Lego has confirmed its first live-action television project, a Lego Friends musical special planned for 2026 and executive-produced by “High School Musical” veteran Kenny Ortega, following an initial report in Deadline.

Announced on 8 July, the production will begin shooting in London this August, marking the brickmaker’s most ambitious screen venture outside animation and feature films. Ortega said the invitation from the company “is an absolute honor,” adding that his family are committed Lego devotees. He will work alongside longtime collaborator Paul Becker, who is set to direct and choreograph the 60-minute show after stints on “Julie and the Phantoms” and “The Kissing Booth”.

Story elements follow a girl who builds a Lego world and is whisked into Heartlake City, blending live performers with oversized bricks, LED-volume backdrops and real-time Unreal Engine rendering supplied by virtual-production outfit Final Pixel. The Lego Group has set director and producer Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) as executive producer for its first-ever live-action TV project: a Lego Friends musical special, set in the world of Heartlake City. Filming is set to begin in London this August with release due in 2026. The storyline follows a girl who constructs a world out of Lego bricks, only to be magically transported to Heart Lake City. Ortega said: “I don’t know who’s more excited – my family or me. Exclusive: Monarch Media is adapting its Christian coming-of-age romance film A Week Away into a TV series starring Antonio Cipriano, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, David Koechner, Leigh-Allyn Baker, Sacha Carlson, Ava Jean, Haven Greene, Jason Marsden and Carlos PenaVega.

The series is set to be distributed by Angel Studios. Alan Powell, founding member of Christian rock group Anthem Lights and co-writer of the original film, has been tapped as the showrunner. He will also pen the series with Kali Bailey and Zuehlsdorff.

Similar to the film, which launched on Netflix in 2021, A Week Away: The Series follows a group of kids as they embark on a summer at Camp Aweegaway — a Christian camp filled with adventure, friendships, and unexpected self-discovery.

Production will take place at the same location as the original film, Nashville’s Camp Widjiwagan.

“A Week Away has been a very personal endeavor for me from the beginning,” said Powell.

FX has announced a host of additions to the cast of its series Alien: Earth.

Eleven actors, including three who have worked with showrunner Noah Hawley on Fargo, have joined the series in guest roles. The new additions are Richa Moorjani (Fargo, Never Have I Ever), Karen Aldridge (Severance, Fargo), Enzo Cilenti (The Serpent Queen, Game of Thrones), Max Rinehart (Unforgotten), Amir Boutrous (The Crown), Victoria Masoma, Tom Moya, Andy Yu (Fargo), Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters), Jamie Bisping (The Rings of Power) and Tanapol Chuksrida.

They join a cast led by Sydney Chandler, who plays a young woman that, along with a ragtag band of soldiers, make a fateful discovery. Alex Lawther, Timothy Olyphant, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, David Rysdahl, Adrian Edmondson, Adarsh Gourav, Jonathan Ajayi, Erana James, Lily Newmark, Diem Camille and Moe Bar-El.

The MCU seems to be on an upward trajectory, especially with the buzz around Deadpool & Wolverine and the announcement of Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Victor Von Doom in the next phase, where the iconic scientist will be the main villain.

Beyond these highly anticipated projects, the MCU has several other releases lined up, some generating more excitement than others. One of these is the Thunderbolts* film, set to premiere on May 2, 2025, barring any delays.

As part of the film’s promotion, Marvel has unveiled the first official look—a simple photo featuring the main characters. However, fan reactions are mixed, as you’ll see from the comments we’ve compiled below!

All the main characters are present in one of Marvel’s signature “elevator scenes,” but it doesn’t reveal much else.

Exclusive: Savannah Lee Smith and Owen Patrick Joyner have been cast in Monarch Media’s musical feature Something Here. The film was previously referred to as the Untitled Florida Georgia Line Project.

Tk McKamy is set to direct, from a screenplay written by Alan Powell (A Week Away), Steve Barnett and David Bush. Barnett and Powell are producing through their Monarch Media shingle. Executive producers include Monarch’s Vicky Patel, actor/singer-songwriter/producer Jordan Fisher and Florida Georgia Line vet Tyler Hubbard. In the episode, Fillory’s High King Eliot (Hale Appleman) is about to enter into mortal combat with the King of Lauria, who has never been defeated. Eliot’s right-hand magician and partner in every crime imaginable Margo (Summer Bishil) gives him a pep talk and reminisces about how well he did in a production of “Les Miserables.” Inspired by that success, she used magic to force him and others to perform the number “One Day More” from the musical in order to get him pumped up for his duel.

Exclusive: Paul Becker directs the story of a homeless dancer and his brother.

Premiere Entertainment Group (Peg) has acquired international sales rights to the family holiday film Breaking Brooklyn.

Louis Gossett Jr and newcomer Colin Critchley, Nathan Kress and Madeleine Mantock star in the story about a homeless young dancer and his brother who are taken in by an old Broadway showman when their father is arrested.

When one of the young men learns that their new guardian could lose his theatre, they enter a dance contest to save it.

Paul Becker directs and Elie Samaha, Donald Kushner and Missy Valdez are the producers.

Broadway World has a rather interesting interview with Paul Becker, the man behind all of the choreography in Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Part 2. Here Paul talks about getting the job, working with Bill Condon, and even getting a cameo appearance in the film. Read more below:

PC: You appear at the memorable wedding in Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1, do you not?

Pb: [Laughs.] Yes. Actually, it was really funny – as you know, Bill Condon, the director, wrote Chicago and so he brought me in to choreograph Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Part 2. And, so, I showed up on set and we were all having a good time, and, then, when I showed up on set for the last day of filming, where we were doing the big wedding scene, and I go into my trailer and I find there is a suit there. So, I say to the Ad, “Why is there a suit in there?” and, she says, “Bill Condon wants you to get into wardrobe.” And, I say, “What?! What do you mean ‘wardrobe’?!” And, so I put on the suit and I go onset and Bill is there and he puts his arm around me and says, “I got you in Chicago and now I’m gonna put you in this one.” And, so, he put me in the scene.

PC: What a great story.

Pb: Yeah, it was really fun. It was nice of him to do that.

PC: How did you get involved with Bill on Twilight in the first place? Was it just the Chicago connection?

Pb: I’m not sure – we never actually met on Chicago, but my girlfriend Sharon Leal was in Dreamgirls that he directed so she had known him. I had never met him before Twilight, though. One of the producers called me – I just got a random phone call one day and someone said, “Bill Condon saw your material and he would like to meet with you.” And, so, I was actually filming the TV series Hellcats at the time, in Vancouver, so I just went over to the Twilight set and I could not believe how hi-security it was – I mean, you could not get on the set!

Now Breaking Dawn choreographer, Paul Becker, has released another video, this one featuring Christian camargo (Elezar) and Mia Maestro (Carmen) as they practice their dance moves for Edward and Bella’s big day. I absolutely love how much work really went into the wedding reception when realistically it was such a tiny part of the film, yet a scene that was truly awesome all the same. It looks like Mia and Christian had quite a bit a fun with the dance rehearsal too! I’d love to have to practice this kind of thing before it’s filmed.

In December, I had the pleasure of teaching fairy tales to seniors and we explored how the basic stories have been told and retold around the world and through the ages. The core concepts remain vital and can withstand wildly varying interpretations. Before Walt Disney began cementing a single version of each tale in the global consciousness, they were adapted time and again based on the culture and need of the ages.

I was reminded of this all over again when prime time offered us both Once Upon a Time and Grimm, which were vastly different takes on some of the most beloved fairy tales. The former obviously owes a lot to its corporate masters, Walt Disney, but even so, the versions of Snow White, the Queen, Pinocchio, and so on do not identically match their animated counterparts. Grimm uses the fairy tales as a launching point and goes in a wildly different direction.

The show just returned after a month and a half hiatus on Tuesday, April 19 and the show will run continuously until the Season 1 finale on Tuesday, May 17. I had a chance to speak with Paul Becker over the phone to discuss his work on the series. Here's what he had to say.

I read you're a protege of Kenny Ortega. I was curious how you first got into the whole business as a choreographer in general?

Paul Becker: Yeah.

In our twelfth episode I get to discuss the hot new Zack Snyder movie Sucker Punch with Paul Becker, who did much of the dance and movement choreography in the movie. One movie generating a lot of buzz right now is Zack Snyder.s "Sucker Punch," which is hitting the streets this Friday. The film centres on a young girl who is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. While in the institution, she retreats to an alternative reality as a coping strategy and conjures up a plan to make her escape from the facility. Recently Monsters and Critics got the chance to speak with Paul Becker, who is perhaps one of the hardest working people behind the scenes in the movies. Paul did most of the dance and movement choreography that you will see in the film, and was more than happy to talk with M&C about it.
