Sherlock Holmes and all things concerning the iconic detective seem to be the flavor of the moment. The prospective Young Sherlock series, led by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Morris Chestnut's Watson highlight the surging interest in the character once more. The CW released a hotly-anticipated new mystery series, Sherlock & Daughter, on April 16 as part of this new wave of adaptations of the character developed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The show takes on a unique approach to Sherlock Holmes, who is played by David Thewlis, as it saddles him with a young, clever woman, (who might well be his daughter), who is gifted with getting on his nerves. The first season was mapped out for eight episodes, with the season finale airing on June 11. So, will there be a second season of the drama mystery?

At the time of this writing, Sherlock & Daughter had not been greenlit for a second season.

The CW has unveiled an official trailer for a new series called Sherlock & Daughter, yet another fun new Sherlock Holmes reboot with a new twist or two. The crime-solving mystery TV series created by Brendan Foley, based on the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, will debut this month on The CW and streaming on Discovery+. Sherlock Holmes faces a sinister case risking friends' lives. American Amelia joins, seeking her father after her mother's murder. Despite differences, they solve a conspiracy and her mother's case. Amelia also sets out to prove the great detective is her long-lost father. Starring David Thewlis as Sherlock Holmes, Blu Hunt as Amelia Rojas, Dougray Scott as Professor Moriarty, Antonio Aakeel, Orén Kinlan, Gia Hunter, Ivana Miličević, and Paul Reid as Inspector Bullivant. Looks fun but obviously a gimmicky series for The CW fans to enjoy.

One of the problems of the award season industrial complex that takes over film discourse in the early months of the year is that it tends to reduce great films to talking points. It also encourages groupthink, even if some of the nominated films are, well, deserving of those nominations. There’s the predictable pattern of acclaim, backlash, backlash to the backlash, and then maybe a few awards and the hopes of a short memory about how the awards campaign went.

While the Original Song Oscar shortlist is typically good about spreading the wealth around, three movies dominated close to half the spaces. Barbie nabbed noms for three songs, while The Color Purple and Apple Original Films’ Flora and Son got two each. Of the 15 spots, Warner Bros owns five of ’em between Barbie and Color Purple.

After earworm-filled musical dramas “Once,” “Begin Again” and “Sing Street,” “Flora and Son” marks a notable first for writer-director John Carney: it’s the first time he wrote a song for a film that’s designed to underwhelm. “I always thought, what would it be like if you started a song and you just didn’t get the response that you’re supposed to get in a musical?” Carney says about the central song in the AppleTV+ feature starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

“Flora and Son” tells the story of Dublin-based Flora (Hewson), a young single mom who is struggling with her life and especially her teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). She digs a guitar out of the trash, but Max is not interested — he only wants to make music using Garage Band and his laptop. “I did not know that we were going to do that,” admits Joseph Gordon-Levitt about his unconventional first day in Ireland to film “Flora and Son.” For our recent webchat he explains, “So I showed up in Ireland and we’re scheduled to start shooting, but a couple days before, we had some recording studio time booked. I show up at the recording studio, and this is exciting, I’m an actor, I don’t usually get to go to a recording studio,” he recalls. “‘What are we recording today?’ And [director] John’s like, ‘I don’t know, we’re going to figure that out.’ That day, Eve and John, and John’s musical partner Gary, the four of us, made a song together in a day.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Flora and Son, John Carney’s latest indie ode to music that stars Eve Hewson in a breakout role.

Written and directed by Carney, whose credits include the song-centered Once, Begin Again and Sing Street, the film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where Apple Original Films jumped on it, scoring one of the fest’s splashiest acquisitions after an all-night bidding war. It was Apple’s biggest deal in Park City since landing eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Coda in 2021.

Hewson, the daughter of U2 frontman Bono, stars as a single mom in Dublin who looks to use a shared love of music to break through with her troubled teen son Max (Orén Kinlan), who is heading down the wrong side of the tracks.

“I was terrified. This was the last thing I’ve ever wanted to do in my life! Honestly, I would rather swim with sharks,” admits “Flora and Son” star Eve Hewson about singing live on-screen. “But the part was so good. Working with John was so good. Stop Making Sense, the remastered concert film that sowed delight at TIFF, opens on 300 Imax screens in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Ireland. Locations Stateside number 260 ahead of a nationwide release next week.

The 1984 Talking Heads extravaganza from Jonathan Demme is presented in its new iteration by A24 — meaning the decades-old movie can now extend its reach to a new, younger audience that is A24’s core fan base. Opening numbers are hard to gauge since there aren’t many comps but there are parties, discos, stars and sellouts with film looking at about $1.5 million, including Thursday previews.

A 40th anniversary large-format special premiere screening at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month had people dancing in the aisles and broke Imax records. It was the company’s highest grossing live event, earning $640.8k and selling out 25 screens across 165 Imax locations in North America and the BFI Imax in London.

John Carney’s musical-comedy “Flora and Son,” which was acquired by Apple Original Films after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, is one of the streamer’s multiple awards contenders this year, most notably for best original song.

With 18 original songs in the feature, deciding which one to put up for Academy consideration was a daunting task. Variety has learned that Apple will submit the “High Life” track composed by Carney, Gary Clark and star Eve Hewson. The song is performed in the movie by Hewson, Orén Kinlan, Jack Reynor and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

With his 2009 musical romance Once, writer-director John Carney laid the groundwork for all of his subsequent films. September is almost here. Summer is winding down, and Fall is in full swing. For the broadcast networks and streamers, that means it's time to roll out their new fall content. This Fall will look slightly different for the ever-aging linear television due to the ongoing dual WGA and SAG strikes. However, since streamers do not follow the outdated broadcast TV season, they're able to program year-round with little interruptions. Apple TV+ is set to launch into the Fall with several new and returning hit shows and movies.

Apple TV+ is one of the newer streamers on the scene, launching in November 2019 at roughly the same time as Disney+. However, it wasted no time establishing itself with hit original series like The Morning Show, Severance, Silo, and Ted Lasso, among others.

On the movie side of things, Coda became the first film distributed by a streaming service to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

The first single has been released from the soundtrack of Apple’s musical drama “Flora and Son,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eve Hewson. Titled “High Life,” the single is an emotional yet optimistic track about a motherhood, performed by Hewson and her co-star Orén Kinlan.

While she might be the daughter of Irish rockstar Bono, Hewson said she did not enlist her U2 frontman father for help on the project. “I’ve learned so much from him, in terms of life presence, stage presence.
