“Crime Is Blissfully International” Says ‘Sherlock & Daughter’ Team About Expanding the Universe in Season 2
Image
Sherlock Holmes and all things concerning the iconic detective seem to be the flavor of the moment. The prospective Young Sherlock series, led by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and Morris Chestnut's Watson highlight the surging interest in the character once more. The CW released a hotly-anticipated new mystery series, Sherlock & Daughter, on April 16 as part of this new wave of adaptations of the character developed by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The show takes on a unique approach to Sherlock Holmes, who is played by David Thewlis, as it saddles him with a young, clever woman, (who might well be his daughter), who is gifted with getting on his nerves. The first season was mapped out for eight episodes, with the season finale airing on June 11. So, will there be a second season of the drama mystery?

At the time of this writing, Sherlock & Daughter had not been greenlit for a second season.

David Thewlis & Blu Hunt in 'Sherlock & Daughter' Series Full Trailer
Image
"Listen and learn!" "You have my word as your daughter." The CW has unveiled an official trailer for a new series called Sherlock & Daughter, yet another fun new Sherlock Holmes reboot with a new twist or two. The crime-solving mystery TV series created by Brendan Foley, based on the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, will debut this month on The CW and streaming on Discovery+. Sherlock Holmes faces a sinister case risking friends' lives. American Amelia joins, seeking her father after her mother's murder. Despite differences, they solve a conspiracy and her mother's case. Amelia also sets out to prove the great detective is her long-lost father. Starring David Thewlis as Sherlock Holmes, Blu Hunt as Amelia Rojas, Dougray Scott as Professor Moriarty, Antonio Aakeel, Orén Kinlan, Gia Hunter, Ivana Miličević, and Paul Reid as Inspector Bullivant. Looks fun but obviously a gimmicky series for The CW fans to enjoy.

Christian Gallichio’s Top 10 Films of 2023
Image
Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.

One of the problems of the award season industrial complex that takes over film discourse in the early months of the year is that it tends to reduce great films to talking points. It also encourages groupthink, even if some of the nominated films are, well, deserving of those nominations. There’s the predictable pattern of acclaim, backlash, backlash to the backlash, and then maybe a few awards and the hopes of a short memory about how the awards campaign went.

Thus, creating a top-ten is always a bit tough. It’s a mixture of subjective and objective critiques, personal preferences mixed with universally regarded favorites. With that, there’s been more than enough written about Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Holdovers, etc. that...

Warners Dominates Oscars Song Shortlist With ‘Barbie’ & ‘Color Purple’; Possible First-Time Category Nominees Include Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo; Diane Warren’s “The Fire Inside” Only Disney Song
Image
While the Original Song Oscar shortlist is typically good about spreading the wealth around, three movies dominated close to half the spaces. Barbie nabbed noms for three songs, while The Color Purple and Apple Original Films’ Flora and Son got two each. Of the 15 spots, Warner Bros owns five of ’em between Barbie and Color Purple.

Warner Bros has been pushing the Barbie soundtrack, produced by A Star Is Born “Shallow” Oscar winner and 7x Grammy winner Mark Ronson, in a major way this season with meet-and-greets and screenings for the latter, as well as performers Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and even Ryan Gosling. All three shortlisted songs from Barbie –“Dance the Night,” “What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken”– already are nominated over at the Golden Globes. When has there been a juggernaut from one movie between the Globes and Oscar shortlist?

‘Flora and Son’ Director Explains ‘Bad Chorus’ in Film’s Key Song
Image
After earworm-filled musical dramas “Once,” “Begin Again” and “Sing Street,” “Flora and Son” marks a notable first for writer-director John Carney: it’s the first time he wrote a song for a film that’s designed to underwhelm. “I always thought, what would it be like if you started a song and you just didn’t get the response that you’re supposed to get in a musical?” Carney says about the central song in the AppleTV+ feature starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

“Flora and Son” tells the story of Dublin-based Flora (Hewson), a young single mom who is struggling with her life and especially her teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). She digs a guitar out of the trash, but Max is not interested — he only wants to make music using Garage Band and his laptop. So Flora decides to learn to play, and finds washed-up songwriter Jeff (Gordon-Levitt) offering guitar lessons online,...

“I did not know that we were going to do that,” admits Joseph Gordon-Levitt about his unconventional first day in Ireland to film “Flora and Son.” For our recent webchat he explains, “So I showed up in Ireland and we’re scheduled to start shooting, but a couple days before, we had some recording studio time booked. I show up at the recording studio, and this is exciting, I’m an actor, I don’t usually get to go to a recording studio,” he recalls. “‘What are we recording today?’ And [director] John’s like, ‘I don’t know, we’re going to figure that out.’ That day, Eve and John, and John’s musical partner Gary, the four of us, made a song together in a day.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

‘Flora And Son’: Read The Screenplay For John Carney’s Latest Ode To The Power Of Music
Image
Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Flora and Son, John Carney’s latest indie ode to music that stars Eve Hewson in a breakout role.

Written and directed by Carney, whose credits include the song-centered Once, Begin Again and Sing Street, the film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where Apple Original Films jumped on it, scoring one of the fest’s splashiest acquisitions after an all-night bidding war. It was Apple’s biggest deal in Park City since landing eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Coda in 2021.

Flora and Son hit theaters in late September before launching on Apple TV+.

Hewson, the daughter of U2 frontman Bono, stars as a single mom in Dublin who looks to use a shared love of music to break through with her troubled teen son Max (Orén Kinlan), who is heading down the wrong side of the tracks.

'It's not something I've ever wanted to do': Eve Hewson had to overcome singing fears for Flora and Son
Eve Hewson had to conquer her "fear of singing" for 'Flora and Son'.The 32-year-old actress – the daughter of U2 frontman Bono and activist Ali Hewson – plays the title role in the musical comedy-drama and surprisingly confessed that she was terrified of using her vocals for the movie.Speaking at Deadline's Contenders Film: Los Angeles panel, Eve said: "I just thought, 'I could not let this person get away from me. I have to play this part. And I'm just going to have to get over my fear of singing – it's not something I've ever wanted to do – and just go for it.'"And it's ended up being such a rewarding experience on many different levels, but (on) almost sort of psychological-emotional level for me, it's like I faced my fear and I've moved past it and I feel pretty good about it."The movie tells the story of...

Eve Hewson Had To Confront A Fear Of Singing To Star In ‘Flora And Son’ – Contenders Film L.A.
Image
By diving headlong into the title role for Flora and Son, Eve Hewson — the daughter of U2 frontman Bono — conquered her fear of singing, the actress said at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles in a panel with co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the film’s composer and primary songwriter Gary Clark.

Hewson, who played instruments before she turned to acting, said she jumped at the chance to play Flora in spite of the vocal work that the part would demand because she loved the script and the character — a struggling but very spirited single mother in Dublin trying to make peace with the wayward adolescent son she bore as a teenager.

“I just thought, ‘I could not let this person get away from me. I have to play this part. And I’m just going to have to get over my fear of singing — it’s not something I’ve...

‘Flora And Son’ Songwriter-Composer Gary Clark On How He And Director John Carney Found The High Life – Sound & Screen Film
Image
In Apple Original Films’ Flora and Son, single mom Flora (Eve Hewson) is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son Max (Orén Kinlan). Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, Flora tries to occupy him with a beat-up acoustic guitar. With the help of a washed-up L.A. musician (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Flora and Max discover the transformative power of music.

In order to build up believable chemistry between its leads in the film and tenderize the relationship between mother and son, songwriter and composer Gary Clark first had to build a relationship with director John Carney, a feat Clark would find was three decades in the making. At Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film event, Clark reflected on the oddly coincidental meeting that set their now frequent collaboration partnership on full course.

“When John first called me, we’d never met, and the only...

‘Flora and Son’ Director John Carney on the Difficulty of Making ‘High Life’ Sound Properly ‘Sh*te’
Image
As is true of all his films, “Flora and Son” started with writer-director John Carney mining from personal experience. “The big story for me was my mother, and I thought about my own relationship with music when I was young, dragging my mother around music shops. What did that feel like for her,” the filmmaker said in an exclusive clip that shows his artistic process both writing the film, and the original songs like “High Life” that are featured in it.

Although he is unique in the extent to which he composes the music for his own films, Carney begins work on a new project like most writer-directors do: he starts with the screenplay first. “Otherwise, it’s going to be like a jukebox musical where the script doesn’t matter and you’re just drawing the dots between songs,” Carney said to IndieWire over Zoom.

Composer Gary Clark On Making Flora and Son Musically Fabulous
Image
Remember the joy that came from experiencing the 2016 hit film, Sing Street? The film chronicled a 1980s Dublin kid who starts a band to escape his rough family life. Director John Carney (Begin Again) was at the helm of that endeavor, and composer/original songwriter Gary Clark wrote "Drive It Like You Stole It," the film’s memorable song, which went on to win Best Original Song at the Nashville Film Festival, Best Song at the Atlanta Film Critics Society Awards, and was nominated for Best Song at the U.S. Critic's Choice Awards.

Clark and Carney team up again in Apple TV+’s uplifting film Flora and Son, yet another heartwarming endeavor that tracks the transformational power of music and how people find connection because of it. As composer, Clark worked closely with Carney to capture the heart of the Dublin-based film, which finds a single mom sparring with her son.

‘Flora and Son’ Director John Carney Wants Movie Musicals to Push Past Atmosphere and the ‘Best Songs’
Image
“Flora and Son” was an impossible movie three years ago. From “Once” to “Sing Street,” director John Carney has found different ways to bring not just song but the joy of creating music to characters who desperately need it. But he also continually wants to complicate what music is and can be to someone — not every breakthrough is meant to be an elaborate song and dance and not every piece of music can be enough to push someone in the right direction.

The idea of the woman who would become Flora (Eve Hewson), seeking an escape from her troubled son Max (Orén Kinlan) by learning guitar, felt very contemporary with one problem: Carney couldn’t see her actually leaving her flat to take guitar lessons. So he tried to write a version where she took video lessons on her laptop from failed songwriter Jeff (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).

“I had written 20 pages...

‘Flora and Son’ Director John Carney Defends Eve Hewson’s Casting and Explains Why He Won’t Make a Studio Movie
Image
Musicians often have a signature style, and for Irish writer-director-musician John Carney, it only makes sense that his films have one, as well.

Carney’s brand of musical drama usually tells a relatable story about the healing power of music, and his latest film for Apple TV+, Flora and Son, is no exception. As a child in Dublin, Ireland, Carney’s world was forever changed when he was gifted a guitar by his mother, and so he wanted to explore that idea with a single mom named Flora (Eve Hewson) and her troubled teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). Flora’s secondhand gift of a guitar doesn’t impress Max in the way that she expected, but she eventually realizes through Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s online guitar teacher, Jeff, that she can still use the instrument to hopefully repair her broken family.

There’s been renewed interest in nepotism throughout the entertainment...

Flora and Son Review
Image
Plot: Flora (Eve Hewson) is a hard-partying young mother living in Dublin with her teenage son, Max (Orén Kinlan). He’s a would-be delinquent constantly in trouble with the cops, while her ex (Jack Reynor) is a well-meaning but unreliable flake. When she finds a guitar in the trash, she decides, spur of the moment, to take online guitar lessons. Her teacher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) turns out to be kind-hearted and sympathetic, and soon she discovers that music could be a way that finally allows her to reach her son.

Review: When it comes to making movies about the healing power of music, there’s simply no one better than John Carney. He’s directed a couple of classics: Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street. Flora and Son is very much in the mode of those other films, telling a profane, hilarious, and touching story about how even the most troubled...

What to watch September 29, 2023: Movie awards contenders
Image
Fans of America’s most idiosyncratic director are in luck: Wes Anderson’s second film of the year is now just a few clicks away. It seems almost guaranteed to earn him an Oscar nomination, and it’s the movie on this list that’s likeliest to break through in any category.

The contender to watch this week: “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar“

Big-name directors could monopolize Best Live Action Short Film at next year’s Oscars, with Pedro Almodóvar and Wes Anderson having each made movies that clock in under 40 minutes. “Henry Sugar” is the first of four Roald Dahl adaptations Anderson has shepherded for Netflix, this one starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a wealthy 1930s gambler who finds a fantastical way to cheat. It’s dense, delightful, and arguably a more impactful distillation of Anderson’s style than his other 2023 movie, “Asteroid City.” Three other shorts, including “The Swan...

Flora And Son – Review
Image
Does something magical happen when you create music? Many folks believe that. Perhaps a main proponent of that notion is Irish filmmaker John Carney. He’s illustrated that belief in a trilogy of beloved films: Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street. And now he’s stretched that trilogy into a “quadrilogy” (perhaps calling them a quartet is more in line with the music themes) with his new film opening this weekend. But this tune-filled dramedy has a “hook” that is almost universal. Here the songs are in service of mending a family. It can’t completely repair this particular family, but it may just bring this single mother and her teenage son a tad closer, so at least they’re not spending their evenings screaming at one another. Adding to the tension is their “hand-to-mouth” existence, being part of the hard-working lower middle class of Ireland. That’s the setting...

Movie Review: Flora and Son
Image
While teaching his pupil how to play guitar in Flora and Son, a music instructor explains that writing a song doesn’t come down to how many chords one knows as much as how those chords are used. It could very easily be a metaphor for the career of writer/director John Carney.

Since 2007’s Once, Carney has specialized in stories about music’s power to connect and heal. It’s a theme present throughout the majority of his filmography, even if the tone and subject vary. From the scrappy, no-budget Once to the joyful period piece Sing Street (2016), no other filmmaker has been as curious about music’s power to transform. Carney returns to those themes in Flora and Son, a comedy-drama about a single mother, her son and a guitar. And he proves again that few directors understand how to use music and songwriting to tackle ideas of...

We can see Carney bringing many complicated relationships in this one-and-a-half-hour story, and for the most part, he is very successful in showing a beautiful feel-good story with great music. The characters in this film are vibrant and feel very real which helps in selling some absurd moments.

The performances in Flora and Son are absolutely brilliant and obviously the standout performance was given by Eve Hewson as Flora.

‘Flora and Son’ Review: Starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Image

Writer/director John Carney hits all the right notes with Flora and Son, a film that earns its spot nesting snuggly within Carney’s music-infused projects. Carney’s Once (2007) struck a chord with audiences and critics, capturing an Oscar for Best Song and a Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film. Begin Again (2014) strummed heartstrings while Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley made beautiful music together on screen, and Carney’s (2016) Sing Street earned an impressive 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes along with a spot on the National Board of Review’s top 10 independent film list.

Carney understands the power of music and how it can help heal deep, emotional wounds and bridge the gap between opposing forces. In Flora and Son, the titular characters are the opposing forces, and music transforms their relationship from dysfunctional to harmonious.

Image
Stop Making Sense, the remastered concert film that sowed delight at TIFF, opens on 300 Imax screens in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and Ireland. Locations Stateside number 260 ahead of a nationwide release next week.

John Carney’s musical-comedy “Flora and Son,” which was acquired by Apple Original Films after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, is one of the streamer’s multiple awards contenders this year, most notably for best original song.

With 18 original songs in the feature, deciding which one to put up for Academy consideration was a daunting task. Variety has learned that Apple will submit the “High Life” track composed by Carney, Gary Clark and star Eve Hewson. The song is performed in the movie by Hewson, Orén Kinlan, Jack Reynor and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

John Carney in Once (2006)
Flora and Son Review: John Carney’s Aspirational Musical Tale Is Spread Thin
John Carney in Once (2006)
With his 2009 musical romance Once, writer-director John Carney laid the groundwork for all of his subsequent films. He has, ever since, been telling stories about adrift musical folk eventually brought together by the intimacy of collaboration. His latest, Flora and Son, essentially doubles down on that commitment by focusing on two relationships built around music, but right away the film feels spread thin as a result.

The film’s central figure is Flora (Eve Hewson), a young single mother in Dublin who’s often out partying rather than caring for Max (Orén Kinlan), the now-teenage son she had before she turned 18. Their relationship is volatile, and their mutual disdain could hardly be more apparent. Flora makes no secret of the relief she feels when she can dump Max on the doorstep of her neck-tattooed ex-husband, Ian (Jack Reynor). Max, in turn, has taken to acting out, and he’s on...

Every Movie Coming to Apple TV+ in September 2023
Image
September is almost here. Summer is winding down, and Fall is in full swing. For the broadcast networks and streamers, that means it's time to roll out their new fall content. This Fall will look slightly different for the ever-aging linear television due to the ongoing dual WGA and SAG strikes. However, since streamers do not follow the outdated broadcast TV season, they're able to program year-round with little interruptions. Apple TV+ is set to launch into the Fall with several new and returning hit shows and movies.

Apple TV+ is one of the newer streamers on the scene, launching in November 2019 at roughly the same time as Disney+. However, it wasted no time establishing itself with hit original series like The Morning Show, Severance, Silo, and Ted Lasso, among others.

On the movie side of things, Coda became the first film distributed by a streaming service to win Best Picture at the Oscars.

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch Flora and Son – the latest music-themed film from director John Carney – at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the result was a 9/10 review you can read at This Link. You can check it out in the embed above.

Sing Street Fans Will Want To Watch This Flora And Son Trailer Immediately
Image
John Carney has not directed a movie since 2016, and that movie was "Sing Street." Though the movie may not have been a big hit at the time, those who have seen it largely regard it — rightfully so — as a true gem. It would not be a stretch to call it one of the most underappreciated movies of the last decade. All of this to say, Carney is finally back with a new movie in the form of "Flora and Son," which is set for release next month. Now, Apple has released a trailer ahead of the film's rollout, and it looks very much in line with what we've come to expect from Carney as a filmmaker.

The cast is led by Eve Hewson ("The Knick"), with Jack Reynor ("Sing Street"), Orén Kinlan ("Taken Down"), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt ("Super Pumped") also starring. It's a mother and son story with a musical...

Must Watch Trailer for John Carney's 'Flora and Son' with Eve Hewson
Image
"How come 'the way things are' are never enough for you?" Apple has revealed the first official trailer for Flora and Son, the latest musical experience from acclaimed Irish filmmaker John Carney. This first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, as a last minute addition, and ended up being one of my favorite films of the festival. I really fell for it. "Never underestimate a Dublin woman with a guitar." The charming musical comedy follows Flora, played by Eve Hewson (Bono's daughter) a single mom who is at war with her son, Max. Trying to find a hobby for Max, she rescues a guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person's trash can be a family's salvation. She also strikes up a virtual relationship with a musician, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who teaches her how to play the guitar. The small cast includes Orén Kinlan,...

Eve Hewson Drops First Track From ‘Flora and Son,’ Musical Film With Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Exclusive)
Image
The first single has been released from the soundtrack of Apple’s musical drama “Flora and Son,” starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Eve Hewson. Titled “High Life,” the single is an emotional yet optimistic track about a motherhood, performed by Hewson and her co-star Orén Kinlan.

While she might be the daughter of Irish rockstar Bono, Hewson said she did not enlist her U2 frontman father for help on the project. “I’ve learned so much from him, in terms of life presence, stage presence. But I didn’t ask him for help,” Hewson previously said at Variety’s Sundance Studio earlier this year. “He offered, and I was like, ‘No, thank you.’ He’s, like, a really good singer so I was like, ‘No, no, no.’”

“Flora and Son” was helmed by John Carney, the Irish director known for “Sing Street” and his Amazon Prime series “Modern Love.”
