It is sad how ill-informed our media is! The coverage of the passing away of legendary ghazal singer, Pankaj Udhas, demonstrates this lack of information and research. The credit for Pankaj’s fame is attributed mainly to one film song, ‘Chitthi aayee hai…’ from ‘Naam’. The film was released in 1986 by which time Pankaj had become a hugely popular ghazal singer, second only to the veteran Jagjit Singh. But then, Jagjit Singh had a head start.
By 1986, Pankaj had quite a few silver, gold and platinum discs to his credit. These discs were awarded by the music companies on an album achieving a certain milestone in sales. Ghazals were initially a choice of certain discerning music lovers.
But Pankaj had a varied repertoire and his numbers such as ‘Ghungroo toot gaye’, ‘Sharab cheez hi aisi hai’, ‘Chandi jaisa rang’ and ‘Niklo na benaqab’ carried a definite appeal for the masses.

New Delhi, June 26 (Ians) For someone who has worked with the likes of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Jagjit Singh and has contributed to the soundtracks of popular movies including ‘Page 3’, ‘The Body’ and the recently released Nawazuddin Siddiqui-Bhumi Pednekar starrer ‘Afwaah’, the paradigm shift in Hindi film music is hard to ignore.
Music composer Shamir Tandon points out, “Now, films have fewer songs and there is no lip-synching. In fact, some films are songless. There are not many situations that warrant a music number. The duration of songs has been reduced too. It may appear for a few seconds and then fade out, unlike the past when multiple ‘antras’ would play.”
The music composer, who has worked with Sudhir Mishra in the past too, tells Ians that it is always a pleasure associating with the latter as he has a clear vision and does not stick to tried-and-true concepts,...

Interestingly, Dharmendra plays a key role in Ranveer’s upcoming film, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’ and he also acted in Bimal Roy’s last film, ‘Bandini’ (1963).
During the pre-wedding ceremony, Karan and his fiancee Drisha — he wearing a blue kurta and she in a bright yellow sari — cut a cake and fed a piece to each other, according to a video doing the rounds on social media.

Veteran Urdu poet Bashir Badr once shared a “secret”. He said: “I have one enemy — his name is Jagjit. Whatever is mine (poetry), people think it is his (when he sings it). That is why I never introduced him to my wife.”
It was an oblique tribute to Jagjit Singh, whose mellifluous voice imbued pure magic in whatever form of verse — classical to popular to religious to folk — he rendered.
In the course of his decades-long musical journey, Jagjit Singh, who was born on this day (February 8) in 1941, endeared himself to generations of music lovers in India and became Indian music’s best-known figure globally after Pandit Ravi Shankar. This was a far cry from his first public appearance — as an uncredited extra in a Rajendra Kumar film.
Amid all this, he gave a new lease of life to ghazal, which he transformed from a preserve of largely upper-class connoisseurs...

Pune, Oct 2 (Ians) Defending champions Sail Hockey Academy, Rourkela, Odisha were held to an exciting 3-3 draw by Sukhjeevan Sports Academy, Agra in the 6th Snbp All-India Hockey Tournament (Boys’ Under-16) at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, on Sunday.
A last-minute penalty stroke earned by the Agra team and subsequently converted by Deonath Nanwar (59th) denied Sail the chance to gain full points from their opening Pool-g fixture
Sail got off to a sound start with Akash Rajbhar (6th) making it 1-0, however, Sunil Lakhra (13th) was quick to bring the match on level for Sukhjeevan Sports Academy. At the end of two quarters, the match stood on level terms.

Lyricist Manoj Muntashir has unveiled a ghazal that he says was originally meant to be sung by the late ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh.
"Jagjitji wanted to record 'Mujhe kisi se pyar nahi', but he left us before these words could reach the recording studio. I can never forget the twinkle in his eyes when he heard these verses. His taste for good poetry is not hidden from anyone. I was a little nervous while reading out the ghazal to him. He maintained a stoic face initially, but soon he gave up and his eyes widened," Muntashir recalled, while speaking to Ians.
"Even before I could finish the narration, he extended his diary and asked me to pen it down. I wrote the whole ghazal, and then he said, 'write down your address also'. I asked, 'uncle you have my mobile number, why address?' He replied: 'Cheque kya mobile number pe bhejoonga?...

In the torrent of songs that flows freely in this hopelessly romantic love triangle produced by T Series (for those who came in late, T Series are predominantly into music) there is the much-missed Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh rising from the dead—not unlike the film’s heroine’s lover who’s presumed dead in a skiing accident—to match voices with Rekha Bhardwaj in an excruciatingly nostalgic duet.
If he meant that particular Ghazal Teri fariyaad to be a duet wouldn’t he have sung it with his wife Chitra Singh?
Who asked Jagjit Saab’s consent for this unscheduled duet? In much the same way that the film’s protagonist Taran (Neha Sharma) asks Shekhar (Aditya Seal) at the end of the movie who gave him permission to decide what her heart wants.

Ever since his death in 2011, the Ghazal maestro Jagjit Singh's wife Chitra Singh has been fighting a lone battle to get her husband the recognition he deserves. "I think he deserves the Bharat Ratna, no less...The country must give him his dues. Manmohan Singhji released two commemorative stamps on Feb 8 of Jagjitji. That was okay. Theek hai. But what about the recognition that Jagjit Saab deserves?" The Ghazal maestro's widow, herself a renowned Ghazal singer in the 1970s and 80s had been persuading Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi for many years to award a Bharat Ratna to her husband. Sighs Chitraji, "They gave Jagjitji the Padma Bhushan in 2003. 11 years have passed since. Every year we expected him to get the Bharat Ratna." In 2012, at a function in Delhi on Jagjit Singh's first death anniversary, Chitraji met Sonia Gandhi to invite her for a function on the first anniversary.

22 years after they collaborated on the historic album Sajda, Jagjit Singh is all set to reunite posthumously with the Nightingale Lata Mangeshkar, albeit in a most unexpected way. An undiscovered devotional song about Lord Krishna has been gifted by the late and much-missed maestro's wife Chitra Singh to Lataji. That undiscovered gem by Jagjit would now be part of Lataji's new album of Krishna Bhajans entitled Shri Krishna Namah. The landmark album would be released on Lataji's own label Lm Music. Says Lataji, "Actually, Jagjit Saab is better known for his ghazals. But he also sang devotional numbers beautifully. This chant sung by him devoted to Lord Krishna was given to us through composer Mayuresh Pai by his wife Chitraji. We've incorporated it into my album of Krishna Bhajans." This Lady Gaga in Aiyyaa sings, ‘Do do do me’ to a leery lad who has seen better ‘daze’. Demurring to Gaga’s do-able proposition lanky lad replies, ‘I do with my hand.’
Ahem. At this point the director seems to have completely lost the post. Aiyyaa is a film that thrives on the mood of unmitigated zaniness. For those who like their comedy with a heavy layering of wistful fantasy it’s quite an experience.Wacky and funny on the top, the world of the protagonist Meenaxi(Rani Mukherjee) is dark and sombre beneath.

The Jagjit Singh concert on Feb 8 on the occasion of the Ghazal maestro's 71st birthday has earned the wholehearted approval of the Ghazal maestro's wife. In fact, Sabbas Joseph of Wizcraft says the event organizers made sure to have her approval before organizing the concert in memoriam. Says Sabbas, "We thought it was only right that we should get Chitraji's blessings. This concert where some of our finest singers will pay a vocal tribute to Jagjit Saab is being done for no commercial purposes. Only out of everyone's love for Jagjit Saab's artistry. Just a day before he passed away, Jagjit Saab was supposed to attend the Gima (Global Indian Music Academy Awards). He had called to tell us he was feeling unwell. And then he was no more. This concert in his memory couldn't be done without Chitraji's approval. When we visited Chitraji she gave us her wholehearted support and approval.

Big stars, serious issue, great music- that is Khap. In the words of Om Puri “The story is told with compassion, humanity and such a hard hitting subject is told in a very entertaining manner”
If you look at Box Office numbers, nowadays movies made on social causes are quite successful . Directors, who dabble in this genre are finding new issues everyday. The conscious shift from the typical Bollywood hero-heroine-villain drama to these sensitive subjects undoubtedly enriches the cinema goers experience. Khap is another issue centric film based on the Khap panchayat and honor killings.
Khap is a tale of a world where marriages take place when they satisfy age old customs. If a couple does not abide by the traditions, a death sentence is passed and executed brutally by their own kin.
