European Film Promotion highlights 28 European films for the 90th Academy AwardsPutting a spotlight on a record number of 28 European Oscar® entries, Efp (European Film Promotion) offers additional screenings of the films in L.A. for Academy members, journalists, U.S. distributors and international buyers. With the special support of the Efp member organizations, the event helps the productions to stand out among a record number of 92 submissions for the 90th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The final deadline for submitting each country’s film for consideration for the foreign-language Oscar was October 2. Last year 85 were finally deemed eligible by the Academy; this year the number is a record 92. Greece has selected Yannis Sakaridis' timely story of the opposing forces facing today's humanitarian crises, Amerika Square, as its candidate for consideration for the best foreign-language film Oscar.
The film, the second feature by Sakaridis, premiered last year in Busan and has won awards around the world since, including best feature at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival this year.
In the pic, tattoo artist Billy (Yannis Stankoglou) and his best mate, the unemployed Nakos (Makis Papadimitriou), often hang out in the eponymous Athens square of the title. Nakos blames immigrants and refugees for his country's problems, projecting his own sense...

Corinth Films has acquired North American rights in Cannes for Yannis Sakaridis’ Greece-uk-Germany drama Amerika Square, following a deal with Patra Spanou Film Marketing & Consulting.
Deals have already closed with Cada in Spain, and Fabular Films in Turkey, while HBO Europe holds TV rights for Eastern Europe. Feelgood Entertainment distributed Amerika Square in Greece in March.
The film, which premiered in Busan last year and won the Fipresci prize in Thessaloniki, centres on a Greek nationalist in Athens whose world is turned upside-down when his apartment building becomes a home for migrants.

Argyris Papadimitropoulos’s (Wasted Youth) drama Suntan was the big winner at the Iris Hellenic Film Academy Awards on Tuesday evening (March 21) winning six prizes out of the 11 for which it was nominated including best film and director.
The film, which played in the Rotterdam, Brussels, Edinburgh, SXSW, Odessa and Jeonju festivals, was also awarded best screenplay, best actor for Makis Padimitriou and best supporting actress for Elli Tringou.
The Faliro House, Marni and Oxymoron production is a bitter sweet drama about a middle-aged doctor on a Greek island whose life turns upside down when he gets embroiled with a group of hedonist tourists.
The film is widely tipped to be Greece’s submission in the best foreign language category at next year’s Oscars.

Capturing not only the pain of Europe’s immigration drama but the degradation of Greece amid the hustlers and the crazies, Amerika Square (Plateia Amerikis) will long be remembered for its chilling portrait of an angry, disenfranchised racist who turns to poisoning immigrants to make them “go back where they came from.” The anguishing, downbeat illegal-immigrant story may be getting a little too familiar to have much bite at the box office, but this drama directed with clarity and compassion by Yannis Sakaridis should be well appreciated by festival audiences. It won the Fipresci award in Thessaloniki.

Hungarian director Attila Till’s Kills On Wheels (Tiszta Szivvel) has been named best film at the 57th Thessaloniki International Film Festival (Nov 3-13) winning the “Theo Angelopoulos” Golden Alexander award.
The film beat out 16 first and second films screened in this year’s competition section.
Kills On Wheels’ three leading young actors, Zoltan Fenyvesi, SzaboIcs Thuroczy and Adam Fekete were jointly awarded the Best actor trophy.
The film, arriving from the Chicago film festival where it won the Roger Ebert award, deals with three wheelchair-using young adults who decide to offer their services to the mafia in an effort to overcome their daily routines. World sales are handled by the Hungarian Film Fund.

Albert Serra and Pawel Pawlikowski are among 23 European film-makers who will be presenting their films in person as part of European Film Promotion’s (Efp) Opening Doors programme at this year’s Busan International Film Festival (Oct 3-13).
Catalonian filmmaker Serra will travel to the South Korean festival for his Golden Leopard winner Story Of My Death, while Polish director Pawlikowski will introduce Ida, his first feature shot in his native Poland, which won a Fipresci prize on its world premiere in Toronto last week.
At last week’s Gdynia Film Festival, Ida was named the Golden Lion Grand Prix for Best Film. The award went to Pawlikowski and his producers Ewa Puszczynska and Piotr Dziecol of Lodz-based Opus Film. There were also prizes for the lead actress Agata Kulesza and the film’s cinematography and art direction.

Once again the European Film Promotion’s (Efp) Film Sales Support (Fss) initiative will come to Toronto to link sales companies from all over Europe to a great array of buyers from across the globe. Supported by the Media Programme of the European Union, Fss has now been aiding the European film industry fro the last 10 years.
"Toronto has and is an important informal market and an important festival for European films, the distributors see the films in a different mood, more quietly, the public screenings are working well. It is a key place to launch a film or to complete previous sales on films that were in Cannes, Venice, Locarno...” (Loïc Magneron, Wide)
“Tiff is a major pillar of the annual festival calendar. Aside from a proliferation of North American buyers, it also attracts top tier international distributors so a favorable reception at Tiff can significantly increase a film's commercial prospects”. (Andrew Orr, Independent)
Due to the limited amount of resources, only 52 out of the 60 films submitted to the Efp will receive financial support to be marketed during the Tiff, which runs from September 5 to 15. This year alone, 372 films total, over 150 from Europe, will screen at the festival many of which will see their world or international premiers there.

Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.
The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.
It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.

The 2013 Toronto Film Festival selection grew quite a bit today as the organizers announced the Midnight Madness, Documentary, Vanguard, City to City and Cinematheque selections for this year's festival. Among the title announced there aren't exactly a ton of names that pop off the paper immediately. The Midnight Madness selection will open with Lucky McKee's All Cheerleaders Die in which a young girl who practices the dark arts turns on her best friend after she joins the cheer squad. However, I assume most attention will be on Eli Roth's The Green Inferno, a film in which a group of humanitarians go to the Amazon to help a native tribe only to have the tribe kidnap them and later learn their cannibalistic heritage is very much intact. The Documentary selection includes plenty of familiar faces such as Marcel Ophuls, Claude Lanzmann and Errol Morris and Frank Pavich will be bringing Jodorowsky's Dune,...
