The Epic Production Behind Francis Ford Coppola's $14M Sci-Fi Flop Revealed In New Documentary Trailer
Image
The new trailer for a raw documentary about Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed passion project, Megalopolis, reveals the epic production behind the 2024 flop. The five-time Oscar winner spent $120 million to fund the movie that took him over 40 years to make. With an idea first conceived in 1977, the Godfather filmmaker began writing the script in 1983, but it wasn't until last year that the movie finally made it into the theaters.

Megalopolis' star-studded cast features Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, and many others. However, despite the star power and Coppola's reputation, the movie faced a series of challenges in marketing and only grossed around $14 million against a massive budget.

Now, Utopia has released a new trailer for Mike Figgis' documentary, titled Megadoc, teasing a never-before-seen look at Coppola's journey in shaping the world of Megalopolis. From unfiltered interviews to a close-up view of Coppola's process, the documentary...

’40 Acres’ Review

Stars: Danielle Deadwyler, Kataem O’Connor, Michael Greyeyes, Milcania Diaz-Rojas, Leenah Robinson, Jaeda LeBlanc, Haile Amare, Elizabeth Saunders, Tyrone Benskin | Written by R.T. Thorne, Glenn Taylor | Directed by R.T. Thorne

Danielle Deadwyler (Till) stars in post-apocalyptic survival thriller 40 Acres, the debut feature from director R.T. Thorne, who also co-wrote the script. As such, the film delivers in terms of gore-infused action, but the story could do with being a little less muddy.

Opening captions quickly bring us up to speed on the current state of the world – fifteen years ago, a fungal pandemic killed 90% of the world’s animal biosphere, which led to the collapse of the global food chain, which in turn leads to both widespread famine and civil war. As a result, farming families and communities are highly sought after, but they constantly find themselves under threat from marauding outsiders.

One such farming family are the Freemans,...

‘Souleymane’s Story’ Review: Boris Lojkine’s Blisteringly Empathetic Immigration Drama
Image
The opening shot of Souleymane’s Story finds Souleymane (Abou Sangare) standing in line in Paris for an asylum hearing, waiting to learn whether he officially counts as someone. He’s a recent arrival from Guinea, and across the film, director Boris Lojkine traces the man’s progress, at once literal and existential, through moments of hope and desperation.

After the title card, the film jumps back in time 48 hours to trace Souleymane’s daily grind as a delivery driver, during which time he’s at the mercy of ever-dinging notifications that remind him to enter codes and sometimes verify his face before schlepping food to customers. Turns out, Souleymane is renting an UberEats account from a friend, Emmanuel (Emmanuel Yovanie), who must occasionally verify Souleymane’s identity and collect his earnings. In the hands of the filmmakers, these petty humiliations accumulate into a quietly blistering indictment of a culture...

‘Megadoc’ First Look: Mike Figgis Captures an ‘Unfiltered’ Understanding of Francis Ford Coppola’s Making of ‘Megalopolis’
Image
Francis Ford Coppola’s controversial “Megalopolis” production is now being given the documentary treatment. Mike Figgis directs “Megadoc” about the making of Coppola’s self-funded $120 million epic. While the buzzy cast included a slew of “canceled” actors as well as beloved stars, the feature was plagued with allegations of wild on-set antics and unwanted advances against extras (Coppola has denied the claims.) Figgis, meanwhile, was on set to capture it all.

“Megadoc” is billed as an “unfiltered” look into Coppola’s “Megalopolis” and the auteur’s creative process as a whole. The official synopsis for “Megadoc” reads: “A raw, fly-on-the-wall documentary about Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-long journey in creating his self-financed passion project, ‘Megalopolis.’ The bold and unrelenting epic returns in Mike Figgis’ portrait of Coppola’s creative process – weaving together archival material, unfiltered cast interviews, and a close-up view of how the legendary filmmaker drew from Roman history,...

French President Emmanuel Macron and Wife Brigitte File Defamation Lawsuit Against Candace Owens
Image
French President Emmanuel Macron and Brigitte Macron have filed a defamation lawsuit against Candace Owens, the conservative influencer and podcaster who claims the first lady was born male.

Filed in Delaware on Wednesday, the lawsuit accuses Owens of publishing “outlandish, defamatory and far-fetched fictions,” causing “substantial reputational damage” and “substantial economic damages” to the Macrons in the process, according to the Financial Times.

The 218 page-court ruling states that along with claiming Macron was born under the name Jean-Michel Trogneux, Owens went on to say that the Macrons are also blood relatives and that Emmanuel Macron is “a product of a CIA human experiment or a similar government mind control programme,” per the Financial Times.

The lawsuit says Owens is responsible for spreading the conspiracy theory in the U.S. and around the world in order “to promote her independent platform, gain notoriety and make money.” On top of selling some merchandise,...

‘40 Acres’ Review: Danielle Deadwyler Is a Steely Matriarch Protecting Her Own in Riveting Post-Apocalyptic Thriller
Image
In a future where land is the most valuable commodity, the Freemans adhere to a strict isolationist policy. The tight-knit family at the center of R.T. Thorne’s gripping debut 40 Acres does not explore areas outside of their farm, a sprawling tract of land in rural Canada demarcated by barbed wires, nor do they fraternize with other survivors in their dangerous post-apocalyptic world. Led by their resolute matriarch Hailey (Danielle Deadwyler, in typically fine form) and her partner Galen (Michael Greyeyes, also excellent), the Freeman children spend their days tending crops, undergoing rigorous combat training and learning about the traditions of their Black and Indigenous ancestors.

But their quiet existence becomes threatened after Emanuel (Kataem O’Connor), the eldest Freeman kid, makes contact with a young woman who desperately needs his family’s help.

Borrowing from a range of familiar sources, most notably the work of Octavia Butler, Thorne crafts a...

40 Acres Review — A Raw, Gripping, and Relentlessly Human Dystopian Drama
Image
In a desolate landscape where the world as we know it has already collapsed, a family fights for survival and the preservation of their legacy. 40 Acres, the feature directorial debut of R.T. Thorne, co-written with Glenn Taylor, is an intense dystopian drama set in a future ravaged by war and famine.

Hailey Freeman (Danielle Deadwyler) is a former soldier who leads her family with an iron fist on an isolated farm in the middle of nowhere, constantly threatened by a militia that covets her precious land — rich in historical and personal symbolism. Alongside Deadwyler are Kataem O’Connor (Murdoch Mysteries), Michael Greyeyes (Wild Indian), Milcania Diaz-Rojas (The Bold Type), Leenah Robinson (1923), and Haile Amare.

“This guy is a joke of a Forge Master”: We All Can Agree This Is Arguably the Weakest Character in Castlevania: Nocturne
Image
There is no doubt that Castlevania: Nocturne has provided some of the most iconic characters who are known for their physical or emotional strengths. However, Abbot Emmanuel is an anomaly in such a scenario, with not much to showcase strength-wise and also lacking in a strong will.

Even though he is one of the most pivotal characters in the story, he is also deeply flawed as a human. On top of that, despite being a Devil Forgemaster, he’s arguably the weakest of the bunch as his powers come from a machine, and it is not something that he actually possesses.

Still, he was definitely an intriguing character with immense potential to be a compelling villain, but his own lack of conviction reduced him to a tragic and hypocritical man.

The weak-willed Forgemaster of Castlevania: Nocturne

Abbot Emmanuel represents the flaws of humanity when faced with problems they cannot handle.

MCU Casting Rumors Heat Up After 2 Surprise Stars Appear at Thunderbolts Premiere
Image
Two major movie stars made a surprise appearance at the premiere of Thunderbolts*, leading many to speculate that they both could be debuting in the MCU at any time. The world premiere of Thunderbolts* recently took place, and attendants were treated to seeing multiple stars from the film on the red carpet, such as Florence Pugh, David Harbour, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. However, some surprise guests who were not cast in the film (or the MCU) also made appearances.

Hollywood stars Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) and Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim) surprisingly attended Thunderbolts* world premiere in London, England on Tuesday, April 22, despite not being in the film or the MCU. This led to many fans speculating on whether Emmanuel and Turner-Smith will be cast in the MCU at some point in the near future, as they were the only non-mcu cast members at the premiere. The two actresses joined other...

Have Jodie Turner-Smith & Nathalie Emmanuel Joined The MCU? Speculation Mounts After Thunderbolts* Premiere
Image
Marvel Studios held the world premiere of Thunderbolts* in London last night, and the stars of the latest MCU movie were in attendance - along with a few familiar faces who aren't in the movie.

Pedro Pascal (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) walked the red carpet, along with Jodie Turner-Smith and Nathalie Emmanuel.

This wouldn't be the first time someone attended the premiere of a movie they didn't appear in, of course, but we have seen actors show up to Marvel Studios screenings in the past who would later be confirmed as cast members in upcoming projects. The fact that Turner-Smith and Emmanuel were the only non-mcu actors on the Thunderbolts* red carpet has led to speculation that they may have joined (or are in talks to join) the franchise in undisclosed roles.

It might be a stretch, but...

‘The Killer’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Nathalie Emmanuel, Omar Sy, Sam Worthington, Diana Silvers, Saïd Taghmaoui, Eric Cantona, Tchéky Karyo | Written by Brian Helgeland, Josh Campbell Matt Stuecken | Directed by John Woo

By all accounts, revisiting a classic is a gamble, especially when that classic is 1989’s The Killer, the film that not only defined John Woo’s career but helped reshape the language of action cinema. When I heard that Woo himself was helming a remake, more than three decades later, my curiosity was mixed with apprehension. Would this be a faded echo of a once-thunderous roar, or could the master still orchestrate balletic violence with operatic soul?

To my surprise and immense relief, Woo’s 2025 reimagining of The Killer is not just a respectful tribute to his original; it is a bold, resonant remix, made with the fire of an auteur who hasn’t lost his edge.

This time, the assassin with a...

Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 5 Review: The Broken Hearts Club
Image
The following contains major spoilers from Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 5, now streaming on BritBox.

Death in Paradise Series 14, Episode 5 is somewhat a reminder of why this show has been a British television staple. BBC and BritBox viewers have a general idea of how the mystery is going to go -- the specifics change, but there's always a "locked room" premise and always an ending where the Detective Inspector gathers the suspects. What keeps the show going is the character moments that keep the format interesting.

Episode 5 is a football-centered story as star goalkeeper Ines Mercedes is found dead in the locker room. Mervin Wilson and the team have no idea how they didn't see or hear anything, since they were sitting in the stands at the big game. But what unfolds is a plot that runs parallel to developments in Detective Sergeant Naomi Thomas' personal life. Plus, there's a...

Jay Ellis on Mentoring Filmmakers: ‘You Can’t Just Take from the Machine, You Got to Give Back’
Image
This article is presented in partnership with Rabbit Hole.

Jay Ellis is a busy man. The “Insecure” and “Top Gun: Maverick” star is a regular at the Sundance Film Festival, but this year he only had time to pop in for a whirlwind 48 hours thanks to a schedule that includes two new shows coming out this year (Netflix’s “Running Point” and Peacock’s “All Her Fault”) and a theater gig in New York this summer. But Ellis still finds time within that packed slate to mentor the next generation of filmmakers.

Without a film playing at the festival, he was on hand to attend the IndieWire Chili Party and talk about his involvement in Rabbit Hole’s Creative Spirit Challenge. The premium spirits brand, which has long been a supporter of independent film, has launched a pitch contest in which first-time filmmakers can win the camera equipment needed to make their first short film.

How Castlevania: Nocturne Salvaged an Awful Season 1 With an Epic Season 2
Image
This article discusses events in Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2 and will contain spoilers.

Castlevania: Nocturne is the sequel to Netflix’s shining glory of vampiric animated series, Castlevania. It premiered in late September 2023, written by Clive Bradley and directed by Sam and Adam Deats. Overall, it had a positive reception, rating 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was eventually greenlit for another full season, which was released in mid-January of this year.

Despite Nocturne being largely well-received by audiences, the first season had its flaws, which rendered it a lackluster sequel in the wake of the high expectations of returning Castlevania fans. However, while the first season dragged on with its questionable pacing, the second season eventually picked up the story and characters and carried them all the way to an amazing finale that viewers will never forget.

‘The View’ Host Sunny Hostin’s Husband, Emmanuel Hostin, Fights Insurance Fraud Lawsuit Alone After His Co-Defendants Settle Cases
Image
Emmanuel Hostin, the husband of The View co-host Sunny Hostin, is currently fighting his own battle in his insurance fraud lawsuit while the other co-defendants volunteered to settle their cases.

Emmanuel, who was named one of the defendants in the high-profile racketeering case in New York, stands accused of engaging in fraudulent medical practices to secure kickbacks from an insurance company.

The lawsuit, filed in December 2024, asserts that he was involved in a scheme where he performed surgeries, particularly arthroscopic procedures, and then billed an insurance company covering Uber, Lyft and taxi drivers.

The company’s owner, American Transit, claims these actions were part of a bigger scheme involving fraudulent billing practices that led to significant financial losses for the company.

The orthopedic surgeon is among 200 defendants accused of fraud in the case, and American Transit is demanding $450 million in damages.

Image
The View co-host Sunny Hostin is standing up for her husband, Dr. Emmanuel Hostin after he was named as a defendant in an insurance fraud lawsuit.

Dr. Hostin, who owns an orthopedic and sports medicine clinic in New York, was one of 180 defendants named in American Transit’s suit – an insurance company primarily representing ride-share drivers.

The surgeon and his practice have been accused of receiving “kickbacks by performing surgery and… billing a company that insured taxi companies and Uber and Lyft drivers.”

In a statement, The View co-host jumped to her husband’s defense, claiming that the company only took legal action as a “desperate attempt to avoid paying for medical and surgical procedures for people it insured who were in pain.”

“This company has a history of filing frivolous claims, has been investigated by New York State and has been sued by Uber Technologies,” Sunny said in her statement.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis may have come and gone at the box office, but the big-budget epic is still a fresh topic of conversation.

During an episode of her Good For You podcast, a clip of which was shared on TikTok, the veteran stand-up comedian claimed she had a “horror audition” for Coppola’s latest film.

She went on to say that she got a call that Coppola wanted her to audition for the film — which she actually doesn’t name in the clip, though it’s clear she’s talking about his long-gestating epic that grossed $13 million at the global box office on a budget estimated to be roughly $120 million. Cummings says she threw herself into the audition, preparing “for days” and spending north of three hours in hair and makeup.

Nathalie Emmanuel ‘Had to Have a Strategy’ Before Entering the Criterion Closet
Image
When it comes to the Criterion Closet, preparation is key.

Thank goodness “Megalopolis” star Nathalie Emmanuel knew this going in and came ready and raring to make her selections.

“I had to have a strategy when I came in here, because I know just by the vast collection, I would be immediately overwhelmed and then be indecisive,” said Emmanuel. “So I’ve decided to have some ideas of what I’m looking for.”

For her first pick, Emmanuel chose one of Francis Ford Coppola’s many inspirations for “Megalopolis,” the Powell & Pressburger musical piece “The Red Shoes.” The film follows a young ballet dancer who comes under the tutelage of a tyrannical director, sending her on a psychological whirlwind that makes her forget where she begins and the dance ends.

“I have such fond memories of this film. I have a dance background, ballet background, and the metaphor in the...

‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ Review: Town Terrors Get Tamed in a Fresh Take on the Kid-Lit Classic
Image
Initially a magazine short story, then expanded to novel form in 1972, Barbara Robinson’s “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” has remained a holiday staple ever since. Its enjoyable central conceit of Roald Dahl-style comedic nastiness — the first sentence pegs principal figures as “absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world” — no doubt explains an enduring popularity among young readers, while there’s just enough inspirational uplift by the end to earn parental approval.

That equation gets reversed to a degree in this first big-screen version from Dallas Jenkins, whose Biblical-times series “The Chosen” set a high mark among faith-based entertainments for the small screen in recent years. His “Pageant” goes a little too sentimental and instructive too soon for those viewers whose attention spans are better suited to the antic earlier going. Nonetheless, this is a well-cast, well-crafted diversion for the whole family that’s already done...

‘The Best Christmas Pageant Ever’ Review: Judy Greer in an Uneven Holiday Flick with an Ecclesiastical Spin
Image
In Dallas Jenkins’ The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, a group of kids wreak daily havoc on Emmanuel, a small town somewhere in America. The Herdmans, according to the narrator (Lauren Graham) of this uneven tale, are “the worst kids in the history of the world” — a title earned by Ralph (Mason D. Nelligan), Leroy (Ewan Wood), Claude (Matthew Lamb), Ollie (Essek Moore), Gladys (Kynlee Heiman) and Imogen (Beatrice Schneider) through a host of shenanigans ranging from personally offensive to downright harmful.

A nifty montage at the beginning of the holiday feature shows the Herdmans bullying kids and adults with impunity; taking the Lord’s name in vain; smoking cigars; stealing from local businesses and even setting fire to a dilapidated shed. Because of their repugnant behavior, residents of the community hardly believed the Herdmans were “real,” says the narrator. “No one knew why they were that way.” And it appears that few people — including,...

90 Day Fianc: Before the 90 Days star Chidi Ikpeamaeze has revealed the shocking timeline of his relationship with Rayne Fernandez, exposing her lies. New Mexico-based Rayne introduced herself as a chicken-loving New Mexico resident who had been together with Chidi for five years. Rayne claimed she was the one whod approached Chidi on social media without knowing he was blind. Five years later, Rayne decided to go meet Chidi in Nigeria. Chidi had not told her about the celibacy vow he had taken, which meant Rayne had to live in a separate room in his sister Victorias house.

Rayne disliked Victoria and the fact that Chidi was refusing to sleep with her. In the latest episode, she walked out of Victoria and her husband Bernards house into a hotel and wanted to know if Chidi was willing to lose her forever.

90 Day Fiance’s Chidi responds to Rayne calling him a ‘scammer’ and hints she used him to get on the show
Mariah Carey
Chidi and Rayne have been at the center of the drama throughout 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days Season 7, with fans questioning how long they’ll last and whether they would be invited to the Tell All.

Things took a dramatic turn last week when Rayne claimed they were uninvited from the season-ending event and that she was cut up about it because she planned to perform a Mariah Carey song for Chidi.

Naturally, that made 90 Day Fiance fans question whether their big blow-up on Sunday’s episode, which culminated in Rayne storming out of Chidi’s sister’s home with her belongings, wasn’t really the end of their relationship.

Viewers who have watched the 90 Day Fiance universe for a decade know that reality TV rules dictate that some couples can bounce back from the most terrible arguments.

Fortunately, it seems that wasn’t the case here because...

Francis Ford Coppola's controversial sci-fi film, Megalopolis, looks set for mega disappointment during its opening weekend at the box office. The star-laden Lionsgate title gets some gloomy projections for its first foray into cinemas.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Megalopolis earned a disappointing $770,000 in Tuesday and Thursday previews before its Sept. 27 premiere. The epic sci-fi drama, directed, written and produced by Coppola, is set to make between $5 million and $7 million at the domestic box office during its first weekend. “That is some top tier bad acting”: We Are Scared For Francis Ford Coppola After Watching This ‘Megalopolis’ Clip
Image
Fans went into a frenzy when veteran director Francis Ford Coppola revealed that he was about to release a film. Megalopolis was the result and the film debuted to mostly great reviews from critics.

However, the film is not made for everyone. Fans have taken to point out several things wrong with the film including the pacing. However, a clip shared on X went wrong when fans noticed how particularly bad the acting was in the film!

The Acting Is Allegedly Terrible in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis

It’s not all bad. The film is a sci-fi/drama that deals with a genius artist wanting to create a utopia and a mayor who wants to maintain the old ways. Although the film has an intriguing storyline, it’s not an ideal film for everyone.

Megalopolis Review — Admirable Ambition Meets Chaotic Execution in Francis Ford Coppola’s Epic
Image
Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather) and his dream project. If it feels like Megalopolis has been talked about countless times over the last 50 years, it’s because the idea was indeed conceived in 1977 and began development a few years later. However, from “debts” to Hollywood after consecutive box office failures to delays caused by terrorist attacks — not to mention a global pandemic — Coppola has been forced to put this unique story on hold decade after decade… until now.

The original idea has remained essentially intact, with the filmmaker’s primary intent being to draw parallels between the fall of the Roman Empire and the future of modern civilization, particularly the American one. On one side, the brilliant architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver) seeks to rebuild New York as a New Rome, utopian and idealistic. Opposing him, conservative mayor Franklyn Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) remains committed to the status quo, perpetuating greed,...

‘Megalopolis’ Review: Coppola’s Passion Project is a Visual Feast
Image
Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel in ‘Megalopolis’ (Photo Courtesy of Lionsgate)

In moviemaking, ambition and indulgence often go hand-in-hand. And that can be a double-edged sword. Case in point: legendary writer/director Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis.

Set in the fictional city of New Rome, Megalopolis is the story of two political rivals. One is the current mayor, Frank Cicero, who wants to preserve the way of life of the people of his city. The other is a visionary architect named Cesar Catalina (Adam Driver from Marriage Story) who has a more utopian vision for the future of the city. In between them is Cicero’s daughter and Cesar’s lover, Julia (Nathalie Emmanuel from Game of Thrones), who is forced to mediate the power struggle.

Megalopolis was, and is, a labor of love for Francis Ford Coppola. He began developing it back in the early eighties, but...

Dustin Hoffman Helps Aubrey Plaza Fix Her Hat at 'Megalopolis' NYC Red Carpet Premiere
Image
Aubrey Plaza had some fun with her fashion on the red carpet at the Megalopolis premiere!

The 40-year-old actress received some help with her hat from co-star Dustin Hoffman, 87, while walking the carpet at the event on Monday night (September 23) at AMC Lincoln Square Theater in New York City.

Also in attendance at the event were director Francis Ford Coppola and co-stars Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, D.B. Sweeney, Isabelle Kusman, and Neri Oxman.

Megalopolis is a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America. The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero (Esposito), who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Megalopolis Review: We Saw Coppola’s Controversial Passion Project
Image
Plot: In a futuristic metropolis named New Rome, the city’s mayor, Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), battles an idealistic architect named Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), who wants to create a sustainable utopia.

Review: One of the most unique things about Francis Ford Coppola as a director is the fact that he’s probably the only one I can think of who’s made at least four outright masterpieces and probably an equal number of disasters. For every Godfather, there’s a One from the Heart, but Coppola, to his credit, has never allowed critics or audiences to dictate the movies he makes, and for better or worse, this is exactly the film he wanted. Whether or not anyone else will understand or appreciate what he’s doing is another question. I must admit that even though I can find merit in almost all of his work, Megalopolis escaped me.

An ambitious...

San Sebastian Head José Luis Rebordinos Talks ‘Emmanuelle’, Johnny Depp & Avoiding Competition With Other Fall Festivals
Image
José Luis Rebordinos, director of the San Sebastian Film Festival, has just over a week until opening night when he sits down for an interview with Deadline, and he is still plagued by one niggling organizational issue.

“It’s always so difficult to close the jury,” Rebordinos explains as he rushes out of the room to take a call about his potential jury head.

When he returns, he explains: “A few weeks ago I was speaking with Thierry Fremaux. He said even for him it’s always a problem because jury members have to be at your festival for 10 days, you don’t pay, and it’s complicated because people are often working and when they aren’t, they want to spend time with their families and friends.”

A few days later, the competition jury is finally confirmed, with Spanish filmmaker Jaione Camborda leading alongside Leila Guerriero, Fran Kranz, Christos Nikou,...
