indian diplomats were able to save the passengers on board.

Spoiler Alert

What demands did the hijackers place?

Once the Indian delegation, under the leadership of Ranjan Mishra, got to know that Ibrahim and Amjad Farooq were related to Masood Azhar, they knew exactly what they wanted. However,...

Netflix’s ‘Ic 814’ Recap (Episodes 1-6) Explained: Were The Taliban Involved?
Image
The Kandahar Hijack is often cited as an example of the failure of Indian diplomacy during a crisis. The delayed decision-making, the fear of taking on the onus, and the lack of a clear vision resulted in the loss of an innocent life and a seven-day-long hijack of Indian Airlines Flight 814. Directed by Anubhav Sinha, Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack dives deep to understand the delayed negotiation and the impact that it had on the passengers.

The series is an adaptation of Flight Into Fear by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury, starring veteran actors Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapoor as the chiefs of the crisis management group. The series also features Vijay Verma as Captain Sharan, Patralekhaa Paul as flight attendant Indrani, and Dia Mirza as Shalini Chandra, editor of Indian Headlines. Ic 814: The Kandahar Hijack marks Sinha’s first time directing a series, and while the use...

‘Ic 814: The Kandahar Attack’ Netflix Review: Less Of A History Lesson, More Of A Tragedy Cosplay
Image
There is a pretty thick line between using history to educate audiences and using history to benefit from certain (problematic) political trends that are being promoted through the world of entertainment. Now, there’s no doubt about the fact that there are so many unbelievable events happening nationally and internationally that it’s difficult to document everything so that the common man can be aware of such occurrences. And highlighting these incidents through movies or shows is necessary. But the act of repeatedly telling a well-documented incident via several movies feels odd. I mean, if a real-life story has been adapted in the form of feature films five times already, then artists should understand that taking yet another swipe at it will make it seem like they’re milking a tragic story to stoke certain nationalist sentiments. Well, I guess the makers of Ic 814: The Kandahar Attack weren’t hit with that realization,...

The nearly three-minute video opens with a tense scene in the cockpit, where Vijay Varma, playing the pilot, is terrified as a terrorist points a gun at him. The militants are then shown torturing the passengers.

We learn that there are a total of 176 passengers on board, but the hijackers have made no demands. While many blame Vijay for taking off from Amritsar airport, his wife, played by Pooja Gor, has unwavering faith in him. The trailer also shows Indian and Pakistani diplomats in conversation, trying to resolve the crisis. The video ends with Vijay attempting to land the plane, communicating with Lahore Atc, and stating that the aircraft has run out of fuel.

Srikanth Box Office Collection Day 5 (Early Trends): Rajkummar Rao’s Film Earns Exactly The Same As Yesterday – Will He Stick To The Brilliant Plan?
Image
Srikanth Box Office Collection Gives A Hope For The Rajkummar Rao Film ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

Srikanth, on its fifth day, has performed surprisingly at the box office, and it seems like Rajkummar Rao‘s film is moving ahead in a very strategic manner. In five days, the grand total of the film will stand at 15 crore in India, and it would be interesting to see if the biopic sticks with the plan.

Srikanth Box Office Collection Day 5

According to the early trends, the biopic helmed by Tushar Hiranandani collected 1.75 crore – 1.9 crore at the box office on the first Tuesday – as much as it collected on the first Monday, which is quite rare.

On the first Monday, Srikanth witnessed a 68% drop at the box office, earning 1.75 crore, and on Tuesday, it might have earned the same amount without any drop or jump, which might be a good strategy to hold the numbers.

Srikanth Box Office Collection Day 1 Might Bring Rajkummar Rao A Breather! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Rajkummar Rao’s Srikanth has opened to positive reviews at the box office, and the opening day collection of the film is hinting at a decent run over the upcoming week. However, it is much better than the actor’s last release at the box office.

Srikanth Box Office Collection Day 1

According to the early trends, the biopic by Tushar Hiranandani might open in the range of 2.20 – 2.40 crore. If it goes past this mark, then things might work very well in the film’s favor; otherwise, it might be a decent opening for an actor who has been struggling at the box office for a long time.

Srikanth is a heartfelt story of a man who believed in himself rather than doubting his abilities due to his physical disability. He turns the wheel of fate, and...
