Two on-the-rise directors, Maria Perez Sanz (“Karen”) and Maddi Barber (“Land Underwater”), have signed on to direct episodes in “Present,” a singular exploration by Spain’s Garde of a new generation of women artists, both cineastes and writers, who broke out last decade.

Part of a broader literary-film project, “This Is Not a Poem” (“Esto no es una poesía”), “Present” (“Presentes”) is being introduced to potential co-producers and distributors by Garde founder Cristina Hergueta at Locarno’s Match Me, a networking forum which kicked off Aug. 6.

Perez Sanz will bring to the screen a text written by Cristina Morales, winner of Spain’s 2019 National Narrative Prize for “Lectura Facil.” Barber will create a film from a poem by Maria Sanchez, whose first book of poetry, “Cuaderno de campo,” was published in 2017, and has quickly run through multiple editions.

Netflix Spain has dropped a trailer for the highly anticipated second season of its high-octane Spanish thriller series “Sky Rojo,” coming to the platform worldwide on July 23.

Shifting from the Spanish noir aesthetics of “Money Heist,” “Sky Rojo” opts for a brightly colored, neon palette to mix several genres into something its creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” In another shift, the duo has also cut each of the season’s eight episodes to a punchy 25-minute runtime.

In “Sky Rojo” season one, three exotic dancers are forced into prostitution after becoming victims of a human trafficking scheme. After a confrontation with club-owner-turned-pimp Romeo turned violent, the three broke from their chains of bondage and fled across the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife. Spanish actor Verónica Sanchez (“Gordos”), Argentine singer-actor Lali Espósito (“That’s Not Cheating”) and Cuban up-and-comer Yany Prado (“Tres Milagros”) play the three lead roles in the series.

Netflix Spain’s most ambitious series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch in nine days time, premiering worldwide on the platform March 19.

Shifting from the dark, almost noir aesthetics of “Money Heist,” the new series utilizes a brightly colored, grindhouse aesthetic for the new series in a mix of genres its creators have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” The series is also a departure in format for the two, who trade in the hour-long episodes of “Money Heist” for eight punchy, 25-minute episodes, to be copied in the series’ already-confirmed second season.

“Sky Rojo” is headlined by the international trio of Spain’s Verónica Sanchez (“Gordos”), Argentine superstar actor-singer-songwriter Lali Espósito (“That’s Not Cheating”) and Cuban standout Yany Prado (“Tres Milagros”). The three play exotic dancers-turned-prostitutes trapped in the world of sex trafficking, each with a dagger hanging over their head.

The Skin I Live In (La piel que habito) and the other nominations for the 2012 Goya Awards (Premios Goyas) have been announced. The 26th Annual Goya Awards (Premios Goyas), presented by the Academia de las Artes y Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences), is “Spain’s main national film awards, considered by many in Spain, and internationally, to be the Spanish equivalent of the American Academy Awards.” The awards will be handed out on February 19, 2012 in Madrid, Spain.

The 2011 Sitges Film Festival, held 6-16 October on the Catalan coast of Spain, is finalizing its lineup, which now includes Francis Ford Coppola's Twixt, Kevin Smith's Red State, and the return of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, who will be presenting their new piece Livide. Whoa... The Apaches Entertainment and Filmax co-production Verbo has a teaser trailer and the film is looking very interesting, regardless of director Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's fascination with light sticks. The preview plays it up big with an epic-sounding score and cool visual effects. The story follows Sara, a teenager who doesn't understand the world in which she lives. Only Liriko, a mysterious character who projects enigmatic messages across the city, seems to understand her. Her search for meaning in this often depressing world will lead her to a secret place, where she will embark on a great adventure towards life, or death. Madrid -- Spanish distributor Aurum has picked up two of Spain's most promising genre movies this year, Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's futuristic "Verbo" and Eugenio Mira's romantic thriller "Agnosia."

Both titles are produced by Telecinco Cinema and sold internationally by Filmax Intl.

Alliance Atlantis Company, Aurum's parent company, will distribute period piece "Agnosia," starring Eduardo Noriega and Barbara Goenaga, in Canada and the U.K. via Momentum.

"Verbo," is the feature film debut of the European Film Academy Award winner and the first production from Madrid-based Apaches Entertainment, which has come onto the Spanish scene with a strong slate that includes Juan Antonio Bayona's upcoming "The Impossible."

Coming off boxoffice success with the "Twilight" saga, Aurum looks set to beef up on its genre titles.

Having really dug [rec] 2 I'm eagerly looking forward to the two planned sequels which were just reported on today. Directors Paco Plaza and Jaume Balaguero will split directing duties on each film. I hope that doesn't break the formula. The two co-wrote the third film, [Rec] Genesis, which is slated for Fall 2011 and has to do with the origins of the virus which only seems logical considering how #2 went. The fourth is slated for Fall 2012.

Now for something I've had my eye on for a while and another project being backed by Filmax.. • I’ve been saying it since Toronto (and not Cannes since I didn’t get to see it there) that Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is the film to beat this year when it comes to Euro-products. Yesterday’s 20th European Film Awards win as best film and best director is a testament to the quality of this Romanian picture that hopefully won’t be overlooked by the Academy Award voters back in the U.S. Prizing for best actress went to Helen Mirren (who has probably picked up her last trophy for her perf in The Queen), while best actor went to Sasson Gabai – the actor was showcased in Cannes fav, Eran Kolirin's The Band Visit.
