Director Kalyan Shankar’s follow-up to his 2023 comedy “Mad” is neither fun nor funny. Titled “Mad Square,” with square as in the algebraic expression, the Telugu film is supposed to multiply with itself. It is understandably an effort at exaggerating the entertainment quotient of the sequel. With a string of bland, repetitive gags coming one after another, “Mad Square” is one flat joke. There is very less to feel entertained by, but a whole lot to be ‘mad’ about. To quote Math, instead of raising to the power of two, the film should have subtracted itself from itself.
The sequel places itself some four years after the events of the first film. With a nod towards the engineering college setup of the first film, “Mad Square” shows a band of engineering students being taken to a high-security prison. It is baffling why those students, possibly taken in for unruliness or some petty misdemeanor,...

Kannappa Ott Deal Twist! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Since the pandemic, Ott platforms and film production have developed a symbiotic relationship, significantly impacting the industry. During the peak of the crisis, direct-to-ott releases created friction between producers and exhibitors. Even today, streaming platforms play a crucial role in determining a film’s release strategy.
For instance, in Mollywood, the Mohanlal-starrer Thudarum was initially slated for a January 2025 release but was delayed because the production house couldn’t secure a streaming deal before its theatrical debut. However, one actor standing firmly against Ott dominance is Tollywood’s Manchu Vishnu.
It’s hard to blame production houses for prioritizing deals with streaming platforms, as these agreements often recover a significant portion of their costs. Much of the financial risk is mitigated when a film has a pre-release Ott deal. If the platform acquires the film before its theatrical release and the movie flops at the box office,...

Two Blockbusters Rajasekhar Lost That Made Chiranjeevi a Megastar (Photo Credit – YouTube/Instagram)
In the film industry, a role intended for one actor sometimes lands in the hands of another. If the film succeeds, it can change the course of their career. This is exactly what happened with Rajasekhar and Chiranjeevi—twice.
Rajasekhar who is popularly called as the Angry Young Man of Tollywood built a strong reputation in the industry. He competed with top stars and earned a dedicated fan base. But his few career missteps impacted his journey. His popularity over time declined and he transitioned into character roles.
During his peak Rajasekhar’s films often released alongside those of Chiranjeevi and Balakrishna ane many of which performed well at the box office. He received great opportunities but he couldn’t fully capitalize on them.

A new take on the cult horror classic “Audition,” one of the more influential modern horror films in the torture-porn genre, is coming to the screen.
Focus Features is nearing a deal to produce a feature adaptation of “Audition” based on the 1997 horror-thriller novel by Ryū Murakami, which was originally brought to the screen by Japanese master Takashi Miike in 1999 starring Ryo Ishibashi and Eihi Shiina.
Focus will produce the project alongside Ashok Amritraj’s Hyde Park Entertainment and Mario Kassar Productions, who have tapped Christian Tafdrup to write and direct the film. Tafdrup is the Danish director behind the original “Speak No Evil,” which was last year adapted into English by Blumhouse and Universal. Tafdrup is co-writing the script with his brother Mads Tafdrup.
“Audition” starts as a domestic drama of a widower who is holding mock auditions in order to find a new wife, only to discover that...

Danish filmmaker Christian Tafdrup brought the incredibly bleak film Gæsterne, a.k.a. Speak No Evil (read our review Here) into the world back in 2022 – and when the American remake was released last year, Tafdrup let it be known that he wasn’t impressed by the new take on his story, because it didn’t leave viewers traumatized like the original film did. Now, Deadline has revealed that Tafdrup is on board to direct a remake of director Takashi Miike’s dark and twisted 1999 Japanese film Audition… and we can probably rest assured that he’s not going to take it easy on viewers with his take on the material.
Based on a 1997 horror thriller novel by Ryū Murakami, Miike’s Audition was scripted by Daisuke Tengan and has the following synopsis: Widower Aoyama decides to start dating again. Aided by a film-producer friend, Aoyama uses auditions for a fake...

2024 for Hindi movies was like a kickback to the countless number of Box-office turners we got last year. After the sheer storm that movies like Pathaan, Jawan, Animal, and Gadar 2 brought out at the Box Office (their questionable quality aside), 2024 turned out to be a year where Hindi cinema got its mojo back – in particular the little gems that often go unnoticed.
Sure there was the usual pile of absolute garbage across all fronts and genres, but this year could be seen as a slightly better outing for Bollywood. Thanks in large part to some small-budgeted fares that had minor ambitions and even minor Box office runs. However, for those of us who like to go out of our way to get to the core of such movies, it was a good time.
In the following list, I’d like to point out those movies that were competently made,...
