Colin Farrell's Box Office Disaster He "Didn't Like" Is a Streaming Hit Almost 20 Years Later
Image
Although a box office and critical disaster upon its 2006 arrival, Michael Mann's film adaptation of the hit series Miami Vice has gained a strong cult following ever since, with many calling it one of the most underrated movies of the 2000s. Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising then that, almost two decades on, the film is finally finding a semblance of success, officially joining the top 10 most-streamed movies on Starz as of Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Having since been critically re-evaluated by many and labeled one of the director's most radical films, Miami Vice has gained a strong following in spite of its initial reception. Starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as undercover detectives Crockett and Tubbs, the film drew just a 47% critics' score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the movie faring worse with audiences, as they awarded Miami Vice just 43%. It would seem that the aforementioned Farrell would agree, with...

Sylvester Stallone Action Sequel 'Rambo: Last Blood' Finds Success on Netflix
Image
One of the most divisive action movies in the repertoire of Hollywood icon (and now a so-called "Special Ambassador" tasked with saving the industry) Sylvester Stallone is climbing the charts on Netflix. Released back in 2019, Stallone leads the final outing for one of his most beloved characters, John Rambo, in Rambo: Last Blood, which finds the hero battling a cartel after someone close to him is kidnapped.

Rambo: Last Blood is now #7 on the Netflix chart, just behind the likes of other action outings Miss Congeniality, Rogue Agent, and the Die Hard-esque Aftermath, which holds the top spot. Directed by Adrian Grünberg from a screenplay co-written by Matthew Cirulnick and Sylvester Stallone, Last Blood stars Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Adriana Barraza, Yvette Monreal, Genie Kim aka Yenah Han, Joaquín Cosío, and Óscar Jaenada alongside Stallone. You can check out the official synopsis below.

‘1992’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Did Mercer Save His Son?
Image
1992, directed by Ariel Vromen, takes us back in time, when protestors took to the street after the court acquitted the police officers who used excessive force on a man named Rodney Glen King. The real-life incident that took place on March 3rd, 1991, was captured on camera, where police officers from the Los Angeles Police Department were seen thrashing the man in the most brutal manner. Still, the jury acquitted the men of all charges, and that caused an uproar in society, and especially in the black community. So, let’s find out what happened in 1992 film and how our protagonist found himself stuck in the middle of a perilous situation.

Why was Antoine angry with Mercer?

Mercer had just been released from prison, and he had gotten conditional custody of his son, Antoine. Antoine’s mother and grandmother had passed away after they met with an accident. 1992 did not reveal the details of that accident,...

Tyrese Gibson Brings 'Triggering' Memories to 1992 Performance
Image
We spoke to famed rapper and actor Tyrese Gibson amid the release of 1992, his gripping new crime thriller set against a tense Los Angeles backdrop during the titular early-'90s era. The city rightfully erupted in protest once the officers involved in the merciless beating of Rodney King were acquitted, and Gibson's new film sees him in the gripping lead role as a dad in distress trying to protect his son against racism and a coincidental heist happening at his character's workplace.

Gibson is a Watts native and spoke to MovieWeb about bringing real-life experience to 1992, which also stars Scott Eastwood and the late, great Ray Liotta. He said, "It wasn't really a role for me. It was life. I was in South Central, Watts in '92, I was out there protesting, looting, rioting. So was Snoop Dogg, and that's also the same year that him and Dr. Dre released The Chronic album.

'1992' Review - A Thoughtful, Imperfect Thriller Anchored by Ray Liotta's Final Performance
Image
Prior to his tragic passing in 2022, Ray Liotta was a genuine titan who brought gravitas to every role. Whether playing supernatural baseball as Shoeless Joe Jackson in Phil Alden Robinson's Field of Dreams, representing half of a failed marriage as divorce attorney Jay Marotta in Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story, or doing copious crime and even more copious drugs as iconic up-and-coming gangster Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas, he was always a bright light worth watching. Ariel Vromen's 1992, Liotta's final film, takes place in a harrowing time in Los Angeles history: following the massive wave of riots that emerged in the wake of the Rodney King verdict. It's a tense, mostly successful thriller with a talented cast, but greater artistry in the thematic development and greater novelty in the plotting would enhance the freshness of the crime drama.

Ray Liotta's Final Film, 1992, is Dividing Critics
Image
Ray Liotta's final film, 1992, is dividing critics but impressing audiences. The heist drama, set in L.A. following the Rodney King verdict, was not the last film Liotta worked on, but it is the last of his projects to be released. 1992 landed in select theaters on August 30th. The film follows a shopkeeper who must save his son from an angry mob during the 1992 L.A. uprising after the Rodney King verdict and centers around two families.

The film currently holds a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with its audience score sitting much higher at 92%. While its score still lands the film in the fresh category, there is a significant difference between the two. So why the disparity? Critics' opinions of the film range from love for its cast to criticism of a generic plot and the fact that, despite being set during the L.A. riots, those events "take place in the backdrop.

1992 Review: Bumbling Heist Story Overshadows Areas of Real Interest
Image
There's a striking moment in 1992, among many, where the lead crook played by Scott Eastwood turns to his younger brother once a robbery opportunity presents itself. "All it took was 12 racist f***s in Simi Valley," he says, now that the city around him has rightfully erupted in protest. The year is 1992, hence the impactful title of the film, and the city is Los Angeles. More specifically, we're in the Watts area of the City of Angels for this new Lionsgate offering from director Ariel Vromen, working off the script he wrote with Sascha Penn.

Eastwood is reliably solid in a leading role, but top billing goes to Tyrese Gibson in perhaps his finest role to date. There are parallel stories that ultimately converge for the latter half of this fictitious tale set against a very once-real backdrop. 1992 sets up an intriguing premise of pitting one father-son duo against another,...

Scott Weighs in on Dad Clint Eastwood's Filmmaking Future
Image
We spoke to Scott Eastwood leading up to the release of 1992, his gripping new heist movie set during a pivotal time in Los Angeles amid the Rodney King riots. Scott's ambitious character's dad is played in the film by the late, great Ray Liotta in one of his final films, so it's wonderfully nostalgic seeing the pair converse and butt heads via their fictional roles on the big screen. In real life, Scott's Oscar-winning dad, Clint Eastwood, has kept busy with a highly anticipated new drama called Juror No. 2, which also stars Clint's daughter Francesca Eastwood and plenty of other big names.

At 94 years old, the world of cinema has to wonder if Juror No. 2 will be Clint's last film or if he'll just keep on trucking. "Look, you can never count out my dad in making another movie," Scott told MovieWeb. "He's been doing it for a long time.

1992 Review — Tyrese Gibson Effortlessly Carries This Heist Thriller
Image
The heist movie genre has seen many films set in different places. Ben Affleck’s The Town was set in the middle of a Red Sox game, Oceans Eleven heist was during a boxing match in a casino, and the latest from Lionsgate 1992 puts a heist in the middle of the Rodney King Verdict protests. The Tyrese Gibson-led film sees him play Mercer, a fresh out-of-jail employee who finds himself and his son in the middle of a heist.

1992 Review

I remember seeing this trailer at the end of last year and being intrigued by the premise. Heist movies are one of my favorite genres, and if done right, they can be instant classics. With 1992 set amid the uprising protests post-Rodney King verdict, the film’s tone is strong and has an unwavering message that is heartbreaking at its core.

It’s both daring and insane to deliver...

Chicago – Tyrese Gibson is taking this one personally. Originally from the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles, Gibson is the lead role in the film “1992” (in theaters on August 30th). His character Mercer went through the Watts Uprising in 1965, plus he and his son must navigate the Rodney King Uprising in 1992.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

In that year, Mercer Bey (Gibson) is desperately trying to rebuild his life and relationship with his son (Christopher A’mmanuel) amidst the turbulent Los Angeles uprising following the Rodney King verdict. Across town, another father and son (Scott Eastwood) put their own strained relationship to the test as they plot a precious metals heist from the factory where Mercer works. Two of them are already shot: the opening two parts of the planned four movie western saga Horizon. Kevin Costner sets another passion project for 2025; reunites him with the director of Criminal
Image
Despite no longer being a part of Yellowstone’s next season, Kevin Costner seems to be busier than ever. First up, he’s got a two-part Western epic called Horizon: An American Saga that’s coming out this summer, and now, Deadline is reporting that the actor’s got another “longtime passion project” ready to roll. While there are no specifics on what it may be, Costner is set to produce and star in the untitled film, with the director of his 2016 thriller Criminal, Ariel Vromen, at the helm.

In the article, no specifics are given, although Costner has been open about certain long-planned projects in the past. One is his book, The Explorer’s Guild, which he wrote with his Horizon collaborator Jon Baird and was called an Indiana Jones-style globetrotting adventure. It could be anything, although given Vromen’s track record, which includes based-on-fact thrillers, The Iceman (with...

Pic’s plot is under wraps and further details are scarce, but production is expected to kick off in early 2025. This will be Costner and Vromen’s second film together, on the heels of the 2016 action thriller Criminal co-starring Gary Oldman and Tommy Lee Jones. The Most Underrated Crime Movies
Image
I’ve loved gangster movies since I was four years old and saw Humphrey Bogart and Sylvia Sidney in Dead End (1937) on TV, and Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde (1967) at the movies (My dad pinched a lobby card for me). Every Friday night, a local NYC station ran old crime flicks on a slot called “Tough Guys.” Bogart, James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson, and George Raft were the faces over the title. Today that might be Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Wesley Snipes, and James Gandolfini.

The gangster and crime genre produced some of the most influential films in cinema history. Mervyn LeRoy’s Little Caesar (1931), William A. Wellman’s The Public Enemy (1931), and Howard Hawks’ Scarface (1932), get a lot of credit for breaking ground in topics beyond criminality, shattering sexual taboos as well as the boundaries of acceptable visual violence. High Sierra (1941) and White Heat...

APA Forms Strategic Partnership With Boutique Literary and Production House Europa Content (Exclusive)
Image
In the latest bid to break out of the mid-agency pack, APA has formed a strategic partnership with Europa Content, the boutique literary and production company founded by Marc Gerald.

The goal is to expand APA’s intellectual property and media rights division led by Steve Fisher and Debbie Deuble Hill and to increase resources for both APA and Europa Content clients and creators across all media.

Having access to a publishing house has been a key engine of growth for many agencies, allowing for cross-company collaborations and access to content and intellectual property. APA sees it as a next step as it seeks to position itself apart from the mid-agency level and attempts to position itself as an alternative to top-tier agencies such as CAA, UTA and WME.

“We are thrilled to expand our shared business with Marc and his incredible team at Europa Content,” said Kyle Loftus, head of content development at APA.

Cocaine Bear Director Elizabeth Banks Had To Break The News Of Ray Liotta's Death To His Co-Stars
Image
When Elizabeth Banks boarded "Cocaine Bear" as its director back in March 2021, it certainly got people talking. The character-driven thriller, which was inspired by a true story and produced by "The Lego Movie" filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, continued to turn heads as more details and a trailer finally arrived for the highly anticipated feature. However, following the death of Ray Liotta in May 2022, the conversation shifted slightly as this would be one of the legendary actor's final appearances on the big screen.

Primarily known for his breakout performance in "Goodfellas," Liotta went on to appear in a number of intense roles throughout his career. Prior to his passing at the age of 67, he was even experiencing a bit of career resurgence thanks to roles in "No Sudden Move" and "The Many Saints of Newark." But he wasn't afraid to have a little fun as well by branching out beyond intense dramas,...

When Israeli film director Ariel Vromen called up Ray Liotta to join his film, “1992”, the late screen legend had one question.

“In the last five years, Ray was playing softer characters in television and film, so when I called, he said, ‘Is it dirty? Because I want to go down and dirty on this film. It’s been a while!’” Vromen told Et Canada at a preview screening for friends and family at Hollywood’s Harmony Gold theatre on Wednesday. I was like, ‘Perfect.’”

Set during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, the film follows a custodian played by Tyrese Gibson, who brings his son (portrayed by Christoper Emanual) to work only to become embroiled in a heist orchestrated by a father-son duo played by Liotta and Scott Eastwood.

How ‘Do the Right Thing’ Inspired Gordon Bobb to Become a Powerful Hollywood Attorney
Image
In 2001, Gordon Bobb, now a partner at Del Shaw Moonves Tanaka Finkelstein & Lezcano, attended his first Sundance Film Festival. Bobb had joined the prestigious entertainment law firm the previous year and was accompanying one of his early clients, a Black filmmaker whose film was screening at the event. It was an exciting experience, Bobb recalls, but a somewhat disorienting one.

“The film screened and premiered, and there was press around it, but that was pretty much it,” says Bobb, who will be recognized with Variety’s Power of Law honor at the online Power of Law breakfast April 9. “There wasn’t any kind of support around the film and the filmmakers. And we were just kind of left to wander around Park City, up and down Main Street. There were other Black filmmakers that had similar experiences — there was no place to come together and network. There was no organization...

Image
Director Ariel Vromen has found his next project, the buzzy Los Angeles riots script “April 29, 1992” from writer Sascha Penn.

Vromen, whose credits include the well-received Michael Shannon thriller “The Iceman,” has boarded the project with an eye for fast-tracked production, as early as June.

The film takes place on the first night of the historic Los Angeles riots of 1992. It centers on a custodian who brings his son to work that evening, as the two quickly find themselves in the middle of a heist gone wrong.

The hope is for the film to release in 2022 to mark the 30th anniversary of the riots that rocked L.A. for nearly a week, following the acquittal of four LAPD officers for the use of excessive force in the recorded and widely-viewed arrest and beating of Rodney King.
